For further information, see Important! under Time Caibration Signa Reception and Radio-controed Atomic Timekeeping Precautions. Atimeter The watch s atimeter uses a pressure sensor to detect current air pressure, which is then used to estimate the current atitude based on ISA (Internationa Standard Atmosphere) preset vaues. You can specify a reference atitude, which the watch wi use to cacuate your current atitude based on the vaue you specify. Atimeter functions aso incude storage of measurement readings in memory. Important! This watch estimates atitude based on air pressure. This means that atitude readings for the same ocation may vary if air pressure changes. The semiconductor pressure sensor used by the watch for atitude readings is aso affected by temperature. When taking atitude readings, make sure the watch is not subjected to temperature changes. To avoid the effect of sudden temperature changes during readings, keep the watch on your wrist in direct contact with your skin. Do not rey upon this watch for atitude readings or perform button operations whie sky diving, hang giding, or paragiding, whie riding a gyrocopter, gider, or any other aircraft, or whie engaging in any other activity where there is the chance of sudden atitude changes. Do not use this watch for taking atitude readings in appications that demand professiona or industria eve precision. Remember that the air inside of a commercia aircraft is pressurized. ecause of this, the readings produced by this watch wi not match the atitude readings announced or indicated the fight crew. 3

4 Operation Guide 3147 How the Atimeter Measures Atitude The atimeter can measure atitude based on its own preset vaues, or a reference atitude specified by you. When you measure atitude based on preset vaues Data produced by the watch s barometric pressure sensor is converted to approximate atitude based on ISA (Internationa Standard Atmosphere) conversion vaues stored in watch memory. When you measure atitude using a reference atitude specified by you After you specify a reference atitude, the watch wi use that vaue to convert the current barometric pressure reading to atitude. When mountain cimbing, you can specify a reference vaue in accordance with a marker aong the way or atitude information from a map. After that, atitude readings produced A by the watch wi be more accurate than they 400 woud without a reference atitude. Dispaying Your Current Atitude You can use the procedure described in this section to dispay your current atitude. The dispayed barometric pressure vaue changes to xxxx hpa (or inhg) if a measured barometric pressure fas outside the range of 260 hpa to 1100 hpa (7.65 inhg to inhg). The barometric pressure vaue wi reappear as soon as the measured barometric pressure is within the aowabe range. Temperature is dispayed in units of 0.1 C (or 0.2 F). The dispayed temperature vaue changes to xxx C (or F) if a measured temperature fas outside the range of 10.0 C to 60.0 C (14.0 F to F). The temperature vaue wi reappear as soon as the measured temperature is within the aowabe range. In some areas, barometric pressure is expressed in miibars (mb) instead of hectopascas (hpa). It reay makes no difference, because 1hPa = 1mb. You can seect either hectopascas (hpa) or incheshg (inhg) as the dispay unit for the measured barometric pressure, and Cesius ( C) or Fahrenheit ( F) as the dispay unit for the measured temperature vaue. See To seect the temperature, barometric pressure, and atitude units. See arometer and Thermometer Precautions for important precautions. arometric Pressure Graph arometric pressure indicates changes in the atmosphere. y monitoring these changes you can predict the weather with reasonabe accuracy. This watch takes barometric pressure measurements automaticay every two hours (at the top of each even-numbered hour), regardess of its current mode. Measurement resuts are used to produce barometric pressure graph and barometric pressure change indicator readings. The barometric pressure graph shows readings of previous measurements for up to 24 hours. The horizonta axis of the graph represents time, with each dot standing for two hours. The rightmost dot represents the most recent reading. The vertica axis of the graph represents barometric pressure, with each dot standing for the reative difference between its reading and that of the dots next to it. ach dot represents 1hPa. The foowing shows how to interpret the data that appears on the barometric pressure graph. A rising graph generay means improving weather. A faing graph generay means deteriorating weather. Note that if there are sudden changes in weather or temperature, the graph ine of past measurements may run off the top or bottom of the dispay. Questions & Answers Question: How does the barometer work? Answer: arometric pressure indicates changes in the atmosphere, and by monitoring these changes you can predict the weather with reasonabe accuracy. Rising atmospheric pressure indicates good weather, whie faing pressure indicates deteriorating weather conditions. The barometric pressures that you see in the newspaper and on the TV weather report are measurements corrected to vaues measured at 0 m sea eve. Question: How does the atimeter work? Answer: Generay, air pressure and temperature decrease as atitude increases. This watch bases its atitude measurements on Internationa Standard Atmosphere (ISA) vaues stipuated by the Internationa Civi Aviation Organization (ICAO). These vaues define reationships between atitude, air pressure, and temperature. Absoute atitude expresses an absoute height above sea eve. Reative atitude expresses the difference between the height of two different paces. Height of buiding 130 m (reative atitude) Rooftop at an atitude of 230 m above sea eve (absoute atitude) Sea Leve Precautions Concerning Simutaneous Measurement of Atitude and Temperature Though you can perform atitude and temperature measurements at the same time, you shoud remember that each of these measurements requires different conditions for best resuts. With temperature measurement, it is best to remove the watch from your wrist in order to eiminate the effects of body heat. In the case of atitude measurement, on the other hand, it is better to eave the watch on your wrist, because doing so keeps the watch at a constant temperature, which contributes to more accurate atitude measurements. To give atitude measurement priority, eave the watch on your wrist or in any other ocation where the temperature of the watch is kept constant. To give temperature measurement priority, remove the watch from your wrist and aow it to hang freey from your bag or in another ocation where it is not exposed to direct sunight. Note that removing the watch from your wrist can affect pressure sensor readings momentariy. Power Suppy This watch is equipped with a soar ce and a specia rechargeabe battery (secondary battery) that is charged by the eectrica power produced by the soar ce. The iustration shown beow shows how you shoud position the watch for charging. xampe: Orient the watch so its face is Soar ce pointing at a ight source. The iustration shows how to position a watch with a resin band. Note that charging efficiency drops when any part of the soar ce is bocked by cothing, etc. You shoud try to keep the watch outside of your seeve as much as possibe. Charging is reduced significanty if the face is covered ony partiay. 8

This watch uses a specia rechargeabe battery to store power produced by the soar ce, so reguar battery repacement is not required. However, after very ong use, the rechargeabe battery may ose its abiity to achieve a fu charge. If you experience probems getting the specia rechargeabe battery to charge fuy, contact your deaer or CASIO distributor about having it repaced. Never try to remove or repace the watch s specia battery yoursef. Use of the wrong type of battery can damage the watch.
