2 Choice 1: Advertising Challenge You will create a poster for one of the following novels: 1. The Watsons Go To Birmingham 2. Mr. Popper s Penguins You will take the role of an advertising agency trying to sell one s above by creating an attractive and creative magazine ad. The purpose of this ad is to sell the book to readers, so you will need to persuade them by including ALL of the following elements in your advertisement: 1. An illustration of the book cover. 2. The names of the author, illustrator (if there is one), and publisher. 3. The title. 4. A one paragraph piece of persuasive writing where you will try to convince your reader to buy the novel. This could include the following: a. Discussing your favorite parts. b. Discussing interesting characters from the novel. c. Pointing out how interesting and exciting the main conflict is. d. Discussing the benefits of reading the novel. What will they learn? 5. One quotes from the novel which will attract your reader. These should make your reader interested in possibly reading the novel. This should take the form of an eye catching poster with correct spelling and grammar in the writing.

4 Option #2: Banned Books Persuasive Letter Books have been banned for many different reasons throughout the years. Below you will find a list of several popular books that have been banned from schools and the reasons for their banishment. You will choose one of the prompts that are listed below and write a persuasive letter in order to convince your principal of why these books should or should not be banned from your school district. Choose one of the following prompts to research and write a persuasive letter to your principal on why these books should or should not be banned. 1. Harry Potter should be banned from schools because the series involves witchcraft. 2. The Goosebumps series should be banned from schools because it is too scary for children. 3. The Giver should be banned from schools because it contains ideas about brainwashing and conformity. In order to successfully complete this assignment you must read the book you select, research why the book was banned, and write a persuasive letter explaining why the book should or should not be banned. Use all of the aspects of persuasive writing that we have discussed in class while completing this assignment. Must include an interesting hook that clearly shows your opinion. Must include a thesis statement that explicitly states your two big reasons. Must include two body paragraphs that each include a topic sentence, two pieces of textual evidence, and adequate explanation of each quote. 6 Option #3: News Report of Birmingham s Children's March Imagine that you are a news reporter in the year of 1963, and are assigned to report on the Birmingham Children s March. You need to gain multiple first-hand accounts of what actually happened during this time. After gaining those accounts, you then need to transfer that information into a news report, so that you can share the information with the rest of the country about what is happening in Birmingham, Alabama. Images do not have captions to explain what is happening in the image.
