3 MY VOCATION STORY This week s space for the Pastor s Perspective has been given to our Parish Vocation Committee to share the following Vocation Story: It all started when I was 15. At that time, being a Christian for me meant going to Mass on Sundays and praying an Our Father or a Hail Mary whenever I was in any kind of trouble. I was preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in my parish. I did not feel much enthusiasm or interest for catechism, and it bothered me that I had to lose an hour on Saturday afternoons. But I did not want to upset my family, and a friend of mine was also going. In the second year, encouraged by the catechist in charge of my group, I began to be more involved in the parish. One day, someone invited me to attend the prayer service held by a youth group once a week. I did not know much about praying. But I left the prayer service with two feelings in my heart: joy and peace. Without me realizing it, or being conscious of it, God had come to meet me. From then on, I went every week to the youth prayers. A desire was born in me to have moments of silence, a great attraction to prayer. I loved going to church and spending long periods of time before the tabernacle talking to that Someone who had suddenly appeared in my life. In a few months, my life had taken a big turn: Christianity was no longer for me a set of rules to follow, but a living person: Jesus Christ; and the Eucharist, which I previously attended with a certain reluctance and indifference, was now a joyful encounter with God. The following year, I got confirmed and began to teach catechism to children. God was the close friend who made me happy and satisfied me. In University Orientation Course, I met three Sisters of an active Congregation. They were young like me, so we quickly became friends. Before me opened a world of which I knew almost nothing about: religious life. In our conversations, they spoke to me about their vocation, their joy in following Jesus, and the question began to emerge in me: Will not the Lord want me to give my life to Him completely? The idea, far from disgusting or scaring me, filled my heart with joy. And so, in that summer of 1992, I decided that I would join the religious life. I went to share the news with one of my parish priests. He advised me not to rush but to continue my studies and mature in my vocation. So, I started the career of Library and Information Science. I liked the atmosphere of the Faculty. Also, I combined my studies with a job that allowed me to have a small amount of money for my needs and wants. Little by little, the illusion of giving my life to God was extinguished in me. I began to think that the religious vocation, which seemed so clear a few months earlier, had been an illusion. I realized the things I would need to give up for me to follow Christ and I began to feel fear. I kept my commitments in the parish, but in my heart, I was moving further and further away from God. I practically stopped praying. I thought that, if I stay away from God, the idea of religious vocation would disappear completely. But I felt more and more dissatisfied and unhappy. There was a bug in my heart that wouldn t leave me alone, and nothing satisfied me... It was this situation when a religious Sister invited me to do the Spiritual Exercises. On the one hand, I liked the idea: I wanted to put order in my life and in my relationship with God. On the other hand, it terrified me: I do not know why, but in the depths of my soul, I sensed that the Lord would take the opportunity to propose His project to me again. My fears were confirmed: once again I felt the call to the radical discipleship of Christ, the deep conviction that my life would only be complete if I gave it totally to God. I remember that I was very angry with God and shed many tears. But deep in my heart, I felt a great peace: God had not forgotten me, nor had He stopped loving me. At the end of the Exercises, I asked the Lord to help me give Him the yes that he asked of me, because I did not feel strong enough.

There was just one more point to clarify: where did God want me to go? One day, I met two contemplative Sisters who were spending a few days in Salamanca for health reasons.

