1 Richmond Civic Theatre February 1, 2013 THE STAGE DOOR Now Playing... Based on the novel by John Steinbeck Adapted by Frank Galati Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York Directed by David Cobine Feb 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. Feb 10 at 2 p.m. RCT s next production is a challenging and powerful adaptation of a great American novel that recorded one of the most difficult chapters in American history. The Grapes of Wrath, based on John Steinbeck s novel, will come to life at RCT for two weekends: February 8, 9, 15, 16 at 7:30 p.m., with a 2:00 matinee on Sunday February 10. The Grapes of Wrath, set during the 1930s, vividly portrays the struggles of ordinary people who have lost their homes, incomes and way of life as a result of two disasters: the economic disaster of the Great Depression and the environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl. Specifically, it follows the Joad family, share-croppers in Oklahoma who lose their farm, load their meager possessions and themselves onto an old rattletrap truck and make the difficult long journey to California with dreams of a new beginning and a better life. They face setbacks, losses and mistreatment. But against these hardships they reveal remarkable strength, resilience, decency toward others and a growing anger against injustice. The Grapes of Wrath definitely shows both the ugly and the heroic in human nature. Like Steinbeck s book, the play contains language that might offend some. The language and the difficult story of the Great Depression are not intended for younger children. Guys and Dolls A Musical Fable of Broadway Based on a Story and Characters of Damon Runyon Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser Book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows Presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI) Directed by Charity and Greg Hawkins with musical direction by Jon Hudnall and choreography by Regina Branagin Dates: Tuesday, February 12 and Thursday, February 14 Times: 6 to 8:30 p.m. We are looking for mature and well-seasoned actors, ages 20+, who have excellent vocals, great articulation and projection. You must be able to represent the character s age on stage in order to be considered for the role. The show is set in 1950 s New York. We are not looking for authentic New York accents, but by all means you may try one! Please come prepared to sing, read and be taught a group dance. Nathan Detroit: Character age - 35 to 50 Vocal range - Baritone to high F Audition song: Sue Me. Nathan is funny and romantic. He has been engaged to Adelaide for 14 years, but married to the crap game for longer. Comedic timing and great vocals are a must. Sky Masterson: Character age - 30 to 50 Vocal range - Baritone B to E flat Audition song: I ll Know. Sky is the epitome of 1950 s cool. His story line has nice growth; sinner to saint, quintessential bachelor to walking down the aisle. Must be able to command the stage, but not overly cocky. Smooth characterization and strong vocals. Sarah Brown: Character age - 25 to 35 Vocal range - Soprano to high A Audition song: I ll Know. Sarah is a sergeant in the Salvation Army at Times Square. Sarah has the most character growth in the show. She starts out straight laced, ends up tipsy in Havana, then heartbroken, yet madly in love with Sky. Strong actress and singer. Adelaide: Character age 30 to 45 Vocal range - Mezzo to A Audition song: Adelaide s Lament. Adelaide is devoted to Nathan, having been engaged to him for 14 years. She really wants to settle down, but she is getting tired of Nathan s crap game. You are welcome to try a character voice for Adelaide, but be prepared to drop it if asked. This clever character needs to be portrayed as such. Strong vocals and good comedic timing. Nicely-Nicely Johnson: Character age 30 to 50 Vocal range - Tenor to high B flat Audition song: Sit Down, You re Rockin the Boat. Best buddy and crapshoot partner to Nathan Detroit and has some of the funniest lines in the show. Comedic timing and excellent tenor skills are required. Benny Southstreet: Character age 20 to 50 Vocal range - Baritone to high G Audition song: Fugue for Tinhorn. Benny is one of Nicely s pals. This guy really needs to be able sing. Arvide Abernathy: Character age 55+. Audition song: More I Cannot Wish You. Arvide is Sarah s mentor and leader of the Salvation Army in Times Square. Nice fatherly figure. Crap Shooters : Audition song: Guys and Dolls. Handsome gamblers that can sing and dance. Some men will be offered other male roles, i.e. Big Jule, Rusty, Harry the Horse, etc 2 Hot Box Girls: Audition song: Bushel and a Peck. Sexy Kittens that can sing and dance. Some of the ladies will be offered other female roles, i.e. Martha, General Cartwright, etc
3 Auditions Barefoot in the Park By Neil Simon Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York Directed by Ruthanne Bolling This romantic comedy by Neil Simon had a wildly successful run on Broadway in 1966 and was made into a film starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda in Newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratter move into a small apartment in New York City after their six-day honeymoon. While Paul tries to prove himself as a young lawyer in the courtroom, Corie not only sets up their place, she also sets up her anxious mother with their peculiar neighbor. Corie s efforts to have fun and spice up her mother s life lead to a wild night on the town and the newlyweds begin to wonder if their differences are too extreme. They (and we) learn a lot about compromise and what it takes to be in a relationship. If you d like to be a part of this wild romp, please consider auditioning on Sunday, February 10 and/or Monday, February 11, 6-8 p.m. at RCT. Audition materials will be available at the theatre soon.
