Weekly Library News January 24, 2018 Chess (for all) at the Library Interested in playing or learning the game of Chess? Seek no further. The Milford Chess Club, which met formerly at the Senior Center, now meets on Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 5pm in the Library s Granite Room downstairs. All chess players (or those who would like to learn) from age five and up are welcome to come to the Chess Club. There are multiple chess sets available and teachers to help you learn to play. Tax Forms and Tax Appointments The Milford Library has received all the Tax Forms for both the Federal and Massachusetts Resident and Non-Resident returns. They are on the cart near the door. Tax appointments are still available for AARP Tax Assistance Program for 2018 Tax returns. Tax volunteers can assist senior citizens and low persons with preparation of both Federal Massachusetts tax returns. Some guidelines are necessary: No complicated tax returns permitted (no Rental Properties, stocks, bonds, etc.) Assistance is intended for senior citizens (including Circuit Breaker refunds) and low income persons. No high incomes will be assisted. There are only a few appointments still available in March. These can be made for an hour each beginning at 9:30am with the last appointments at 1:30pm. Please call X219 or come in to make your appointment now to avoid disappointment. Unisex Restrooms Wait no more! The Milford Town Library now has two Unisex Restrooms on the main floor instead of separate rooms for Men and Women. This should facilitate less wait time for restroom availability in the future. Downstairs restrooms remain gender segregated. Film Screening & Q/A Join Drew Scott on Thursday, February 7, at 7pm in the Milford Library s Granite Room for the screening of the move Fuel Your Health: All disease begins in the gut. And so does your health.
Drew Scott Pearlman is a filmmaker and functional medicine practitioner located in the Boston area. He has directed and produced three films in a series about food, health and longevity. Drew also works with clients privately to help them get to the root of dis-ease in their unique body. Join him for this FREE screening to learn more. For more information call ext.2. Alex Papasodero Art In February a collection of artwork by Alex Papasodero will be on exhibit behind and near the Information Desk. Display Case - Fabric Artist Fabric Artist Dawn Haupt will share her small sculptures, which incorporate fabric, natural and found objects in the Adult Display Case during February. Cookbook Club? Would you like to try new recipes and meet other cookbook enthusiasts? If so, read on The Milford Town Library is considering starting a Cookbook Club. The club s facilitator would select one cookbook each month and order sufficient copies for each member. Members would then each choose a recipe from the book, cook the dish and bring it to the next meeting for all to taste and enjoy. Interested? Call or Mary Frances at the library at X219 or mfbest@cwmars.org. The first meeting is scheduled for 6:30pm Wednesday, February 13, in the Quarry Room on the lower level of the Library. Center Book Group The Center Book Group will meet on Tuesday, February 19 th at 10am at the Milford Senior Center to discuss The Good Neighbor: The Life & Work of Fred Rogers by Maxwell King. Fred Rogers, of course, is the phenomenon who gave the world, Mister Rogers neighborhood which aired on public television from With his cardigan, sneakers, and gentle manner, Mister Rogers taught children about the world. Using puppets, he invited kids into the Land of Make Believe. As King skillfully shows, there was more to Fred Rogers and his legacy than the show which was satirized and mocked at times. Interviews, other writing by Rogers, and thoughtful analysis make for an impressive first full-length biography of the teacher/broadcaster. Newcomers are always welcome to come to these informal, but informative discussions. To reserve a copy of The Good Neighbor or for more information about the Center Book Group, call the Information Desk at , ext. 2. Page 2
Adaptations Book Group Join us on Wednesday, February 20, when the Adaptations Book Group meets at 6:30 in the Young Adult Room to discuss Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver. This debut novel, now also a movie, is smart, complex, and heartbreakingly beautiful. For popular high school senior Samantha Kingston, February 12 Cupid Day should be one big party, a day of valentines and roses and all the privileges that come with being at the top of the social pyramid. And it is.until she dies in a terrible accident that night. However, she still wakes up the next morning. In fact, Sam lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she ever imagined. Pick up a copy of Before I Fall at the Information Desk to read and enjoy before the discussion group meets. Contemporary Book Group The Contemporary Book group will meet on February 27, at 6pm in the Children s Program Room to