The year-end ist of 2015 s top country tites factoring in airpay, digita saes and onine streaming ranked Sam Hunt s Take Your Time, Litte Big Town s Gir Crush, Hunt s House Party, Luke Bryan s Kick the Dust Up and Thomas Rhett s Crash and Burn as the genre s top five songs. The more traditiona Country Airpay chart, based soey on airpay at country stations, graded Lee Brice s Drinking Cass, Frankie Baard s Young & Crazy, Brett Edredge s Lose My Mind, Dustin Lynch s He of a Night and Coe Swinde s Let Me See Ya Gir as the year s top singes. (Both year-end ists are based on cumuative activity for each RHETT week a tite appeared on the chart.) A 10 of those reeases were unquestionaby hits during But if you had to pick which set best defined country music ast year, neary everyone seems to agree that the Hot Country Songs ist, which measures both terrestria programmers decisions and the marketpace reaction to music by consumers, more accuratey refected reaity. It kind of brings everything in and combines it a into one chart, says WBWL Boston PD Lance Houston. The resuts were something of a victory for Hot Country Songs, which came under fire when it was introduced with the chart dated Oct. 20, Biboard received a number of etters from conspiracy theorists among the consumer base who were convinced the new chart was an effort to favor Tayor Swift over Carrie Underwood. Some Music Row executives were frustrated because, as one marketing executive put it, it s not possibe to work the chart and get specific, predictabe resuts. But that s aso the most positive seing point for Hot Country Songs, since readers who want an accurate assessment of what s happening among consumers are ess apt to be manipuated by the data. If you can move the neede by infuencing YouTube views and digita saes and airpay in the same week, you re pretty damn good at what you do, Dot GM Chris Stacey, a former promotion executive, says with a augh. Since radio first began to take research seriousy in the mid-1970s, measuring consumers feedback has been paramount as programmers decided what songs to add, the frequency that they pay them and when to retire them. During some periods of time particuary the CD-dominated era of the 1990s, when songs were often not reeased as singes caout research and nationa charts were weighted more heaviy than amost any other factor. But in the Internet era, the word has changed dramaticay. Consumers have more paces to find music, and their digita footprints make it easier to quantify reactions. Thus, programmers are ooking at more sources of information than ever, often narrowing the data to focus on the behavior of isteners in their own oca market. The younger generation uses media differenty, says WYCD Detroit operations manager/pd Tim Roberts, who wi be presented as a 2016 Country Radio Ha of Fame inductee during Country Radio Seminar, set for Feb There s more avenues to discover music, athough radio s sti the No. 1 discovery [source] 95 percent of peope isten to reguar od terrestria every day. The quick takeaway is that the bigger, more powerfu hits wi probaby more quicky revea themseves on the Hot Country Songs chart versus a traditiona straight-airpay chart, because it s getting info from so many sources, says Stacey. That doesn't demean airpay or the way the Country Airpay chart works. There s vaue in knowing what broadcasters are thinking, and there s a certain rhythm to the way music moves up and down that ist. By taking in audience response directy, the Hot Country Songs chart invariaby has more quirks it s more mercuria, as one radio veteran puts it but over the ong hau, it seems to do a better job of accuratey measuring the marketpace, as those 2015 year-end ists proved. A great programmer is aready ooking at a of the metrics, says Hunnicutt. But it s nice to see it a gathered up into one pace. The track, BRYAN, FAIRCHILD written by Jody Stevens, Coe Tayor, Jaida Dreyer and Tommy Ceci, tes the story of two scorned overs who meet in a bar and eventuay hook up to exact revenge on their former fames. The singe has been nominated for voca event of the year by the Academy of Country Music, with awards to be handed out Apri 3 on CBS. Bryan, who wi host the show with Dierks Bentey, is aso up for entertainer of the year (which he won in 2013 and 2015). Litte Big Town scored a number of nominations, incuding group of the year. Bryan notches his 14th eader and third from his fifth studio LP, Ki the Lights, foowing Kick the Dust Up (on the chart dated Aug. 15, 2015) and Strip It Down (two weeks in October and November). The abum, which debuted atop both Top Country Abums and the mutigenre Biboard 200 (Aug. 29, 2015), has sod 882,000 copies in the United States to date. On Hot Country Songs, Home hods at its No. 3 high. The voca chemistry between Bryan and Fairchid (the first femae to rank atop Country Airpay since Kesea Baerini, with Love Me Like You Mean It on the Juy 4, 2015, chart) has been we-received at radio. The Swon Brothers essentiay confirmed their departure from Sony by dropping an indie EP, Timeess, on Jan. 29. Now Chris Young and Cassadee Pope are ocking voices in an epic manner, as Think of You sets the two of them on what appears in its eary stages wi be a highy successfu run together. They re singing the song in tandem on his current I m Comin Over Tour. And they even cut the fina vocas in the same studio on the same day, which is a bit of a rarity with modern technoogy. Her and Chris voices bended better than I coud have imagined, coproducer Corey Crowder says. It was a reay specia thing that happened. Specia indeed. Penty of proposed duets never take pace, because it requires a whoe chain of good fortune as two careers on different trajectories attempt to