1 Published by America s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society San Diego, CA $8.00 Per Issue Summer (August) 2018 Vol. XXXVI No. 3 All-Star Swing Saturday Night at Festival 39 Bassist Michael Gamble is the organizer of Lindy Focus in Asheville, N.C. one of the major swing dance events in the world. His Rhythm Serenaders, with an all-star lineup, will perform during the Saturday Night Swing Extravaganza at the 2018 San Diego Jazz Fest. In addition to the leader, the Serenaders will include a number of performers whose names are familiar to swing dancers: Laura Windley, vocals; Corey Gemme, trumpet; Charlie Halloran, trombone; Nate Ketner and Joe Goldberg, reeds; Kris Tokarski, piano; Jonathan Stout, guitar; and Josh Collazo, drums. San Diego s own Mad Hat Hucksters will also play at the Extravaganza. The group s instrumentation is unusual: Morgan Day, leader/ washboard/vocals; Lindy Edwards and Nightshade Navarro, reeds; Mike Till, electric guitar; Anthony Marca, rhythm guitar; and Jeremy Eikam, bass. The Hucksters music shows the influences of Sidney Bechet, Lester Young and Charlie Christian, among others. The Swing Extravaganza kicks off in the Golden Ballroom of the Town & Country Resort at 2pm on Saturday, Nov. 24 and ends at 12:15am on continued on page 3 Changes in the Wind If you are staying at the Town & Country Hotel for this year s SDjazzfest you will notice a difference when you arrive to check in. The Registration Lobby and about 200 of the old 1950 s one and two-level Garden and Courtyard rooms at the front of the property will be gone. The much talked about renovation of the hotel property will start on Aug. 13th and will last approximately two years. Other parts of the property will be renovated in 2019 and 2020 to include the San Diego River along the north side of the parking lot. A much-needed facelift includes plans for an attractive river walk. Even with the loss of some Garden rooms, more than 700 rooms will remain at the Town & Country which is more than enough to suit the needs of the 2018 SDjazzfest. For this year, a temporary check-in will be located in the Atlas Foyer near badge sales which might be more convenient in some respects. Planned renovations will have no impact whatsoever on the music venues, the Royal Palm Tower, the Regency Tower or food outlets such as Charlie s, Terrace Café, and The Market (Sunshine Deli). If you prefer to stay in one of the remaining Garden & Courtyard rooms, now is the time to make reservations. Even with possible renovation difficulties, there is still no better place than the Town & Country Resort for our Festival. Watch for early registration Thanksgiving Buffet discount pricing soon to be announced. See you in November! 4 AFCDJS Welcomes Morgan Day Morgan Day, the newest member of the AFCDJS Board of Directors, got his introduction to jazz music through his grandparents who were jitterbugs in the 1940 s. Traditional jazz, big band and swing were all a part of his growing up. But, in elementary school, he played the viola, during middle school the alto sax, and in high school he was in the choir focusing on musical theater. The revival of swing in the 1990 s drew him to swing dancing so during college at UC Riverside he was active in a dance club, gave lessons, and was a DJ for swing events. When Morgan moved to San Diego in 2014 and started working as an PAGE 4 Environmental Engineer, his passion for swing and jazz continued. In San Diego, as well as while attending UC Riverside, swing dancing drew him to trad jazz festivals and he attended several in any given year including Redwood Coast, Sac Jazz Jubilee, Arizona Classic, Sweet and Hot, Orange County Classic, and San Diego. It was not long before Morgan started jazz jam seasons with his musical friends who were also interested in jazz. With his viola, sax and guitar background, he indicated the washboard was his logical instrument of choice. As he and his friends polished their licks, he formed SUMMER (AUGUST) 2018 his own band, The Mad Hat Hucksters which has played at the SD Jazz Fest as well as our Monthly Concerts at the Mississippi Room and the Balboa Park Twilight in the Park series. The band plays jazz with a focus on music for dancers. Morgan adds a new and younger perspective to our Board. He arrived at his first meeting with ideas and questions plus a readiness to get involved in the Festival and projects throughout the year. We look forward to his continued contributions to AFCDJS There is currently another vacancy on the AFCDJS Board. Anyone interested in serving should contact us at jazzinfo@sdjazzfest.org. 6 Upcoming Monthly Concert Series Jazz Jammers-Aug. 12 (2nd Sun.) John Contreras and his band of merry musicians have played at Fuddruckers in Grossmont Center in La Mesa for over 18 years. In addition, the band has performed in Balboa Park at the Twilight in the Park Concerts series (Aug. 1 this year), the AFCDJS monthly concerts, countless private parties, and, of course, the San Diego Jazz Fest. Listeners and dancers alike enjoy Jazz Jammers and its interpretation of trad jazz and swing classics. John is the reedman and, together with trombonist Lee Fugal, is one of the featured vocalists. Chuck Hkukari (trumpet), Jim Goodwin (banjo/guitar), Mike Whitehead (piano), Fred Allee (drums), and Stan Kling (tuba) complete the lineup. Be sure to hear them on Aug. 12 and don t forget your parasols and shout rags. Sue Palmer - Oct. 14 (2nd Sun.) Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing continue to attract enthusiastic crowds wherever they perform. The band plays blues, swing, boogie woogie and jazz standards at clubs, park concerts and events across San Diego and throughout California. Motel Swing is one of the most popular bands in the AFCDJS monthly concert series and at the SD Jazz Fest where they are an integral part of the Saturday night Swing Extravaganza. Their excellent mix of tempi and a strong beat help to make the band a favorite of dancers no matter what one s style may be. Led by the Queen of Boogie Woogie on piano, the other Motel Swingers are April West, trombone; Jonny Viau, tenor sax; Steve Wilcox, guitar; Pete Harrison, bass; Sharon Shufelt, drums; Deejha Marie and Sharifah, vocals. 7 Jazz Society Continues Education Emphasis Mission Bay Preservationists Trip to NOLA The Mission Bay High School Preservationists visited New Orleans to soak in the music and culture found only in the birthplace of jazz. This one-of-a-kind atmosphere inspired the current crop of Preservationists to outdo themselves with each and every performance they gave. This was the fourth time that Music Director Jean- Paul Balmat has led the MBHS Preservationists to New Orleans. On Friday, the Preservationists first performed at New Orleans jazz radio station WWOZ, where Mr. Balmat was interviewed by host Keith Hill on his radio show The Traditional Hour. The band then performed another set at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, where they were accompanied by renowned trumpeter Ashlin Parker, who expressed his admiration of the Preservationists musicianship. Mid-day on Friday, the Preservationists performed a private concert at the iconic Preservation Hall, an acoustic-only venue reserved for New Orleans jazz icons. After their performance, the band was treated to a special workshop during which the veteran musicians offered feedback and advice on improving their technique, style, and performance. Always share the stage and stay true to the melody. Follow the bass and the piano because they set the rhythm. Don t drown out the rest of the band no showing off. Later that afternoon, the band was invited to see a full performance by the Preservation Hall Band at Preservation Hall. What a tremendous first day of music in NOLA, fueled by culinary delights including gumbo, po-boys, crawfish, and beignets! On Saturday, the Preservationists practiced their busking skills by performing at a street corner in front of the French Market, where they were much appreciated and generously rewarded with cash tips by shoppers and passersby.this busking warmed the band up for their next performance at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Clearly inspired by mentoring from the previous day, the Preservationists played their hearts out to a packed house. After their performance, Mr. Balmat, grinning ear-to ear, noted, This is what happens when you spend some time in New Orleans. We ve only been here one day, but I can tell you they didn t play like this yesterday! After this amazing performance, Mr. Balmat led the band on a tour of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, where they learned more about the spirit of jazz and saw such treasures like Louis Armstrong s first cornet and Dizzy Gillespie s trumpet. Free live music abounds in The Big Easy, and on Sunday, the Preservationists went to the Orpheum Theater for yet another uplifting jazz concert. On their way to their final performance later that afternoon, they happened upon local NOLA legend, clarinetist and vocalist Doreen Ketchems while she was busking on Royal Street. This further inspired them as they performed their final set at Buffa s Restaurant in the French Quarter, where they were joined on stage by proprietor and singer Leslie Cooper, and by MBHS alum and pianist Ed Gabrielyan. Buffa s owner was thrilled and she invited the band to return next year. The trip had to come to an end, but NOLA provided wonderful memories as they returned to San Diego and prepared for their spring concerts at MBHS. Don t miss the Preservationists at the 2018 SD Jazz Fest over Thanksgiving weekend. 14 Mitchell... Continued from back page Henderson and Bessie Smith. Though Mitchell did not contribute any pyrotechnics to the Wanderers and Bootblacks, his ensemble playing was just right for both groups. The greatest recordings in Mitchell s career were made in three sessions between September and December, 1926 with Jelly Roll Morton s Red Hot Peppers. Morton chose his sidemen as carefully as he arranged the music. Once again, Kid Ory and Johnny St. Cyr were in the ensemble, together with Mitchell, Omer Simeon, John Lindsay and Andrew Hillaire. The Red Hot Peppers recordings showcase the creativity, inventiveness and above all the musicality of Morton and his associates. George Mitchell s AFCDJS PRESENTS FREE 2018 JAZZ WORKSHOPS (2nd Thurs. of month, 7-9 pm) Aug. 9 Sept. 13 Oct. 11 Nov. 8 Dec. (Dark) AFCDJS-sponsored workshops are held the second Thursday of every month (except December) from 7 to 9pm at the San Diego Musicians Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd., San Diego. Requirement: Desire to play Dixieland Jazz! Furnished: Drums, piano and a core group of instructors. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ALL AGES & TALENT LEVELS WELCOME! