All films are subject to this week-to-week decision-making process. We try to play all of our Main Attraction films as soon as possible. (For more info on the business of booking films and why some films play longer or sooner than others, visit our website.) When Will a Film s Run Start? After we decide on Monday (Tuesday at the latest) what new films will start on Friday, we immediately let you know on our website and on our hotline. We ll send you an message every Tuesday as to what is coming and going on Friday. (Sign up by ing us at comments@theater.org.) If there is a particular film that you don t want to miss, call our box office (215/ ext. 6), and leave your name and telephone number and the particular film that you want to see (on the answering machine is ok). We ll put that on our Film Call List, and then we ll call you on the right Monday and tell you that your film is starting that Friday. (Two requests: please leave a telephone number where you have an answering machine, and please don t request every film on the flyer.) And When Will a Film s Run End? This decision happens by the same process we decide on Monday which films will end on Thursday. Again, we immediately let you know on our website, on our hotline, and in our weekly messages. Make Sure That We Have Your Address We can keep you up-to-date on all our events and scheduling via our weekly notices. Visit our web site to sign up, and then stay plugged into our latest programming news. Special Programs Our Special Programs are scheduled for specific dates and times, which are listed in this PREVIEWS brochure. Check our website and hotline for any additions or changes. M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S Mrs. Henderson Presents Great Britain, Stephen Frears, 1 hr 43 min Lively and entertaining, Stephen Frears latest offering is a love note to the London Theater and an homage to Britain s World War II homefront experience. Judi Dench stars as a widow who buys an abandoned Soho Theater and turns it into a famous venue. MRS. HENDERSON is a rollicking mix of deft comedy and marvelous stage numbers which also features Bob Hoskins and Christopher Guest. The Squid and the Whale USA, Noah Baumbach, 1 hr 20 min Mining his own childhood in Brooklyn in the 1980 s, director Noah Baumbach has put together a funny and unsparing portrait of a family in turmoil. It focuses on a 16-year-old boy whose tumultuous adolescence is complicated by the collapse of his parents marriage. With an impressive script and fine performances from Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney, SQUID is superb independent filmmaking. Separate Lies Great Britain, Julian Fellowes, 1 hr 27 min In his directorial debut, Gosford Park screenwriter Julian Fellowes delivers this first-rate domestic drama. Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson are superb as a couple whose marriage is quietly collapsing, and Rupert Everett is equally convincing as an idling dilettante. SEPARATE LIES is an absorbing film that starts with a hit-and-run accident and then meticulously twists through an intelligent and complex plot. The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio USA, Jane Anderson, 1 hr, 39 min PRIZE WINNER stars Julianne Moore as Evelyn Ryan, the devoted mother of ten and a housewife extraordinaire of the 1950 s. With remarkable resourcefulness she finds her way to the profitable world of jingle contests. An inspiring story with a great sense of style and a fine cast including Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. Don t miss this overlooked gem. Brokeback Mountain USA, Ang Lee, 2 hr 14 min Ang Lee continues to surprise with this critically acclaimed and sensitive Western romance. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal give outstanding performances as two cowboys who fall in love in 1960 s Wyoming. The harshly beautiful landscape perfectly compliments this achingly sad tale of two people whose personal feelings can not be resolved during a lifetime of marriages, separations, joys and sorrows. Pride and Prejudice Great Britain, Joe Wright, 2 hr 7 min Not since Laurence Olivier s famous performance 65 years ago has Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice been adapted for the big screen. Joe Wright deftly directs this much loved story of British class and marriage, employing a range of rising and seasoned actors Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen in the leading roles, plus Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, and Judi Dench rounding out a stellar supporting cast.

