3 Editor s Desk When I joined the GLCS a few years back, the bylaws stated that the club was devoted to lotology; the collecting of lottery tickets and lottery memorabilia. For most of us, that world of memorabilia consisted of scratch-off lottery tickets, as demonstrated by the 50,000+ tickets we have in the scratcher list. For a small group of the other collectors, there were other items that some members also possessed, but weren t specifically identified, track, and published in any club guide. I have a couple of bags of buttons, pins, coins, and other goodies that I received at Lotoventions, with a collection passed on to me, or from a lottery agency. I really didn t pay much attention to these other items except admiring them when I happened to be looking for a particular scratch ticket. Over the past year or so, interest arose in adding the Passive ticket guide to the website lotology.net. This information was based on the Passive ticket guide developed by Walter Johnston and passed on to me by Mary Martin. At first I attempted to simply add a new section of the website. But around the 1 st of January I did some rethinking on that strategy and decided to add all those other collectibles. In essence they are all candidates for a collectible item. We needed to separate them somehow, but make them appear in a format that people were used to. Categories was the answer! So I embarked on a two day re-programming exercise for the website, and added Category as a piece of information we now track for every item (no longer just scratcher) in the database. On the cover of this month s issue you see examples of the five categories we now have in the lotology.net database. They are (drum roll) button, pin, pull-tab, passive and scratcher. We now track these separately in the database, by state. I am in the process of adapting the lists of items on the lotology.net and club websites to this world of collecting. Watch the websites for a new way to select the category of item you wish to see. At the moment, everything defaults to scratchers, but that will soon be changing. I found some tickets! What do I do with them? Occasionally we receive from someone filling out a contact form on the club website. It goes something like this: I was cleaning out a basement and I found a box of lottery tickets worth millions! Do you know someone who would be interested in them?. We would respond with a polite trying to help the person decide what to do with the new find. In some cases we spent time simply trying to find someone to go pick the tickets up before they went in the trash! We have now developed a standard response and will be adding information to the club website about out what to do. Namely, we will accept tickets from anyone who wishes to send them in. We ll take a look and add any that are unknown or needing an image scan to the online guide. The tickets will then be advertised as a lot or perhaps broken up into smaller lots in the club newsletter for all members to see. If they are purchased by a club member, the person donating will receive 50% of the proceeds with the other 50% going to the club treasury. That way, the person can contribute to the club with the possibility of receiving something back if the membership sees value in the items. The submitter s investment is a little time and postage. If they have a large number of tickets and they are destined for recycling, we ll still pursue arranging to have them picked up. Hopefully this standardized response from the club will make it easier for all of us. LOTOVENTION 2015!. Steve Gilbert has secured our space at the Sheraton Four Points for this year s Lotovention. Make your room reservation early and we ll see you there, along with mountains of tickets! Look for information on page 3 in this issue of Lotologist Monthly. 4 President s Message Now that we are in the middle of the winter season, I hope you are getting a chance to work on updating your collections. Also, please continue to collect new tickets to send to Ron this month. I m sure your state lottery has issued some Valentine Day themed ones. Our web master has been designing some additions to our web site. Mary Martin and myself have been busy sending material to Gil for him to add to these additions. When they are ready, look for announcements in Lotologist Monthly. An article written about our hobby for the lottery trade magazine La Fleur was finally published. I was interviewed after meeting the author at the NASPL lottery convention in Atlantic City, NJ last September. Hopefully you will enjoy reading it. I believe the next NASPL convention will be held in Dallas, TX in the fall. If you are interested in attending contact me. Remember our next Lotovention is July 31st to August 2nd, 2015 in Philadelphia. Mark the dates on your calendar and plan on attending. If you have any suggestions on what you would like to do or see at this year s Lotovention please send them to me. I m always looking for new ideas to make the Lotovention bigger and better for you, our membership. Also, it is not too early to think about sending your extra tickets and raffle items to me. I will gladly store them until the Lotovention. Happy collecting! Steven Gilbert Vice - President( ) President ( ) stegil919@aol.com Lotologist Monthly February

6 Usually, La Fleur s Magazine focuses on only the new things in this industry the newest games, the newest promotions. But sometimes it is a good thing to take a look back, and that is exactly what this story is on. Not the lottery directors, but the consumers who appreciate the hard work lottery officials put into each game. In the summer of 1992, Steve Gilbert was out with his friend Gene in Philadelphia. The friend asked him where he could find the nearest Pennsylvania Lottery retailer. When they finally found the retailer, Gene bought five of each ticket. Amazed, Gilbert commented that Gene really liked scratch tickets. Stand down public relation lottery officers; his friend did not have a gambling problem. In fact, Gene was collecting instant games for an organization that shares new and used tickets. At first, Gilbert had no intention of become a collector. He simply helped his friend by sending him scratch tickets, and his friend would send him back tickets from other states. But it didn t take long for this non-collector to acquire a large collection of scratch tickets from around the world. Gilbert was hooked, and he quickly joined the organization known as the Global Lottery Collector s Society. Instant Ticket Collectors (reprinted by permission La Fleur s Magazine) The Global Lottery Collector s Society is a group of collectors who prefer collecting instant games over playing them. These collectors go out of their way to find tickets from around the world. The organization held its first meeting in 1989 at the home of its first president and cofounder, Bill Pasquino. The gathering is now an annual event. It has been dubbed Lotovention. Members come and bring thousands of tickets to trade with other members. And the event truly is global. One couple in the club journeys all the way from France. Their collection includes a ticket from Some members collections include tickets that are valuable, and they sell their tickets online through ebay. Gilbert himself has never sold his tickets for his own profit because his goal is to collect. The club has at times auctioned tickets off with part of the profits going to members who needed support to get tickets that they otherwise could not get. Fast forward two decades, you can imagine that Gilbert s collection has grown to quite a large size. His oldest ticket is the first ticket issued in Massachusetts in 1973/1974. The name of game was as simple as it possibly could be The Instant Game. The first tickets that started in my collection were from Pennsylvania. There were three sets for sale in The first was Cook Out Cash. It is a set of six tickets with a food coupon attached. The second was another set of six tickets called Forest Fortune. These six tickets featured an attached design of forest animals that formed a picture when you bought all six and left them attached. The third was called Monster Cash. This is a set of eight tickets featuring a Halloween theme of Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy and Werewolf in two different colors of orange and violet, he explained. Gilbert s favorite tickets though aren t his oldest. He loves any ticket that has to do with sports (hockey, football or baseball) as well as entertainment themed tickets (movies and TV shows). However, one of the tickets that Gilbert used to collect but is not widely available anymore is the state vacation spots. These tickets costs $1 to $2 and depicted photos of destinations within that state. For instance, in Pennsylvania, tickets would include photographs of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Bushkill Falls. As a collector, Gilbert believes that scratch tickets games will always be popular, and he isn t worried that lotteries instant games will take away from physical scratch tickets. In fact, he believes going online would be a good thing for the lotteries. Anything new to the lottery, I feel would be welcome as long as the average game is not too complicated to understand and play. Change is always good. It keeps it fresh for the players to try something new, said Gilbert. Lotologist Monthly February
