2 JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC FOREWORD 前言 1 From The Desk of HR4 掌台人隨筆 Happy New Year! A new year is a perfect time to look back, and look ahead. A review of 2017 has reminded me of a musically eventful year with so many great performances, some of which were broadcast on Radio 4 and are still available on our website. It was also a year of accomplishments for Hong Kong in terms of musical awards and creativity. On a sad note, we lost a few music icons who contributed their lives to shape Hong Kong s cultural contour. Take part in the Top 10 Music Headlines 2017 to remember the special year. Looking ahead, 2018 will have no short of thrilling events on Radio 4. Our long-standing Artist-in-Residence series will return with three highly accomplished musicians. Harpist Dan Yu, guzheng player Lou Jing, and pianist Rachel Cheung will grace our airwaves in March, May, and July respectively. The first of the recital series marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Debussy with two works by the great impressionist performed live in Studio One. The other important anniversary to remember is the centenary of the great conductor, composer, and educator Leonard Bernstein in August. You can hear a number of concerts featuring his works and performances. There will also be a special series which includes musicians sharing their memory of the late maestro. In looking ahead, I am also reminded of new music, which has always been on Radio 4 s agenda. As in previous years, Intimacy of Creativity, New Generation, International Rostrum of Composers, and Musicarama can all be heard on Radio 4. You may also like to know that the Musicarama concert which was cancelled due to the typhoon last October will be staged on 30 January. We will record it and you can hear it on Radio 4 next month. When looking to the future, of course, we look to our youth. This year sees the 70th anniversaries of the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and Speech Festival. In addition to the usual RTHK Radio 4 Chinese Instruments Scholarship, Choir Finals, and Winners Concerts, we will also bring you a special feature to go with the gala performance in September. Other than that, a school outreach programme ( I m a Fine Music DJ ) in collaboration with LCSD s Music Office will also be launched. Putting together new music and youth, Radio 4 will partner with the Hong Kong Composers Guild to present another Match-making Concert in April. It s a refreshing showcase of young Hong Kong composers works performed by Radio 4 s Young Music Makers! A lot is happening on Radio 4 this year, and I haven t yet mentioned the interesting line-up of broadcast concerts from venues here and afar. In fact, 2018 marks the 90th Anniversary of Radio Broadcast in Hong Kong. One of the celebration items on Radio 4 is a collection of some treasured concert recordings we made which will be brought to you in the later part of the year. Stay tuned for an exciting year on Radio 4. The musicians opened the concert with Schubert s unfinished quartet work Quartetsatz, D Mendelssohn s Four Pieces for String Quartet, Op. 81, was played afterwards. It is a piece that combines the composer s four different quartet works written in various stages in his life. The main work of the concert was the String Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 27, by Grieg. Double stops are applied to depict the colours and styles of Norwegian folk music. Last fall, they visited the CCC Kei Sun Secondary School. With the introduction from the Music for Community, the musicians performed music excerpts from the Baroque Period to modern times, from classical western chamber works to Chinese folk tunes. The junior class students not only enjoyed the live music making but also were curious about the musicians lives. They asked interesting but difficult questions to the Quartet and were advised to just let the music speak! While the workshop was taking place in Fanling, our guest violist Felix Ungar s first baby was born. 6 JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC SPECIAL FEATURES 特稿 7 Musical Exchange in Macau 澳門音樂交流 A few days after the school visit, the new father with the other three Quartet members went to Macau to take part in the Spring Music Festival organised by the University of Macau String Orchestra (UMSO). The concert took place in the University Hall on the evening of 20 November. The Quartet performed Grieg s String Quartet No. 1 in the first half, and three members joined the string orchestra for the second half under the baton of the conductor, John Ma, our guest violinist. The programme not only included classical masterpieces, such as Holst s St. Paul s Suite and Tchaikovsky s Swan Lake but also some popular movie music. This joint orchestra was a good demonstration of musical exchange between Hong Kong and Macau. 