On erary 6th, 1963, my arents rehearsed the rahms Dole Concerto ith the Doctor s Symhony Orchestra in Los Angeles. It as to e the irst time that my ather, elix, a violinist, and his ie, Eleanor, a cellist, old lay this ork in lic. There as a great deal o anticiation or this erormance, as the to ere regarded as art o the elite o the Hollyood msical estalishment. I as 19 years old and not sre hat I as going to do ith the rest o my lie as ar as a career as concerned. Attending the rehearsal seemed a chore, t I sa that everyone there as mesmerized y the air s incredile ay ith this iece. We all kne that the concert old e an evening to treasre. Alas, the erormance never took lace, as my dad died to nights later, at the age o 7. The resect he as shon as evident in the memorial service held to days later, hen 1,500 eole shoed to ay their resects, inclding rank Sinatra. I really never had adeqate time to morn, and so it seemed right or me to comose this rie elegy as a trite to oth my arents. My ather old have trned 100 this Decemer and my mom old have een 98. The iece is scored or metal ercssion instrments, to hars, celeste, iano, or horns and strings. There are also o-stage instrments inclding a lgelhorn, trmet, violin and cello. The chord sonded at the oening is comrised o notes taken rom the melody o the slo movement o the rahms concerto. The lgelhorn intones the elegy itsel, olloed y a steady ild in the other instrments. This leads to a short and ast interlde, once again sing the irst or notes o the Dole Concerto s slo movement. Varios nsal sond eects interrt. Ater this rst o activity, the elegy melody retrns, this time transormed into a canon. As the textres thicken, the or-note moti ecomes agitated and reetitive, ith lrries o sond coming rom almost all the instrments. To conclde, hen the activity dies don, a distant violin and cello lay the irst e assages o the second movement o the rahms, t do not comlete their hrases, a reminder that the lic never heard my arents interretation o the iece. The last tterance o the to soloists tilizes the inal ars o the Andante, ith a rie silence occrring jst eore a dark ell-like sond in the orchestra rings the ork to an end. Kinah is the Here ord or Elegy, and althogh e ere not a devot amily, there as alays something o or Jeish heritage elt in the Slatkin hosehold.
