1 Crooked Billet/Hallowell Elementary School Summer Reading Program Reading is very important. We want each of you to become a super reader. Reading is an activity that you need to practice in order to become better at it, so please try to read at least 30 minutes each day during the summer. Record the number of minutes that you read each day in the correct box. Also, use the Summer reading log sheet to keep a record of the books that you have read. Your new teacher will collect those sheets in September. Reading is an adventure! It can lead you to many exciting and wonderful places! See where it can take you!

2 Summer Reading Program June, 2018 Dear Parents, Hatboro-Horsham School District Crooked Billet/Hallowell Elementary School 501 W. Moreland Avenue Horsham, PA This summer, we would like to continue the summer Reading program for our students. It is important that our children continue to read daily because research proves that children learn to read by reading. Summer is an excellent time for self-selected reading which is essential if the reading habit is going to develop. It is our hope that this program will reinforce your efforts in having your child read during the summer. We are asking that your child read at least 30 minutes a day. It is also acceptable for you to read to your child. At the end of each day, please have your child record the total number of minutes read in the correct box on the calendar sheet. Each child should also use the Summer Reading log sheet to keep a record of the book that he or she reads. If your child fills all the spaces on his or her log sheet, plain paper can be used. Mrs. Lindbloom, our school librarian, has compiled a list of the recommended books and authors (see attached). You may go to to find the summer reading packet as well as student recommended books for additional suggestions. This may be useful in helping your child choose an appropriate book. Children who return their calendar and log sheets to their teacher in September will be honored in a special way. We are not expecting to have every day filled in. (But that would be great!) We are aware that circumstances may prevent reading on some days. Our goal is to provide an added incentive for children to read. Thank you for your continued support. Happy reading! Sincerely, Kelli Sendel Principal Steve Glaize Principal

3 June 2018 Dear Parents: With summer vacation upon us, I have created a suggested reading list that I thought you could use to guide your child s summer reading. This is not an all-inclusive list. You may want to choose another book by the same author or from a different level. There may be a special book that you enjoyed reading as a child that you would like to recommend to your child. You may also check out for more summer reading suggestions and activities. Students going into fourth and fifth grades may want to select from the Reading Olympics list whether or not they plan to participate in that exciting event in spring I hope this list will help you in your choices. Have fun reading this summer! Sincerely, Lauraine Lindbloom, Librarian
