1 PATRIOT PRESS December 2016 Message from the Superintendent, Mr. Cruz Dear Washington Colony families and community, We have just concluded the first trimester. Thank you, parents and families, for putting your children s education first. Thank you for attending Parent/Teacher conferences to learn more about your child s academic progress. During the rest of the year our students will continue to engage in daily reading opportunities. The new Accelerated Reader (AR) program demands that students read independently at their own reading level for at least minutes a day at home. This will help students achieve reading growth over time. Instructional Technology continues to increase in our classrooms. The district s goal is to achieve a ratio of one Chromebook cart for every classroom in order to better integrate Instructional Technology. Currently the school has deployed three Chromebook carts to third and eighth grades. We recently purchased four additional Chromebook carts that makes a total of 210 additional units available for classrooms. Student are using these technology tools for research, formative assessments, online academic activities, benchmark assessments and standardsbased practice SBAC computer assessments. This year, Reading is one of the school s focused areas of growth. The Reading Lab is up and running with a great team of two Reading Intervention teachers and two instructional aides. Teachers collaborate with the Reading Lab staff regularly in order to identify areas of reading growth needed by students. Students also get extra reading support from independent reading with the AR program books. The next Parent Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7th from 6:00-8:00 PM. The workshops are facilitated by the FCOE Parent Center Services. Your participation in these workshops is greatly encouraged and appreciated. We will make automated phone calls and send home information with your students prior to the workshop as a reminder. The Marine Corps League s Toys-For- Tots Drive will be distributing toys on December 14th, 15th and 16th at the WUHS gym. Remember to bring your photo ID in order to pick up toys. Thank you to our friend, Mr. Mike Aguilar, for being the local chairman of this outstanding organization. I want to continue to emphasize the importance of attendance and school safety. Both aspects are extremely important in connection to academic success. Please use caution as you drop off and pick up your children in the Loading/Unloading Yellow Zones. A driver must be inside the vehicle at all times. Please do not leave your car unattended. We realize that the school is limited on parking spaces in front of the school. Thank you for your understanding and assistance. Let s continue with a great daily attendance rate of 95% and above. Every Minute Counts! Recently Washington Colony hosted a successful Fall Carnival. Thanks to the involvement of parents and community (Continued on page 7) Christmas Music Program The Music Department has been preparing for the Annual Christmas Program! It will take place on Friday, December 9th at the Washington Union High School Auditorium. Band students are asked to arrive at 5:30 PM for set-up and warm -up. All students are encouraged to wear holiday or formal attire. The program will begin at 6:00 PM. Come join us for an evening of music as we kick off the holiday season!

Muchas gracias padres y familias por poner la educación de sus niños en primer lugar. Muchas gracias por asistir a las conferencias de Padres/ Maestros para aprender más sobre el progreso académico de sus niños. En el transcurso del año nuestros estudiantes van a seguir involucrándose en oportunidades diarias de lectura. El programa nuevo de Lector Acelerado (AR) demanda que los estudiantes lean independientemente a su nivel de lectura por lo menos minutos al día en el hogar. Esto le ayuda a los estudiantes a obtener un crecimiento en lectura con el tiempo. La Tecnología Instructiva sigue aumentando en nuestros salones. La meta del distrito es lograr una proporción de un carro Chromebook para cada salón para integrar mejor la Tecnología Instructiva. En la actualidad la escuela ha distribuido tres carros de Chromebook en los grados tercero y octavo. Acabamos de comprar cuatro carros Chromebook nuevos para un total de 210 unidades disponibles para los salones. Los estudiantes están usando esta tecnología para investigación, evaluaciones formativas, actividades académicas en línea, evaluaciones de puntos de referencia y prácticas de evaluaciones computarizadas SBAC basadas en normas. Este año, la Lectura es un área de enfoque para crecimiento de la escuela. El Laboratorio de Lectura está trabajando con un gran equipo de dos maestros de Intervención de Lectura y dos asistentes instructivos. Los maestros colaboran con el personal del Laboratorio de Lectura con regularidad para identificar las áreas de crecimiento en lectura necesarias para los estudiantes. Los estudiantes también obtienen apoyo extra en lectura para lectura independiente con los libros del programa AR. La Colecta de Juguetes de Marine Corps League va a estar distribuyendo juguetes el 14, 15 y 16 de diciembre en el gimnasio de la ESWU. Recuerden traer su Identificación con foto para recoger los juguetes. Muchas gracias a nuestro amigo, el Sr. Mike Aguilar, por ser el director local de esta organización sobresaliente. Quiero continuar enfatizando la importancia de la asistencia y la seguridad escolar. Ambos aspectos son extremadamente importante en la conexión con el éxito académico. Por favor tengan cuidado cuando dejan y recojan a sus niños en las Zonas Amarillas para Dejar/Recoger. Un conductor tiene que estar adentro del vehículo en todo momento. 