2 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC FOREWORD 前言 1 The treasures from our audio collection at RTHK s Record Library 在香港電台音樂資料庫的珍藏 2018 sees 90 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong. Radio 4 s celebration events appear in the last quarter of the year. Starting in October and continuing for nine Saturday evenings at 8, we present Concert Hall Classics RTHK s Treasured Recordings of Live Performances. This series brings us on a musical walk down Hong Kong s memory lane. We will have a chance to admire the dedication and musicality of performers who together have helped to shape Hong Kong s musical past. It was difficult to pick just nine concerts from the vast audio collection at RTHK s Record Library. But, somehow a choice has to be made. The first concert, from 1979, has the household name Fou Ts ong in the limelight. He visits Hong Kong frequently. This one was special not just because he played two concertos in a single concert, but also because he teamed up with conductor Thomas Wang and the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra, part of the Music Office, the music promotion body inaugurated just two years earlier in In 1958, 60 years ago, the then Radio Hong Kong celebrated 30 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong with a spectacular Cantonese Opera Stars Gala. Many of the most prominent star performers appeared at the Gala. They were accompanied by two ensembles, led by Wan Chi-chung and Lo Ka-chi, maestros of Cantonese music. This dream team s reappearance on-air is an extremely rare treat not to be missed. In 2012, it was City Hall s 50th anniversary. At that time, we tried to locate in RTHK s Record Library, concert recordings made by the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) under conductor Malcolm Sargent to perform at the new venue. Our search had no success. But, one day last year, a library colleague asked if I would be interested to look at some old open reel recordings at our storehouse. I was over the moon when I was there examining the dusty pile of tapes which contained the LPO s 1962 recordings. More than that, among it was the complete recording of the first concert ever given at City Hall the performance on 4 March City Hall had officially opened just two days earlier! Such a historical and melodious moment must be shared with you. The time was 24 years later in It was another touring orchestra. Led by conductor Li Delun, the Central Philharmonic Orchestra made its first appearance in Hong Kong since it was founded three decades ago. This visit happened about eight years after China adopted its reform and open policy. The programme reflected the artistic direction taken by the Orchestra then. It opened with a Chinese piece, followed by arguably the most famous piano concerto of the western repertoire and closed with a powerful symphony by Shostakovich that was close to the hearts of many Chinese musicians who received Soviet training. Music historian Oliver Chou has written a cover story to let you know more about this interesting line-up. In addition to this concert series, as part of RTHK s 90 Years of Broadcasting Exhibition, a number of Young Music Makers will give a joined recital on 2 December at the Hong Kong Cultural Heritage Museum. Last but not least, on 24 December, RTHK s yearlong celebration will end on a high note with this year s Christmas Concert in the Park! Jimmy Shiu Head, Radio 年是香港廣播九十年, 由第四台負責的相關慶祝活動在第四季展開 10 月起, 逢星期六晚上 8 時, 我們率先推出一連九集的音樂廳經典 香港電台珍貴現場錄音, 希望透過多場歷史性演出, 讓我們重溫香港走過的音樂路, 細味當年一眾音樂家的熱誠和造詣 要在港台音樂資料庫的海量珍藏中選出九場音樂會播放談何容易, 這過程的確是魚與熊掌的決定 本月先登場的有家傳戶曉的鋼琴家傅聰 他雖曾多次來港獻技, 但這場音樂會的特別之處, 不單在於他一口氣演奏了兩首協奏曲, 更在於與他合作的是由汪酉三領導的音樂事務統籌處香港青年交響樂團 那是 1979 年, 音統處只成立了兩年 1958 年, 香港電台慶祝三十週年, 一群絕對是巨星級的名伶走在一起, 舉行了一場粵劇紅伶滙, 負責拍和的小組由粵樂大師尹自重和盧家熾領班 這個夢幻組合能重現大氣電波中, 聽眾 ( 特別是戲迷 ) 當然不容錯過! 當 2012 年慶祝大會堂開幕五十週年時, 我們曾經嘗試在港台音樂資料庫尋找當年倫敦愛樂樂團聯同指揮大師沙俊來港獻技的錄音, 可惜找不著 去年有一天, 資料庫的同事問我有沒有興趣到貨倉看看一些開卷式錄音帶 當我在一疊封塵的盒中發現該團的錄音時, 簡直興奮至極, 更美妙的是在這些遺珠之中, 正好有大會堂開幕後的第一場音樂會, 日期是 1962 年 3 月 4 日, 即大會堂開幕僅兩天 這歷史性的一刻, 怎能不與你分享? 