1 Date Pages Read Time Spent Reading Just a Reminder! There are many factors that affect the relationship between a reader and text, including content, age-appropriateness, reader interests, suitability of the text, and text difficulty. The measure of a book a measure of text difficulty is a good starting point in the book-selection process, with other factors then being considered. The measure should never be the only factor considered when selecting a book. Parents, please help your child choose appropriate reading this summer. Name: : 2013 Summer Reading Program Grades 1-8 Reading Log for: Name: Savannah-Chatham County Public School System Linda Olson Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction 208 Bull Street, Room 208 Savannah, GA Phone: Fax: Parent Verification of Reading Log (Signature)
2 Elementary & Middle School Assignments All students will read 3 books. Students should select books that are within their range. Students entering First and Second Grade this fall should read 3 books that are on the Suggested Reading List or other books designated for Beginning Readers. The official website is an amazing resource for finding appropriate summer reading material (for free!). To use this resource go to and follow these steps. 1. At the top or the web page, click on Find a Book Students entering Third Grade through Eighth Grade this fall should read 3 books that fall within their range, from 100 points below to 50 points above their score. The score is found on the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) report, which was sent home to parents. Students are strongly encouraged to read at least one piece of informational (non-fiction) text over the summer. The Common Core Standards recently adopted by Georgia place a much stronger emphasis on informational text as it is more present in college and career reading. Summer Reading for kindergarten students is recommended, but not required. No grades will be given to kindergarten students. ***Students are encouraged to find books that interest them. ***Parents are encouraged to read aloud to their children. Assignment: All students will keep a Reading Log of time spent reading 3 books and have the log signed by a parent. The reading log will count as two homework grades. A blank Reader s Log is attached. Sample Reading Log Date Pages Read Time Spent Reading Swimmy Pgs min Miss Nelson is Back Pgs min. 2. Type in your child s score in the appropriate box. The Range will automatically be calculated. Click Submit. 3. Next, you will be able to check various categories about which your child may wish to read. When finished, click Submit. 4. Now you will be presented with a list of books that are in your child s areas of interest and within his or her range. Clicking the WorldCat button next to each book will allow you to see if that book is available in the Live Oak Public Libraries. If the library does carry that book, you can request a hold online. You can also request the book be sent to your local library branch Miss Nelson is Back Pgs min. More information on s can be found on the Metametrics Webpage: or on the Find-A-Book, Georgia page of the Georgia Department of Education: * is a registered trademark of Metametrics, Inc.
3 Great Series! This is a list of possible book series for our students in grades 3-8 to read. Many times, if a student enjoys one book of the series, he or she will enjoy several of them. Range Title of Series Clifford Bridwell, Norman Berenstain Bears Berenstain, Stan What is a? s can range from approximately 100 to s rate the text complexity of a book. A student s is the level of text that a student can read with 75% comprehension. Where can I find this score? Students in Second through Eighth Grade have taken the Scholastic Reading Inventory, resulting in a score. A report from this assessment (containing your child s score) has been sent home to parents Arthur Brown, Marc Curious George Rey, Margret Nate the Great Sharmat, Marjorie Weinman Magic Tree House Osborne, Mary Pope Junie B. Jones Park, Barbara Which book should my child read? Choose books with a from 100 below to 50 above your child s score. For example, if my second grader reads at 330L, he should pick a book with a range of 230L-380L. If your child s score exceeds that of the grade level band, then he or she should read texts either within his or her range, or within the appropriate Grade Band as outlined below.