3 Page 3 Patriot Press Classroom News Kindergarten, (Mrs. Davis & Mrs. Smith): The carnival was a great success! Thank you so much for the generous donations to our Lollipop Game and the baskets for the carnival. It was a fun time for all! It was great to see so many of you at conferences. Thank you for taking the time to be here with your child. Mark your calendars for Friday, December 9th; it is our annual Christmas Program at Washington Union High School. It starts at 6:00 pm. See you there! We will have a Christmas Party Friday, December 16th. We will send more information as we get closer to the date. Over Christmas vacation please continue to work on sounds, letters, numbers, and sight words. Thank you! First Grade, (Mrs. Partlow & Mr. Schaffer): Hello First Grade Parents and Guardians! It s hard to believe the holidays are already upon us. We hope you have some wonderful and special family time ahead. Our first graders are working hard! Our themes have been centered on school, our pets, and our friends. In Language Arts we have been reading stories about all these things! We ve been working on our short a, i, and o vowel words as well as blends like bl, cl, pl, and fl. In Writing we are writing paragraphs. These include a topic sentence, sentences beginning with first, next, and last, and a concluding sentence. The kids are doing great! Please be sure that you are reading to your child and that your child is reading to you at least 20 minutes every day. Shared reading time is crucial to reading growth. In Math we have worked our way through addition and subtraction through 10 and will continue to apply these skills in math drawings, writing equations, and solving equations through story problems. Enjoy the holidays! Second Grade, (Mrs. Pallas & Mrs. Sweet): We are finishing up our unit on Animal Discoveries. We have read about a variety of animals and their habitats. The students have loved learning about such fascinating creatures! In Writing we are moving away from narratives and into preparation for informational writing by working on how-to pieces. Those will begin in early December. In Math we are beginning to regroup ten ones to make a ten, and ten tens to make a hundred. Please practice math facts with your child regularly...both addition and subtraction within 20 need to be automatic by the end of second grade. Thank you to all who attended Parent/ Teacher Conferences. We appreciated the time to share with you all that your child is learning! Third Grade, (Ms. Hefley, Ms. Espinosa & Mrs. Owens): Thank you to all who supported third grade at the Fall Carnival. We did great! In Math we are continuing our hard work in the land of multiplication. In English Language Arts we are moving into stories that will teach us point of view, prefixes, suffixes, and similes. California Native Americans are moving into our classroom during Social Science, while in Science we are wrapping up Habitats, Heredity, and Change over time. Soon we will move into Life Cycle, Traits and Heredity. Have a Happy Holiday, everyone! Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Barker & Mrs. Hawkins): December is a busy month! Fifth graders are preparing for the Christmas Concert. It will be our first time to play in public! In Math we are multiplying with decimals, so those math facts are so important. Help your student practice a few minutes a day. Reading is continuing with our theme of Taking the Next Step, where we will read about the Constitution as well as a fantasy about a journey in the Far East. History continues on with colonization of North America while Science finishes up weather and moves on to Atoms and Elements. Hope to see all of you at the concert! Seventh Grade, (Mrs. Green): The seventh grade ELA-History classes finished reading a very suspenseful radio play entitled, Sorry...Wrong Number, which was broadcast via radio in the 1940 s. Each student had a role and we performed the play in class. I then was able to go to You Tube to have students hear the radio play as it was performed 70 years ago. We later saw the adapted Hollywood movie, which starred actors Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster. Students compared the perception of a simple phone call to the reality of a murder plot. Also, we took a virtual field trip to Plymouth, Massachusetts and walked through a replica of the Mayflower ship and a Plymouth village, complete with modern actors, and learned a lot about the Pilgrims journey to the New World. Finally, students wrote thank you cards and completed an essay explaining what they are thankful for. Physical Education, (Mr. DeLaRosa): For PE it is super important to continue to practice the 5-Star Expectation of Safe. Many students have realized activities in PE are often cued to start when they hear the words, Be Safe. But remember the other 5-Star Expectations as well! Have a great December!