同樣是訪港樂團, 時間卻推後至 1986 年 成立於五十年代的中央樂團, 由指揮家李德倫帶隊, 於中國改革開放以來首次訪港 曲目多少反映樂團當年的藝術取向 : 音樂會以中國作品展開, 接著是在西方鋼琴協奏曲中極為著名的一曲, 然後以蕭斯達高維契一首澎湃非常的交響曲作結 對受蘇聯體系訓練的樂手而言, 這位作曲家的名字一點也不陌生 請來音樂歷史學者周光蓁為本期封面故事執筆, 讓我們對上述錄音有進一步的了解 除了這系列之外, 為配合香港廣播九十年展覽, 一眾樂壇新秀將於 12 月 2 日在香港文化博物館演出一場 ; 而今年平安夜舉行的聖誕園林音樂會亦成為香港電台慶祝廣播九十年的壓軸活動! 更多詳情將於 11 月及 12 月的 美樂集 公佈 Radio 4 would like to thank the patrons for their generous support. 4 4 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC SPECIAL FEATURES 特稿 Nobuya Sugawa is an internationally acclaimed saxophone player of whom Japan is very much proud. He has won the prestigious prizes at the 51st Music Competition of Japan, and also triumphed at the 1st Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. It will be Nobuya Sugawa s third visit to Hong Kong this October and Jennifer To talks to him on his choice of programme. JT : Jennifer To NS : Nobuya Sugawa JT : What is your impression of the city? NS : I am already excited when I think of the dazzling night-time panorama from the Peak, and how inspiring the city of Hong Kong is, where diversified cultures around the world meet. I also enjoy the comfortable balance of historic and new cityscape in Hong Kong. JT : Many saxophonists have arranged their own versions of the Debussy s Rapsodie before. What attracts you to the piece, and what new ideas are you bringing to your upcoming performance? NS : Originally, the saxophone part was rather limited in this unfinished piece by Debussy. For this occasion, after valuable discussions with the orchestra, we have created and crafted additional saxophone parts in order to make the best use of the instrument: some parts are like melancholic whispers, and some others are quite voluptuous. There are parts that are just majestic sounding. Accompanied by wonderful playing of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, I would like to show the audience the saxophone s charms as an established classical music instrument. I would very much like to deliver saxophone music which has tones like the human voice, expressing our sufferings, joys, and love. JT : What made you commissioned the Ballad from the Turkish composer Fazil Say? Did you work with the composer on the composition and what do you like best about this new piece? NS : I earlier commissioned the Suite for Alto Saxophone and Piano from him, and we had a chance to perform the piece jointly in Tokyo and Osaka in Since then, we have been in very good communication. I commissioned him to compose the saxophone concerto, Ballad. In the Ballad, you ll find a number of phrases that display Turkish poetic sentiment rooted in historical background. Also, you will see the skills and techniques that are unique to the saxophone tactfully employed to impressive effect. You will also hear some percussive sounds and sounds like the plucking the strings throughout the music. The piece, accompanied by dynamic rhythms of percussion reaches its climax with rapture. JT : You have played and recorded classical, contemporary and even jazz pieces. How do you switch from one style to another? NS : I listen to music of various genres and grasp the essence of each, but do not see myself playing music of many different genres. What I am trying is to commit myself to studying and acquiring traditional styles and nuances of different types of music, and pass them to the generations as classical music and as performing arts. JT : There are more and more young saxophone players in Hong Kong. What is your most important advice to them (apart from practice, practice, practice)? NS : I would say, keep one s eyes and ears open. Try to experience music of different styles. 