1 Weekly Library News March 7, 2018 Library Chess Club Member Wins National Award Leo Marzoratti, age 11, and a member of the Milford Library s Chess Village, won the 4 th Spiegel Cup Qualifier in the first Booster under 400 Section held on March 3, Leo won four games to win 1 st Place. To enter the tournament, a person needs to be a member of United States Chess Federation (USCF) and the Massachusetts Chess Association (MACA), a state qualifying tournament, which allows him to play in the championship tournament. Chess Village meets at the library every Wednesday from 1-5pm. The club focuses on preparing members for participating in chess tournaments and learning the game of Chess. Everyone is welcome. Congratulations to Leo! Cookbook Club Wednesday A few cooking enthusiasts met for the first Cookbook Club meeting, and perused the chosen book: The Best Mexican Recipes, published by America s Test Kitchen. They are each picking a recipe from the book, cooking the dish and bringing it to the meeting on March 13 at 6:30 in the Quarry Room At the meeting on March 13, another cookbook will be offered. This will be Lidia s Commonsense Italian Cooking, by restauranteur and TV show star, Lidia Bastianich. I have eaten in Lidia s restaurant in Pittsburg, PA a year or two ago, and the meal was wonderful. Lidia has a lot of cookbooks out there. This is one that will be fun for a group to cook from and discuss. Stop by the Information Desk and ask about the group, and/or come to the meeting next month, try the dishes the members brought and pick up the next book. Interested? Call or Mary Frances at the library at X219 or mfbest@cwmars.org. The second meeting is scheduled for 6:30pm Wednesday, March 13, in the Quarry Room on the lower level of the Library. Cookbooks on Display Speaking of cookbooks, area resident Jean do Curral shares her eclectic collection of cookbooks in the Adult Display case during the month of March. Jean has also shared her vintage aprons for the display as well. Many of these cookbooks are privately published, one of a kind compilations by community and church groups. Some very special books are to found in this display.

2 A few of the older and most interesting cookbooks are those published by institutions no longer in existence. Here is Home Cookin by Milford Catholic Elementary School. The cover is the result of a contest by the school s children to design a cookbook cover and title. There are many familiar Milford names on the recipes. The Ellis Island Immigrant Cookbook is a real treasure. The author and compiler, Tim Bernardin, tells us in the introduction how he came to write the book. The recipes are divided by the country of origin. A tribute to our immigrant families and the food that has added so much to our culture. Our Daily Bread from Holy Rosary Parish in Minnesota contains many Scandinavian recipes. A Taste of St. Rocco s is a collection of recipes from St. Mary s Parish In Franklin. The St. Rocco celebration was famous for years, not only in Franklin, but many nearby communities. Alas, it is no maore. However, the Milford Fire Department is still alive and well. Their Cookin With Fire cookbook also contains many familiar Milford names. Not all the cookbooks on display are these unique spiral bound community types. There are also some unusual hardcover books. I ve never seen a copy of The Old Farmer s Almanac Everyday Cookbook before. And here is a copy of Pepperidge Farm s Easy Meals for Busy Days. Blue Ribbon Winners: America s Best State Farm Recipes looks intriguing, too. Stop by the Information Desk if you would like to examine one of these cookbooks. We can take it out of the case so you can have a closer look. And don t miss the aprons: one is on an easel near the Display Case, two more in the case. Dave Morin Photos: Setups and Surprises Local photographer Dave Morin returns to the library with an exhibit called Set-ups and Surprises. Some of these remarkable photos were planned and others just happened. Dave has exhibited here several times now to great acclaim from our patrons. Though they share talent in common, Dave is not related to the folks at Morin s Photography. Dave s exhibited several times now, and he always includes when and how the image was taken. This time he s included a striking mixture of nature, flowers, state parks and local events. Dave has taken photographs since childhood, but recently has become a serious photographer with the improvements In digital SLR cameras. He is mainly self-taught, and has participated in many seminars from camera club members and other professionals. The photos will be on exhibit behind the Information Desk throughout the month of March. Come see the Hummingbird Moth on a deep purple Butterfly Bush, the Rusty Milk Truck, the gorgeous dahlias at the Hudson Senior Center and many more. Dave s photos are always a treat to exhibit and to view. Don t miss them. Center Book Group The Center Book Group will meet on Tuesday, March 19 th at 10am at the Milford Senior Center to discuss Murder in the Marais by Cara Black. This novel is the first in a series featuring Franco-American detective Aimee Leduc. She is tasked with finding the murderer of a Jewish woman in the Marais area of Paris. Newcomers are always welcome to come to these informal, but informative discussions. Page 2

Adaptations Book Group Join us on Wednesday, March 20, when the Adaptations Book Group meets at 6:30 in the Young Adult Room to discuss Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, by Jesse Andrews.. This story of quirky friendship that must expand to include one more was made into a movie in It involves teens and movies and cancer, and it is nothing like The Fault in Our Stars. It is likely to be the funniest book about dying you ll ever read. Pick up a copy of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl at the Information Desk to read and enjoy before the discussion group meets. 2. Friends Program: Sam Ducharme Hiking the Appalachian Trail Join the Friends of the Milford Town Library on Wednesday March 20 at 6:30pm when they present Sam Ducharme Thru Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Sam set out on a modern day adventure a 2,180 mile, 14-state backpacking trip from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine. He will document the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the wildlife, the hardships encountered on the trail, as well as the people, culture and humanity at its finest. This 90 minute presentation takes us through trail towns, over the mountaintops and through the back country. The images and stories will leave you with a renewed awe of the beauty of our country. It will be a delight and one that has you wanting to hit the trail yourself. Don t miss it. Contemporary Book Group The Contemporary Book group will meet on March 27, at 6pm in the Children s Program Room to discuss Descent by Tim Johnston. This is novel has been reviewed as a literary thriller, since it is unlike most other thrillers. A teenage girl disappears during a family outing in Colorado. Not that different a plot. What is different is the way Johnston treats this tragedy. One reviewer said it affected her so intensely she had to put it down to compose her emotions. In March, we re moving on to pairs well with. Check out some of the duos we ve put together, and let us know which things you think harmonize Page 3