昂錦猶初為人父幾天後隨四重奏前往澳門, 參加由澳門大學弦樂團主辦的春天音樂節 在 11 月 20 日晚上, 他們與澳門大學弦樂團一同演出 四重奏在上半場演奏了葛利格的 G 小調第一弦樂四重奏 下半場節目, 他們與澳門大學弦樂團同台演奏 由馬步萌擔任指揮, 帶領樂團演出包括柴可夫斯基的 天鵝湖 莫扎特的小夜曲, 以及一些家喻戶曉的電影配樂, 盡把同學努力綵排的成果與觀眾分享, 也促進了港澳兩地音樂交流 2018 年, 香港電台弦樂四重奏將繼續努力, 為樂迷擦出火花! 7 8 JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC SPECIAL FEATURES 特稿 Tiina Osara Renowned French flautist Patrick Gallois has enjoyed a versatile career as orchestra musician, soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. His repertoire is equally diverse and shows a strong taste for contemporary music. Here he speaks to Livia Lin about what keeps him striving for the next level. L: Livia Lin P: Patrick Gallois L : You studied flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal and became Principal Flute of L Orchestre national de France at just age 21. What prompted you to leave the prestigious orchestra and launch your solo career after seven years? P : After seven or eight years, I was thinking I needed to explore my possibilities. I don t think I had the choice for my life at that time. Life is making sure that what I do is right for me and that I succeed everywhere. Sometimes you need to stop and think about what you want to do in life. And that was the main point of stopping the orchestra for me. I had enough money to live, to live well, and to practise, and I practised a lot. The problem with the flute is we have very few repertoire choices from the 20th and 21st centuries. I needed to know what I could do with my modern instrument. Everybody plays Bach and Telemann, but my voice was a modern instrument. Also, I wanted to know if I wanted to conduct or play. Even today it s not clear! The Lonliness of the Travelling Soloist L : So at that time you were going with the flow and deciding your direction as an artist. You ve had a fabulous solo career since then. What do you find different between being an orchestral performer and a soloist? P : Being a soloist is complicated. When you play in an orchestra, you follow the conductor. When you play a concerto, you don t need to follow the conductor you need to follow your ideas. Another question is what you want to express when you play a concerto. And then, you need the help of the conductor to put the orchestra with you. The first few years were difficult for me because I was still a musician from an orchestra, and it s completely different. For example, any good player in an orchestra can play a concerto fairly well but it will be very different with a soloist because the reading of the text is completely different. Actually, I think I was alone for a long time in memorising every concerto, like a pianist or violinist. Also there is another problem, which is not nice: when you are a soloist, you are alone. There was a time in my career when I did 200 concerts every year so it was terrible, I was alone all the time. You have no time to make friends; you arrive, you play, and you leave. The Importance of Friends L : After all these years, do you enjoy more being an orchestral performer or soloist, or would you rather perform chamber music so you have friends? P : Yes, it was what I was doing, I work a lot with my friends actually. I have kept the same friends since the beginning at the Paris Conservatoire. Sometimes, soloists need people to exchange ideas, spirituality, why we do music, how we do it, what to read. We need to exchange because we cannot be the best everywhere. You know only a small part. This is interesting: when you have ten people who know a small part of an entity, maybe you begin to understand the music better. After a while, with my orchestra in Finland (the Jyväskylä Sinfonia in Jyväskylä, Finland), the musicians asked me if I wanted to be Artistic Director of the orchestra because I was always conducting. My first reaction was no, I don t want to do that because it is a responsibility, but they insisted and so I said OK, I ll try and it worked very well. That was great because to exchange music and do research with the same musicians for a long period is the best present you can give to a soloist. It was amazing because going every morning to work with the same musicians and developing that for nine years was a dream. I stopped because, after doing 30 or 40 CDs, I began to be tired of the repertoire. I wanted to move the repertoire. I wanted and needed a bigger orchestra, which was the main