5 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC SPECIAL FEATURES 特稿 5 Jennifer To Trailblazer and Champion of the Saxophone When we think of a master, seldom do we associate the privilege with the saxophone, which many still considered it primarily a jazz or pop instrument. However, it all changed with Nobuya Sugawa. Not only did he remain in a leading position of the outstanding Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra from 1989 to 2010, with his influence, there came a great surge of interest in the potential of the saxophone and wind band repertoire. Sugawa s dedication to the instrument has opened new musical horizons for the classical saxophone. His worldwide exposure also firmly established Japan as one of the exponents in the saxophone world. Versatility and Virtuosity Sugawa Sensei (as he is greeted by most of his students) is considered one of the leading saxophonists and pedagogues in his native Japan, who is equally at home in classical, contemporary jazz and even pop genres. He is best known for bird-themed works, for which he has collaborated with Takashi Yoshimatsu and Toshio Mashima to critical acclaim. His discography also includes concertos by Glazunov, Ibert, and Larsson, staples of the classical saxophone repertoire. Together with his wife, pianist Minako Koyanagi, Sugawa has performed various arrangements of classics, including Mussorgsky s Pictures at an Exhibition and Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue, which put the saxophone to full use. I was fortunate to hear the Gershwin on Sugawa s first visit to Hong Kong and the opening glissando was every bit as smooth and magical as you would hear from a clarinet! In addition to performing standard classical repertoire, Sugawa has commissioned and performed new works by Chick Corea, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Edward Gregson among others. He is also a member of the Trouvère Quartet from Japan, one of the most longstanding and active ensembles in the industry. Accolades and Honors A graduate of the Tokyo University of Arts (formerly named Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music), Sugawa was the recipient of the highest prizes in the Wind Instrument Category at the 51st Music Competition of Japan and for the Saxophone category at the 1st Japan Wind and Percussion Competition. Throughout the year, Sugawa performed about 100 concerts annually. He has also given master classes at music colleges throughout Japan, Europe, and the States. Receiving the Hamamatsu Art and Culture Special Award in 1996, Sugawa has been appointed as an ambassador of Hamamatsu City in Each summer, he joins world renowned saxophonist Jean- Yves Fourmeau, Otis Murphy, and other Japanese virtuosos at the Hamamatsu International Wind Academy, where saxophonists from all over the world gather to learn and perform. Sugawa has also devoted his time in improving and advancing the designs of the saxophone. Classics and Premieres in Hong Kong October sees the return of Sugawa to Hong Kong in an exciting programme with two Hong Kong premieres: Toshio Hosokawa s Blossoming II, inspired by the deep roots of flowers in Japanese aesthetics and spirituality, and Turkish composer Fazil Say s exotic-sounding Ballad for saxophone and orchestra. Sugawa gave Ballad its premiere in Tokyo on 18 July this year. The programme also includes the ever-controversial Rapsodie by Debussy, in a brand new arrangement by Sugawa himself. The work was commissioned by Elise Hall, an amateur saxophonist from a prominent Boston family and president of the Boston Orchestral Club. Debussy accepted the offer reluctantly in 1903 and never willed himself to complete the task. The work was delivered to Mrs. Hall in 1911, with the orchestral parts in sketches. The work was not completed until 1918 when Debussy s friend Jean Roger-Ducasse finished the orchestration. The saxophone part, although finely wrought in Debussy s signature style, was scattered throughout the piece and lacked the appeal to audiences, who were used to extended solo passages in a concerto, and saxophonists, who expected ample opportunities to show off. The piece was shelved and fell into obscurity. It was not until recent decades, when saxophonists including Eugene Rosseau, Claude Delangle, and Vincent David made their own arrangements that there was a renewed interest in the Rapsodie.

