1 Wondrous Love antasy Variations Joel Treyig The hymn tune or Wondrous Love is generally attriuted to the 1701 English song "The Ballad o Captain Kidd", although the tune actually predates this usage y many years. The text and melody or Wondrous Love ere irst pulished together as a hymn in The Southern Harmony, a ook o shape note hymns compiled y William Walker. The present composition is ased on the 111 Denson Sacred Harp pulication o the hymn. In this setting, the hymn is sung in the Dorian mode, and the haunting melody contains neither major nor minor thirds. This distinctly American setting utilizes strong harmonies rooted in the olk tradition and intentionally allos parallelisms (i.e.: parallel ths, parallel octaves, etc.) ithin the partriting that are considered to e incorrect in other settings. Written or lugelhorn/piccolo trumpet and organ, Wondrous Love antasy Variations goes through seven contrasting sections ased on the tune, including several cadenzas or the lugelhorn/piccolo trumpet player and an interlude or the organist. His perormances o contemporary music have earned the praise o such American composers as John Cheetham, Eric Eazen, Stanley riedman, Stephen Michael Gryc, Karel Husa, Kent Kennan, Anthony Plog, Joan Toer, and Luigi Zaninelli. He received his Doctor o Musical Arts in perormance rom the niversity o Texas at Austin, his Master o Music in perormance rom the niversity o Akron and his Bachelor o Music Education rom Baldin-Wallace Conservatory o Music and has also completed postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College o Music. His primary teachers include Raymond Crisara (NBC Symphony, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), James Darling (Cleveland Orchestra), Murray Greig (English Northern Philharmonia, Oreo Trumpet Consort), Scott Johnston (Akron Symphony, Canton Symphony, Paragon Brass Quintet) and Mary Squire (Ohio Chamer Orchestra).
