4 4 Weekender Local chef creates spice kit By Alicia Belch PARTY PRICING! SCRANTON It s about that time of the year when we tend to feel restless. The holidays are over. Bleak winter skies hang above as the chilly winds work their way into our bones. If you re missing the heat and high energy of the summertime, local artisan chef Rebekah Gillette invites you to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul during the Spices by Rebekah Launch Party. From 3 to 6 p.m. next Saturday, Jan. 19, at Steamtown Hot Yoga in Scranton, foodies and health fanatics alike may delight in internationallythemed spice dishes and prize giveaways, preceded by a stress-relieving and beginner-friendly yoga class from 3 to 4 p.m. Gillette obtained her culinary arts degree from the former Baltimore International College, now a part of Stanford University, in But her passion for cooking and baking began when she was in kindergarten. Since then, she has solidified her vision for delicious, yet easy-toincorporate spices, all with the modern lifestyle in mind. By the time I graduated from culinary school, I had specialized in classic French cuisine. But classical cooking 30pk Cans $ TAX THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY coldcasebeverage.com MICHELOB ULTRa You Save $3.00 per Case off Our Everyday Low Price! 1712 Wyoming Ave. Exeter, PA BEER does not easily lend itself to convenience. Most people don t have time to cook on that level, said Gillette. What inspired this line of spices was accessibility and simplicity, the desire to create a cooking product that becomes a gift of nourishment, rather than an involved, intimidating activity. This spice line provides an opportunity for cooking to be fun and rewarding despite time constraints. Gillette is the former owner and operator of Be Life Café in Clarks Summit, which was the area s first farm-to-table restaurant. From her experience teaching and preparing food for local customers, she learned what it takes to not only run a business, but to have a personal investment in the lives and health of the community. Customer Walter Casper, an attorney and single father of four, has been able to get creative in the kitchen and transition into a healthier lifestyle because of the Spices by Rebekah kit. It s easy, it s delicious. Anyone can use these spices in their kitchen. It s turned my whole world around in terms of actually enjoying my food and having fun while cooking for my children, Casper said. Over the past four years, Gillette has worked to perfect each individual spice in the kit, taking inspiration from dishes and flavors all over the world. Originally, the kit contained six different spices. I felt uneasy, however. I realized that I was rushing. There were flavor gaps. I asked myself Do I want to do this or do I want to this right? So, I added four more spices to really kick up the heat. Once complete with 10 spices, I felt the OLD MILL PINE YOUR OLD FASHIONED HARDWARE STORE SALES AND SERvIcE: Bring in your Snow Blowers for Tune Up & Repair Bicycles Kerosene Heaters Chain Saws Lawn Mowers Leaf Blowers Gift Certificates Available 400 Exeter Ave. West Pittston, Pa Alicia Belch Weekender Rebekah Gillette of Spices by Rebekah and her daughter, Bella, stand beside the Carbondale Technology Transfer Center s packaging machine. kit to be more representative in terms of palate and cooking style, said Gillette. 6 6 Weekender WB thrash band Cruel Bomb pledges to dominate 2019 By Patrick Kernan com WILKES-BARRE They only got together a few months ago, but Wilkes-Barre-based thrash metal band Cruel Bomb has their sights set on underground stardom. The three-piece outfit is made up of Brandon Gilvary on guitar and vocals, Kennie Barto on bass and vocals, and Kyle McKeown on drums. The band has a simple but big goal: in an sent to a Weekender reporter, they said they re looking to bring the hardest and fastest thrash metal to the world. The band s members say they owe a lot to the early days of thrash metal, with each member echoing a similar story of being raised on the likes of Metallica and Anthrax. According to the members, one of the appeals of music like this is how rabid the fan base is. When you re into metal, you have to be passionate about it, Gilvary said. You have to go out and find things to listen to. If it can t be played on the radio, it s probably pretty good, Barto added with a laugh. 