First of all, today is my birthday Boss darling, good night, much much love and many many kisses. Fely The Bernstein Anniversaries Recital was broadcast on Leonard Bernstein s birthday, on the evening of 25 August, the 100th birthday of the American composer, conductor, and educator. In the recital, Warren Lee not only played excerpts of the great musician s piano solo works but also teamed up with his two best friends in the performance of the composer s works of other genres. And perhaps the focus was on Leonard s own letters and the letters to him. Felicia Montealegre was a Chilean stage and TV actress, who later became Bernstein s wife. She can be heard as a narrator on his recording of his Kaddish Symphony. The legendary pianist Claudio Arrau, who was Felicia s piano teacher, brought the couple together in You may have listened to many of Leonard Bernstein s hits of his Broadway musicals, Tonight and I Feel Pretty from his West Side Story, I Can Cook Too from On the Town, etc. However, there are many more stories that you may have never heard about. Pianist Warren Lee has successfully projected the true person to the audience by playing his favourite musical instrument, as well as reading many of the writings about the composer in the recital. Warren Lee started working on this early in the Bernstein Year and not only played Bernstein s works on the piano but also read from his family letters and other texts. Through his preparation and research, he delivered the life of the composer he was allrounded and so real. In the performance, clarinettist Andrew Simon played Bernstein s only sonata for the instrument with the letter reader. Soprano Nancy Yuen, who knows very well in Bernstein s musicals, sang two best-known melodies in the recital as a birthday present to the composer. As it comes to the final month, we have been receiving inquiries from interested applicants who are eager to share their music on air. Is this a good time for me to join YMM? 問: 我是應屆DSE考生 參加 樂壇新秀 不是好時機吧 答: 兩年前我參加 樂壇新秀 時也是中六學生 YMM給了我一個在應付考試時放鬆 的空間 讓我在繁重的學業中抽離 用音樂來舒緩考試時緊張的情緒 我現在是理 工大學醫療化驗科學的二年級生 雖然我不是讀音樂 但也有繼續彈古箏 若你今 年也要考DSE 不要擔心 快來報名吧 I was also a DSE candidate when I participated in YMM two years ago. YMM gave me a time to relax and take a break from my busy and intense schedule. I am now a year 2 student in Medical Laboratory Science at the HK Polytechnic University. Although I am not music major, I continue to enjoy playing the guzheng! So if you are also a DSE student, don t worry and join YMM! Q: It seems YMM is for senior music students? I am just a young kid. Maybe I won t be selected at all? A: I was a 13-year-old Form 3 student when I joined Young Music Makers and I was the youngest successful candidate in recent years. YMM was a challenge to me but gave me memorable experiences. The biggest lesson I learned was to be brave and step up to the plate. I did not have any studio experience, so it was a big challenge for me when I did my TV filming and radio recording. I decided to set a higher standard to myself and hope for a better result. YMM has given me many opportunities to take up challenges. 11 14 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 音樂廳經典 香港電台珍貴現場錄音 Oliver Chou 周光蓁 To celebrate the 90 Years of Broadcasting in Hong Kong, Radio 4 has selected four historic performances out of their decades of recordings for weekly airing in the month of October. These performances, one from each decade in the 1950s through the 1980s, are not just musical notes of the past, they are musical milestones and key components of the city s collective memory. 6/10 (Sat) 8pm Fou Ts ong and Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra The first concert in the series is a live performance by the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra recorded at the City Hall Concert Hall on 21 October It was the sound of 90 young players selected from 2,500 instrumentalists from 11 to 24 years of age under the new Music Office founded only two years earlier. Coached by conductor Thomas Wang, the group had just returned from an extensive tour of the UK to perform this concert as a part of the Fourth Asian Arts Festival. The programme started with the Overture to Wagner s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, followed by two concertos, Mozart s 25th and Beethoven s First, with Fou Ts ong as the piano soloist. It was the time of China s reform era, and optimism was in the air for the pianist as much as for the Hong Kong youngsters, among whom some are now masters in their own right, including Ivan Chan, Yang Helan, Frederick Lau, Joanna Lee, Homer Li, Chiu Kai-keung, Ng Ka-ming, to name a few. Chan, then a teenage violinist and now a senior lecturer of strings at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts after a successful career with the Miami String Quartet, remembers the Meistersinger : I was struck by its grandeur and was completely blown away by the sound and sheer volume that the brass section was capable of generating. As for his part in the Rossini Third Sonata for string quartet performed between the concertos, it really was the precursor to my career in chamber music. It could well be an unprecedented fanfare to feature not one or two but seven Cantonese operatic legends to perform one after another. The list started with Sun Ma Si-tseng singing his signature work Emperor Guangxu s Night Mourning of His Concubine Zhen, followed by Fong Yim-fun, Mak Ping-wing, Tam Sin-hung, Ho Fei-fan, Tang Bik-wan, and Leung Sing-po. These performances testify to the notion that the 1950s was the golden era for Cantonese opera. It is also noteworthy that these masters were accompanied by two ensembles led by equally legendary bandleaders. It is rare in those days to see names of musicians as in Wan Chi-chung s 8-member band and Lo Ka-chi s 17-member band. A likely reason for the full rosters was the new policy adopted by Radio Hong Kong around 1957 to air only stars and professional musicians, a major departure from previous air-time for amateur music groups possibly due to the new Societies Ordinance. This concert is a case in point.

