Let s be clear. The United States has no official language. It was quite intentionally left out of the constitutional process by the founders. Despite this, there is a growing English Only movement in the U.S., which represents the white, Anglo supremacy in this country. To say that people must speak English is not an innocent statement rooted in a desire to have a functioning society as is often asserted by those who argue for English-Only legislation. Demanding, mandating, and forcing those who don t speak English to do so has been a tool of cultural genocide in an anti-immigration line in the United States for a very long time. While English-Only campaigns have targeted just about every non-english speaking group of immigrants in the history of the U.S., the current movement is largely targeted at Spanish-speaking Latino immigrants. As a result, the English-Only movement, as has often been the case in our history, is inextricably tied to racism against those who do not speak English (or don t speak it in the white vernacular that is prized by our dominant culture). It s time for us to change what it means when people say Speak American. Rather than an intolerant call for people to speak white, let s change our cultural reality so that Speak American implies that someone speaks multiple languages, enhancing our cultural landscape and furthering their own cognitive functioning in the process. 1. English as an international language About one hundred years ago many educated people learned and spoke French when they met people from other countries. Today most people speak English when they meet foreigners. It has become the new international language. There are more people who speak English as a second language than people who speak English as a first language. Why is this? There are many reasons why English has be- come so popular. One of them is that English has become the language of business. Another im- portant reason is that popular American culture (like movies, music, and McDonald s) has quickly spread throughout the world. It has brought its language with it. Is it good that English has spread to all parts of the world so quickly? I don t know. It s im- portant to have a language that the people of the earth have in common. Our world has become very global and we need to communicate with one another. On the other hand, English is a fair- ly complicated language to learn and it brings its culture with it. Do we really need that? Scientists have already tried to create an arti- ficial language that isn t too difficult and doesn t include any one group s culture. It is called Es- peranto. But it hasn t become popular. But may- be the popularity of English won t last that long either. Who knows? There are more people in the world who speak Chinese than any other lan- guage.