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (619) 297-JASS (5277) The personnel of many local bands who have appeared at our Festivals have been participants in the AFCDJS free Jazz Workshops. PAGE 14 solos, as well as his ensemble playing, are worth repeated listening. Whether playing a haunting, soulful lead ( Smokehouse Blues ), exciting breaks ( Black Bottom Stomp ) or hot mute work ( Doctor Jazz ), the horn playing is absolute perfection. Morton called upon Mitchell the following year for another Red Hot Peppers recording date. Though this particular session has not received the same critical response as the 1926 records, Mitchell s playing still adds much to the overall sound. Also in 1927, Mitchell recorded with Doc Cook s Orchestra (replacing Freddie Keppard) and in a Johnny Dodds-led group which also included trumpeter Natty Dominique. Mitchell and Dominique worked well together, and made a good team. Ordinarily, clarinetist Jimmie Noone used alto sax as the only other front line instrument, but in 1928 and 1929 he added Mitchell and trombonist Fayette Williams for three recording sessions. On these records, the cornetist did not have much to play besides the ensembles, but when he is audible Mitchell sounds good as always. Mitchell closed out the decade playing and recording with the sensational pianist Earl Hines. His fellow trumpeter in the Hines band was the sadly-underrated Shirley Clay. Both men are heard to good advantage on Good Little Bad Little You, Everybody Loves My Baby and especially Beau Koo Jack, where composer Alex Hill wrote out Louis Armstrong s trumpet solo (from Armstrong s own record of the song) for Mitchell and Clay to perform as a duet. Based upon his triumphs in the 1920s, it is reasonable to expect that George Mitchell would have been a welcome addition to any band or orchestra in Chicago during the 1930s. However, he decided to quit playing professionally and took a job as a bank messenger. Though he played briefly with a WPA band, SUMMER (AUGUST) 2018 Donating Stock to AFCDJS A gift of appreciated stock to AFCDJS is a wonderful way to limit the taxes you will owe the IRS while at the same time contributing to keeping the music alive. When you give appreciated stock to AFCDJS, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charity, you benefit because you receive a substantial tax deduction paying no taxes on the gains. AFCDJS benefits because your donation helps support your Society and fund some of your favorite bands and musicians at future SDjazzfests. Gifting either cash or stocks will provide you with a tax deduction, but a gift of appreciated stock provides you with both a tax deduction and the avoidance of all capital gains taxes. For example, if you bought 100 shares of Apple stock in 2008 for $2,000, it would be worth about $16,000 today. Giving the stock directly to AFCDJS instead of selling it and donating the cash is illustrated below (values are approximate). Both options result in the same support to AFCDJS, but giving the stock directly is far less expensive for you. And another consideration if you donate stock direct to AFCDJS, you avoid the capital gains tax even if you don t itemize. It s easy to transfer your appreciated stock to AFCDJS here s how. Instruct your broker to transfer the stock to the AFCDJS account at Wells Fargo Advisors account number Wells Fargo Advisors DTC number is The AFCDJS tax ID is Mitchell was through with playing music full-time. He passed away in Chicago on May 22, His recorded legacy is a treasure, and continues to inspire cornetists and trumpeters around the globe.

16 AMERICA S FINEST CITY DIXIELAND JAZZ SOCIETY Post Office Box San Diego, California NON PROFIT ORG. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Permit No. 821 San Diego. CA Traditional Jazz: A Quick Look George Mitchell Sweet and Hot Cornetist (This is the fifth mini-biography in a continuation of a series of biographies of great traditional jazz musicians. The series started with the March/April 1991 issue and was developed by Rambler founding publisher and Board Member, the late Len Levine.) By Hal Smith AFCDJS Artistic Advisor The City of Louisville, Kentucky cannot match New Orleans or Chicago in the number of hot Jazz musicians born there. However, one native attained legendary status in the company of some of New Orleans best Jazzmen... George Mitchell was born in Louisville on Mar. 8, He began trumpet lessons at age 12, and became a professional musician while still a teenager. After a few years of touring with minstrel shows, and other types of PAGE 16 engagements, Mitchell moved to Chicago in He worked with the legendary New Orleans pianist Tony Jackson in Chicago, but did not stay in the city for long. Between 1921 and 1922, Mitchell worked in Detroit, Milwaukee, and in his hometown of Louisville, but he returned to Chicago permanently in He worked with bands led by Doc Cook, Carroll Dickerson, Jimmie Noone and Lil Armstrong SUMMER (AUGUST) 2018 and in July, 1926 Mitchell recorded with the New Orleans Wanderers/ Bootblacks. This was basically Louis Armstrong s Hot Five minus Louis, with Kid Ory, Johnny Dodds, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Johnny St. Cyr and alto saxophonist Joe Clark added for a few sides. The repertoire consisted of originals by Louis and Lil, such as Gatemouth, Papa Dip, Perdido Street Blues, Flat Foot and I Can t Say all of which are still played by contemporary Traditional Jazz musicians.