7 Scranton country musician releases first album By Patrick Kernan com SCRANTON With the release of his first album, a country musician from Scranton is already thinking of what the next step is. Steve Mushal, 26, recently released his first full-length record, titled Through the Years: Volume 1, in late According to Mushal, the record s title perfectly describes how the music was written. This album was all Spice From page 4 of Spices by Rebekah and descriptions can be found on the official website, which is set to launch with the party on Jan. 19. What I am most excited for during the launch party is to enjoy the company of some of my favorite people and to watch this product take root, to see how the ease, options and fun of it all affects others, Gillette said. Currently, she is finishing up the packaging and labeling of the Spices by Rebekah kit at the Carbondale Technology Transfer Center, where she and her daughter, Bella, have full access to the technology and machinery needed to complete such a task. Bella has been an integral part of this endeavor. She has been my rock by helping me exponentially old stuff, from a young age to as recently as 2016, Mushal said, explaining that he first began writing lyrics when he was 11 or 12. But Mushal said that his venture into musicwriting has been more recent, saying he only picked up a guitar after moving to Williamsburg, Va., being taught the guitar by a blues guitarist he knew. Once he had the basics down, he said he felt it was time to make some form of an album. Mushal said that, throughout each process involved from accounting to packing to cooking with me in the kitchen, said Gillette. 8 big Dan s movie corner By Dan Stokes Interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch may be the future 8 Weekender Netflix s Bird Box has taken the world by storm since its debut Dec. 13. The film that has since created social media memes, video reenactments and everyone gushing over Sandra Bullock has gotten mixed reviews. But Netflix also dropped a hidden gem Dec. 28 without much fanfare. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, written by British screenwriter Charlie Booker, the creator of the hit science fiction series Black Mirror on Netflix, took his talents to new heights creating this psychological thriller that required viewer interaction. Interactive films might be the future, and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was the perfect testing point for a more serious film. Netflix has tinkered with interactive films in the children s genre, which makes total sense, but this film had the possibility for things to go horribly wrong. The film set in England in the year 1984 (shout-out to the famous George Orwell novel) focuses on young programmer Stefan (Fionn Whitehead) who questions free will as he tries to adapt a dark fantasy novel into a video game. Before you read any further, we must warn you there are spoilers ahead. With trillions of decision combinations facing viewers, there are five main endings with a rumored secret ending. When starting the film, I wondered what type of decisions I would be tasked with making and how I would come to those decisions. Would I click the right option the whole way through? Would I go to the left? Would I mix and match? At first, the decisions seem easy: What cereal do I want to eat? What cassette do I want to listen to? But the decisions progressively weigh on you as you find yourself choosing what seems like the lesser of two evils as Stefan completely unwinds and goes down a dark path in his quest to understand free will. Stefan is a deeply flawed character. He feels responsible for his mother s death. When he was a young boy, he couldn t find his stuffed rabbit, thus making his mother late for her train that derailed and killed her. As a result, he has a severely strained relationship with his father (Craig Parkinson) and barely speaks to his therapist. Always being watched In a flashback, dream or just weird instance, I admit I kind of got lost for a moment. The viewer sees Stefan s mother and father arguing over his stuffed rabbit, and how it s not masculine and is considered a doll. It seems to be screenwriter Booker s way of taking a shot at traditional gender roles and stereotypes. It turns out that Stefan s father takes the rabbit and gets rid of or hides it. (In my ending, I don t know what happens to it.) So in that scenario, it really wasn t Stefan s fault for his mother s death. But his guilt is so prevalent throughout the entire film. In the movie, Bandersnatch is a book that belonged to his mother that he s since transformed into a video game. He finally has the chance to make his dream a reality when fictional company Tuckersoft wants to create his game. He s introduced to one of his idols, Colin (Will Poulter), who I argue helps send Stefan even farther down into his bizarre abyss. Colin, in an ecstasy-induced train of thought, reaffirms his beliefs to Stefan on how people are always watching (Big Brother) and how decisions are pre-determined, including the government s possible influence. These are all relevant issues that still exist today. Based on the decisions I made by selecting all options on the right for the first half of the film and choosing the left option for the second half, I came to the ending where Stefan heads to prison for killing his father before he completes Bandersnatch. The credits roll while he s in his jail cell watching how he got there due to the implications of his actions. Overall, I m excited to re-watch the film so I can choose different outcomes to see the alternate endings. Based on the outcome I received, I was thrown for a loop and completely blindsided despite my choices for Stefan. I think that s what made this a truly great film. You really cannot anticipate the ending, despite making all the biggest decisions for the main character. Tip: Be prepared to give the film your undivided attention because you only have 10 seconds to make a choice. If you don t choose, the movie will select an option for you. There are also hidden Easter eggs throughout the movie with nods to Black Mirror episodes. I give Black Mirror: Bandersnatch a 3.5 out of 5 on the Stokes Star Rating System. Follow Dan Stokes on ByDanStokes Dans rating: 3.5 stokes
