She woud compensate him with $20 and a Coca-Coa, and he ended up iving with the Costners. He has tod that story through the years at concerts; in his book, Wak to Beautifu; and, more recenty, on his bog. Wayne finay got to recount it to a gathering of Coke executives on Apri 20. The room just cheered ike you woudn t beieve, he says. I was ike, Man, this is not a one-time speech. I ve been trying to get your attention for 18 years. Appropriatey, Coca-Coa is now using one of Wayne s songs, I Love You This Much, among just seven country copyrights in its new Share a Coke and a Song campaign, which debuted Apri 18. It s an extension of the Share a Coke program in which peope s names were imprinted on the soft drink s abes. Those names are now repaced by WAYNE the tite or a key yric from a song. Tayor Swift s You Beong With Me, Faith Hi s The Way You Love Me and Wiie Neson s Aways on My Mind are among the country tracks in the effort, which uses approximatey 70 songs tota. They range in eras from Charie Puth s current pop singe One Ca Away to the pubic-domain composition Take Me Out to the Ba Game, and in styes from Bachman Turner Overdrive s cassic-rocker Takin Care of Business to Caros Vives Latin-pop reease Ea Es Mi Fiesta ( She s My Party ). We wanted to use the yrics that connect peope and create those moments of sharing, Coke goba head of music Joe Beiotti tod Biboard in March. This was not about finding the most popuar songs of today. This was about finding yrics that can hep you connect with someone. Because at the end of the day, music and the yrics in songs hep you express what you sometimes aren t abe to put into words yoursef. Using phrases to connect peope isn t an entirey new idea. That kind of event is profoundy emotiona, typicay inducing questions about the meaning of ife, one s core beiefs and how to prioritize one s days. For Urban, that pondering was bound to make its way into the threads of Ripcord. The impact that it had is just bringing me again back into the moment and the brevity of time, he says. That theme is in a few songs on this record Wasted Time, for sure, is sort of refective. When ife is its simpest, it s reay at its best. Reeased to radio on March 29 through Pay MPE, Wasted Time finds Urban doing what he seems to do best, pushing the boundaries of country music whie baancing his appreciation for its foundations. But it avoids the moody, downcast atmosphere that woud be expected from someone adjusting to ife without his dad. Instead, the song begins with co-producer Greg Wes (Adee, Katy Perry) paying an EDM-ike synthesized keyboard. It s a fu 29 seconds before an eectric guitar thread and the choppy sounds of ganjo percussion move the production to more famiiar turf. By the time the journey ends, Urban manages to fod those jarring dance tones into his standard wheehouse with a big singaong chorus, ots of six-string sounds and a cheery, nigh-inspirationa message about ife in the 21st century. I aways chucke when peope go, Oh, I m trying to make a different record, says Urban. Anybody can make a different record. But to try and make a different record that sti has enough famiiarity to keep you istening to it, URBAN and it sti fees and sounds right that s what I m aways trying to baance in the studio. Wes payed a big roe in the different part of Wasted Time when they started writing the song in ate January or eary February. Keith was actuay the one reay pushing to have it not sound ike what you woud think maybe it shoud sound ike, says Wes. He s ike, Look, I ve been making records for 20 years. I wi sti bring my thing to it, but in terms of what you do, Greg, I reay want it to be fresh and kind of not what you woud think is possibe. So I just went for it. The process started at Wes Rocket Carouse Studio in Cuver City, Caif., with pop songwriter James JHart Abrahart, who has cuts on current abums by Justin Bieber and Charie Puth, bringing a third voice to the writing mix. Wes and Urban had met ony briefy during the 1990s, when they both were part of a songwriting retreat at a French caste, so there was an introductory period before the work began in earnest. We were kicking the can around as it were, and just getting to know each other a itte bit, and then at some point I just started hearing this reay funky, amost kind of Michae Jackson Off the Wa, very syncopated thing, recas Wes. He deveoped a six-chord progression on the keyboard, Urban pued a guitar from the studio wa, and the music began to take shape. The big-picture ife stuff that his father s death triggered came tumbing out in their conversation as the Austraian Urban, Canadian Wes and British-born, Atanta-raised Abrahart found commonaities in their upbringing. We were taking about some of the simiar things we a did crazy shit, running around town, drinking too much, smoking too much, hanging out down by a river, says Urban. Jay iked the tite Wasted Time. That s kind of what a that is, but it s when you re reay iving. Once the first verse was mosty finished, they took a break at a nearby Starbucks. When they got back to the music, Urban strapped on the guitar again and instanty found the chorus by changing direction. It s a big, straight-up, three-chord, power-chord chorus in the tradition of The Who, he says. Wes recorded it a as they went aong. Once the basic bueprint was aid, he focused on buiding the tracks whie Urban and Abrahart concentrated on yrics in the next room. Urban foded in a rope swing he and his friends payed on in Cabooture, Queensand. And they dropped in two references to Guns N Roses, name-checking Sweet Chid O Mine in the chorus and inserting a Guns on the radio ine in the prechorus. I remember us discussing whether we shoud carify that we ve got Guns N Roses on the radio, as opposed to we ve got Guns on the radio, because that might be a different, more of an NRA song, Urban says with a augh. We were ike, We, if someone thinks that, the chorus wi carify that here pretty soon. They didn t finish it that day, but some of Urban s origina vocas woud remain on Wasted Time a the way to the fina product. Urban and Abrahart aso worked on background vocas with Abrahart singing a third above the meody and both of them stacking extra vocas way off the mic to create a bigger sound. That s a nice eement to bend in, says Wes. You don t reay hear it, but if you took it out, you woud miss it. Late in the track s deveopment, Urban added ganjo, heightening the country quotient. He grooves so hard when he pays that the banjo becomes ike a sequencer amost, says Wes. It masks a ot of the stuff that s going on behind it. But when that banjo went on, it not ony sounded a biion times better, but it just fet ike the song had come home in terms of the istener. Urban, meanwhie, fashed back to some of the top 40 cubs he had payed in the eary part of his career, remembering that even in the midst of the dance grooves, the crowd aways responded if the DJ payed John Denver s Thank God I m a Country Boy. Urban decided the ganjo was the right choice for the soo section. That memory of Thank God I m a Country Boy has aways stayed with me, and I thought this woud be the hoedown moment right smack dab in the midde of this synth-based song, says Urban. Wes had him pay for 20 minutes, then took the best pieces for the soo, incuding an inventive snippet of side banjo. The fina mix of Wasted Time was competed just days before it went to radio, with its bouncy rhythms and upbeat message synced to summer s payfu energy. It aready is No. 15 on the Country Airpay tay in its fourth charted week, paying homage discreety to Urban s father. Not ony has Robert Urban s death made Urban more phiosophica, it aso has brought a spotight to his dad s infuence on his music. I m becoming more and more aware of the rhythmic bood that fows through me because of my father, who was a drummer his whoe ife, and my grandfather, who payed piano his whoe ife, says Urban. My ineage is very rhythm-based, and I remember so much rhythm in our house from my dad tapping on the tabe to jinging his keys to tapping on the dashboard of the car. He was aways in rhythm mode. Wasted Time, meanwhie, recognizes the ticking of the cock as one of the rhythms of ife. Urban views it metaphoricay the song digs up joy from the past, but he doesn t have to go backward to find happiness in iving in the moment. Right now I fee my ife is the best it has ever been, he says, but probaby because it fees ike it s back to being in that pace of enjoying ife again. Which I did when I was a kid.
