FIX A LEAK WEEK The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has declared a Fix a Leak Week a time for Americans to find and fix the leaks that contribute to the more than 200 gallons of water an average American family wastes each week to running toilets, dripping faucets and other household leaks. Common types of leaks found in the home include worn toilet flappers, and showerheads and in most cases, fixture replacement parts don t require a major investment. Some leaks can be fixed by tightening connections. A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month. Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak. Pinpoint that leak by checking for dripping faucets, showerheads & fixture connections. Check toilets for silent leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank, wait 15 minutes and see if color appears in the bowl before you flush. Leakey faucets can be fixed by checking faucet washers and gaskets for wear and replacing them if necessary. If you are replacing a faucet, look for the WaterSense label. This spring, check your outside spigots and/or water irrigation systems before using to make sure it was not damaged by frost or freezing. An irrigation system with a 1/32 nd of an inch in diameter (about the thickness of a dime) can waste about 6,300 gallons of water per month. If your garden hose leaks at the spigot, replace the nylon or rubber hose washer and ensure a tight connection to the spigot using pipe tape and a wrench DOG LICENSE DEADLINE: MARCH 31 A late fee of $5.00 is applied to the cost of a dog license if not paid by March 31, The 2013 Walworth County increase in dog licenses fees resulted in Darien to $10.00 for altered dog and $16.00 for unaltered. 3 DARIEN PUBLIC LIBRARY 47 Park Street Next Door to Darien Elementary School A PROGRAM FOR ADULTS AND TEENS April 2013 On Monday, April 29 th from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. Laura Zaraza, a representative from Stampin Up, will be offering a program at the Darien Library. Participants will have an opportunity to be creative and to make a decorated notecard box with handmade gift enclosure cards. The cost of this program will be $6.00, which will cover the cost of all supplies and a tutorial that can be taken home to guide you if you want to make more boxes/cards later. If you want to try your hand at paper crafts and to have an opportunity to be creative, please sign up at the circulation desk at the library. It ll be easy, and it ll be fun! We hope you ll come! ADULT PROGRAM Those of you who have enjoyed programs offered by Jenny Wehmeier, UW s Family Living Educator, in the past, will be happy to hear that she will be here on Thursday, May 9 th from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. to offer Whole Grain Goodness. There are a lot of products on the shelves labeled whole-grain, made with whole grain, enriched, and fortified. It isn t easy for consumers to make healthy choices when they are not always sure what these words are or what they mean. Jenny will give information, and provide her usual great samples. Cost of this program will be $2.00. Please stop in to the library to sign up for this program. DIGITAL MAGAZINES NEW AND EXCITING! The Darien Library now has the capabilities to offer digital magazines to its patrons. This service is being offered at this time in addition to the paper copies of magazines that have always been available for check out. Using Zinio, each patron has access to 100 magazines, and can set up his own account to view them online at any time. A handout is available at the library for any patrons who may be interested in our newest state-of-the-art service. DARIEN LIBRARY BOOK CLUB FOR ADULTS The next meeting of The Darien Library s book club for adults will be on Thursday, April 25 th. Our book selection for that meeting will be Have A Little Faith by Mitch Albom. If you d like to join our book club, please stop in at the library s circulation desk to pick up a book. Books that are read by the book club are provided by the library at no cost to our members. Come and join us! MOVIES IN VHS FORMAT BEING SOLD FOR 25 CENTS EACH The library has deleted all VHS movies from the library s collection, so we are selling all of our VHS movies for children and for adults for just 25 cents each. We invite you to come in to see if there might be some titles that you d like to own. There is a huge selection to choose from at this time. BOOK SALE WITH FEATURED AUTHORS Our ongoing in-library book sale will feature these authors this month: Danielle Steel, Nora Roberts, and Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bainand, who wrote the Murder She Wrote books. 6 Your 2013 Resolutions Many of you might have made a 2013 resolution, well how is it coming? Did anyone make a resolution to recycle more? Well it is never too late to start here are some ideas or make up of some of your own: 1. Recycle at least once every day if you are out doing errands and there is no place to recycle that empty plastic bottle or another recyclable item, carry it with you until you see a recycling container. 2. Buy more products with recyclable packaging. 3. Have the recyclable containers easier for each family member to find them in your home. If you do not have enough recyclable containers in your home; contact the Town Clerk to receive more. Town residents are eligible for three FREE blue recyclable containers. 4. Challenge yourself to a zero waste day. In other words, try to one day without throwing anything in the trash. Focus on reducing the waste you create, and reuse what you want to dispose. 5. Replace one disposable item you use with a reusable version. Some ideas would be a refillable water bottle, a travel mug for your coffee for which you purchased at a gas station or coffee shop, and of course a reusable shopping bag. Challenge yourself and try some of these ideas or come up with some of your own. Town Residents are qualified to use Landfill free of charge to take your garbage and recyclables to Mallard Ridge Landfill. Mallard Ridge is located on Highway 11 between Delavan and the corner of 11/14/89. Please be prepare to show proof of residence, you may show your driver license, light/heat bill or copy of your tax bill.
