The Strangers ran through one or two songs, and at the end, Haggard ripped into the engineer, who had made some adjustments to the sound that were contrary to his instructions. The sound guy had an expanation, but Haggard brushed him off. He was the singer, he had been doing it for at that time 40 years, and it woud be done his way. The unspoken impication in the argument was that Haggard knew how to connect. His songs were what aowed him to transform himsef from an outsider to an accepted even revered part of cuture. Many country cassics have been written by a singe songwriter. Patsy Cine s Crazy was penned by Wiie Neson. Johnny Cash s A Boy Named Sue was written by writer-poet She Siverstein. And Doy Parton s 9 to 5 was penned by Parton hersef. In the 2000s, Aan Jackson was the soe creator of his own Where Were You (When the Word Stopped Turning). Brad Paisey authored his Letter to Me. And Zac Brown wrote his band s Free. In more recent years, however, the country hit written by one writer has become neary obsoete, mirroring the sharp trend among pop hits. On the Hot Country Songs chart dated Apri 23, Tim McGraw ascends to No. 1 with Humbe and Kind. The baad was written by fok-country singer-songwriter Lori McKenna. Carter s I m a Man of Constant Sorrow (Sawyer Fredericks). Let s go back five years, to the chart dated Apri 23, The number of tites in the Hot Country Songs top 50 bied to one writer that frame? Again, two. If we trave back 10 years, to the Apri 22, 2006, chart, we get two again (incuding George Strait s The Seashores of Od Mexico, written by Mere Haggard circa 1970). We need to go 15 years back, to the Apri 21, 2001, survey to finay see a marked increase in soo songwriter hits, when nine such songs appeared in the ist s top 50. Twenty years back, to Apri 27, 1996, shows eight. And, 25 years ago, on the Apri 27, 1991, ranking, 14 of the top 50 were crafted by a soe writer. Finay, et s ook back 30 and 40 years. The numbers of one-writer entries in the chart s top 50 in each respective mid-apri week: 17 in 1986 and 31 in The shift from 31 songs in the Hot Country Songs top 50 this week 40 years ago credited to one writer to a mere one on the atest tay echoes the decine in such hits on the a-format Biboard Hot 100. As covered in the October 2015 Biboard artice, Why Soo Songwriters Are No Longer Today s Hitmakers, just one song on the entire chart was penned by one person: Twenty One Piots Stressed Out (by the duo s Tyer Joseph). The trend downward was simiary staggering: In ate October 2005, singe writers (or singuary credited entities) wrote 14 tites, which itsef was down sharpy from mid-october 1995 (32 such songs), 1985 (41) and 1975 (51). What s behind the extreme shift? One reason there were so many singe writers back in the day was because of the money you can make an incredibe amount in a short time with a hit song and peope were reuctant to share credit, John Seabrook, author of The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory, mused in the Biboard story. But, by the 1990s, according to Seabrook, and perhaps infuenced by technoogica advances in production, a new stye of songwriting began to take hod: The track-and-hook method, [whereby] a track is amost a canvas with some background painted onto it and different peope add hooks and a bridge and a chorus and, sowy, it becomes a song, rather than [it] springing fuy formed from the imagination of Burt Bacharach, sitting at the piano. A Bacharach meody is not inviting peope to get invoved with it, Seabrook concuded. But, track-and-hook creates a tempate for a ot of different cooks stirring the broth. Adds Dave Penn, co-founder/editor-inchief of Hit Songs Deconstructed, Everyone invoved, hopefuy, has an important ski that they bring to the tabe, whether it s yrics or music. Pus: Sometimes when you have more than one writer, you never know what additiona ideas you re going to get. It a comes down to the song, says Penn. If it s a great song, it s a great song. But sometimes an adventure just has to end for a new one to begin. Kesea Baerini s ending summation of the guy in her Peter Pan video a eather-jacketed daredevi with a seductivey perfect smie points to an issue that many women face as they weed through the frogs to find their prince. Men who ive on the edge are wid and exciting, but they tend to create a ot of drama, too. The dependabe guy who pays the bis on time and cas when he says he wi isn t as sexy in the short term. Finding the right mix of those two things is the chaenge for the adut American mae. Some are abe to make room for both their inner chid and the steadfast man. Many choose one of the extremes, as does the guy in Peter Pan, a song that goes much farther beow the yrica surface than Baerini s introductory hits, Love Me Like You Mean It and Dibs. I ve gotten to show that fun, young, youthfu, firty side of me that s totay a side of me but I m reay excited to baance that out with that depth and that emotion, says Baerini, putting Peter Pan in context. I think that that s an even bigger part of me that I ve been waiting to share. Waiting indeed. Baerini wrote the song about two-and-a-haf years ago, when she had a songwriting dea with Back River Music Pubishing but hadn t yet snared a recording contract. She shared the writers room that day BALLERINI with Love Me Like You Mean It co-writer Forest Gen Whitehead and Jesse Lee, a former recording artist who charted one tite for Atantic in Lee and Whitehead had written one song before that was paced on hod, but never recorded, by Jana Kramer. Lee had carried around the key ines from the Peter Pan chorus You re never gonna grow up/you re never gonna be a man/peter Pan for about six months. And even Lee isn t quite sure why she shared it that day. I had never written with Kesea. She didn t have a record dea, and I d never heard of her, remembers Lee. Usuay, us writers in Nashvie, we don t bring our favorite idea to unknown peope in the room that you don t know if you re going to ge with. So Lee hedged her bets. She tod Baerini and Whitehead