4 nicely. Examples include: a CD of Pavarotti with a delightful Italian cookbook. That s the idea. Come check it out. We re not sure we can spin these new nonfiction titles are pairing well with each other, but we think they do. Because any library book, honestly, pairs well with another library book. The more the merrier. This is all new, all great stuff, from different sections of the Dewey Decimal System. Food and More Food You know how you should never go to the grocery store when you re super-hungry? It s also not a good idea to talk about new books on an empty stomach. We have some mouth-watering new titles for you this week, and in the love it or hate it category, the first one is Cauliflower by Oz Telem. If we haven t lost you, then make sure to check this out. In addition to a stunning array of delicious-looking recipes with readily available ingredients and straightforward preparations, the pictures are gorgeous. This might be expected, as Telem is a food/cooking blogger and has developed an artful eye for appealing food, but the variety of recipes is unexpected. There are standards (roasted whole cauliflower and cauliflower wings, for example), but the entire section on Far Eastern cauliflower and oven-baked dishes is beyond wonderful. Vegetarians, vegans, and those who are gluten-sensitive this is for you. The foundational The Everyday Baker by Abigail Johnson Dodge was nominated for/won a number of awards. It s weighty and comprehensive and very attractive, and it is for those who seriously intend to improve their baking skills. It s ambitious and lovely, with helpful photographic sections illustrating tricky techniques. If you re looking for delicious recipes without the foundational underpinnings, try Jerrelle Guy s Black Girl Baking. Guy says right from the start she isn t classically trained, and is more about hitting the different sense notes of her recipes. This title is also incredibly visually appealing, features straightforward recipes, and is geared toward less classically oriented bakers in terms of ingredients as well as spirit. Vegans and vegetarians, especially those interested in getting started with less mainstream ingredients like aquafaba, will find this an encouraging and gorgeous option. Finally, we have a lovely choice for those of you who would rather let someone else do the cooking. Hamburger America by George Motz is a revised and expanded state-by-state guide to the best burgers in the nation. Trying at least a couple of these would only require a short day trip (there are two listed in Massachusetts), but our nearest neighbors, statewise, also look tantalizing. We are not sure why Wisconsin, Ohio, and Texas seem to be hotbeds of delicious burger activity, but we are looking forward to perusing these pages and adding some locales to our bucket list. Tax Forms and Tax Appointments The Milford Library has received all the Tax Forms for both the Federal and Massachusetts Resident and Non-Resident returns. They are on the cart near the door. All tax appointments are filled, and we are taking names on a Wait List. Interested persons may call the library to have their name placed on the Wait List and as cancellations arise, names will be called to fill slots in the order they were received. 5 Consumer Reports On Health has easy and practical tips for preventing falls which unfortunately are increasingly common as people age. Balance issues, diminished eyesight, and side effects from medication can up the risk of all too. Here s what you can do: Upgrade your bathroom add grab bars around tubs and toilets. A professional can make sure that are secure enough and at the best level for you. Use a rubber mat in the shower and a bathmat with a non-skid backing. Have lights at the top and bottoms of staircases and exterior entryways. Motion detected outside lights are best for hands free use. Clean floors with cleansers or homemade solutions of water/vinegar that won t leave a slippery film. Secure furniture and appliances that might tip over tvs, dressers, bookcases. Cut down on clutter keep clear footpaths and be careful with area rugs use ones that have a non-skid backing. Sturdy up the stairs both inside and outside. Think about a second rail or colored tape on the edge of each step for better visibility. Replace any cracked or wobbly outside steps. March Newsletter The Milford Town Library monthly newsletter has a new edition for the month of March. With items featuring displays, book groups, ESL classes and more. Pick up your copy of MTL at the Information or Circulation Desk. Winter ESL Classes FREE ESL Drop-in Classes have returned. These classes are for adults 16 years and older and NO pre-registration is required. Please note that childcare is NOT provided and children may not be left unattended in the library. Some adult students ask older siblings, relatives or friends to remain with young ones in the children s room during class so they are able to focus during class and allow others to focus as well. Beginners: Mondays 6-7 pm, Intermediate I: Tuesdays 7-8 pm, Intermediate II: Tuesdays 8-9 pm Reading: Wednesdays 6-7 pm, Grammar: Wednesdays 7-8 pm March class calendars can be found at the Circulation and Information Desks. Citizenship Classes Citizenship Classes, offered by Catholic Charities, will continue on Thursdays, from 6 to 8 pm beginning January 17 th after the holiday hiatus. Enrollment is open and rolling. 6 Ongoing Programs Food Pantry donations from the library have been greatly appreciated. Donations are delivered weekly by a staff member. Museum Passes are available to many area museums, zoos and attractions thanks to the Friends of the Library. Membership to the Friends of the MTL continues to be only $10 a year.