9 golden globes Mamma Mia! Rhapsody upsets Star Is Born at Globes By Jake Coyle AP Film Writer NEW YORK Thunder bolt and lightning rocked the 76th Golden Globes where a string of upsets culminated with the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody winning best picture, drama, over another movie about musicians: Bradley Cooper s much more heavily favored A Star Is Born. A Star Is Born came into Sunday s ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, as the presumed heavyweight and Oscar favorite. But Cooper s remake went home with just one award, for the song Shallow. Instead, the night s final two awards went to Bohemian Rhapsody the popular but poorly reviewed drama about Queen s frontman, a movie that wrapped after jettisoning its director, Bryan Singer and best actor-winner Rami Malek for his full-bodied, prosthetic teeth-aided performance as Mercury. Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime, said Malek. This is for you, gorgeous. Few nominees were considered more of a sure thing than Lady Gaga as best actress in a drama. But Glenn Close pulled off the shocker in that category, too, for her performance in The Wife, as the spouse of a Nobel Prize-winning author. Met with a standing ovation, Close said she was thinking of her mother, who really sublimated herself to my father her whole life. We have to find personal fulfillment. We have to follow our dreams, said Close, drawing still louder cheers from women in the crowd. We have to say I can do that and I should be allowed to do that. It s Close s second Globe in 14 nods. She s never won an Oscar. A year after Oprah Winfrey s fiery anti- Donald Trump speech at the Globes, politics were largely absent from the ceremony before Christian Bale took the stage for winning best actor in a musical or comedy for his lead performance in Adam McKay s Vice. He thanked the antichrist. What do you think? Mitch McConnell next? joked the Welsh-born actor, referring to the Senate s majority leader. Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for this role. Co-hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg opened the Globes, put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, on a note of congeniality, including a mock roast of attendees and a string of jokes that playfully critiqued Hollywood. Oh performed an impression of a sexist caveman film Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP From left, Viggo Mortensen, Peter Farrelly, Linda Cardellini and Mahershala Ali, winner of the award for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture for Green Book, pose in the press room with the award for best motion picture, musical or comedy for Green Book at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif. executive who casts like the title of Damien Chazelle s Neil Armstrong drama: First man! Noting the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Oh alluded to films with white stars in Asian roles like Ghost in the Shell and Aloha, the latter of which prompted Emma Stone, who starred in Aloha, to shout out I m sorry! from the crowd. But Oh, who later also won for her performance on the BBC America drama series Killing Eve, closed their opening monologue on a serious note explaining why she was hosting. I wanted to be here to look out at this audience and witness this moment of change, said Oh, tearing up and gazing at minority nominees in attendance. Right now, this moment is real. Trust me, this is real. Because I see you. And I see you. All of these faces of change. And now, so will everyone else. Some of those faces Oh alluded to won. Mahershala Ali, whom the foreign press association overlooked for his Oscarwinning performance in Moonlight, won best supporting actor for Green Book. While the Globes, decided by 88 voting members of the HFPA, have little relation to the Academy Awards, they can supply some awards-season momentum when it matters most. Oscar nomination voting begins Monday. Arguably the biggest boost went to Green Book, Peter Farrelly s interracial road trip through the early 60s Deep South, which has struggled to catch on at the box office while coming under harsh criticism for relying on racial tropes. It won best film, comedy or musical, and best screenplay. If Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga can find common ground, we all can, said Farrelly, the director best known for broader comedies like There s Something About Mary. The year s biggest domestic box-office hit, Black Panther, went unrewarded, though See globes 15 9 Weekender