3 M A I N A T T R A C T I O N S CINEMATHEQUE AUTUMN SERIES 05 SPECIAL PROGRAMS AT 3 THEATERS. The Theater, the Theater and the Film Institute have joined together to present special film programs. Together we will increase your opportunities to see classic and T H E AT E R D OY L E S T O W N unusual films on the big screen. Unlike our FILM MAIN INSTITUTE ATTRACTIONS, BRYN these offerings MAWR are at T Hfixed E Atimes T Eand R places A M(and B Lnot E R all offerings play at all locations), so check closely for details. The Memory of a Killer Belgium, Erik van Looy, 2 hr 3 min with subtitles Belgian director Erik Van Looy weaves a tangled web of crime and intrigue in this taut psychological crime thriller. Jan Decleir plays a hit man whose early signs of Alzheimer s begin to cloud his memory and judgment. With sharp production design and a nod to Memento, this is an exciting and wellmade film. The World s Fastest Indian New Zealand, Roger Donaldson, 2 hr 7 min Anthony Hopkins is charmingly unpredictable in this enjoyable film about an eccentric 72-year-old man who aspires to be the world s fastest motorcyclist. He travels from his native New Zealand to ride on Utah s Bonneville Salt Flats on his 1920 Indian motorcycle. A stellar cast provides a rich array of supporting characters in this high-spirited adventure. The White Countess Great Britain, James Ivory, 2 hr 10 min Set in Shanghai in the late 1930 s, THE WHITE COUNTESS is about a disillusioned former US diplomat and a refugee White Russian countess who has been reduced to a compromised life in the city s bars. This decadent life is set against the impending outbreak of WWII and the invasion of the city by the Japanese. The incredible cast features Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Lynn Redgrave and Vanessa Redgrave. : Nov 14 Mon 7:00 : Nov 17 Thu 7:00 Fact and Fiction A Film Forum with Jennifer Steinberg Documentary films once considered dry, boring, and unimaginative are suddenly the hottest tickets at the box office. What s happened? Join film scholar Jennifer Steinberg for a night of analysis and debate as we view clips of a collection of groundbreaking documentaries by maverick filmmakers that challenge our preconceptions. Interesting issues explored include re-enactments (Nanook of the North), arty staged shots and music (The Thin Blue Line), and the intrusive personality of the filmmaker. Program is approximately 2 hours. Bryn M: Nov 16 Wed 7:00 Osama hr 23 min - Afghanistan d: Siddiq Barmak, with subtitles In association with the Lower Merion Library s One Book One Lower Merion, and their reading of The Kite Runner, we present this screening of the superb Afghan film OSAMA. OSAMA is about a 12-year-old girl in Afghanistan during the reign of the Taliban. In a dangerous gamble, her fatherless family dresses her up as a boy, so that she can try to get work to support them. This was the first film made in post-taliban Afghanistan and it s beautifully filmed and superbly acted. : Nov 21 Mon 7:00 Bryn M: Nov 22 Tue 7:00 : Nov 23 Wed 7:00 Sherlock, Jr min USA b/w d: Buster Keaton 35 mm Buster Keaton directed and starred in this classic comedy about a movie projectionist who enters into the film he s projecting and becomes a great detective. This romp through the interchangeable worlds of fantasy and reality is a beautiful work of art as well as a hilarious slapstick comedy. We ll also show Keaton s great short COPS. The evening s films will be introduced and discussed by BMFI Director of Education, Andrew J. Douglas. : Nov 28 Mon 7:00 Bryn M: Nov 30 Wed 7:00 : Dec 1 Thu 7:00 Bryn M: Dec 1 Thu 9:00 : Dec 8 Thu 7:00 : Dec 5 Mon 7:00 Bryn M: Dec 7 Wed 7:00 A Good Woman Great Britain/Italy, Mike Barker, 1 hr 33 min In this visually beguiling and highly amusing adaptation of Oscar Wilde s Lady Windermere s Fan, Helen Hunt plays a Manhattan socialite who flees to Europe in search of a match that will restore her financial security. Reset in 1930 s Italy, things begin simply but soon become delightfully intertwined and comically complicated. Scarlett Johansson is excellent as Lady Windermere and Tom Wilkinson nearly steals the movie with his expat Tuppy. Thumbsucker USA, Michael Mills, 1 hr 36 min Justin is a teenager with many problems and eccentricities, the largest of which is that he still sucks his thumb. A far cry from the typical coming of age films, this excellent independent film resonates with surrealist style and emotional candor. The superb cast includes Vincent D Onofrio, Tilda Swinton, Keanu Reeves, Benjamin Bratt, Lou Taylor Pucci and Vince Vaughn. A History of Violence USA, David Cronenberg, 1 hr 38 min This visceral and intriguing film is about a seemingly normal family put to the test by a violent crime. They try to return to a normal middle-american existence, but their lives soon start to unravel. Director David Cronenberg continues to shock and amaze. The excellent cast includes Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt. W W W. C O U N T Y T H E A T E R. O R G Double Indemnity hr 47 min - USA - d: Billy Wilder Billy Wilder s caustic adaptation of the James M Cain novel is film noir at its best. Fred MacMurray is lured into a murder plot by the seductive Barbara Stanwyck. The only problem is that insurance adjuster Edward G Robinson thinks something doesn t smell quite right. This classic crackles with sharp dialogue and features sumptuous black and white cinematography. Movieoke MOVIEOKE is like karaoke, except that in MOVIEOKE you are the star in a movie! You speak an actor s lines while the movie is playing silently on the big screen behind you. You have a monitor with subtitles to prompt you. The movie sound is off, so you supply the dialog. Almost all DVDs have English subtitles, so either bring your own DVD, or choose from the ones we will provide. You can participate, or just come to watch. Or you and your friends can act in group scenes. Refreshments will be provided. Join us it s fun! Memento hr 53 min - USA - d: Christopher Nolan MEMENTO is a smart and intriguingly constructed neo-noir. Guy Pearce plays a man with short-term memory loss who tries to keep his life together while avenging his wife s murder. He s re-built his life out of index cards, photographs, tattoos, and obsessive habits. To top it off, the movie s narrative is played in reverse.