But who attended the five concerts under the baton of Sir Malcolm Sargent, much less the Inaugural Concert on 4 March 1962? Former legislator Edward Ho was there, first as a Hong Kong Philharmonic violinist and HKU architecture student performing acoustics tests before the launch, and then in the audience for the London Philharmonic. With the new hall, I could experience for the first time a major, world class orchestra in the right setting. Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) played in the Lee Theatre! Ho exclaims, referring to the 1959 VPO concert in Hong Kong. In addition to the full programme of works by Ireland, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky, and Sibelius, the broadcast will also include an exclusive interview with Maestro Sargent on his first visit to Hong Kong as a part of their Asian tour celebrating London Philharmonic s 30th anniversary. Under the baton of Maestro Li Delun, the 1 September programme started with Moonlight Reflected in Erquan, a traditional erhu piece orchestrated for strings, which had its premiere under Li with the visiting Philadelphia Orchestra in No orchestras played the melancholy mood as well as the 60-plus Central Philharmonic string players, many of whom were erhu masters. Professor David Gwilt noted that the performance always had a beguiling lilt to the rhythms and, in the melody, with the little slides and thrills of authentic erhu playing. The next two works were the real test for the Chinese players. If Gwilt felt the Tchaikovsky s Piano Concerto No. 1 was too slow, despite brilliant playing by pianist Shi Shucheng on a badly out-of-tune piano, the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony worked towards a magnificently forceful conclusion. This live performance may well be Li s only surviving recording of Shostakovich s Fifth. With this rare recording, we are very lucky to be able to take a glimpse into what my grandfather spent his life on, helping his people to appreciate music during a special time in the past, Zhang Kemin, Li s grandson, remarked upon hearing about the live recording.

15 SUNDAY OPERA OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 21 Sundays 2:00pm Lo King-man Prof. Lo King-man, producer and director of numerous opera productions in Hong Kong. Sunday Opera programmes in October start with an unfinished monumental work that signifies the magnificent conclusion of the glorious tradition of romantic Italian opera. Three relatively rarely heard masterpieces straddling the late 19th and early 20th centuries will be presented in the following weeks, including an exotic legend from imperial Russia, a poignant tale of faith and martyrdom during the French Revolution, and a Czech expressionist drama about a young woman driven to suicide in a remote rural community. 7 October: Puccini s Turandot Giacomo Puccini ( ) journeyed to Brussels for his fatal throat cancer operation. He brought with him 36 sheets of annotated sketches for the final love duet and triumphal scene of his spectacular grand opera Turandot. He did not live to finish the work. Franco Alfano, then director of the Turin Conservatory of Music, was given the task of completing the opera based on those sketches. At the first three performances of the premiere at La Scala Theatre of Milan in 1926, conductor Arturo Toscanini stopped the music at the point where Puccini ceased writing. He told the audience: Here, the master laid down his pen. Critical and musicological opinions in posterity generally agree that Turandot is the last great work that brought the glorious tradition of romantic Italian opera to its ultimate conclusion. Adapted from a fairy-tale commedia dell arte style drama by the Venetian playwright Carlo Gozzi, the opera tells how, in legendary ancient China, the cruel princess Turandot is transformed into a passionate woman by the love of Prince Calaf of Tartary. In the process, the act of self-sacrifice of the slave girl, Liu, provides the catalytic motivation. The recording selected for your enjoyment features a cast of superstars with Australian soprano Dame Joan Sutherland in the title role as the icy princess, Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti as Prince Calaf, and Spanish soprano Monserrat Caballé as the slave-girl Liu. The British John Addis Choir and the London Philharmonic Orchestra offer an exciting performance under Indian conductor Zubin Mehta. Poster for Puccini s opera Turandot in 1926 Joan Sutherland, soprano, and Luciano Pavarotti, tenor 14 October: Rimsky-Korsakov s Sadko The idea of creating a major musical work based on the ancient Slavic legend of the kingdom of sea fairies was suggested by Modest Mussorgsky. The 23-year old Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov ( ) took up the challenge and drafted a symphonic poem entitled Sadko in The opera bearing the same title was completed 30 years later and received its premiere in Moscow in Vladimir Galusin, tenor The story relates the adventures of Ukrainian sailor and musician Sadko, his friendship with the King of the Oceans, and his love for the princess who is destined to be transformed into a river. The composer s extraordinary skills in orchestration and melodic invention were amply evident in the score which contains many enchanting arias of exotic oriental flavour, including the famous Song of India. Recorded in the Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg by Valery Gergiev who conducts the Kirov Orchestra and Chorus, with tenor Vladimir Galusin in the title role and soprano Valentina Tsidipova singing the part of Princess Volkhova.

