1 Monday, October 26, 2015 QW: What is the difference between literary elements and literary devices? (give an example of each one) Take notes over literary elements vs. literary devices. We are looking at narrative writing and argumentation this quarter so you need to understand these. Literary Elements Refers to an aspect of a whole text Not characteristic of the author, but present throughout all works of literature Theme, conflict, setting, characters, point of view, etc Literary Devices (figurative language) Literary devices are techniques used by the author to convey ideas and emotions to the audience Unlike literary elements, they are not necessarily present in all works of literature Metaphors, similes, foreshadowing, etc (you already have a handout about these in your Writer s Notebook)

4 Monday, October 26, 2015 Seats 1-2: Pick up a copy of the poem Allegiance by Michael Fournier (use TWIST to analyze it) and annotate with your shoulder partner. Seats 3-4: Pick up a copy of the poem America For Me by Henry Van Dike - (use TWIST to analyze it) and annotate with your shoulder partner. Work with your face partner to complete a compare/contrast between the poems based on the four components of the rhetorical analysis (voice, audience, purpose, form). Team /class discussions how do these poems tie in with making good choices even in difficult situations? When finished, select which one that you feel a current soldier could connect with the most and write a short explanation defending your answer.

Each person - tape this justifications of war handout into your Writer s Notebook. READ (independently) about justifications of war. - Do you agree with it? Portions? At all? Write down your thoughts.

7 Tuesday, October 27, 2015 Watch / listen to the soldier poem Annotate the I am an American Soldier poem and write a rhetorical precis for it (individually). If you don t finish your rhetorical precis in class today, it will be homework (due Thursday at the beginning of class). I will have a sub tomorrow.