Muchas gracias por las generosas donaciones para nuestro Juego de Lollipop y las canastas para el carnaval. Todos tuvimos un gran tiempo! Fue muy bueno ver a tantos de ustedes en la conferencias. Los Nativo Americanos de California se están moviendo a nuestro salón en Ciencias Sociales, mientras que en ciencias estamos terminando de estudiar los Hábitats, la Herencia y el Cambio en el transcurso del tiempo. Pronto nos vamos a mover al Clico de Vida, a las Cualidades y a la Herencia. Les deseamos un Feliz Tiempo Navideño! Quinto Grado, (Sra. Barker y Sra. Hawkins): Diciembre es un mes muy ocupa- do! Los niños del quinto grado se están preparando para el Concierto de Navidad. Será la primera vez que toquemos en público! En matemáticas estamos multiplicando con decimales y esas tablas matemáticas son bien importantes. Ayuden a que su estudiante practique unos cuantos minutos a diarios. En lectura seguimos con nuestro tema de Tomar el Siguiente Paso, en donde vamos a leer sobre la Constitución y también una fantasía sobre un viaje al Lejano Este. Seguimos en sociales con la colonización del Norte de América mientras que las Ciencias van a terminar con el clima y nos vamos a mover con los Átomos y los Elementos. Espero ver a todos en el concierto! Séptimo Grado, (Sra. Green): Las clases del séptimo grado de Artes del Lenguaje Inglés e Historia terminaron de leer un drama de radio titulado Sorry...Wrong Number, el cual fue transmitido vía radio en Cada estudiante escuchó el drama radial como se presentó hace 70 años. Luego vimos la película de Hollywood adaptada, con los actores Barbara Stanwyck y Burt Lancaster. Los estudiantes compararon la percepción de una llamada telefónica sencilla a la realidad de un complot de asesinato. También, tuvimos una excursión virtual a Plymouth, en Massachusetts y caminamos a través de una réplica del barco Mayflower y un pueblo Plymouth, completo con actores modernos, y aprendimos mucho sobre el viaje de los Pilgrims al Nuevo Mundo. Finalmente, los estudiante escribieron tarjetas de gratitud y completaron una composición explicando por lo que están agradecidos. Educación Física, (Sr. DeLaRosa): Para Educación Física es importante continuar practicando las Expectativas 5-Star de Seguridad. She is sweet, kind, and wonderful to have in class. Ryan Hernandez, Mrs. Smith: Ryan is a very caring young man. When anyone is upset, Ryan is concerned for them. He tries to help or lets the teacher know there is a problem. He is an example of all the character traits. Evelyn Zuniga, Mr. Schaffer: Evelyn shows caring everyday. She is always concerned about the feelings of others and cares for them if they are sad or injured. She also cares about school and works hard, pays attention and does her best! Naylea Salais, Mrs. Partlow: Besides being a hard worker, Naylea also helps anyone in her group who needs help. She takes pride in doing her classroom job and always