16 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 October: Poulenc s Dialogues des Carmélites The origin of this moving opera, Dialogues des Carmélites (Dialogues of the Carmelites), was a German short novel entitled The Last on the Scaffold by Gertrud von Le Fort, published in This was adapted into a French play by Georges Bernanos and staged in Paris in Francis Poulenc ( ) reconstructed the play into a libretto for his second opera, which he composed between 1953 and The finished work was given its world premiere in January 1957 at Theatre La Scala of Milan. Dialogues des Carmélites confirmed Poulenc s reputation as a composer of especially fine vocal music. The text is largely set in recitative with a poignant melodic line and lush tonal harmonies true to the composer s characteristic personal style. The opera was highly praised by the critics, describing its inexorable dramatic movement as impressive and extremely moving. It remains one of the very few post-puccini operas that have succeeded in maintaining a firm position in the international repertory. Kent Nagano, conductor Benjamin Ealovega The story concerns the deep psychological experience of the protagonist Blanche through the events of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution, her fear of mob violence that leads to her becoming a nun of the Carmelite order, her witnessing the agony of death at the convent, her escape on the eve of the closure of the Church, and her resolution to join her sisters in prison as martyrs on the guillotine scaffold. Singing the role of Sister Blanche is soprano Catherine Dubosc. Her close friend, Sister Constance, is sung by soprano Brigette Fournier. Mother Marie is performed by mezzo-soprano Martine Dupuy, and the old and new Prioresses are respectively sung by contralto Rita Gorr and soprano Rachel Yakan. Blanche s father, the Marquis de la Force, is portrayed by bass José Van Dam. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Opera of Lyon are conducted by Kent Nagano. The recording was made by Radio France in October: Janáček s Káťa Kabanová Káťa Kabanová by Leoš Janáček ( ) is a powerful work of intense emotional and psychological depth. Composed during , the opera was one of the high points of Janáček s career, when, at the age of 65, he fell passionately in love with a woman 37 years younger named Kamila Stosslova, who passively received his affections without reciprocating, but remaining the source of his inspiration leading to the glorious late flowering of his genius in the last decade of his creative life. Elisabeth Söderström, soprano Káťa Kabanová was written in a strong declamatory style with heightened dramatic expression and rich orchestral colours. The vocal line follows closely the Slav linguistic inflections while evocative instrumental passages conjure up the harsh atmosphere of the drama. The plot centres on the protagonist Káťa s struggle against the oppressive rural traditions of peasant society represented by the tyrannical and rigid moral attitudes of her mother-in-law. In our recording, soprano Elisabeth Söderström sings the title role, with mezzo-soprano Naděžda Kniplová as her mother-in-law and tenor Peter Dvorský as her husband. The Vienna State Opera Chorus and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra perform brilliantly under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras. Peter Dvorský, tenor

17 26 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 Different Sonic Colours in Jazz Saturdays 10:00pm John Chen 陳國平 For the Oct Jazzing Up series, we will focus on the topic of sonic colours in jazz. When we think of jazz, very often our immediate attention is in the direction of music performed by a group of instrumentalists playing bass, drums, and piano, plus other standard jazz instruments such as electric guitars, saxophones, trumpets, and perhaps with or without a jazz singer. However, we also know that many different genres of jazz also incorporate many other less-common instruments or mixes of instruments, resulting in all kinds of amazing sonic colours. In this series, we will hear the sounds of standard jazz instrumentation and other western