Facebook ikes. Caout scores. YouTube streams. Saes figures. The numbers add up to stress. The record business and the radio industry particuary the programming segment of broadcasting are awash in numbers. Jobs and saaries hang on those reports, and the expectations from the top are intense. Many, perhaps most, terrestria empoyees are handing mutipe roes for mutipe stations. That workoad makes it more difficut to focus at a time when focus seems more crucia than ever. Radio has an increasing number of competitors, making it difficut to maintain an edge. As Country Radio Seminar proceeds Feb in Nashvie, scads of data wi be shared, dissected and contextuaized, but Country Radio Broadcasters the organization that produces CRS is NAME TK HERE making an effort to keep the focus on what s behind those numbers: rea peope. It s easy to forget in a resuts-focused atmosphere that ratings points, downoads and Twitter foowers are a intended to quantify something much more basic: human beings. At its Tom.Roand@biboard.com ROSIN BALDRICA CLARK heart, that s what successfu radio stations and successfu artists do: make a connection through the emotion of a song, a story or a joke. Emotion is more important than ever, says Midwest Communications corporate country brand strategist Tom Badrica. A former Music Row marketer and promotion rep, he moved back to Minnesota to recaim a piece of his persona ife, and he discuss that move in a Feb. 9 pane, Whie You Were Out: To the Beach and Back. Emotion, he says, is the ony thing that cuts through a the white noise, and I don t think that s just on the radio. I think that s in ife in genera. As the word gets scarier a the time, I think peope are reay ooking for that pace where they can connect on a baseine human eve, and everything ese past that is a bunch of bushit. The tech-driven digita age is oaded with impersona hardware cicking hard drives, pinging smartphones, massive TV screens but those machines woudn t have the command they do were it not for the content they convey. And the content that seems to win out most is the stuff that makes the biggest

It s in that word that radio operates, and CRS annua Edison Media research project wi try to make sense of it for broadcasters with both a ream of data and ive-camera footage of consumers using media in their rea-word environment. Peope are an asset that heps radio differentiate itsef from such new-tech patforms as ipods and streaming services, and it s a key point in the Feb. 9 research presentation. We have research that isoates peope who pay for SiriusXM and isoates peope who pay for Spotify or Pandora One, and it shows that they sti isten to a ot of broadcast radio, says Edison president Larry Rosin. So we ask, Why? Why, if you re paying for some sort of substitutive product, do you sti isten to radio? And the research tes us why. That s what we re going to tak about: How can we ensure that they continue to come to us with so many options going forward? Radio s peope wi be courted, wined and dined during the seminar by record abes hoping to use their medium for artists who have their own emotiona connection to make. Discovering or hanging with acts is the most gamorous part of the educationa component in CRS, but there s penty ese to be discerned: earning from key payers at mentoring sessions, getting personaized heath information in a free COPD screening or earning how to better utiize socia media to enhance the impact of a personaity. As taent increasingy connects with the audience both on-air and off, it becomes more important for them to be rea, honest, fawed peope, according to iheartmedia vp taent deveopment Dennis Cark, one of three peope on a Feb. 10 coaching pane that incudes former Okahoma footba coach Barry Switzer. I ve worked with a ot of shows that have kind of created their characters and they got found out on socia media Oh, he s not reay married, he s been divorced for two years, says Cark. Nowadays you have to be 100 percent authentic or you re going to be found out, and it s going to be a brand destroyer. That s reay the underying goa at CRS to make sure broadcasting s brand is protected, and much of the mission in 2016 is focused on the peope part of that equation. In the 20 years since the Teecommunications Act set off a wave of consoidation, the number of radio jobs has pummeted. Exacty how many jobs have been ost, notes CRB executive director Bi Mayne, is a piece of data that has never been pubicy reveaed. But as numbersdriven as radio is, it s sti a medium that hinges on an individua istener making an emotiona connection to the music and the peope on the other end of that signa. We re in a word that s run argey by pubicy hed companies, and