13 Globes From page 9 presenters Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong o and Danai Gurira took a moment, in unison, for a shout of Wakanda Forever! As expected, Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt won best song for the signature tune from A Star Is Born. At the time, it seemed like just the first of a handful of awards for A Star Is Born. Can I just say that as a woman in music, it s really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and as songwriter and these three incredible men, they lifted me up, Gaga said. Though the Globes are put on by foreign journalists, they don t including foreign language films in their two best picture categories (for drama and musical/comedy). That left Netflix s Oscar hopeful, Alfonso Cuaron s memory-drenched masterwork Roma out of the top category. Cuaron still won best director and the Mexican-born filmmaker s movie won best foreign language film. This film would not have been possible without the specific colors that made me who I am, said Cuaron. Gracias, familia. Gracias, Mexico. Netflix also won numerous awards for the series The Kominsky Method, which won both best actor in a comedy series for Michael Douglas (he dedicated the honor to this 102-year-old father, Kirk Douglas) and for best comedy series over favored nominees like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (whose star, Rachel Brosnahan still won) and Barry. Netflix, Netflix, Netflix, said series creator Chuck Lorre. Olivia Colman, expected to be Lady Gaga s stiffest competition when the two presumably go head-to-head at the Oscars though Close may now make it a three-way race won best actress in a comedy/musical for her Queen Anne in the royal romp The Favourite. I ate constantly throughout the film, said Colman. It was brilliant. Best supporting actress in a motion picture went to the Oscar front-runner Regina King for her matriarch of Barry Jenkins James Baldwin adaptation If Beale Street Could Talk. In her acceptance speech, King spoke about the Time s Up movement and vowed that the movie crews of everything she produces in the next two years will be half women. She challenged others to do likewise. Stand with us in solidarity and do the same, said King, who was also nominated for the TV series Seven Seconds. A year after the Globes were awash in a sea of black and #MeToo discussion replaced fashion chatter, the red carpet largely returned to more typical colors and conversation. Some attendees wore ribbons that read TIME- SUPx2, to highlight the second year of the gender equality campaign that last year organized the Globes black-clad demonstration. Alyssa Milano, the actress who was integral in making #MeToo go viral, said on the red carpet that in the past year a really wonderful sisterhood has formed. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won for best animated film. Ryan Murphy s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story won for both best limited series and Darren Criss lead performance. For its sixth and final season, FX s The Americans took best drama series over shows like Amazon s conspiracy thriller Homecoming and Oh s own Killing Eve. Richard Madden, the breakout star of the terrorism suspense series Bodyguard, won best actor in a drama series. Ben Wishaw took best supporting actor in a limited series for A Very English Scandal. The press association typically likes having first crack at series that weren t eligible for the prior Emmys. They did this year with not just The Kominsky Method and Bodyguard but also the Showtime prison drama Escape at Dannemora. Its star, Patricia Arquette, won for best actress in a limited series. Last year s show, like a lot of recent awards shows, saw ratings decline. Meyers-hosted broadcast, an 11-percent decline in viewership. This year, Globes broadcaster NBC has one thing in its favor: an NFL lead in. NBC aired the late afternoon nailbiter between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles, likely delivering the network a huge audience. Jeff Bridges received the Globes honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award. In remarks about everything from Michael Cimino to Buckminster Fuller and, A of course, to his Big Lebowski character the Dude, Bridges compared his life to a great game of tag. We ve all been tagged, said Bridges. We re alive. He ended by tagging everyone watching. We can turn this ship in the way we want to go, man, said Bridges. A similar television achievement award was also launched this year, dubbed the Carol Burnett Award. Its first honoree was Burnett, herself. I m kind of really gobsmacked by this, said Burnett.