instruments such as harmonica, 12-string guitar, classical guitar, string quartet, violins, vibraphone, mandolin, cello, accordion, and non-traditional vocals. I will also bring to your attention some of the sonic elements that bring about the unique colours featured in the selected songs. For example, for the general listener, the rhythmic content of a piece of music is usually understood as a musical element separate from the sonic colour. However, we also learned that our senses towards the sonic coloration of a piece of music is actually a form of sonic perception resulting from not just the sounds of different instruments but also the accompanying rhythms, grooves, harmony, and textures. Some of these will be pointed out during the programme. Saturday Night Jazz In the coming programmes, we will present a variety of jazz recordings, some by standard jazz instrumental groups, and others with solo instruments or less-common western instruments. Some of them are almost easy listening, designed for a relaxing Saturday evening. For example, Earl Klugh s She Never Said Why, which includes his classical guitar along with string quartet type instrumentation, plus harmonica and harp, and without drums nor any typical jazz grooves, provides us with a very different type of sonic colour less commonly found in jazz music. As such, the song almost sounds like a piece of romantic sounding impressionistic music. The sounds of the acoustic 12-string guitar can be regarded as one of the less common jazz instruments. But in the hands of Larry Coryell and Ralph Towner, each playing with their own unique styles, we hear a rather refreshing sonic colour under the umbrella of jazz music. Aided by Technology In the modern days of music technology, sometimes we have jazz musicians trying to create something new with the help of some form of technology but without having to accept the more ubiquitous electronic sounds, and keeping the sonic characteristics of acoustic instruments. Pat Metheny, in his CD Orchestrion, produced a unique type of ensemble music using acoustic and acoustoelectric musical instruments that are mechanically controlled in a variety of ways, using solenoids and pneumatics. As a result, the overall sonic colour is different from a piece of all human performed music. We will hear compositions from that special project of his. In this October series, we have music by widely known jazz masters including John McLaughlin, Dave Brubeck, Gary Burton, Stéphane Grappelli, Carla Bley, and Charlie Byrd. Other famous artists but perhaps less well-known in jazz to Hong Kong audiences, include Yo-Yo Ma, Ralph Towner, Patti Cathcart, Bobby McFerrin, and David Grisman. Experimentation and Fusion In general, jazz musicians are perhaps more creative and experimental than musicians from other genres. Many of them spent their whole life trying out different instruments and instrumentation mixes in search of new sonic colours and expressions. For example, guitar giant John McLaughlin s heavy progressive rock oriented style as exhibited in his Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 1970s fused electric jazz and British guitarist John McLaughlin performing at Saveurs Jazz Festival, Segré, France. Later, he moved to an all-acoustic instruments approach (including Indian instruments, musical expressions as well as Indian rhythms in his bands) and composed music for guitar with classical orchestra. As a result, throughout his 60 years of music exploration, we hear an amazing gamut of sonic colours in his ever-evolving jazz music. We will hear samplings of these from his early and more recent recordings. As for the voice, it is understood that its basic sonic colour starts with the unique tone that each singer is born with, unlike instruments. In jazz, it seems easier to find higher degree of uniqueness and acceptance of something highly personalised. In addition to the majority of the more typical of general jazz singers, we also have a few with their highly personalised style, and sonic colours such as Bobby McFerrin and Patti Cathcart. We will hear some exciting music by these artists. We think the jazz music selections for