their priority is sharehoder vaue, says Mayne. But I sti beieve the most vauabe asset in any company are the peope. The peope make the product, and the peope are the ones that execute the product, and unfortunatey that gets forgotten. No doubt that s true in some boardrooms. But they be top of mind at CRS. Action began to pick up for Stapeton after the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) on Nov. 4, 2015, when he won tripe honors: mae vocaist, new artist and abum of the year, the attermost for his first set, Traveer (Mercury/ Universa Music Group Nashvie). He and Justin Timberake aso gave what many consider to be the definitive performance of the night with Traveer track Tennessee Whiskey and Timberake s Drink You Away (from the atter s The 20/20 Experience, 2 of 2). Now, Stapeton boasts four nominations for the Grammy Awards, which CBS wi broadcast ive on Feb. 15 beginning STAPLETON at 8 p.m. ET. Traveer is competing in the a-genre abum of the year category, as we as for best country abum, whie Stapeton is aso up for best country soo performance and best country song for the set s tite track. After debuting on Biboard s Top Country Abums chart dated May 23, 2015, at No. 2 with 27,000 sod, according to Niesen Music, Traveer remained in the ist s top 40 for its first six months (26 weeks) before vauting 25-1 after the CMAs, on the chart dated Nov. 21 (153,000; up a whopping 6,412 percent). Additionay, the set became the first ever to re-enter the Biboard 200 at No. 1. To date the abum has sod 830,000 copies. The LP ogs its 12th week at No. 1 on Top Country Abums (dated Feb. 20) (27,000, down 3 percent). On Country Airpay, Traveer singe Nobody to Bame ifts (20 miion audience impressions, up 10 percent). Mercury vp promotion Damon Mobery beieves that much of Stapeton s success is due to a continuing buid-out since the CMAs. His performance was obviousy a watershed moment that we needed to take advantage of, he tes Biboard. He was unknown to many unti the show. Since then, there s just been an ongoing discovery. He s aso been presenting his abum as a compete body of work when he makes media appearances, so he won t perform just the singe. For instance, he payed Parachute on Saturday Night Live [on Jan. 16]. With radio, I think a ot of programmers wanted to pay him previousy and just fet a itte more confident after the CMAs. Stapeton s taent is undeniabe, adds WXTU Phiadephia PD Shey Easton. His voice resonates, which is what music is intended to do for the istener. It s ike the music actuay fows through him and, in turn, it draws us in. OH MAN On Hot Country Songs, Thomas Rhett s ove song Die a Happy Man (Vaory) continues its reign, ranking at the summit for a 13th week (and seventh consecutivey). Man moves into a tie for seventh pace for the most weeks at No. 1 on the survey with Ray Price s 1958 smash City Lights and Litte Big Town s Gir Crush, which reached No. 1 on the May 9, 2015, chart. Speaking of Crush, the song is nominated for three Grammy Awards, incuding the song of the year. It s aso up for best country song and best country duo/group performance, and its parent abum, Pain Kier, is nominated for best country abum. GO, HOME Luke Bryan s Home Aone Tonight (Capito Nashvie), featuring Litte Big Town s Karen Fairchid, tops Country Airpay for a second week, growing by 3 percent to 49.6 miion audience impressions. On Hot Country Songs, the track paces at its No. 3 high for a fifth week. ZAC ZOOMS Lasty, Country Airpay wecomes a new top 10 as Zac Brown Band s Beautifu Drug (Southern Ground/John Varvatos/Dot) pushes 11-9 (32 miion in audience, up 12 percent). Drug is the third country singe from Jeky + Hyde, foowing Homegrown (No. 1 for three weeks beginning Apri 11, 2015) and Loving You Easy (No. 1, Aug. 29). ZBB scores its 16th Country Airpay top 10. In the chart s 26-year history, among groups of at east three members, its top 10 count trais ony those of Rasca Fatts (29), Aabama (24), Diamond Rio (19) and Lonestar (18). He sat down with Biboard to discuss the 2016 Country Radio Seminar (running Feb in Nashvie), offering his perspective from both the CRB as we as the abes he eads (Capito, EMI, MCA and Mercury). You have spent a ong time on the CRB s executive committee. Pease expain your roe and the mission of the organization. The CRB is a trade organization [formed in 1969] unike any other because we devote ourseves competey to country radio. I don t think any other format has an association ike ours; it s quite unique. Those of us who serve take great pride in what we do and that we actuay get things done. [The CRB mission statement reads, We bring country radio broadcasters together to enhance skis, faciitate