They were from the Order of St. Clare and lived in Villalpando. They offered me an experience in their monastery. So I did. I lived with the Sisters for a month. The simple life in the monastery dedicated to prayer and hidden work... I loved it. I did not miss anything from the outside world. And the Sisters were not strange beings, but very simple and normal people who radiated great joy... I had found my place. A few months later, I left my family and my home and entered the monastery to start a new life given to God. I had found a pearl of infinite value. En aquellos momentos ser cristiana para mı consistıá en ir a misa los domingos y en rezar un Padrenuestro o un Avemaría cuando me veıá en algu n aprieto. Me estaba preparando para recibir el sacramento de la Con irmacio n en mi parroquia. No sentıá demasiada ilusio n e intere s por las catequesis, y me fastidiaba mucho tener que perder una hora, la tarde de los sa bados, pero no querıá disgustar a mi familia y, adema s, alguna amiga mıá iba tambie n. En el segundo an o, animada por el catequista encargado de mi grupo, empece a integrarme ma s en la parroquia. Un dıá alguien me invito a asistir a la oracio n que, una vez a la semana, tenıá un grupo de jo venes. No sabıá muy bien que era aquello de hacer oracio n. Sin embargo, salı de allı con dos sentimientos en mi corazo n: alegrıá y paz. Sin darme cuenta, ni ser consciente, Dios habıá salido a mi encuentro. Desde entonces iba todas las semanas a la oracio n de los jo venes. Habıá nacido en mı un deseo de tener momentos de silencio, una gran atraccio n por la oracio n. Me encantaba ir a la iglesia y pasarme ratos largos delante del sagrario hablando con ese Alguien que de pronto habıá aparecido en mi vida. En pocos meses, mi vida habıá dado un giro grande: el cristianismo no era ya para mı una serie de normas que cumplir, sino una persona viva: Jesucristo; y la Eucaristıá, a la que yo antes asistıá con cierta desgana e indiferencia, era ahora un encuentro gozoso con Dios. Al an o siguiente, me con irme y empece a dar catequesis a nin os. Dios era el amigo cercano que me hacıá feliz y me llenaba. En Curso de Orientación Universitaria conocı a tres religiosas de una Congregacio n de vida activa. Al ser jo venes como yo, pronto nos hicimos amigas. Ante mı se abrıá un mundo del cual yo lo ignoraba casi todo: la vida religiosa. En nuestras conversaciones ellas me hablaban de su vocacio n, de su alegrıá por seguir a Jesu s, y entonces empezo a surgir en mi interior un interrogante: No querrá el Señor que también yo le entregue mi vida por completo? La idea, lejos de repugnarme o asustarme, llenaba mi corazo n de alegrıá. Y ası, en ese verano del an o 1992, decidı que serıá religiosa. Fui a compartir la noticia con uno de los sacerdotes de mi parroquia, que me aconsejo no precipitarme para madurar ma s mi vocacio n. Mientras tanto podrıá estudiar. Comence, pues, la carrera de Biblioteconomía y Documentación. El ambiente de la Facultad me gustaba y,

adema s, compaginaba mis estudios con un trabajo que me permitıá disponer de una pequen a cantidad de dinero para mis gastos y caprichos.

Me di cuenta de las renuncias que supondrıá para mı el seguir a Cristo y empece a sentir miedo.

Llegue a dejar pra cticamente la oracio n: pense que, al abandonar el trato con Dios, la idea de la vocacio n religiosa se irıá apagando hasta desaparecer totalmente.