tries her best. She is a great 5-Star Student! Josiah Torrez, Mrs. Pallas: Josiah is an enthusiastic learner and an excellent mathematician. He is polite and respectful, and an excellent Patriot of the Month! Antonio Lara, Mrs. Sweet: Antonio is a very caring student. He speaks with kind words to his classmates and is always helping students who need his help. Daisy Arciga, Mrs. Owens: Daisy helps others. She does not take part in excluding others. She wants to be a friend to everyone. Daisy takes the time to write positive, encouraging notes. Evangelina Pascual, Ms. Hefley: Evie takes time to care about those around her. She notices when others need help. Evie definitely represents a 5-Star Student! in school. Juliana Muro, Ms. Espinosa: Julie is a prime example of a caring person. She is a considerate and kind young lady. She is warm-hearted and shows great concern for others. Jocelyn Arellano, Mrs. Lyles: Jocelyn is a kind, responsible student who respects and cares for others. She also cares deeply about doing well Layla Marquez, Mr. Brotnov: Layla is a good example of caring. She shows patience in class and on the playground. She listens to others and is always conscientious. Samantha Cortez, Mrs. Barker: Samantha is a very caring student. She cares about her classmates and about her work. She always does her best! Joel Anaya, Mrs. Hawkins: Joel is caring; he wants others to succeed in their endeavors and he is willing to help them. Sofia Ruiz, Ms. Gray: Sofia is always kind and sweet to her classmates. She is sensitive to others and never hurts anyone s feelings. Josiah Verhines, Mrs. Martinez: Josiah is enthusiastic about learning. He enjoys being creative and working with others. Jeremiah Knudson, Mr. Showalter: Jeremiah is by far one of Washington Colony s brightest students. His work ethic and passion for music make him a force to be reckoned with! Isaac Verdugo, Mrs. Green: Isaac cares about himself, his teacher and his classmates. He works hard and tries to do his best. Alexander Jimenez, Ms. Galleano: Alex consistently demonstrates an excellent work ethic, and manners befitting one much older and more mature. He often helps his teacher or others, even coming in early or staying late. Jocelyn Flores, Mr. Marquez: Jocelyn is a great math student and a member of the WC Math Team. She will have her first competition in February. She always has a positive energy in class and will help other students who need it. very polite. Steven Ramirez, Mrs. Taylor: Steven is a very caring person who is always willing to help his teachers and fellow classmates. He is a leader during class discussions and is usually Gao Le Xiong, (Mandy), Mrs. LeGare: Mandy is learning how to reading using her words and sign language. She is working hard in writing her name using templates with bold letters and dotted letters to trace. She is also learning the value of numbers She is an outstanding student!

