With Move, Bryan ros up his fifth Country Airpay No. 1 from Ki the Lights, his fifth fu-ength. It foows Huntin, Fishin and Lovin Every Day, which topped the chart dated Juy 2; Home Aone Tonight, featuring Karen Fairchid (two weeks at No. 1, beginning Feb. 13); Strip It Down (two, beginning Oct. 31, 2015); and Kick the Dust Up (Aug. 15, 2015). Bryan first accompished the quintupe feat with his LP Crash My Party, which generated five Country Airpay eaders in : the tite track (three weeks), Drink a Beer (two), Pay It Again (four), Roer Coaster and I See You (two). Each successfu new artist has its champions of the airwaves, and foowing are the outiers who took the risks at country radio that ed to breakthroughs this past year of stars ike Maren Morris, Od Dominion and Coe Swinde. These 20 programmers are identified by country abe executives surveyed by Biboard as among the most infuentia in the genre, at a time when country is second ony to top 40 as the nation s most popuar radio format, according to Niesen Audio. WSM-FM (which shares its ca etters with a egendary, separatey owned AM station) has beaten its four country-format competitors in Nashvie for the year to date, according to Niesen Audio. We ve refined the format, and it reay cicked, says the Michigan-raised father of two. Sister station WKDF (NASH-FM 103.3), meanwhie, has promoted showcases with rising acts ike Brett Young, Mickey Guyton, Runaway Jane and Chase Bryant. Country radio is in the wrong frame of mind, says Schumann, referring to the unusuay ong deveopment phase for new reeases. But the San Jose native beieves radio beats any digita patform when it comes to music discovery. Consider Head Over Boots from feow Caifornian Jon Pardi, which Deaton got behind 11 months before the song hit No. 1 on Biboard s Country Airpay chart. Choices ike that have heped KRTY rank No. 1 among a isteners 18 to 49. Whie AM sister station KLIV offers country god, at KRTY, promoting new music is what we do, says Deaton. That s the whoe phiosophy of the station. Radio needs to introduce you to new music from stars and new artists. Athough WNSH scored the highest cumuative audience in its history in September (more than 1.2 miion), Foxx says, I don t think anyone knows yet how big country in New York can be. The Phiadephiaraised Shomby had been programming a five-station custer in Norfok/Virginia Beach, Va., for Max Media of Hampton Bays when he took on his new Nashvie gig in March. At Cumuus Nashvie campus, which is fu of air personaities, Shomby jokes he was brought in to be the adut to run this schoo. Jibes aside, he has reaigned the focus of NASH s syndicated offerings. Bair Garner moved from America s Morning Show to a new overnight program. Ty Benti repaced Garner in mornings, and Kix Brooks Shomby exited overnights to focus on his weeky American Country Countdown. On Oct. 25, Cumuus crowned the winner of its Nash Next taent search, staged in 60 markets nationwide, with the victor getting a dea with Big Machine Labe Group. They are hit records with rock and rhythmic sounds, but fewer traditiona country sounds. Offering isteners a baance is the number one job for me and Chris Huff, my music director, he says. One sign they re succeeding: KILT ranks No. 4 among women 25 to 54, edging out crosstown country riva KKBQ in that segment. Thomas Rhett wrote it about his wife, Lauren Gregory, in October 2012, when he sti riding high over their wedding that same month. But if it weren t for socia media, that persona song might never have been cut at a. Fans posted videos of him performing Star on YouTube and pubicy shared their enthusiasm about it getting recorded. Their interest in the song was key in Star of the Show staying on Rhett s radar, and those videos that captured the performances were important because he had never made a demo, and the work tape from the writing session disappeared ong ago. It had never been recorded, period, says Rhett. Literay a that existed of the song was a YouTube cip. We, severa YouTube cips, actuay. Shorty after it was written, Rhett started paying Star of the Show in radio conference rooms during promotion tours and tour dates. A Nov. 5, 2012, performance in Patchogue, N.Y., is beieved to be the song s pubic debut. He revisited it the next night in Huntsvie, Aa., and two videos capture him singing it Jan. 19, 2013, in Miwaukee. Those eary outings created a buzz for the song, though he quicky repaced it in his set ist with music from his debut abum. I was in way more of a rock phase at that point, says Rhett. I was working with [producer] Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Litte Big Town), and that song just didn t fit RHETT at that time. Star of the Show did refect his reationship, though. Rhett