reason I stopped with my orchestra. Life continues. You grow when you learn something. When you know something, this is a problem. I m afraid about what I know. I m afraid about my knowledge. I like to discover. Learning from the Actors L : That s very interesting and inspiring for a lot of musicians out there, I m sure. Your discography demonstrates how wide your repertoire span is: from delicate Baroque music by Telemann to the new tango of Piazzolla to Takemitsu s avant-garde style. How do you handle all the technical and stylistic challenges? P : We are like actors. You need to be an actor. You need to relive the music. First when you do music, you need to love it. You need to be in it, like an actor who has one personnage (character). But we are also better than actors because we are not only one

8 Arts Happenings 藝壇快訊 personnage: we are ten personnages. You can be feminine or masculine, dead or alive, grumpy, happy, and sometimes at the same second you can be many personnages. I think this is like an actor. When you do Molière or Shakespeare, it will be another way of speaking or another instrument. An actor uses different kinds of voices to speak something. When you are with a great singer, they can sing music with specific intonation and colour. For example, I m thinking of Lulu by Alban Berg, with Teresa Stratas and Pierre Boulez in Paris. That was an event! I think I went 20 times to the Opéra de Paris 40 years ago to be stunned every night because she changed her voice totally to sing Lulu. This is the same. If you do Baroque music, your voice is completely different. You are acting. If you are Dr. Jekyll, we know you are not the same voice as Mr. Hyde. We are everybody. We are always different. When I speak with you now, I am different if I speak with you tomorrow. If I speak with my mother, my child or wife, I will be different. I think everybody is different every time. What is fantastic is to have this experiment also with an instrument. There is another problem with a career because people always want you at your best, your most attractive, your fastest, creating a better sound, the best. But the best for what? The best for Debussy? The best for Telemann or the best for Berg? I m not sure. I think we have a lot else to learn from actors. transcribed by Deborah Henning Pavel Vaan & Leonid Semenyuk Russian Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky Dies at 55 俄羅斯男中音霍洛斯托夫斯基病逝 Charles Chik 戚家榮 Hailed as one of the greatest baritones in the world, Dmitri Hvorostovsky died on 22 November 2017 in London. He was 55. Born in Siberia in 1962, Hvorostovsky started learning piano at the age of 7. He grew interested in singing when his father enrolled him in a choral conducting course, which led him to study at the Krasnoyarsk School of Arts. He emerged as a rising star after winning the Russian Glinka Competition and the Toulouse Singing Competition. He shot to fame after he defeated Bryn Terfel to win at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 1989 and thus launching his international career. He was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland of the IV degree for his contribution to Russian art and culture in September Many have expressed their grief and condolences over the death of Hvorostovsky. Words cannot express my anguish that one of the greatest voices of our time has been silenced, said world-renowned tenor Plácido Domingo. He added that Hvorostovsky s beautiful voice and peerless artistry touched the souls of millions of music lovers. The General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, Peter Gelb, described Hvorostovsky as One of opera s all-time greats, truly an artist for the ages, and the Met dedicated a performance of Verdi s Requiem to this superstar. Radio 4 will record three concerts from this year s Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival for broadcast on 20, 27 January, and 3 February (Sat) at 8pm in Live on 4, with repeats on 25 January, 1 & 8 February (Thu) at 2pm. 13 SUNDAY OPERA JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 17 Sundays 2:00pm Lo King-man Sunday Opera inaugurates the New Year with a pioneering American work that fuses classical style with jazz, blues, and musical theatre; a naturalistic lyrical romance about Parisian life; a heroic tragedy on the theme of medieval chivalry; and a powerful Russian tale of passion and adultery. 