2 Welcome to the seventh Festival - a festival that promotes outstanding artists in historical venues. The festival runs from 21st - 30th September and celebrates an eclectic mix of great music. The festival kicks off at The Farmhouse - Lizzie Ball and friends perform music ranging from Bach to Bluegrass. James Pearson - Artistic Director of Ronnie Scott s - makes a welcome return performing Bachology with his legendary trio and as soloist in Gershwin s Rhapsody in Blue with the fabulous Callum Au Big Band. Bach also features in seven concerts including the complete Violin Partitas and Sonatas with virtuoso violinist, Thomas Bowes, and a concert given by the internationally renowned organist Kevin Bowyer at the Chapel of St. Augustine, Tonbridge School. Classic FM Artist, Craig Ogden, performs a guitar recital in Birling and Finnish flautist, Sami Junnonen performs Bach alongside the music of our time in the spectacular setting of St.Peter and St.Paul s, Trottiscliffe. We commemorate the First World War with concerts at Pilsdon Barn Chapel and The Control Tower, Kings Hill with works written during the conflict. The outstanding cellist Richard Harwood performs the cello suites of Max Reger at Malling Abbey. These rarely heard works are a fascinating, modern take on Bach. Richard Harwood is the soloist in Elgar s Cello Concerto in a concert alongside works by Vaughan Williams including The Lark Ascending. perform side-by-side with musicians from across Kent. The music of contemporary composers Alexander Goehr and Paul Patterson are programmed across the festival. Hundreds of primary school children will be involved in a project based around Roald Dahl s Revolting Rhymes. The concerts are the culmination of a groundbreaking education project engaging young people with creativity and performance. The concert includes a performance of Paul Patterson s Little Red Riding Hood. All Saints Church, Tudeley, with its Marc Chagall windows, will be the spectacular setting for a performance of Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time. James Pearson opens the concert with an improvisation and, with composer and clarinettist Mark Simpson, perform this iconic work which was written in a concentration camp. 4 6 7 Sunday 24th September Hall of Fame Favourites 7.00pm St.Mary s Church, West Malling, ME19 6NE Richard Harwood - Cello Tom Pigott-Smith - Violin Thomas Kemp - Conductor Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis Goehr - Broken Lute Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending Elgar - Cello Concerto in E, Op.85 perform works by Vaughan Williams, Elgar and Alexander Goehr including the Nation s favourite classics The Elgar Cello Concerto and Vaughan Williams s The Lark Ascending. This concert features professional musicians playing side-by-side with young musicians from across Kent and their teachers. Tickets: 15 Go Compose! 10am - 5pm St.Benedict s Centre, West Malling Abbey, ME19 6JX A chance for budding composers from across Kent to compose a piece mentored by leading composer, Simon Speare, and members of. Ten young musicians will write a piece in a day which will be performed and recorded in the wonderful setting of The Pilgrim Chapel at 4pm. This event is run in conjunction with Sound and Music - the National hub for new music. 6 10 11 Thursday 28th September Bach Pilgrimage VI Thomas Bowes - Violin Bach - Partita No.3 in E Major, BWV.1006 Bach - Partita No.2 in D Minor, BWV.1004 The final concert of the Bach Pilgrimage series completes a journey through some of the most outstanding instrumental music ever written. Bachology 7pm St.Mary s Church, West Malling, ME19 6NE James Pearson Trio James Pearson and his legendary trio perform jazz inspired by Bach s Two-Part Inventions. A highly entertaining evening with one of the great jazz musicians of our time. Tickets: 20 L Ascension 1.30pm Chapel of St. Augustine, Tonbridge School, TN9 1JP Kevin Bowyer - Organ Bach - Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV.582 Alexander Goehr - Chaconne, Op.34a Olivier Messiaen - L Ascension Kevin Bowyer performs on the spectacular organ of Tonbridge School including works by Olivier Messiaen and his pupil Alexander Goehr who plans to attend the recital. Quartet for the End of Time 7pm All Saints Church, Tudeley, TN11 0NZ Mark Simpson - Clarinet Thomas Kemp - Violin Adrian Bradbury - Cello Sophia Rahman - Piano Messiaen - Quartet for the End of Time Messiaen s Quartet for the End of Time was written and premiered in a concentration camp. This performance is in the atmospheric surroundings of All Saints Church, Tudeley with its Marc Chagall windows commissioned by the D Avigdor-Goldsmid family as a memorial to their daughter who died in a sailing accident. James Pearson opens the concert with an improvisation inspired by these special surroundings.

Music includes works by Bartok and Brahms.