that she had a great idea, but if they didn t absoutey nai it, she woud take it back and rewrite it with someone ese. The pressure was on, says Baerini. Immediatey, I think we a were superinspired. Whether it s a guy or not, everyone has been in a reationship where someone can t quite match them emotionay, can t quite grow up ike the other person can. We probaby wrote that song in two hours, if that. Lee described the carefree guy with the opening words the smie, the charm and they got through the initia verse fairy quicky. Lee and Whitehead, according to Baerini, eft the room for a bit, and whie they were gone, she fashioned a pre-chorus You re just a ost... boy.../with your head up in the couds that captures the isoation and misguided motivations behind the guy s personaity. He s not necessariy an asshoe, says Lee. He just doesn t know how to be great in a reationship. Lee was the driving force in the chorus, working the mythica isand of Neverand into the yrics. And it was Whitehead who reshaped the ost boy pre-chorus into the song s bridge, bending the meody and addressing the guy directy: You don t know what you ost, boy/too busy chasing stars. That s probaby my favorite part of the song, says Baerini, because I fee ike it sums the whoe thing up. They recorded a guitar-driven worktape that day in the Back River writing room with Baerini singing ead and Lee on harmonies, cautiousy optimistic that it was going to work. We finished the song, and we a just ooked at each other and were ike, Oh, my gosh, this sounds ike a hit, recas Lee. That doesn t happen that much. Sometimes it does, and then three days ater you re ike, That does not sound ike a hit. What were we thinking? Their evauation didn t change on Peter Pan, even after they made a more forma demo about a week ater. They got outside confirmation, of sorts, when Kimbery Perry got excited about it. Her brothers were ess enthusiastic, so The Band Perry passed. Not ong after, Baerini got her recording dea, in December 2013, and the three writers agreed she shoud keep it for hersef. Whitehead and Jason Massey co-produced it in their home studios, ayering the instruments around the voca that Baerini put down on the Peter Pan worktape. Kesea captures the best vocas the day that you write the song, says Whitehead. We tried to go back in the studio and beat these vocas, but we coudn t beat whatever emotion she was feeing when we were writing. Peter Pan is ike most of the songs [on The First Time]. The initia vocas that we get after writing in the room that day usuay are the ones that make it on the abum and to radio. They buit much of the track s sound around baritone guitars, using the ower frequencies to convey the song s dark sadness, and Massey came up with a repeated, two-note guitar section at the start of the bridge that sounds much ike an ambuance siren, a warning perhaps of the interna emergency the woman in Peter Pan experiences when she finay understands the guy is emotionay out of reach. Ironicay, though Peter Pan was founded upon a fairytae character, the production eans ess on programming and more on rea instrumentation than Baerini s first two singes. This just needed to sound rea, says Whitehead. It s not a fun song by any means. It s supposed to just suck you in and captivate you. The Peter Pan character has shown itsef repeatedy to Lee since they wrote it. Geico has an ad with a bratty Peter Pan kid (actor Thomas Barbusca, whose unusua name is sighty reminiscent of Baerini s); a friend who refers to himsef as Peter Pan was part of Lee s wedding party; and when a house that Lee had her eye on went on the market, the isting incuded the words Peter Pan in the caption for a room that is now her music room. In the meantime, Back River issued a radio edit of Peter Pan (the ony change from the abum, according to Whitehead, is that they shaved off a threestroke drum ick from the opening) through Pay MPE on March 2. It is No. 28 on Hot Country Songs in its third charted week, and the video underscores the weight of the song, which Baerini aways viewed as a key track that s being reeased at just the right time to capitaize on her career momentum. This was a song that I wanted to put out from the second I wrote it, she says. It s my baby on the abum. For some, Hag was part of the reason they pursued careers in country radio in the first pace. Much of Haggard s egacy is obvious, as evidenced by the 71 top 10 hits and 38 No. 1s he amassed during sighty more than two decades. Haggard s impact on other country artists is aso measurabe. His working man s poet songs have been covered by numerous other stars, and Haggard himsef has been named-checked in countess country hits, ranging from Brooks & Dunn s Litte Country Gir and Coin Raye s My Kind of Gir to Dixie Chicks Long Time Gone and, more recenty, Jake Owen s Yee Haw and Forida Georgia Line s Sun Daze. Ron Meredith, president of Cinton Broadcasters, seected the country superstar as the namesake for the Knoxvie, Tenn., radio station he signed on in 2007, WMYL (96.7 Mere FM). Meredith says he chose the name so that everyone woud understand what we did... There is ony one name that I can think of that everyone understands to be country music: Mere. I had the opportunity to meet Mere one time, but I remember it ike it was yesterday. [He was] kind, soft-spoken and genuiney humbe. After so much success and so many giant moments in his ife, that spoke voumes. Roberts says he was devastated by the news of mighty Mere s passing. When I first got into country radio, he was my guy. Fat out, in my opinion, he was the best country singer of a time. Even George Jones thought so, so that says something right there. Looking back on some persona memories of time spent with Haggard, Roberts says, I m fortunate that I booked him for a few shows over the years and got the chance to hang with him. He was aways gracious, interesting and [a] totay fascinating, first-cass guy. He aso heped so many other country artists of today aong the way. Our country word wi miss him but never forget him.