saw other guys ook at his wife when they went out in pubic. In a esser man, those sorts of incidents can trigger jeaousy. For Rhett, it was simpy a confirmation of his good fortune. I went to Puckett s Grocery out in Leiper s Fork, Tenn., and I was doing a songwriter s round out there, he recas. I remember waking through the bar, and Lauren was wearing ike a T-shirt and jeans nothing fancy or specia and I remember peope ooking at her, and me ooking at her thinking, Why do you ook so amazing and you don t do anything? I want to say that the idea spurred from that. Rhett wrote Star of the Show with his father, songwriter Rhett Akins ( I Know Somebody, Just Gettin Started ), and Ben Haysip ( Huntin, Fishin and Lovin Every Day, Honey Bee ) at the Music Row office of Haysip s pubisher, THiS Music. Whie Lauren was ceary Rhett s muse that day, the other two writers didn t necessariy have her front of mind. First ove song ever from a father-in-aw to his daughter-in-aw, says Akins sarcasticay. I don t think we just sat around and taked about her a day at east, me and Ben didn t. We were drawing references from our past. It was more about writing a song about a gir everyone pays attention to. The first verse put the coupe on the street with other guys paying cose attention. The character in the song is practicay entertained by the woman s ack of awareness: You re so pretty and you ain t even got a cue. In the second verse, they wander into a bar, where she iteray becomes the star of the show: Even the band seems to sing for you. The bartender ikewise gives her her drinks for free, setting up an opportunity for the guy in the song to show what he s made of. In this case, the character stands back and aughs, though it doesn t aways work out that way in rea barroom scenarios. I do know guys that woud wak straight to the bartender and te him off and be a jerk, says Akins. Thomas Rhett is definitey that guy [in the song]. He oves it when Lauren gets a the attention, and the song definitey represents how he fees about her. Whie there was fan interest in him cutting it, Star of the Show didn t make Rhett s rock-textured debut abum, and he simpy forgot about it when it came time to record his sophomore abum, Tanged Up. Pus, he had a newer song about Lauren on that project Die a Happy Man, written in January 2015, more than two years after Star of the Show was created. That song, of course, was a watershed for Rhett, spending 17 weeks at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs and earning nominations for singe and song of the year at the Nov. 2 Country Music Association Awards. Tanged Up sod we enough that the RIAA certified it patinum, and Vaory decided it warranted a deuxe edition with extra songs. That provided an opening for Star of the Show. We were just ike, We, what of my od cataog woud work? recas Rhett. Randomy, Star of the Show popped into my head, and I was watching a the YouTube videos going, We have to cut this song. Simiarities quicky sprouted between Die and Star. Both, of course, were inspired by Lauren, and Rhett knew that he wanted a Teecaster to set the tone in Star, just ike its predecessor, though Star of the Show took a breezier emotiona stance. It is the happy version, the non-minory version of Die a Happy Man, offers Rhett. Rhett put his voice on a work tape (this one did not disappear) and sent it to Caifornia-based producer Joe London (Jason Deruo, Fifth Harmony), who co-wrote Die a Happy Man. London and Juian Bunetta (One Direction, Cobie Caiat) buit tracks, and Rhett spent a day with them in the studio. That version incorporated programmed percussion, a shimmering guitar ine at the end of the chorus and a ayer of stee guitar, courtesy of former Dwight Yoakam sideman Skip Edwards. He put a this coo, swoopy, od 70s-sounding stee on it, says Rhett. Severa tracks were in contention for a singe, with none of them taking a cear ead. But Vaory execs hadn t heard Star. Akins encouraged Rhett to send the rough mix to Big Machine Labe Group president/ceo Scott Borchetta, and that made the decision easy. Just minutes after he sent the track, Rhett got a text back with a fashing star GIF that procaimed Star as the next singe. That said, the roughs needed a itte ceanup. Rhett went in with producer Jesse Frasure to cut his fina voca, and Borchetta brought in producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Brantey Gibert) to do some revisions. They specificay asked him to hande the Teecaster part, as he did in Die a Happy Man, and he threw in some other stringed instruments to fi out the futtery chorusending section. Huff aso hired a ive drummer to humanize the percussion. The key was how to integrate that with the beats that were on the