Sometimes the Main Hall is used for other functions or events such as films, performances or life classes which can prevent visitors looking around. It shows the highs and lows of living with mental health issues. The set of four gouache paintings and four Dibond limited edition prints form part of the Arts Council of Wales funded research project Air, Wind & Fire. 7 Tuesday 15 November Mawrth 15 Tachwedd 6.15pm 3hrs with intervals ROH Opera Live: Les Contes D Hoffman, The Fantastical Tales of a Hopelessly Romantic Poe Friday 18 November Gwener 18 Tachwedd 1-3pm 2hrs Lit Soc: Ric Hool Between So Many Words Introduced by Fiona Owen and led by Ric Hool. This workshop will discuss themes that might inform our poetic writing and consider the determination or 'push' of authorship and the apprehension of readership. The opera is based on the fantastical tales of the German Romantic writer and composer E T A Hoffmann. Starring the sensational Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo as Hoffmann, the story explores the dishevelled reality of his life and the elegant, successfulin-love poet of his dreams. Doomed to fail in love but succeed in art, the opera is told across three acts with three different love stories; the black comedy of adoring a mechanical doll, the sensuous menace of a materialistic courtesan, to the tragedy of true love. Transporting audiences from the visually alluring world of Paris to the hedonism of Venice, the costumes and ravishing sets make this production a cinematic feast for the eyes. The Royal Welsh College Big Band, led by Teddy Smith and joined by guest director/soloist Steve Waterman, present some of the greatest big band compositions from ten decades, including music by Bix Beiderbecke, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Gil Evans and Kenny Wheeler. 10 Friday 25 November Gwener 25 Tachwedd 7.30pm 2hrs Life With The Signora A reminiscence in word and song about Maria Callas written and directed by Jamie-Glyn Bale With Anne Williams-King as Maria Callas Marian Bryfdir as Bruna Lupoli Maria Callas - La Divina - the most famous singer in the world sacrificed her career and ultimately her life for a man who used and then rejected her. Her life from rapid rise to international stardom to a lonely death in Paris are recalled by Bruna Lupoli, her maid for 18 years. Some of the great operatic arias associated with Maria Callas are performed live by international soprano Anne Williams-King accompanied by Marian Bryfdir as Bruna. They have currently 50 members and are well supported by their conductor Mari Lloyd Pritchard and pianist Olwen Jones. With Tchaikovsky s mesmerizing score, a Christmas tree that magically grows, a battle between toy soldiers and an Army of Mice led by The Mouse King, and the famous role of the Sugar Plum Fairy danced by Royal Ballet Principal Lauren Cuthbertson with her Prince, Principal dancer Federico Bonelli, this event presented by Darcey Bussell is not to be missed. Peter Wright s enchanting production tells the story of Clara, danced by Royal Ballet Principal Francesca Hayward, whose Christmas is transformed by a visit from Drosselmeyer, a mysterious magician and maker of magical toys. Modernist and particularly feminist readers of her work have insisted on replacing them, claiming that the spaces they provide, what one critic calls their 'hesitancies', are crucial to our apprehension of the mind of this remarkable and reclusive poet. Karen Anker s one act plays have been performed in UK, America and Australia and one has recently been made into a short film by director Ben Mole. Karen has taught Creative Writing classes for the WEA and is a co-founder of Cybi Poets. Fiona Owen, director of the Lit Soc invites everyone to a post workshop optional read-around on the theme of Christmas, over tea and mince-pies from the café, so leave an extra hour for us to celebrate in this seasonal Lit Soc way and do bring something along to read! 5, 4 concessions/ gostyngiadau Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter s No Man's Land, broadcast live to us from Wyndham s Theatre, London. Hirst and Spooner, two aging writers, meet in a Hampstead pub one summer s evening and as the evening wears on continue their drinking into the night at Hirst's nearby rather grand home. As they become increasingly inebriated, so too their stories become more incredulous. The plot becomes further complicated when two young men played by Owen Teale (Game of Thrones, Hollow Crown, Under Milk Wood BBC 2014) and Damien Molony (Being Human, Ripper Street) arrive at the house. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a sail appears on the horizon, he reaches out across the ocean to the ship that carries the men who wronged him.