She is always considerate of others. Raymond Valenzuela, Mr. DeLaRosa: Raymond puts forth great effort, has a positive attitude, follows directions the first time they re given, and has respect for his fellow classmates. Ziggie Costilla, Mr. DeLa- Rosa: Ziggie is a great student who listens, follows directions and makes sure he is being safe in PE. He has outstanding participation! Sayuri Enyart, Mr. DeLa- Rosa: Sayuri has a great attitude, gives great effort, and is always prepared to listen and follow directions. Carina Ibarra, Mrs. Ervin: Carina is a very caring individual. She cares about her classmates and is kind and respectful to all. She also cares about her school work. She does a great job in Band class and always goes the extra mile. Superintendent s Message, continued (Continued from page 1) members, we were able to raise funds for classrooms as well as having a great time. Thank you to all our teachers and staff for your dedication and time working to make the Carnival a pleasant evening event. Our Board of Education and community enjoyed seeing the students and their families having a good time during the Fall Carnival activities. This is the second year that Mrs. Martinez and the Leadership students have organized this fun event. Thank you for doing such an outstanding job! Just a reminder, please refer to the Student Handbook, page 32, for Foggy Day Schedule information. Also, our 2016 Christmas Program is scheduled for December 9th at 6:00 PM. Be ready to enjoy our children and band students perform- ing and singing music for the holidays. Elena Bermuded, Sr. DeLa- Rosa: Elena tiene una actitud positiva, es bien trabajadora y sigue direcciones la primera vez que son dadas. Es bien considerada de los Raymond Valenzuela, Sr. DeLaRosa: Raymond hace su mejor esfuerzo, tiene una actitud positiva, sigue direcciones desde la primera vez que son dadas y respeta a sus compañeros. Ziggie Costilla, Sr. DeLaRosa: Ziggie es un gran estudiante que escucha, sigue direcciones y se asegura que está siendo seguro en Educación Física. Tiene una gran participación. Sayuri Enyart, Sr. DeLaRosa: Sayuri tiene una gran actitud, hace un gran esfuerzo y siempre está preparada para escuchar y seguir direcciones. Carina Ibarra, Sra. Ervin: Carina es un individuo cariñosa. Se interesa por sus compañeros y es amable y respetuosa con todos. También se interesa por su trabajo escolar. Hace un gran trabajo en su clase de Banda y siempre camina la milla extra. Mensaje del Superintendente, continúa cias a los miembros de la comunidad y a los padres por haber participado, pudimos recaudar fondos para los salones y divertirnos. Muchas gracias a todos nuestros maestros y empleados pos su dedicación y el tiempo en que trabajaron para hacer del Carnaval un evento placentero. Nuestra Junta de Educación y la comunidad disfrutaron ver a los estudiantes y a sus familias divirtiéndose en las actividades del Carnaval de Otoño. Este es el segundo año en que la Sra. Martínez y los estudiantes de la clase de Liderazgo han organizado el evento. Muchas gracias por el sobresaliente trabajo que hicieron. Queremos recordarles que vayan a la página 32 del Manual de Estudiantes para la Información del Horario de día con Neblina. También nuestro Programa de Navidad del 2016 está programado para el 9 de diciembre a las 6:00 PM. Prepárense para ver a nuestra banda estudiantil presentándose y cantando música navideña. US Rocket Club News Congratulations to Tyler, Sophia, Leonardo, Brianna Z., Yvette, and Sayuri on the successful flights of their "Fiesta" rockets!!! And it really was a fiesta, as the 3rd, 1st, and Kindergarten classes came out to watch the fun. After a louder-thanusual countdown (50+ kids make a lot of noise, as any teacher or soccer coach can tell you!), buttons were pressed, igniters fired, and the rockets went skyward. The recovery team played their zone defense well, and all the rockets were brought back in one piece. Even Mr. B's Puke- Green Goblin had a successful flight, landing mere feet from the launch pad. Final score: Rockets: 7. Rocket-Eating Trees: 0. Next up is another group of 4th graders and their "Game Over" rockets.

Noticias del Club de Cohetes Felicidades a Tyler, Sophia, Leonardo, Brianna Z., Yvette, y Sayuri por el exitoso vuelo de sus cohetes Fiesta! Y de verdad que fue una fiesta, ya que las clases del 3º, 1º y kindergarten salieron para verlo y divertirse. Después de un conteo con más ruido de lo usual (50+ niños hacen bastante ruido, como cualquier maestro o entrenador de soccer les pueden decir), botones fueron oprimidos, las mechas fueron encendidas, y los cohetes salieron hacia el cielo. El equipo de recuperación jugó la defensa de su zona muy bien, y todos los cohetes fueron regresados en una pieza. Aun el Goblin color verde feo del Sr. B tuvo un vuelo exitoso, aterrizando a unos cuantos pies de la tarima de despliegue. Los resultados finales: Cohetes 7, Arboles comiéndose a los Cohetes 0. A continuación tendremos a otro grupo de 4º grado y sus cohetes "Game Over".
