1 Between the Stacks VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 SPRING 2005 New Bern-Craven County Public Library Celebrate National Library Week, April Between the Stacks is published quarterly by the New Bern- Craven County Public Library as a service to let you know what is your library. Inside this issue: Library Wins 2 NCLIVE Update 2 Audio Survey 3 Photography 3 Book Review 4 Pizza Poetry 4 Punch and Judy 5 Book Bingo 5 Calendar 6 The New Bern-Craven County Public Library invites you to join the celebration of National Library Week, April 10-16, as we demonstrate that the library truly offers something for everyone. A wide variety of programs are regularly offered for all ages including story-times for preschool and school aged children, computer classes for adults, book discussion groups, monthly art exhibits, and teen advisory board meetings for students. In addition, the library will host the following special events that are free and open to the public: Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale. The hours for the sale are Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. 5 p.m.; and Sunday, April 10, 2 p.m. 5 p.m. Persons in wheelchairs are invited to attend the Book Sale on Thursday, April 7, 12 noon 2 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 10 a.m. Get a Grip on Medicare Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) staff and volunteers will provide an overview of Medicare Part A and B, Medigap Supplemental Insurance and Health Care Planning. A question and answer session will conclude the program. Thursday, April 14, 4:00 p.m. Punch and Judy Puppeteers (see related story on page 5). Friday, April 15, 4:00 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Photography Workshop for Teens-(see related article on page 3) Saturday, April a.m. As-Needed Landscape and Lawn Maintenance Tom Glasgow, Craven County Cooperative Extension Director, will discuss some of the treatments that may actually be harming your lawn or shrubs such as over watering, excessive fertilization and unneces- sary pesticide spraying. Get some tips on how to have a good-looking yard with less effort on your part. Sunday April 17 3 p.m. North Carolina Lighthouses Lighthouse experts Cheryl Shelton Roberts, co-founder of the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society, and Bruce Roberts, former director of photography for Southern Living magazine will explore the history and lore of North Carolina lighthouses and lighthouse keepers. Copies of their latest book North Carolina Lighthouses: A Tribute of History and Hope will be available for purchase. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library. 2 PAGE 2 BETWEEN THE STACKS Library Wins National Grant The New Bern Craven County Public Library is one of two winners of the Book Wholesalers, Inc./Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Collection Development Grant, administered by YALSA, a division of the American Library Association (ALA). The grant of $1,000 is donated by Book Wholesalers, Inc. for collection development, and is given to YALSA members who represent a public library and who work directly with young adults ages Grant winners were announced at the ALA Midwinter Meeting, January in Boston. The grant will allow our teen advisory board, TRAIN (Teenage Readers Active In New Bern), to expand the young adult book collection. TRAIN members have already had a voice in selecting some young adult books. Titles that have been purchased include: the A-list series, the Louise Rennison books, and Snakecharm by Amelia Atwater- Rhodes. TRAIN would like to improve the young adult recreational reading choices by purchasing graphic novels and titles by core Young Adult authors. It will also allow us to expand our nonfiction collection. NC-LIVE Update We are pleased to announce that NC-LIVE ( a collection of online journals, magazines, and e- books available through the library, has recently added three new resources to the collection. Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL), a series of over 20 reference books, available in electronic format, with titles such as: "African American Almanac", "Encyclopedia of Food and Culture" and the "College Blue Book". The GVRL is searchable by keywords in the full-text. The CQ Researcher and CQ Weekly: CQ Researcher offers indepth analysis of current issues in the news. CQ Weekly has expert coverage of the U.S. Congress including status of bills, votes and amendments, floor and committee activity, and backroom maneuvering. NetLibrary: Updates to the e-book collection include over 1,300 updated information technology e- books. Sample titles are: "Windows XP in 10 Steps or Less" (2004) and "Windows XP for Power Users" (2004). The entire NetLibrary collection is composed of e-books that offer keyword search across the entire full-text contents. For more information, con- tact the library at As our gift to you in celebration of National Library Week, all patrons who visit the library from April may pick up a special coupon at the main check out desk. The coupon allows the user to return one overdue item between April 11 and October 16, 2005, and have the fine forgiven (up to a $5 maximum). Patrons with no overdue materials may redeem the coupon for a one-time rental of DVDs or videos (value not to exceed $5). Coupons are valid for only six months and are limited to one per customer.

