1 andango Richard Byrd andango is based on a traditional andango a lively Spanish or ortuguese couples dance in triple meter typically based on the recurring descending chord progression i VII VI V The couples dance is relected in the spirited interplay among the brass parts that immediately ollow the emotive rubato introduction andango is adapted rom an earlier work by the composer entitled Canción del áaro or Trumpet and iano The solo, published by Eighth Note ublications (Catalog No ST1275), was originally written in a simpler orm as a commission by the Morton Middle School to eature the composer s son, but rewritten or publication as a more daring trumpet solo with piano accompaniment andango mirrors the modiied version with challenging technical passages and lorid ornamentation equally dispersed throughout all the brass instruments The exciting build up to the climax is immediately ollowed by a short notated cadenza, allowing advanced perormers the option to improvise an extended ad-lib cadenza This work is un to perorm, enoyable to hear, and is ideal or competitions and engaging concert programs REVIEW ONLY Dr Richard Byrd is Associate roessor o Theory and Composition at Eastern Kentucky niversity and trumpeter with the EK aculty Brass Quintet Ater receiving his Bachelor s degree in trumpet perormance at Deauw niversity, Byrd earned his Master and hd degrees in music theory rom the niversity o Kentucky Various organizations have commissioned Byrd to compose or arrange music speciically or their group or special event including the Kentucky Governor s School or the Arts, the Great American Brass Band estival, Commonwealth Clarinet Quartet, Eastern Kentucky niversity aculty Brass Quintet and several school band programs As a trumpet perormer, Byrd s classical experiences include perorming with the Indianapolis Symphony, West Virginia, and Lexington hilharmonic Orchestras During his tenure with the Lexington Brass Band he was a eatured soloist during the band s England tour in 2000 Byrd has perormed with several prominent azz artists including Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Maynard erguson, ens Lindemann, Byron Stripling, Louie Bellson, Bob Mintzer, Victor Wooten, Take 6, and the Manhattan Transer, and in shows with Aretha ranklin, Robert Goulet, Rosemary Clooney, Lou Rawls, Carol Channing, and the Ringling Brothers Circus His trumpet abilities with the DiMartino/Osland azz Orchestra are showcased on their CDs entitled Quotient and O the Charts, and with The Kentucky azz Repertory Orchestra on their CD entitled lying Home Byrd has also recorded his own solo CD entitled ortrait o a Trumpet, which is available at cdbabycom Byrd has been an artist-in-residence with the Kentucky Governor s School or the Arts since 1989, and has served as Chair or the Instrumental Music discipline, and Dean o aculty Byrd has written several articles or publication in the International Trumpet Guild ournal, the Kentucky Music Teacher ournal, and Bluegrass Music News He can be contacted at richbyrd@ekuedu ISBN: CATALOG NMBER: BQ192 COST: $1500 DRATION: 2:0 DIICLTY RATING:Medium-Diicult Brass Quintet wwwenpmusiccom