track, because there was a rea compeing eement about what was handed to me, says Huff. So I went in with Thomas drummer, Chris Kimmerer, and we kind of massaged that. Mixing engineer Justin Niebank (Vince Gi, Ei Young Band) repayed the bass part, too, deivering an end product that has just enough eements of the Happy Man fee to make Star seem ike a cheery seque. It is the same food group, aows Huff. Star of the Show shipped to radio via PayMPE on Sept. 30 and is aready top 20 on both Country Airpay and Hot Country Songs after five weeks. In the process, the socia and persona pieces are fitting together nicey. I ove that my fans are coo with me being ovey-dovey about my wife rather than pretending that I m singe and trying to act a sexy onstage, says Rhett. Pus, the eary success of Star suggests another persona highight coud we be on the horizon. Me and Dad have had success together before, but never on a song that I have put out as an artist, says Rhett. So if this song goes to the top of the chart, that be a new miestone for me and my dad. That s where the NPR-distributed radio show is produced and where host-producer David Dye presents LAMAY interviews and performances from what he cas essentia and emerging artists particuary focused on regiona roots music in a format free from genre constraints. It is heard on more than 200 stations nationwide. But as the show prepared to ceebrate its 25th anniversary on Oct. 11 (a ceebration that wi continue through 2017), its top executives decided an expansion was in order and chose Nashvie as the first-ever additiona hub for the show in partnership with NPR Music. That partnership invoves a beefed-up reationship with Nashvie affiiate WMOT (Roots Radio 89.5), which switched from jazz to an Americana format in a we-timed September move, as we as an increased roe for NPR Music s Nashvie-based correspondent Ann Powers. Whie Nashvie is principay known for country music, Word Cafe Nashvie wi ceebrate Music City s diversity, as we as that of the Southern region of the country. It s been increasingy cear to us over the recent years that there just seems to be more and more great music that goes beyond country coming out of Nashvie, says Roger LaMay, WXPN GM and board chair for NPR Music. Aong with Brookyn, it s probaby the pace where the most bands that come through our studios come from. Whie country music wi continue to be an important part of the mix, LaMay says the city s other forms of music, incuding Americana, sometimes get ost in the shadow of the country thing. He says the new hub wi aim to rectify this with wider exposure on a nationa patform for other genres. There s a ot of artists that obviousy don t fit into that mainstream country box that are not getting the kind of exposure maybe they deserve, he adds. LaMay says he and his team came to Nashvie during the summer and did some sessions as kind of a test run. We got such a warm reception down [there] that we reay fet great about being abe to do this and make it kind of a second home for the program. On the agenda are recording sessions, interviews, ive concerts and digita materia incuding streams and other specia events focused on and emanating from Nashvie and other parts of the south. And even more may be in the works: LaMay says if his team can raise the additiona funds, he woud ike to aunch a Nashvie video channe and a Word Cafe Nashvie podcast. We re going to do as much here as we can afford to do, he says of the city where he pans to start sma and buid. The new hub kicked off with a two-night ceebration at the oca City Winery Oct The first night featured a performance and Q&A with country star Eric Church, conducted by Powers. (The second night featured instrumenta band Steeism and other guests.) LaMay says Church was chosen for the aunch because he represents the kind of artist that has had great success in the commercia country word, but has a whoe ot more to say. That is certainy the kind of artist that we want to connect with. At the Oct. 27 event, NPR vp programming and audience deveopment Anya Grundmann said of the Nashvie expansion, We want to find the paces in our country that are ighting the fire under the music in our cuture. Jesus crowned the ist argey due to the success of Kristofferson s gospe-tinged Why Me, which became his ony Hot Country Songs No. 1 on Juy 7, The song features background vocas from his then-future wife, Rita Cooidge, and Larry Gatin. Kristofferson had visited a Nashvie church and, whie hearing Gatin sing Hep Me, he had a profound reigious experience, something that had never happened to me before, Kristofferson has said. Why Me came out of it. Kristofferson repaced himsef at No. 1 on Top Country Abums on Nov. 10, 1973, with Fu Moon, with Cooidge.