5 adema s, compaginaba mis estudios con un trabajo que me permitıá disponer de una pequen a cantidad de dinero para mis gastos y caprichos. Poco a poco se fue apagando en mı la ilusio n por entregar mi vida a Dios. Empece a pensar que la vocacio n religiosa, que veıá tan clara pocos meses antes, habıá sido una simple ilusio n. Me di cuenta de las renuncias que supondrıá para mı el seguir a Cristo y empece a sentir miedo. Yo seguıá entregada a mis compromisos en la parroquia, pero en mi interior yo me alejaba cada vez ma s de Dios. Llegue a dejar pra cticamente la oracio n: pense que, al abandonar el trato con Dios, la idea de la vocacio n religiosa se irıá apagando hasta desaparecer totalmente. Pero yo cada vez me sentıá ma s insatisfecha y ma s infeliz; habıá un gusanillo en mi interior que no me dejaba tranquila, y nada me llenaba En esta situacio n me encontraba, cuando una religiosa me invito a hacer Ejercicios Espirituales. La idea, por un lado, me agrado : querıá poner orden en mi vida y en mi relacio n con Dios. Por otro lado, me aterraba: no se por que, en el fondo de mi alma, intuıá que el Sen or aprovecharıá la ocasio n para proponerme de nuevo su proyecto sobre mı. Mis temores se con irmaron: otra vez sentı la llamada al seguimiento radical de Cristo, la conviccio n profunda de que mi vida so lo serıá plena si se la entregaba totalmente a Dios. Recuerdo que derrame muchas la grimas y que me enfade mucho con Dios. Pero en lo profundo de mi corazo n sentıá una gran paz: Dios no se habıá olvidado de mı, ni me habıá dejado de amar. Al terminar los Ejercicios, le pedı al Sen or que me ayudara a darle ese sı que me pedıá, pues yo no me sentıá con fuerzas. Quedaba un punto por aclarar, do nde me querıá Dios? Un dıá conocı a dos religiosas de vida contemplativa que estaban en Salamanca, pasando unos dıás por motivos de salud. Eran clarisas y vivıán en Villalpando. Me ofrecieron hacer una experiencia en su monasterio. Y ası lo hice. Convivı un mes con las hermanas. La vida sencilla en el monasterio dedicada a la oracio n, al trabajo escondido, me encanto. No an oraba nada de fuera. Y las hermanas no eran seres raros, sino personas muy sencillas y normales que irradiaban una gran alegrıá Habıá encontrado mi sitio. Unos meses ma s tarde, deje mi familia y mi hogar e ingrese en el monasterio para comenzar una vida nueva entregada a Dios. Habıá encontrado una perla de in inito valor. Estaba dispuesta a venderlo todo para poseerla plenamente. 6 我的圣召故事这个星期, 堂区通讯神父的话的部分暂停一次, 让堂区圣召委员会来分享下面的圣召故事 : 一切从我十五岁的时候开始那个时候, 为我来说, 作为一个教友, 就是星期天去教堂参加弥撒, 在遇到麻烦的时候念遍天主经或圣母经那时我准备领受坚振圣事, 我对去参加要理班没有任何动力或兴趣, 而且让我烦恼地是每个星期六下午还得浪费我一个小时可是我不愿意让家人不高兴, 而且我的一个朋友也有去参加在第二年的时候, 因为我的要理老师的鼓励, 我开始在堂区里活跃起来有一天, 我被邀请去参加每周一次由一个青少年小组组织的祈祷活动我对祈祷知道的不多, 可是祈祷活动结束的时候, 我心里有两个感受 : 喜乐与平安在我没有认识到或感觉到的时候, 天主来找我从那时起, 我每周都去参加青少年小组的祈祷活动在我心里生出一种对静默的渴望, 对祈祷的极大吸引我开始喜爱去教堂, 并长时间地在圣体龛前, 和突然在我生命中出现的那一位谈话在几个月间, 我的生命有了一个很大的转变 : 天主教为我不再是遵守一大堆诫命, 而是一个活生生的人 : 耶稣基督 ; 而以前不愿意参加的弥撒圣祭, 现在成了与天主相遇的喜乐时刻接下来的一年, 我领受了坚振圣事, 开始教授儿童要理天主是我亲密的朋友, 给我快乐与满足在大学适应课上, 我遇到三位来自传教修会的修女, 她们与我年龄相似, 所以我们很快成了朋友在我面前打开了一个我几乎一无所知的世界 : 献身生活在我们的谈话中, 她们跟我分享她们的圣召, 她们跟随耶稣的喜乐等等, 有一个问题开始在我里面生发 : 难道上主愿意我把自己的生命完全献给他吗? 这个想法没有让我感到恶心或害怕, 而是让喜乐充满了我的心所以, 在 1992 年的夏天, 我决定要度献身生活我去和我的一位堂区神父分享, 他建议我不要匆忙, 而要继续完成我的学业, 让圣召更加成熟所以, 我开始图书馆和信息科学专业的学习我喜欢这个学院的氛围, 另外, 我一边学习, 一边做着一份让我赚取些零用钱的工作我想把自己的生命奉献给天主的想法一点一点地消失了我觉得几个月前很清晰的献身生活圣召成了一个幻想我意识到为了跟随基督我必须要舍弃的东西, 让我开始害怕起来我仍然忠实地区参加堂区的活动, 但我心中越来越远离天主我几乎不再祈祷, 我觉得如果我离开天主, 献身生活的圣召就会完全消失但是我感到越来越不满足, 不快乐我心中有某种东西抓住了我, 任何事都不能满足我就在我的这种情形时, 一位修女邀请我做神操一方面, 我喜欢这个主意 : 我想要整理我的生活以及我和天主的关系 ; 另一方面, 我感到害怕 : 我不知道什么原因, 但是在我灵魂深处, 我意识到上主将用这个机会重新提起他对我的期望我的害怕证实了 : 我重新再次感受到完全成为基督门徒的召叫, 并坚信唯有完全献给天主, 我的生命才会完整我记得那时我对天主特别气愤, 并掉了许多的眼泪但在我内心深处, 我感受了极大的平安 : 天主没有忘掉我, 也没有停止爱我在神操的结束, 我祈求上主帮助我对他的召叫回答是, 因为我感觉不够坚强只有一件事需要弄清楚 : 天主要我去哪里? 有一天, 我遇到两位隐修会的修女, 她们因为健康原因在萨拉曼卡 (Salamanca) 待上几天她们来自比利亚尔潘多的圣佳兰隐修会她们邀请我去她们的隐修院体验生活, 我就去了我和修女们在一起住了一个月隐修院虔诚祈祷及默默工作的简单生活我喜爱这种生活我没有缺少任何来自外面世界的东西, 而且这些修女不是奇怪的生物, 而是特别简单而正常的人, 散发着极大的喜乐我找到了我的归属几个月之后, 我离开家人, 加入隐修会, 开始了献给天主的新生活我找到了一颗无价的珍珠, 我愿意变卖一切为完全拥有它玛丽亚卡门德梅尔加修女 (Sr. María del Carmen de Arriba) 天主教病患关怀团敬请天主教病患关怀团的成员於 3 月 6 日 ( 星期二 ) 晚上七点半在郭中翹女士的家 (949 Bay Ridge Ave) 聚会希望每一位成员都会出席, 一起为病人祈祷! 堂区四旬期避静我们堂区的四旬期避静将于 3 月 18 日 ( 星期天 ) 在底层教堂举行, 从上午十点到下午四点希望每位教友都踊跃参加
