That s the cartoon version of the question broadcasters addressed during the 49th annua Country Radio Seminar (CRS) Feb. 5-7 in Nashvie. The audio-ony terrestria radio medium wi turn 100 in 2020, drawing dinosaur comparisons as it strugges to define its pace at a time when the automated ifestyes of George Jetson and Jane, his wife, are on the horizon. Amazon Aexa is transforming the computer into a Star Trekike interactive speaking format, and a company from The Netherands, PAL-V, is potting the 2019 introduction of a fying car. BERNER Radio is most certainy chaenged. Its time spent istening is down, staffs have been pared to the bone, and two of the medium s argest firms iheartmedia and Cumuus are addressing ong-standing financia straitjackets. Under those circumstances, does radio have a future? Cumuus, she said, had undergone four consecutive years of decine and was besieged by widespread empoyee dissatisfaction under the previous regime. That s significant because radio hardware has sowy disappeared from homes. A third of year-ods have no radio in their house, but Aexa which shows eary signs of becoming a standard piece of persona equipment, akin to a mobie phone is now teaching them ways to integrate hands-free audio consumption into their ives. Attendees were encouraged to be aggressive with getting estabished eary on smart speakers and to educate their isteners aong the way. The song becomes the ongest-eading No. 1 in the chart s history for a song by a ead femae. It passes the 10-week reign of Tayor Swift s feow country-pop crossover hit We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together in 2012 and Swift s hit retains the record for the most weeks at No. 1 for a femae unaccompanied by another act. (Hot Country Songs began as an a-encompassing genre songs chart in 1958 and adopted its current streaming-, airpay- and saesbased methodoogy on Oct. 20, 2012, which was the first week that Swift s Never spent at No. 1.) Meant is being duay promoted to pop and country radio as it ifts on the Adut Pop Songs airpay chart, on Pop Songs and on Country Airpay (12.3 miion impressions, up 25 percent, in the week ending Feb. 11, according to Niesen Music). The beautifu thing about music is that it aows you to break boundaries, and that s what I want to be remembered for: breaking boundaries. The duo s Cruise reached No. 4 in June Meant marks the second Hot 100 top 10 for a country act in under a year. The cause of death was not immediatey known, though his passing shocked Nashvie s creative community. He had payed two concerts over the weekend Feb. 9 in Dadevie, Aa., and Feb. 10 in Lafayette, La. after performing at memorias for other artists in recent weeks. So when Dan + Shay started teasing fans on socia media with the word Tequia, they essentiay set isteners up for a party. The person who drinks tequia is aways the et s do shots person, ead singer Shay Mooney says. It s not just you and a buddy, it s you and 12 other peope. It s ike one tequia drinker is the advocate for everyone s hangover the next day. Thus, when Dan + Shay unveied their take on Tequia, the opening bars were a joting surprise: dark, brooding piano chords; etherea shimmering sounds underneath; and Mooney in a contempative mode, so cose to the mic that you sense the moisture in every one of his breaths. At first, when you hear that tite, you think ike party song, uptempo, fee good, ike, Let s drink tequia and get crazy, says the duo s Dan Smyers, who co-wrote and co-produced the song. But you know, typica Nashvie songwriter, my brain goes off, and I m ike, What if we make it a sad song? And what if it s actuay three different songs in one? Smyers produced it in tandem with Scott Hendricks (Bake Sheton, Chris Janson) in an evoutionary manner. After its mysterious first verse and chorus, it opens into a brighter, ceaner second section before cosing after the bridge with a swe of strings. DAN + SHAY It takes you on a journey through the song, says co-writer Jordan Reynods. That sounds so cheesy, but it s an experience. Each section adds something, and it buids on the other, and I just think how they take you through that journey is incredibe. In fact, Tequia required a bit of a journey to arrive at that sonic destination. Reynods hosted a writing session on Jan. 13, 2017, at his home in East Nashvie, with Smyers and Nicoe Gayon ( Femae, A the Pretty Girs ). Reynods had a tite, too: When I Taste Tequia, which was eventuay truncated into a singe word. They quicky decided it shoud represent a trip down memory ane. Senses are the utimate nostagia triggers, says Smyers. Whether it s sme or