2 About Redtwist Theatre Redtwist Theatre, formerly Actors Workshop Theatre, embarked upon its first production as an itinerant company in 1994 with Simon Gray s Otherwise Engaged. AWT incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation in May It produced five more plays before moving to its current home in the vibrant Bryn Mawr Historic District of the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago in the fall of The double-storefront was transformed from an office-like community center into an intimate and comfortable theatre and classroom space. Redtwist s first show in Edgewater, Praying Small, opened in September It was designated as a Critic s Choice by the Chicago Reader and was extended two times by popular demand. Michael Colucci, the founder of Redtwist Theatre, is the Artistic Director. His producing partner and wife, Jan Ellen Graves, is the Media Director. She directed the critically-acclaimed The American Clock by Arthur Miller and the Jeff-nominated play Aura by company member, Tommy Lee Johnston. 3 Welcome to my Favorite Theatre! Please indulge me if I use this space to say that Redtwist is my favorite theatre. That may seem obvious, but I especially like a few specific things about a Chicago storefront, and Redtwist in particluar. I love (a) the intimacy of this space, and being right on top of the thrilling action of a great play (b) the flexibility of our black box whereby we can redesign the stage and audience into any configuration for every show (c) odd as it sounds, I really enjoy our gray cushioned chairs they are large, sturdy, and comfy (d) I appreciate a clean restroom, and I suspect you do too. There must be a reason why Chicago theatre has become iconic. And it might be because of the very experience you will be having here at Redtwist. Grab a beverage and a snack at the box office window, bring it into the theatre, and settle in for the show. Thanks for coming! Michael Colucci, Artistic Director Please turn off your cell phones. Out of respect for the actors, please do not access your cell phones for any reason during the performance. Dramaturg s Note: STAFF/CREW PROFILES (continued) Ireland isn t idyllic, and the Aran Islands aren t meant to be a tourist trap. This is a place not of rolling green hills, but of stone walls and churning waves. These are a people that have only managed to eek out a living by creating their own farm land out of ground seaweed. There isn t space for much else. Inishmaan isn t supposed to be an escape but a prison something nasty, brutal, and short. Leave your preconceived notions about McDonagh at the door as well. There are the usual tropes, of course violence, insults, and harsh reality but there s something else in the town shop as well. Something that could almost be called happiness. Restaurant partner coupons for Bryn Mawr establishments are available at the box office window during intermission and after the show.