3 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE 3 Results of Audio Book Survey We want to thank all those who took the time to participate in our Audio book on tape or CD survey. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of unabridged. As one responder said, Abridged books make book lovers sad. Whether or not CD s or Cassettes were preferred or most often used was about even. The category most often listened to is mysteries. A close second favorite is suspense. We will continue to expand our CD collection. You can check the availability of titles by a favorite author through our online catalog. You can also request titles from other libraries in our system. We no longer purchase abridged books on tape or CD. Our guest speaker, Wendy Rosen, will give a short presentation on the basic principles of photography. You ll get tips on picture composition and lighting. You re invited to enter Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) magazine s cover photo contest for teens. VOYA magazine is looking for photographs for the front cover on the theme of Teens on the Planet Read. Images should portray teens with any type of reading material taken anywhere on the Planet Read. If your photograph is chosen for the cover, you ll receive fifty dollars and three copies of that issue of VOYA magazine. Don t forget to bring your camera and any pictures you would like to have critiqued. You are also invited to join us for a photographic field trip to the historic district.

4 PAGE 4 BETWEEN THE STACKS Book Review Williams, Laura. The Mystery of the Bad Luck Curse (New York: Scholastic, 2001, 113 p.). Call Number: J WIL The Mystery of the Bad Luck Curse is actually two mysteries in one. The first mystery is about how the archaeologists find out if the settlers in Mystic Maine were really murdered in Mystery number two is about how a ghost suddenly appears. The cunning and daring kids in the book help solve both mysteries. I like the characters Jen and Zeke because they have an interesting life living in a lighthouse. The character I like best is Zeke because he is something like me. I like to do things the right way. For example, Zeke puts his socks in a laundry basket and his sister puts them under her bed. The writing makes me feel like I am really in the book. When the ghost suddenly appeared it made me roll off my bed! I truly enjoyed reading this book, but I don t want to give away too many details. 5 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 1 PAGE 5 May Programs and play Book Bingo Punch and Judy A free puppet show for young audiences will be presented by Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens through their Historical Art Outreach Program. The program, Punch and Judy: A Colonial Puppet Show, will be given on April 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. The show is set before the American Revolution, when Punch Noticias de la Biblioteca The Reference Department announces a newsletter for Spanishspeaking patrons entitled Noticias de la Biblioteca. This newsletter (published quarterly) will include: book reviews of Spanish titles in the Foreign Language collection and information on computer classes for Spanish- Registration for the young adult Summer Reading Program (open to students in grades 7 12) begins May 1, Book Bingo begins June 1, 2005 and bingo sheets will be available at the Reference Desk. Each bingo sheet has nine squares with one free book bingo space. Bingo squares have different literature genres. Participants read books to make a bingo. Each completed bingo is a raffle ticket. Participants can receive a new bingo sheet when they turn in their completed sheet at the Reference Desk. To be eligible for prizes, all bingo sheets must be turned in by July 31, Prizes include 2 tickets to Jungle Rapids in Wilmington, 2 tickets for dinner at Texas Steakhouse or 2 tickets to Southgate Cinema 6. meets Governor Tryon and other historical characters. Spring has arrived! With the warmer weather finally here many people are involved in springcleaning or enjoying time spent working in the yard. The New Bern-Craven County Public Library is sponsoring two special programs to help you with both projects. Join Debbie Statz of Wild Birds Unlimited on Saturday, May 7th at 10 a.m. as she discusses Attracting Birds to Your Backyard. Debbie will have helpful tips on birdhouses, food, and water requirements for various species found in our area. Come learn how to make your yard a haven for our feathered friends. Has your spring-cleaning project made you determined to deal with the pile of mending that s been sitting in your laundry room for the past two years? Ivy Reid, Craven County Cooperative Extension Agent, will offer suggestions on how to Organize Your Life on Tuesday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. Ivy will cover tips to help you get organized so you can save time and energy in every aspect of your life.