7 January: Gershwin s Porgy and Bess Considered by many to be the greatest and most original indigenous American opera, Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin ( ) was inspired by DuBose Heywood s novel and his play written with his wife Dorothy Heyward, Porgy, which the composer had read in Gershwin knew immediately that this was the ideal subject for him to turn into an opera and the authors were most happy to let him set it to music. The set at the Boston premiere production in 1935 The Gershwin brothers, George and Ira It was not until 1932 that work could begin, with DuBose Heywood and Gershwin s brother Ira co-writing the script and the lyrics. It took the composer eleven months to complete the piano score and nine months to orchestrate the opera. The world premiere took place in Boston in 1935 and ran for 124 performances. The music draws on folk idiom, popular tunes, jazz rhythms, and negro spirituals, with all these elements ingeniously combined in an entirely original artistic creation. This work of genius contains numerous pages that have become evergreen classics. Of these, Sportin Life s song It Ain t Necessarily So and Clara s lullaby Summertime are justly famous. The plot depicts life of a poverty-stricken community in Catfish Row, a black tenement on the waterfront of Charleston in North Carolina, focussing on the triangle love relationship between Porgy, a crippled beggar; Bess, a submissive woman; and Crown, her violent and possessive former lover. The overall tone of the opera is tragic, with a touch of optimism towards the end when Porgy sets out on his journey to New York to find his beloved Bess. Alex Tam will present a fine recording featuring some of the best black opera singers including bass-baritone Willard White in the role of Porgy, soprano Cynthia Haymon as Bess, tenor Damon Evans as Sportin Life, and soprano Harolyn Blackwell as Clara, supported by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Glyndebourne Chorus conducted by Simon Rattle. 14 January: Charpentier s Louise Premiered in 1900, Louise by Gustave Charpentier ( ), who wrote both the music and libretto, was labelled by the composer as a musical novel. The work was so successful that over a hundred performances were staged at the Paris Opera during the first year of its existence. It remains a unique French naturalistic opera depicting the everyday experience of working class people in a highly evocative picture of contemporary Parisian life. Louise admirably brings together many different elements with ingenious artistic devices, among them a simple yet attractive musical language, memorable melodies, subtle realism, atmospheric verisimilitude, believable characters and situations, poetic sensibility, and exaltation of love and liberty. At the time of its creation, it was a daring work. The story tells of factory girl Louise s love for the poor young poet Julien and her eventual elopement with him for a happy but penniless existence in the Monmartre district, escaping the unbridgeable generation gap between her and her parents. Romanian soprano Ileana Cotrubaș In our excellent recording, Louise is interpreted by Romanian soprano Ileana Cotrubaș. Julien is portrayed by Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo. Louise s father is sung by French baritone Gabriel Bacquier, and the mother by mezzo soprano Jane Berbié. The Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the New Philharmonia Orchestra of London perform under the baton of Georges Prêtre.

14 JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 19 Prof. Lo King-man, producer and director of numerous opera productions in Hong Kong. 21 January: Verdi s Ernani Hulton Archive Victor Hugo, the French poet, novelist, playwright, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. This early work of Giuseppe Verdi ( ), the fifth of his 28 operas, was written for the prestigious Teatro La Fenice of Venice. It marked his first collaboration with the librettist Francesco Piave who, for the next 20 years, was to be his most frequent creative partner. When they decided to base their new opera on Victor Hugo s drama Hernani, produced in 1830, they were choosing a subject that was already famous throughout Europe as a symbol of Romanticism in French literature. Ernani was given its premiere in March 1844 with great success. The plot presents a serious treatment of the concepts of chivalry, honour, and heroic patriotism that Verdi always found inspiring with particular reference to Italy s struggle for independence from foreign rule and her aspirations to be a unified nation. The opera is full of attractive and memorable melodies that Verdi carefully assigned to his four main characters. To heighten the effect of the romantic drama, Verdi sought to balance the principal solo voices with powerful choral passages. The opera became extremely popular immediately after its highly successful first performance in Venice. It was regarded as a symbol of Italian patriotism and an icon of the spirit of Risorgimento, the nation s reawakening. A superb sound recording made at a series of live performances at La Scala Theatre of Milan will be played, with tenor Plácido Domingo in the title role, soprano Mirella Freni as his beloved Elvira, baritone Renato Bruson as King Carlos of Spain, and bass Nicolai Ghiaurov as Grand Duke de Silva. Riccardo Muti conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala, Milan. 