taste, they take you right back. Like anytime I drink Coors Lite or sme Coors Lite, it fees ike I m at a baseba game with my dad when I m a itte kid. Reynods had heard the when I taste tequia phrase in conversation, but didn t necessariy have an acoho-reated experience his most distinct sensory nostagia comes from a Victoria s Secret scent, Love Spe, that reminds him of his first girfriend. But once they started buiding ines and a meody, he came up with a keyboard sound on his aptop that provided the right emotiona tone for their effort. It s a custom piano I made in Logic, he says. It s based off the Steinway piano in Logic, and I messed with it a bunch, put in some reverb and some distortion, so you can pay simpe things and it reay just puts you in a mood right away. They wrote the pre-chorus first, isting a handfu of drinks whiskey, red wine, champagne and scotch that are memory-neutra, eading into the chorus refection on tequia and the experiences that tie it in his mind to that ost ove. The images serve a purpose, too, starting with a sorority T-shirt, courtesy of Gayon. Sorority T-shirt was a coo way to subty put a time stamp on the song and go, This is the age that I approximatey was when this happened without saying, I was 20, or 19 or 21, she says. The second image, sky high in Coorado, obviousy pays upon the state s atitude and its egaized marijuana, though it aso speaks to the depth of the reationship, impying in four words that they vacationed as a coupe. It just kind of shows they spent a ot of time together and were pretty cose, says Reynods. Reynods provided the voca for the demo atop his piano chords, and Dan + Shay ived with that stripped-down version for months before a tracking session at Ocean Way. The date yieded a soid guitar-driven foundation at 80 beats per minute, but when Smyers reviewed it at home, it fet ike it was missing something. He peeed away some of the instruments, grafted Reynods meanchoy piano into the mix, then sped the tracks up 6 bpm, which required some massaging to maintain the authenticity of the instruments. Smyers mixed two pads sustained chords aong with the sound of scratchy viny to create the meanchoy opening sound, and enisted guitarist Bryan Sutton to pay a Dobro soo and a series of fis at the end. Smyers put in severa extra effects, too, incuding the sound of a water drop meant to symboize drops of tequia which he manipuated to fit the key of the fina recording. In tota, Smyers amassed roughy 160 tracks, incuding 60 stacked background voca ayers provided by Smyers and his wife, Abby Law Smyers, whose 12 tracks of when I, when I harmony represent the first time she had sung into a microphone. Mooney s contribution was comparativey easy: After repeatedy working on the scratch voca during the origina tracking session, he popped back into a studio to deiver the fina performance in just one or two takes. In the spirit of the song, I think Dan and I poured ourseves a coupe shots of tequia, recas Mooney. That warms our voice up a itte bit. Smyers hinted to Hendricks and his co-writers that he wanted to transform Tequia, though most of his work was done in secrecy. Dan abored over this track aone in the studio above his garage for weeks and weeks and was ike, No, you can t hear it yet, says Gayon. It was such his baby. And then when he payed it for me, it a became apparent what it was that he was doing up there. There were a ot of itte specia moments, ike in the drum sounds and background parts, that just took the song to the next eve. Warner Music Nashvie fiercey debated what to reease as a first singe from the next abum, with an uptempo cut originay pegged to ead the way. But the duo had a FaceTime meeting with the abe whie the two were touring in Europe in December 2017, and WMN president/ceo John Esposito announced Tequia had won. The singe arrived at country radio via PayMPE on Jan. 10 and rode eary airpay, streaming and heavy digita saes to a No. 15 debut on the Jan. 27 Hot Country Songs chart. It continues to move upward at radio: It s No. 44 on the Feb. 17 Country Airpay ist. A of that supports Mooney s theory that a huge voume of onine fan versions indicates it s a winner. You can definitey te when you have a hit on your hands by the more peope that cover it, he suggests. If you ook, Tequia has 30 times the amount of covers on YouTube, Instagram and things than any other song than we ve ever done. It s a weird thing to base it off of, but it s a reay good reaction. And maybe an indicator that Dan + Shay wi have reason to ceebrate in a very expected way with shots of tequia once its journey comes to an end. ROB NORRIS
