1 July 2017 Volume 22 Issue 7 From My Side of the Desk Ashia Gustafson, Director Happy July! We are building a better world this summer with the Summer Reading Program. Stop by and check out the city that is slowly growing on the DVD shelves. As children signed up for the Summer Reading Program each received a plastic DVD or cassette case with the instructions to build/create/design a building of their choosing. They have gone above and beyond to create a truly unique city. Check it out today! The summer reading program is still going strong with lots of activities for all ages to enjoy. This month s Super- Special Wednesdays are: July 5 - Phil Baker will be entertaining us with great music. On July 12 children who have preregistered will be making Delicious Designs, and on July 19 we will have Jim Oliver entertain us with his puppet show Little Outhouse on the Prairie. Celebrate America s favorite pastime with Baseball s No-Hit Wonders, on Monday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. Dirk Lammers will chronicle baseball s most interesting no-hitters during the national pastime s storied history. Remember that starting this month you must have less than $5.00 in fines and fees on your library account to access the computer lab. You will notice that we have done some re-arranging in the multi-media section of the library. More information on this project can be found further in the newsletter. You will soon also see some interesting other additions to the multi-media section. Stay tuned for more information. Ashia s book recommendation: The Girl Who Drank the Moon, by Kelly Barnhill. Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian. Xan rescues the abandoned children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule--but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her--even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she s always known. 2 Page 2 Baseball No-Hit Wonders On Monday, July 17at 7 pm, author Dirk Lammers will talk about his book that chronicles baseball's most interesting no-hitters during the national pastime's storied history, starting with George Washington Bradley's 1876 no-hitter for the St. Louis Brown Stockings and culminating with no-nos thrown by such modern-day pitching greats as Nolan Ryan, Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum. This program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by: Summer Movie Series - Come enjoy a free movie and popcorn This month s movie is: Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them Thu., July 13 at 6:30 pm Baseball was, is and always will be to me the best game in the world. - Babe Ruth Explore a new era of the Wizarding World before Harry Potter. Something mysterious is leaving a path of destruction in the streets of 1926 New York, threatening to expose the wizarding community. Newt Scamander arrives in the city nearing the end of a global excursion to research and rescue magical creatures. When unsuspecting No-Maj Jacob Kowalski inadvertently lets some of Newt s beasts loose, a band of unlikely heroes must recover the missing beasts. Next month s movie will be Silence on Thu., Aug. 10 Adult Craft Night Adult craft night is held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Cooper Room. It is free and open to any adults who wish to participate. Crafts in July and August are: Ice Dying Party Tue., July 25 This evening we will host an ice dying party for everyone wanting to participate. We will supply the ice, dye, soda ash soak, and Synthrapol for setting the dye. You need to bring your own fabrics to dye and equipment: plastic container(s) with lid(s), something to hold your fabric in the container, empty cans to keep everything out of the melted ice. At the end of the evening you will take your pieces home to let the ice melt and then you will be able to rinse and wash your newly dyed fabric/clothes. If you haven't done this before, ask at the front desk for more information. Little Lark Sachets - Tue., August 29 This evening we will be learning how to make felt stuffed birds that can be used as sachets in drawers or closets. We will be cutting out, sewing and stuffing these little birds. These can be made as little gifts for special friends or relatives. Registration required.
3 Page 3 Library Book Club Tue., July 11 at 6:30 pm - Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf In Holt, Colorado, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades. Addie and Louis have long been living alone in empty houses, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with. As Addie and Louis come to know each other better, a beautiful story of second chances unfolds. A D U L T S August 8 - Kitchens of the Great Midwest by J. Ryan Stradal Non-Fiction Book Club Mon., July 24 at 7 pm - Prairie Son By Dennis Clausen Prairie Son is the true story of a boy who was adopted out of an orphanage in the early 1920s and raised on a Midwestern farm to be a worker for his adoptive family. Lloyd A. Clausen, the author s father, survived the Great Depression, drought years, and spirit-crushing poverty and eventually located his biological parents through a series of extraordinary coincidences. August 28 - Operation Mincemeat By Ben McIntyre Booked for Murder - Mystery Book Club that discusses an author s body of work rather than a specific title. Mon., July 3 - Noon - Mary Higgins Clark Mon., Aug. 7 - Five or fewer This month we read a book by new authors or authors who have written five or fewer books. Everyone gives a short review of the author they read. This way we get a chance to learn about some of the new authors. Mon., Sep Linda Castillo Books by these authors can be found in the library s collection. Library book discussion groups are open to anyone who wants to attend. This newsletter is published monthly by the staff of the Brookings Public Library. Build a Better World Challenge Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present. - Albert Camus If you require assistance, alternative formats, and/ or accessible locations consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act, please contact Shari Thornes, City ADA Coordinator, at at least 3 working days prior to any meeting held at the Library. Larson Grant - Nancy Swenson, Technology Services Librarian The Brookings Public Library was recently awarded a Larson Foundation grant for $20,812 to be used to upgrade wireless access in the library and to upgrade a number of computers and monitors in the computer lab. Upgrades to the wireless access system were completed in June, with existing access points replaced and new access points added to increase wireless reach. Patrons should now notice more reliable wireless access across more of the library! In the coming months, new computers will be purchased to replace older computers in the lab. A number of monitors will be replaced as well. Finally, laptops available to check out for use in the library will also be upgraded, providing patrons access to the latest technology. The Brookings Public Library would like to thank the Larson Foundation for this generous grant award!
5 Page 5 Just when I think I have learned the way to live, life changes. - Hugh Prather We wanted to let you know about all the changes happening at the library right now! In the past, the music CD collection was housed in the back and you d bring us the corresponding cards for the CDs you wanted to check out, similar to audiobooks and DVDs. We ve now moved the CDs so that they are out in the A/V collection, sorted by genre and then by the first 3 letters of the band name or artist s last name. In addition, we ve added a New Music Releases section on the west end of A/V. For these, you ll still bring us the card and we ll retrieve the CD from the back. Now it s even easier to see what s new! You ll also notice we added two more genres - Pop and Rap/R&B. We have started adding adult titles in Spanish to our collection! This section will be located near the beginning of the Mystery section. We are starting by adding some classic novels as well as current popular novels, and will continue to add to it. If you re looking for Spanish titles for younger readers, check out the existing collection in the juvenile section! As a library patron, you have access to e-books and e-audiobooks through Overdrive (also known as South Dakota Titles to Go). Overdrive has released a great new app called Libby to access these items. Libby is much easier to use than the previous Overdrive app, and includes some great new features, like the ability to add more than one library card to your account. Check the app store for Libby, by Overdrive Labs to download it, or stop into the library to pick up detailed instructions. You also have access to e-audiobooks and e-magazines through One-Click Digital and Zinio. These are provided by the same company, and they have now released one app to access both called RB Digital. Check the app store for RB Digital, or stop into the library to pick up detailed instructions. Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life. -Joseph Addison Brookings Summer Arts Festival - July 8-9 The Friends of the Library will again have their spin art booth at the Arts Festival, Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9. If you would like to volunteer to help, please sign up at the front desk of the library. While a total eclipse will be visible in parts of Nebraska, we will experience about 90% coverage of the sun by the moon in Brookings. In preparation for this event, Wednesday, August 9 at 3 pm in the library Cooper Room A, Judy Vondruska (SDSU Physics Dept.) will be discussing the nature of eclipses and how to safely observe them. Attendees will also be provided with ideas for constructing simple viewing devices in advance of the eclipse. Come learn about this coming event and learn how to take full advantage of it without doing harm to your eyes. More information can be found at:
