4 AOT THE COMOSER John Mackey (orn 197) holds a Master o Music degree rom The Juilliard School and a achelor o ine Arts degree rom the Cleveland Institute o Music, here he studied ith John Corigliano and Donald Er, resectively His orks have een erormed at the Sydney Oera House; the rooklyn Academy o Music; Carnegie Hall; the Kennedy Center; Ne York s City Center; eill Recital Hall; Jaco's illo Dance estival; Italy's Soleto estival; Alice Tully Hall; the Joyce Theater; Dance Theater orksho; and throughout Italy, Chile, Jaan, Colomia, Austria, razil, Germany, England, Australia, Ne Zealand, and the nited States His music has een choreograhed y a diverse grou o artists rom David arsons to Doug Varone, and or organizations rom the Alvin Ailey Dance Comany to the S Olymic Synchronized Sim Team (The team on the ronze medal - erorming to Mackey's music - at the Athens Olymics in 00) In eruary 00, the rooklyn hilharmonic remiered Mr Mackey s ork Redline Tango at the AM Oera House, ith Kristjan Jarvi conducting The Dallas Symhony, under Andre Litton, erormed the iece in oth Dallas and Vail in 00 Mr Litton erormed the ork again in 005, this time ith the Minnesota Orchestra, and Marin Also erormed the ork at the Carillo estival o Contemorary Music in the summer o 005 Additional erormances are scheduled y the ergen hilharmonic o Noray Mr Mackey made a ne version o the ork or ind ensemle in Mackey's irst ork or inds -- and that version has since received nearly 100 erormances orldide The ind version on the 00 alter eeler Memorial Comosition rize, and in 005, the AA/Ostald Aard rom the American andmasters Association Mr Mackey has received numerous commissions rom the arsons Dance Comany, as ell as commissions rom the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Ne York City allet s Choreograhic Institute, the Dallas Theater Center, the Alvin Ailey Dance Comany, the Ne York Youth Symhony, Ailey, the Vail Valley Music estival, the Juilliard School s Dance Division and ercussion Ensemle, Concert Artists Guild, eridance Ensemle, and Jeanne Ruddy Dance, among many others Recent commissions include "Turine," commissioned y the Southeastern Conerence and Directors Association, and "Strange Humors," commissioned y the American andmasters Association Mr Mackey s ork has een recognized ith numerous grants and aards rom organizations including ASCA (Concert Music Aards,1999 through 005; Morton Gould Young Comoser Aard, 00 and 00), the American Music Center (Margaret Jory airanks Coying Assistance Grant, 000, 00), and the Mary lagler Cary Charitale Trust (Live Music or Dance commissioning grants, 1998, 1999, and 000) He as a CalArts/Alert Aard nominee in 000 In 00-00, Mr Mackey as selected as a Meet-The-Comoser/American Symhony Orchestra League Music Alive! Comoser In Residence, a osition he held during the season ith the Seattle Youth Symhony Orchestra Mr Mackey served as Music Director o the arsons Dance Comany rom John Mackey currently resides in Los Angeles He encourages you to visit his esite to learn more aout his music: ostimusiccom ROGRAM NOTE "Turning" as commissioned y a consortium led y my high school riend, Josh Thomson, ho is no a high school and director in the Chicago area The overriding idea hen riting the iece as to convey "strong" eauty as ell as loss, rather than traditional "retty" lyricism I chose the title "Turning" or this iece ecause the ord can mean any numer o things, all o hich might e heard in the iece itsel It could reer to the turning o a massive, rehistoric lanet, as the irst signs o lie egin to ule u rom cracks in the ground It could reer to the turning o leaves in the all, a eautiul - ut melancholy - thing to see Or, in the iece's darkest moments, the title could reer to the turning o a knie into one's chest
