11 SEMINARS Seminars in Ethnomusicology and Sound Studies Co-convenors: Jason Stanyek and Noel Lobley Thursdays 5-6:30pm, Ertegun House (37A St Giles) Free admission Open to all Hilary term Thursday 23 January (1st week) Rachel Mundy Department of, University of Pittsburgh Songs on the DissectingTable: Ethnomusicology and the German Laboratory Tradition A reader scanning music journals from the 1920s and 30s discovers the recurrence of a gruesome metaphor, one that compares snatches of melody to the broken body of a vivisected laboratory animal. This talk explores the role of the German physiological laboratory in early ethnomusicology, tracing the empirical tradition that tied together physical bodies and musical ones. Mundy argues that visual traditions of knowledge in the laboratory framed music as a body that could be cut into and examined. Moving from the inscriptions of nineteenth-century laboratory instruments to the scratches of the stylus in early wax cylinders, she shows how laboratory traditions instrumentalized this approach. But while this musical laboratory legitimized the study of non-western music, it also imposed an impossible conflict between acquiring greater knowledge about foreign cultures, and expressing greater sympathy for them. Thursday 30 January (2nd week) Maria Mendonça Departments of andanthropology, Kenyon College inwomen's Prisons in England In recent years, it has been increasingly acknowledged that participation in music and other arts forms can have an important role in the process of rehabilitation in prison. Evidence suggests that involvement in music projects can provide hard-toreach prisoners - many of whom have experienced different forms of social exclusion - with positive affective experiences, which can act as catalysts, stimulating important changes in behaviour, involvement in other prison activities and other forms of education, and thereby contributing to breaking the cycle of reoffending. In her talk, Maria will draw on her current research into music provision in women's prisons in England, discussing the range and impact of this work, how music is situated in the public discourse of rehabilitation, and the challenges of music ethnography in the public sector. Trinity term Thursday 8 May (2nd week) Lisa Shaw Department of Cultures, Languages andarea Studies, University of Liverpool Carmen Miranda's al Performances in Brazilian and Hollywood Films ( ) This talk will consider the performance style of singer Carmen Miranda ( ) in her film roles in Brazil and the USA. Already a famous radio performer and recording artist, her film career in Brazil was closely bound up with the musical styles associated with Rio de Janeiro's carnival in the 1930s, especially the Afro-Brazilian samba. Before leaving for the USA in 1939, she appropriated the ethnically loaded persona of the 'baiana', polemically adopting the costume of Afro-Brazilian female street vendors of the colonial era.this talk will examine how she adapted this screen persona for her Hollywood screen roles, 'whitening' the 'baiana', and will analyse her performance style in the corresponding musical numbers. Thursday 22 May (4th week) Veit Erlmann Professor of Ethnomusicology andanthropology, University oftexas ataustin The Acoustic-Unconscious: Recovering Marshall McLuhan Marshall McLuhan is considered to be a founding figure of sound studies, but he is also (in)famous for his techno-determinism, Orientalism and, most importantly, oral/literate dichotomy. By contrast, his concept of acoustic space is often overlooked. Erlmann argues that it is time to revisit McLuhan s contribution to early sound studies and to examine the place of acoustic space in his theory of media. In so doing he hopes to broaden the current debate about sound on the edge or the unsound to what Erlmann calls the acoustic-unconscious. 20 S E M I N A R S I N E T H N O M U S I C O L O G Y A N D S O U N D S T U D I E S S E M I N A R S I N E T H N O M U S I C O L O G Y A N D S O U N D S T U D I E S 21

12 SEMINARS Balzan workshop-conference SEMINARS Seminars in Medieval and Renaissance The Balzan Programme in ology Towards a Global History of Friday 30 & Saturday 31 May (5th week) Denis Arnold Hall Faculty of WORKSHOP-CONFERENCE Eighteenth-century global music concepts Convenors: David Irving (School of, Australian National University, Canberra) Estelle Joubert (Department of, Dalhousie University, Halifax) This workshop explores how notions of cultural alterity and universalism, emerging from global processes of colonialism and exchange, impacted on the development of musical thought in early modern Europe. As Western Europeans were increasingly exposed to a whole world of musical styles, key thinkers asked how and why the meaning of music differed between cultures, and whether these meanings could be conveyed across cultural boundaries.
