There is some thought that this tye o dance got its name rom the Sanish ord or eacock. Suosedly the movements o the dance resembled the mannerisms o the bird. The title o this ork indicates that the iece is reminiscent o those comosed several centuries ago, rather than the more modern avan such as Ravel's avane our Une Inante Deunte. avana Antiqua strives or an "ancient" sound through several techniques. irst is the drone that aears throughout most o the ork. This is accomlished by riting oen iths or dierent combinations o instruments. The result allos or some interesting harmonies. The second technique is the use o modes, the recursor to our modern scales. He attended the University o Western Ontario and graduated ith a degree in Theory and Comosition. Mr. Smallman has ritten or a ide variety o grous, ranging rom solo instruments to ull orchestra and covering a range o styles. This variety o styles has led eole to comare his music to such comosers as Bach, Mozart, Ravel, Mahler, oulenc, Ibert and Shostakovich. In 1991 Mr. Smallman as a inalist in the Search or Ne Music cometition hosted by the Canadian Band Association. The ork he submitted as his concert band iece Sirit o Adventure hich is also available through Eighth Note ublications. Mr. Smallman has been commissioned to rite many orks. The numerous ieces he has ritten or schools, churches and individuals include orks or concert band, solo lute, clarinet choir, saxohone quartet and over 20 ieces or various size choirs. Currently, Mr. Smallman is an organist and choir director at St. Martin-in-the-ields Anglican Church in Southestern Ontario here he has held that osition or 12 years.
