UM Faculty votes for collective bargaiig Faculty at the Uiversity of Motaa Friday chose the U iversity Teachers Uio to represet them at Collective bargaiig. The uio wo by a wide margi votes out of 389 cast. The America Uiversity Professors received 63 votes i the electio ad the Motaa Educatio Associatio received 9 votes. Aother 65 fac ulty members voted for o represetatio. I the wake of the electio, Walter Hill has aouced his resigatio to lhe UM faculty Seate. Hill was o record agaist collective bargaiig. Uio leaders said they would set up a bargaiig cousel i the ear future ad try to fid ways to reistate faculty who will lose their jobs this year. (For a idepth report watch Friday's Expoet.)

2 Saua Seator Hatt ield A ukow quatity Max Baucus smiles i his sleep. "Cogratulatios, Max, o your electio to the U.S. Seate. soo you'll succeed Lee Metcalf o Capitol Hill as the Juior seator from Motaa was a good year for you Max. First, you wo the Democratic primary, beatig a political ukow amed Joh Driscoll (after scarig ol' Tom Judge right out of the race). The you scored a relatively easy victory over your Republica oppoet i the geeral electio. Oh, sweet dreams." Wake up Max. The evets of the last te days have altered that scea~io. Lee Metcalf died uexpectedly, ad the state of Motaa ow has a ew seator amed Paul Hatfield. Hatfield was a district court judge i Great Falls for 17 years before beig elected Chief Justice of the Motaa Supreme Court i Goveror Judge, who appoited Hatfield last Suday, described Hatfield as a fie judicial mid. But what are Hatfield's qualificatios for the job of seator? He himself said that the heavy caseload as chief justice hi!s kept him less iformed about atioal issues tha the ordiary layma. "Oly time will tell," Hatfield said of his future impact as seator. Not exactly ecouragig words to hear. Hatfield did say that state's rights had bee eroded by federal itervetio, ad that he is cocered about the "cotiuig ifrigemet of federal activity o the sovereigty of the state ad the lives of our people." We have heard this type of rhetoric before, both from Democrats ad Republicas. Just exactly what it meas is aybody's guess. Hatfield wo by more tha a two to oe margi over his competitor, Justice Wesley Castles, whe he was elected Chief Justice. This would idicate that Hatfield is a potetially strog vote getter, ad that he would stad a cbace i a electio bid later this year. He did't say at the press coferece followig his appoitmet if he would ru, but it seems ulikely that he would give up his $37,000 a year positio o the Supreme Court, a positio that is secure for the ext seve years, oly to sped less tha a year i Washigto. Judge said that if Hatfield does ru, he wo't. Baucus said that he iteds to stay 1 te race o matter what. The rest of us will kow by April 27, the filig deadlie for cadidates. I the meawhile, let's hope that Hatfield cotiues i the progressive mold set by the late seator Metcalf. Motaa eeds someoe that will stad up for the eviromet, ad up to the coal compaies. Motaa eeds someoe who is iterested i helpig the averaqe perso, ad ot oly those with political ad/or fiscal muscle. We already kow where Baucus stads. As for Hatfield, well. oly time will tell. Curve throws Dear Editor, I respose to a Huma Female, I thik her letter just goes to show how true the Huma Female Developmet Curve is. If she actually believes that a real survey was take ad that data was kept, she fits had-i-had with the metality portio of the curve. THIS GIRL is probably a sorority chic~ who is, at the preset time, hal(way through the "seior paic" portio of the persoality lie o the curve. She is udoubtably aother oe Bruce Burrows bitter over her grave mistake of joiig a sorority, ad this article gave her somethig to vet her frustratios o. Maybe a ope-mided look at this article ad ay future articles to come would be educatioal ad humorous for her. She could accidetly lear how to get alog with males. As for myself, I do't care if the liberated wome get o top of the situatio or take it lyig dow, I just hope they take it _.. :;. A_Huma Male ucomfortable Bookstore aex eeded KUDOS to CEC of ASMSU To Editor: The art ad architecture studets should be aware of how much the MSU Bookstore is cheatig them out of studet services. They have set up a aex ext to the art buildig to supply the art studet with large sizes of paper materials that become damaged if they were carried frqm the Bookstore. The studets have used this aex quite ofte cosiderig the amout of supplies it has i its spacious room. The Bookstore wats to close the aex because of lack of busiess. Why? There is't eough supplies available. May