discuss The Flight Attendant by Chris Bohjalian. This is Bohjalian s 20 th novel, and it s a high-flying thriller. Cassie, a flight attendant in her 30s, on her way to alcoholism, wakes up after a night of over-drinking to find a dead (murdered) man in the bed beside her. Things go from bad to worse for Cassie. She lies all the time, never admitting to knowing anything about the man or the murder. As she remembers more about the night before, it becomes apparent that there was a lot going on that she knew little about. Stay tuned. You ll stay up all night with this one. For more information about the Contemporary Book Group, please call Shelley at , ext. 2 or ssgammat@cwmars.org. There is a Slew of New Nonfiction and It is Good We will mix it up for you this week. If there isn t something that gladdens your day or brightens your heart in this mélange of delightful new publications well, we would be very surprised. There is some great stuff here. Starting with Phoebe Robinson s essay collection Everything s Trash But It s Okay. The inside flap copy says it s a collection on gender, race, dating, and the dumpster fire that is our world. That s all you re getting on this one, because when we flipped through it to get a sense of how best to recommend it, there was a Lost Time Incident. We could not afford another one at this juncture. And then we picked up Paperback Crush by Gabrielle Moss. We ve recommended Paperbacks From Hell by Grady Hendrix before (and are doing so again, here, under the radar. It s great! Also, his new novel is out, We Sold Our Souls, and that s great too), and idly wished at one point there were a similar title for 80s and 90s YA books. We hope we did not inadvertently sell our souls, because while flipping through Paperback Crush (subtitle: The Totally Radical History of 80s and 90s Teen Fiction), we realized our dreams had come true. Paperbacks from Hell and Paperback Crush share the same publisher, Quirk Books, and if you ever wondered just how much really good book design could affect your enjoyment of a title, pick up something by Quirk Books. Amazing. Do you remember Sweet Dreams Page 3
romances, or The Girls of Canby Hall? Or Sweet Valley High? Babysitters Club? Paperback Crush is a nostalgic guilty pleasure. You may be familiar with our reverence for the work of John Scalzi. The newest Scalzi on our shelves isn t a new title in the Old Man s War universe. It s a collection of essays from his blog, called Virtue Signaling and Other Heresies: Selected Writings From Whatever If you ve ever seen one of his tweets blow up, you know what this is about. If not, picking it up and reading any random page should do the trick. Even if you disagree with his sentiments, there s lots of food for thought here. Finally, we ve been handing around the Flower Color Guide by Darroch and Michael Putnam. It s so pretty. Lovely photographs of blooms against a white background. The flowers are, as the title implies, organized by color. Maybe you re planning a garden. Maybe you need a quiet moment and a selection of lavender blossoms. Either way. Sometimes a book is just neat. That s this one. Keeping Bad breath at bay January's Mayo Clinic Health Letter included helpful tips for freshening bad breath and for preventing it from happening: 1. Brush your teeth regularly, between meals if possible. Swishing with water will also help dislodge food particles 2. Cleaning your tongue--odor-causing bacteria can live on the tongue, especially toward the back. Many toothbrushes now have tongue scrapers. 3. Flossing daily--the dental mantra is a mantra for a reason. Flossing rids the month of food particles wedged in teeth. 4. Drinking enough water--saliva and water will also flush away other bacteria and particles that can cause bad breath. 5. Chewing sugarless gum--will move particles and provide instant freshening. 6. When using coffee, tobacco, or garlic--plan for these known stinkers so you aren't sharing the odors with others. 7. Bad breath that can't be helped with these tips may stem from another cause. Talk it over with your doctor. Blind Date Time! We had such a good time doing a Mystery!!! display that we decided to run a February datethemed display in honor of Valentine s Day. As a holiday, it has some rabid fans and some equally enthusiastic detractors. Know what doesn t have a ton of haters? Movie night. In February, we invite you to check out Blind Date With a Movie. Check the introductory nametags on the wrapped packages from the Round Table, and select the movie you think will furnish the right viewing experience for you. Take a chance on one of our picks. Or live on the wild side! Have a marathon! Try two or three! As always, if you partake of a selection, we d love your feedback. Like it? Hate it? Send your hot take to milfref@cwmars.org. Page 4
Children s Program Local Author Children are invited to a Storytime on Saturday, February 23, at 11:30am to meet local author Annie Cronin Romano as she reads from her book, Before You Sleep.