the coming month is very exciting with a wide variety of sonic colours. We are confident you will enjoy every minute of each programme. You may have different opinions on this issue, but the answer to most of the Israel people seems to be Yes. Last month, an Israel radio station apologised for playing the music of Wagner, who remains a controversial composer in the country. His apparent antisemitism and the use of his music by the Nazis made his works unofficially banned or not played in Israel due to widespread public opposition. The Israeli classical music radio station Kol Ha Musica played the final scene of Wagner s opera Götterdämmerung on 31 August, later receiving a few complaints. Two days later, the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation apologised, saying the editor erred in his artistic choice to play the piece. They also stressed that the instruction has remained unchanged for years: Wagner s music would not be played to avoid bringing back the painful memories of Holocaust survivors. Many orchestras in Israel tried to break with the tradition in the past. In 2011, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra played Wagner s Siegfried Idyll in the Bayreuth Festival. Its conductor, Robert Paternostro, expressed that the orchestra wanted to separate Wagner s ideology from his art. The Head of the Israel Wagner Society, Jonathan Livny, has similar thoughts this time, welcomed the public broadcast. 19 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 29 Chiang Wai-man Chiang Wai-man 蔣慧民 逢星期五下午 3 時正 節目分四個部份, 共八集 : 第一部份合唱文化自西徂東第二部份中西文化交匯的花果 中國內地 1949 年至二十一世紀初已於 9 月份播出, 聽眾可於香港電台網站 (rthk.hk) 重溫 至於 10 月份將播出以下各集 : 第二部份 ( 續 ) 寶島台灣的合唱在台灣, 無論原住民或漢族居民, 既有本土的民歌傳統, 也有由教士傳來的西方合唱 作曲家有留學日本的江文也 郭芝苑, 留學歐美的許常惠 錢南章 馬水龍等, 黃友棣和林聲翕則活躍於港台兩地 合唱曲代表作有許常惠的 葬花吟, 林聲翕的 山旅之歌, 錢南章的 馬蘭姑娘 等, 至於較近期年輕的一輩有冉天豪的創作及改編合唱曲 願 和 不了情 等 這些合唱歌曲展現了中國傳統的韻味 原住民音樂特色以及西方音樂的影響 第三部份 南邊疆上的奇花異果香港的合唱創作 在中國南疆的香港, 其合唱曲有以不同語言創作的, 如林樂培的早年合唱作品 啊! 太陽花 陳永華的大型合唱曲有以拉丁文譜曲的 謝恩讚美頌, 紀大衛的 三首中世紀歌曲 則有家鄉音樂的特色 還有以中國傳統或現代詩詞譜寫的合唱曲, 如林樂培結合了傳統與現代手法的大型合唱代表作 塵埃不見咸陽橋 林聲翕的 你的夢 曾葉發的 陽關三疊 陳能濟的 兵車行 黃鶴樓 等 此外, 陳偉光的徐志摩詩作 泰山 羅永暉的 雨霖鈴 施金波的 草茵上 符任之的 大江東去 許翔威的 竹里館 等, 這些合唱曲題材 內容和風格各異, 反映香港的多元多樣 第四部份本色與原創的聖頌至於中華的聖頌創作, 除了前述陳永華的 謝恩讚美頌 外, 還有李超源的本色無伴奏合唱創作 聖靈歌, 曲調是詞調 如夢令, 詞是國人依詞譜所填 林聲翕也有聖樂創作 清唱劇 五餅二魚 和聖頌 萬祝之門 林樂培為天主教會寫了許多禮儀詩歌 陳偉光每週為其教會譜曲, 也為教會重建奠基禮譜寫了 主基督, 房角石 在海外仍以華人自居的黃安倫寫了不少大型聖樂作品, 而當中的 詩篇二十二篇大衞之詩 是用英文譜寫的 期望整套八集的合唱曲目, 能讓聽眾鳥瞰中華合唱百多年來所走過的路, 嘗過所結出的一些果子, 相信其味道也會進入了大家的記憶中, 也許當中有些會縈迴心耳之間 In October, every Friday at 3pm in Music from China (Cantonese programme), Chiang Wai-man continues the topic of Chinese choral music. Part 2 continued: Choral music in Taiwan In Taiwan, western influence from Christian missionaries is obvious, but Chinese as well as aboriginal influences can also be found. Part 3: Choral music in Hong Kong Western cultural influence is quite apparent in Hong Kong s choral compositions. 34 48 OCTOBER 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 Coming Soon: RTHK Chamber Soloists 快將登場 : 香港電台室樂演奏家 Raymond Chung 鍾子豪 Growing out of the RTHK Quartet, the brand new RTHK Chamber Soloists would like to meet you in their Inaugural Concert next month! The two founding members of the Quartet, Le Hoai-nam (violin) and Laurent Perrin (cello), team up with Andrew Ling (violin/viola), John Schertle (clarinet), and Colleen Lee (piano) to explore a wider range of music repertoires. Having one more player means a bigger voice and a more colourful sound. During the recent photo session in the studio, I could feel their passion in music making. With their musical instruments held in their hands, they immediately started to make music, to improvise, and create something beautiful. I can feel the deep connection between these five musicians. They have known each other for a long time and have the same vision in and love of chamber music. They also want to share that love with their audiences. Before their Inaugural Concert in November, they would have already visited the campus of the Lingnan University in late September. The RTHK Chamber Soloists will continue their mission in promoting chamber music. Keep your eyes on this new logo and discover a lot more chamber music making.