people who use the aex (who try to keep it i busiess) are lucky if they ca fid a few items that they'll eed for a class. That meas writi'g aother check at the mai Bookstore. Oe of the solutios that has bee attempted was to make a list of supplies that the studets wat brought to the aex. The list was brought to the Bookstore. They said that each oe (except for some small items) Missig the poit? To all my fas ad critics, This is absolutely the last letter I'm goio to write about the Sherril icidet--we're startig to flog a dead horse. The poit I wat to make about all those who complaied whe Sherril was idetified as a football player is that they are missig the poit. Sherril was also idetified as a busiess major ad o outcry arose over that statemet. I would also like to complimet, ad thak, Dey Klewie, Soy Lubick ad the other members of the campus admiistratio who devoted so much time ad effort to their ivestigatio. It was obvious, thr,.,ugh their itese efforts, that they are seriously cocered about such problems o campus. I would also complimet Taylor Brow, ad the people from CEC, who gave the Vetera's Club so much support--morally ad physically i this matter; they made our job a little easier. The overal I cocer ad attetio paid to this matter by faculty, staff ad studets shows that MSU is ot co tet to overlook such matters. I ca really say that I made the right choice whe I chose MSU as my school. J. William Degel was a icoveiece. Oe was zi c plates. The Books.ore metioed that the reaso they could't provide large 24 ich by 36 ich zic plates i,tie aex is because they come i crates ad it would be too icoveiet to sed some to the aex. If they ca brig a cargo of zic ad uload it at the Bookstore, why could't they brig some to the aex? It would be better tha have a studet attempt to carry oe to the art buildig. I cold weather, the metal freezes i the perso's hads, its treacherous walkig dow the icy hill for fear of fallig o the plate ad its hazardous durig heavy wids. There are solutios to these problems without closig the aex if the people at the Bookstore could see just how they are't providig the studet services expected of them. If they could oly utlize the space more carefully. This letter was received with 23 sigatures. Space limitatios prohibit listig them idividually. These etertaiers ot oly deliver the goods, but their humor ad humae presece get you off ad smilig. But somethig must be said about the absece of vetilatio i the Ball Room. Gove metioed it was too hot ad you did't have to be very close to see the other musicias sweatig. The crowd pays too much moey to be subjected to a uwated, ucomfortable mass saua. Such a ubearable atmosphere has a egative effect o the mood ad sese of well-beig of a audiece. It is ot fair to the etertaiers or the high payig cosumers to have to put up with this discomfort. Somethig should be doe ow about vetilatio i the Ball Room. Greg Jah Correctio Last Friday's issue of the Expoet icorrectly idetified Waye Scherr as Waye Scheer. Soory. The audiece loved them from the very begiig. Whe Doc walked o stage someoe from the audiece yelled " Put some logs o the fire," ad he proceeded to do so. Doc Watso's fast guitar pickig performace was everythig ad more tha I had heard it would be. His ability to play various styles of music with precise cotrol captured the MSU audiece. Doc ad the boys etertaip.d a audiece of 1,400 with traditioal America music which icluded blues, ~outry ad bluegrass. Their easy movig music set may people swayig i their seats ad hummig alog with the sogs. Silece overcame the crowd whe Doc sag "Wake up Little Maggie" a sog he said his " pappy" used to sig. Doc Watso was bor i North Carolia i 1923 ad was blided three moths later by a eye ifectio. Music was impressed o him as he grew up by his father who was a church choir leader. Watso bega playig o a had--crafted bajo as a youg boy but later picked up o his "first love," the guitar. 53-year-old Doc Watso goig strog. The cocert opeed with the excellet performace of Gove (Scriver), a taleted blues folk siger bor i Coecticut, but who ow lives i Nashville. Gove's talets are may ad he used them well to mesmerize the audiece. He bega o a six-strig guitar with " Strager Blues," ad wet o to play a little Bach ad Beethove o the autoharp. He eve played some old--time disco, "Old Howard is Dead ad Goe", a sog that souded like it origiated o a souther platatio. Gove performed i a coffee -house style which seemed to produce a feelig of closeess betwee him ad the crowd. Gove met up with Doc Watso at a Philadelphia club i Sice the they've played with each other o several albums ad i various shows.