ine up. It s not as difficut as, say, anding a man on the moon, but it s sti not a sam-dunk proposition. I was just reay incrediby ucky, says Young, that, one, I asked Cassadee she was my first choice to do this duet with; two, that she wanted to do it; and three, that her abe was as excited about it as mine was, because that s a ot of different things to a cick into pace. But Think of You has from its very conception defied convention. And Pope fet the same sparks that Young and Crowder shared as that fina voca fe into pace. The first time harmonizing with him in the studio I was ike, Wow, this coud be a singe, she says. It just fet so right. As right as it might have fet, Think of You ony exists because a rea-ife situation fet so wrong. I have some cose friends that have had some pretty hard breakups and divorces, says Crowder. I found it s reay hard to make conversation with them because I know them as a coupe. I ve kind of ived the other side of that [song] where we re out drinking, but we don t have your co-partner here, and it just made it weird. It became more profound when Crowder imagined himsef as a divorced man. He started dating his wife, Laney Crowder, at age 16. Now, at age 32, he has spent exacty haf his ife with her at his side. He recognized that many of his friends know him ony in the context of that reationship, and it ed to what became the hook for the duet: When they think of me, they think of you. Crowder didn t have a meody or any more words to go with it. But he did come up with a groove, and he introduced the whoe concept to Young and songwriter Josh Hoge in September 2014 when they wrote their second or third song as a unit. (The trio wrote Young s previous singe, I m Comin Over, in December 2014.) They discussed the odds against it working as a duet, but after about 10 minutes, decided it worked better as a vehice for two voices and punged in. The thing that sticks out the most for me and excites me the most about it is that it s uptempo, says Hoge. You aways hear a duet and you think of either a sad baad or a baad ove song. This is kind of the opposite. It has the yrica content of those sorts of songs, but it s uptempo, which I think is kind of coo. Once they had committed to a duet, writing Think of You was a fairy painess process. The biggest issue might we have been scupting the meody in a way that was suitabe for Young but didn t eiminate too many potentia voca partners. Having a song that s going to be a duet, you don t want to hit a reay ow register, Young says. It s going to be kind of hard to find somebody to overap we with your voice, and you have to think about more than just one person on the song. POPE (LEFT) AND YOUNG Sti, Think of You takes a meodic journey, rising in tone and emotion at the first chorus. Young sings the second verse an octave higher than the first, and after the second chorus, it segues into a fame-themed bridge that s even higher. It a kind of buids to that bridge section and not just meodicay, says Young. Emotionay, too. The [attitude] seems to aways be you never write a bridge or burn one if you don t have to, notes Hoge, but sti I m bown away by Chris' voice, so if it were up to me, we d probaby have six- or seven-minute songs so he coud just keep singing. Crowder buit a demo on the fy as they worked, front-oading it with a haunting arpeggiated guitar part that was inspired by U2. He aso got songwriter Emiy Shacketon to sing the femae part as a pacehoder. Who woud provide the fina femae voice? That question didn t take ong to answer. Young payed a Stars and Guitars event for WKIS Miami on Nov. 9, 2014, and when he heard Pope cover Bon Jovi s Bed of Roses, she became his first choice. Young and Crowder went ahead and hed a tracking session in the front room at Nashvie s Sound Stage, taking a risk that even if Pope wasn t abe to do the duet, they woud find someone. Derek Wes stacked ayers of guitars on it, and Mies McPherson doubed a the programmed drum parts from the demo, creating a human/synthetic bend underneath the other instruments. Repubic Nashvie gave Pope approva to do the cut, and she assumed that Young s scratch voca was the fina. I had no idea that he was going to be tracking again, she says. It was amazing the way it was. They worked together in the back room at Sound Stage in Apri 2015 to guarantee the vocas woud have a unity to them. They did severa passes isoated in different booths, and Crowder had them sing out on the foor together a coupe times, just to see if it changed the emotion. Pope had come up with a coupe tweaks for the bridge to personaize it a bit, and they et her go for it, znot knowing what was in store. She hit a high note a C or a C sharp; assessments vary but they were convinced she had taken Think of You to yet another eve. Cory and Chris were in there ceebrating through the gass, putting their hands in the air, getting excited, she says. It gave me that vaidation of, A right, I think they ike what I m doing. She naied it, says Crowder. Me and Chris are freaking out in the contro room ike, What in the word? No way she just hit that note. And I, kind of in an attempt to catch her, I was ike, Hey, can you do that again? And she did it again and perfect again. I think we got her to do it one more time, and every pass was money. In October, Young asked her to open his tour in 2016, supporting the singe by singing it together on the road. RCA reeased it to radio via Pay MPE on Jan. 11, and it s aready at No. 22 on Hot Country Songs in a fast five weeks. Ceary, writing it as a duet was a good move Think of You made it through the maze to the marketpace. In the process, everyone in the chain was abe to grasp the emotion at the core. Enter Reviver Records and LoCash, which just