How effectively can you start practicing sustainable consumption? Recycling The number of contributors to selective rubbish disposal is increasing, but just a few local administrations have made it an official program. But whether a city has such a program or not, you can still do something. The NGO CEMPRE (Compromisso Empresarial para Reciclagem) offers useful tips on how an apartment building or neighborhood can implement selective rubbish disposal. It also provides a list of cooperatives that pick up waste material at people s houses. Buying sustainable products It s still difficult to find products from eco-friendly and socially aware sources; however, they do exist and are entering the market more and more. When buying wooden furniture, for example, require the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification stamp. Recognized worldwide, the FSC is a guarantee of proper forest management. Saving water It s the same old complaint: What can one person do? However, imagine a world without enough water and you realize that you ve got to help. But how? WWF Brazil has launched a campaign that shows how to make sure your grandchildren and even your children will have the pure water they need. Among other things the campaign provides tips on minimizing water use. Remember, if 10 million people in São Paulo use one liter less of water per day well, you get the idea. And above all, don t throw oil or petroleum products into the sewage system, because the cleanup is unbelievably difficult. You should store the used oil in a plastic bottle and throw it into the trash (better yet, selective trash). See if your city has an oil-recycling program.