28 January: Shostakovich s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk As the most important Soviet composer after Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich ( ) spent his entire creative life in Russia and experienced traumatic ups and downs in his continuous struggle with the official party-line in artistic ideology. By the time he graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 19, he was already recognised as a brilliant composer of great originality, and he continued to develop at a rapid pace, becoming internationally known as the best symphonist and chamber music composer of his generation. Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is the second of Shostakovich s two completed operas. The composer and Alexander Preys adapted the libretto from a short novel by Nicolai Leskov. The story centres around Katerina, who is married to the son of the wealthy merchant and landowner Izmailov, who catches her in bed with her lover Sergei. The adulterous couple murder the old man, but their crime is eventually discovered. In transit as a convict to Siberia, Katerina is taunted by Sergei s new mistress. She kills her rival and drowns together with her victim in the icy water of an unknown river. In the recording selected for your appreciation, soprano Maria Ewing interprets the role of Katerina. Her lover Sergei is portrayed by tenor Sergei Larin. Her father-in-law Izmailov is sung by bass-baritone Aage Haugland. Green Dolphin Street Saturdays 10:00pm Tim Wilson One of jazz music s most important sources of inspiration has been its ability to appropriate compositions originally intended for Broadway musicals or for Hollywood movies and give them new and almost perpetual life. These songs are known as standards or evergreens. Riding the Dolphin An evergreen that finds itself, with various treatments, in the repertory of a vast spectrum of jazz musicians is On Green Dolphin Street (pun intended). Written by Bronislaw Kaper with lyrics by Ned Washington, it was the theme song of the 1947 movie Green Dolphin Street. The appeal for jazz musicians lies in its ABAC form, the A s lending themselves to rhythms that contrast with the B and C sections. Chord progressions in the A parts feature a chromatic bass line that has an almost Spanish character. The 1947 recording by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with vocals by Bill Lawrence give the theme a lyrical treatment that is very much in the character of the movie and of the times. However, that is just a starting point. Our explorations will lead us through some of the great mainstream artists such as Mel Tormé and Ella Fitzgerald to the wilds of Eric Dolphy s bass clarinet and Paquito D Rivera s latin genius and as far afield as a unique arrangement by the Turtle Island String Quartet. Caravan Moves Belonging to the earliest jazz music to seize on the riches of Latin American music, the legendary Caravan was a collaboration between Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington. Ellington, working with the great bassist and creator Charles Mingus, produced a powerful solo piano version. Among others, the undeservedly little known vocalist Andy Bey provides us with a very striking version. The music s universal appeal has led to covers by groups as diverse as Fanfare Ciocărlia, who are legends of Gypsy brass and Tico Banjo Jazz Grass. Tony Bennett has a strong vocal approach to this song and Art Blakey s instrumental is a true tour de force. Don t forget the Caribbean Jazz Project! The Morning Sunrise The American musical theatre (i.e., Broadway) has been a great source of jazz repertory. Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise, written in 1928 by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II for the musical The New Moon, has been one of the most popular and long-lasting tunes we know. The simplicity of the chord changes invites the improvising musician to use his or her melodic imagination and this song is a frequent call at informal jam sessions. Michael Brecker demonstrates his magnificent creative ability in his live recording from Jazz Baltica in Helen Merrill brings a traditional approach while Dianne Reeves make her softly anything but. I only recently discovered the jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby. Her take on this tune is both sensitive and poetic while assimilating the jazz idiom to a very difficult instrument. John Scofield and Bireli Lagrene take the guitar in very different directions, the former into electric space and the latter into rhythmic vitality. A big surprise for me was discovering Zoot Sims sparkling use of the soprano saxophone a decade after Steve Lacy s youthful endeavors and another decade before John Coltrane made it widely acceptable again. Limitations and Freedom As you might now begin to understand, I am inviting you to share and understand the jazz creative process by presenting many facets of the same song and the same art. Imagine the jazz musician who faces the challenge of composing new music as he or she performs on a nightly basis. In my own music, I have often found that some kind of limitation can be a springboard for the imagination. For example: limiting myself to one scale during a whole chorus or, for that matter, a whole composition can drag out coherent ideas more effectively than the anything goes approach. I hope you can forgive me for the repetitive aspects of these programmes and can enjoy the spectrum of musical art they reveal. Another way of keeping same but different involves the way an artist s treatment of his or her own material evolves throughout their career. There are, for example, clear indications of the expansion of boundaries and the changes in audience tastes in Miles Davis original 1958 recording of Milestones and his later performances in 1964 and Even more vivid are the leaps of style between Herbie Hancocks first version of Watermelon Man and that of the album Head Hunters a decade later. Even more extreme, are his performances in his live concerts in Europe in the 80s and 90s. Of course, we don t need to rely on modern Jazz musicians alone. Following Count Basie s renditions of One O Clock Jump through almost half a century can be quite instructive. I hope you do enjoy the ride ON!!! 31 44 JANUARY 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 Livia Lin 凌崎偵 Angus Leung To me, hardware stores are like candy shops. I can literally spend hours and hours wandering through the aisles. It is one of my favourite shops to visit when I have free time. Ranging from tiny nails to massive generators, I find their variety of products fascinating, and the informative (sometimes even heated) conversations between experts in the store catch my attention, too. The dazzling line-up of the more than often non-eye-catching materials and tools is a feast for my eyes. Taking screws as an example, they can have different heads, different coatings, different lengths, and each of them is designed for use with different materials. Similarly, there are many types of paint for different surfaces, with different finishes such as matte, semi-gloss, and glossy. For amateurs like me, finding the right product can be a headache. Each has its pros and cons. Not only do I have to sort out which particular one suits my needs but also I have to take my personal preference as a factor. Luckily, I can always go to the staff for advice. These hardware gurus are always ready to answer my questions and their vast knowledge and experience always impress me. Recently, I have taken up a new position at Radio 4. It has opened up new horizons for me and I joyfully anticipate the upcoming challenges. As the old Chinese saying goes Sharp tools make good work, and so broadening my musical horizons is a life-long task for me as a musician. As a radio programme presenter, it is my wish to play different works for you in the enormous world of fine music. After all, despite diverse classifications by period, geographic region, or instrumentation, what we want to listen to is music that touches our heart and speaks to our mind. 五金舖, 對我來說是一個樂園! 閒時, 我總愛到這些店舖 打個白鴿轉 我愛他們的物品種類包羅萬有, 小至一口釘, 大至發電機, 都盡在其中 我也愛細聽行家滔滔不絕地分享他們的經驗與智慧 五金舖售賣的東西, 通常都是其貌不揚但非常實用的原材料和用具, 例如各式各樣的螺絲批 電線接頭 接合劑 門鉸等 雖然店內沒有吸引人的陳設, 不過店家總會將貨品分門別類擺放好, 而我每次步入這些店都會走到每個角落駐足看看 這些東西都是按不同需要衍生出來的, 行家的意見直接影響到產品的發展, 使它們得到改良 每一種螺絲 每一種接合劑, 適用於不同情況 行內人當然熟知其中的分別, 但對我來講, 面對令人花多眼亂的選擇, 最好還是請教一下經驗老到的師傅, 而他們也會耐心地滿足我的求知慾 古語有云 : 工欲善其事, 必先利其器 作為音樂人, 我當然渴望不斷拓闊自己對音樂的認識 不久之前, 我換了新的工作崗位, 未來也許會以不同形式在第四台跟大家分享音樂 希望我能夠將五花八門的古典美樂帶到大家耳邊, 讓你也感受到音樂為我帶來的感動 Understanding their individual characters is a delightful experience 慢慢地了解它們各自的特質是一種樂趣