scored the unikeiest of hits when I Love This Life peaked at No. 2 on the Country Airpay chart dated Jan. 19 in the singe s 47th week on the ist. The duo Preston Brust and Chris Lucas first charted in 2010 via a dea with Stroudavarious Records after severa years working as an independent act then known as LoCash Cowboys. Radio was certainy aware of the hard-working and eminenty ikeabe duo. And athough it eventuay began scoring successfu cuts by other artists as songwriters, a hit of its own euded it. That finay changed when fedging Reviver took an interest and signed the pair. First, indie promotion team Star Farm worked I Love This Life unti it hit the 40s on the chart. Then in Juy 2015 the abe hired its own promotion team, headed by senior vp promotion Gator Michaes. (Star Farm continued to work the project throughout the ife of the record, according to Michaes.) In a previous interview, Brust tod Biboard Country Update, When Gator Michaes came onboard, it was an amazing moment because he came in with a vision, he came in with a pan, he came in with beief. The record was aready doing reay we, but he knew exacty what needed to be done and he did it. That guy is a rock star in the radio word. Michaes, who admits his eary expectations were that I Love This Life woud just do we enough to be a foot in the door at radio, defects the credit to his staff and to the act, caing LoCash the two hardest-working peope I ve ever met in my ife. They re LOCASH kind of the poster boys for [the idea that you] go out and work harder than anybody ese and your time wi come. That s what s happening right now. Working in the duo s favor was penty of goodwi for it at radio, particuary after it paid out of pocket to fufi its commitments to pay shows for radio after Stroudavarious successor, R&J Records, shut down in There was a group of beievers that got on this record eary and stayed in it for a very ong time, says Michaes of the singe s radio supporters. It s a itte bit stunning when you break down the numbers of stations that have payed this record more than 1,000 times. Among the many supportive programmers he cites is WPGB Pittsburgh PD JD Greene, who has got amost 2,300 spins in on this record. Michaes credits some of that support to the duo s existing reationships at country radio and some to the fact that the song just worked. It s sti testing through the roof for a ot of peope at radio. It just struck a chord with the audience. It s a very happy, positive song at a time when a ot of peope are just ooking for something positive in their ife. The record continued to buid momentum during the notoriousy tough hoiday season, says Michaes, because, It s a song about the things that reay matter about your famiy and your faith and your friends and happiness, and that is what the hoidays are a about. But the batte for airpay wasn t easy. I have a staff that got boody, says Michaes. It s easy to forget [now] that in the midde of [ast] summer, the true dog days the staff s out just pounding their head against a brick wa and going back the next day and doing it a over again. We were scratching and cawing and fighting trying to get one or two adds. There was a big stretch of time between February and June that there was never more than two adds in any given week. We aways had something, but never had more than two. Then we started seeing a itte bit of research, getting a itte bit of momentum, and one and two turned into four and five. And then suddeny four and five turned into doube-digit adds seven months into the singe. Kind of crazy. Michaes says of his team, Every singe day they beieved that this record deserved to be on the radio and woudn t take no for an answer. They kept going back and knocking on doors after peope tod them over and over and over again that they weren t interested. They woud get up the next week and make the ca. They just never stopped beieving. I m incrediby proud of the work they did. Michaes aso gives some credit to a riva abe. He says the breakthrough success Back River enjoyed ast year with Kesea Baerini was a rising tide that ifted the perception of a independent abes at radio. It cracked open the door and gave us a itte bit of extra energy as we were fighting aong the way. The road got bumpy again for the abe in the fina push for the top of the chart. The singe spent eight weeks in the top 10, but due to bad timing it got stuck behind a record that caimed the summit for six weeks, Thomas Rhett s juggernaut Die a Happy Man. Whie he admits to some understandabe disappointment that the singe fe just short of the peak, Michaes is sti happy to ceebrate a No. 2 hit. He says the singe is firting with god. In the next six to eight weeks, knock on wood, a indications are we have a god singe with this. For the first reease from a brand-new independent abe in Nashvie, that s not too bad. The next LoCash singe, I Know Somebody, goes for adds Feb. 22, and the band wi reease its first fu-ength abum ater this year. There s a ot of peope that doubted whether this brand-new abe, with an act that has been around for a few years, coud deiver on a hit, says Michaes. I think we ve answered those questions pretty ceary at this point. We have every reason to beieve that the LoCash momentum is just getting started.

On Feb. 8, 1960, Jim Reeves, then 36, rose to the summit with He Have to Go, utimatey eading for 14 weeks and tying for the chart s fourth-ongest command to date. The track, penned by husband-and-wife songwriting team Joe and Audrey Aison, was the B-side of In a Mansion Stands My Love. When that track staed, DJs started spinning the fip side. On Juy 31, 1964, Reeves and band member Dean Manue set out from Arkansas for Nashvie in a singe-engine pane, with Reeves pioting.