business, promote the growth of the industry and embrace changing technoogies. ] Why is it important to you to serve on the CRB board? I took over Capito as president in 2003 and was anxious to DUNGAN estabish mysef as a abe president after eaving Arista/Nashvie [as senior vp/gm]. I got a ca from the CRB asking me if I woud consider heping, because they never had a president of a abe on the board. I did it to get a itte coser to the industry and serve... Fifteen years ater, I have no intention of giving up my seat. About CRS move to the Omni: Did you have ampe time to set it up or was it frantic after finding out the former downtown convention center woud no onger be avaiabe? It was very quick and, honesty, amost a disaster ast year. The former Nashvie Convention Center was paired with the Renaissance Hote, and it was perfect for this-size seminar. We found out in the summer of 2014 that we woud no onger be abe to use those faciities and prompty went into panic mode. We met with the mayor and other foks invoved and actuay taked them into deaying construction so we coud proceed with CRS 2015 and not have to compete with the sound of jackhammers during the convention. It s ikey that many peope don t know why CRS is starting on the day after the Super Bow. Was it a space issue? It s not exacty idea to start your first seminar at a new venue... on Super Bow Sunday night. We thought about that, that we d be interrupting peope s ives. Something ese that peope may not know: It s a one-year fix. We be back on our norma timetabe for 2017, starting on a Wednesday and going through Friday. Even with the scheduing changes, the convention is doing great numbers. Why do you think CRS continues to thrive? Technoogy pays a big part. There are so many opportunities avaiabe to radio stations, but they need to be here to keep up with trends and new technoogy patforms that are avaiabe. It s aso about the sharing of ideas; sma-market peope earn from medium-market foks; medium-market peope absorb ideas from those in arger markets, and so on. It now seems to be more of a chaenge for a radio programmer to attend CRS. Years ago, companies woud pay the tab, which is not the case anymore. The way radio is structured corporatey now has made it a rea chaenge. Severa years ago we noticed that a ot of group heads and genera managers were from other formats and not famiiar with CRS. We took time to visit executives and convince them to come to CRS. We wanted to make sure that a PD in a pace ike, say, Des Moines [Iowa], woud sti be abe to attend. What happened was, the executive woud go back after CRS, knowing how great of an event it was, and then aow his or her peope to come the foowing year. That s not the case everywhere, of course. I m fuy aware that, in many cases, the programmer is paying. For that reason we ve not raised the price of CRS registration in 10 years. What does the future of CRS ook ike? How does it continue to remain reevant? The future ooks great because technoogy changes so much that you need to be here just to keep up. If you take your eye off the ba for one second, you get behind. As for surviva, we re in great shape. These things are expensive, so we have to hit certain economic threshods. We re a nonprofit; we re not in it to make money. But, yeah, we re doing just fine. Has the CRS agenda evoved to stay current? That s a definite yes. We ve had an infux of new peope on the agenda committee with new ideas, and that has been reay beneficia. Most importanty, the peope that serve on the agenda committee work reay hard. Their dedication is pretty remarkabe. From your position at UMGN, without giving specifics, is there a direct pan for what you re going to accompish each year at CRS and the artists on which you focus? Yes. In fact, we start working about a year ahead of time. We ook at what artists we want to get in front of peope and take advantage of that audience. Sometimes it wi be a new act or someone that we want to take to the next eve, or simpy reintroduce an artist. We put a ot of thought into what we want to accompish. UMGN stages the yeary Ryman show that has turned into a big event, and you get to feature many acts. Can you point to an artist and say that success afterward came from a specific CRS moment? One of my best memories is when I first came from Arista to Capito and was anxious to move into the 2004 CRS and do something specia. Because of timing, by the time I joined the abe it was ate, so we were shut out of the specific CRS-sponsored uncheons. But, thankfuy, one opened up. Keith Urban was at a crucia point. His second abum [Goden Road] had taken off strongy and he had aready estabished a reputation for his incredibe concerts... his shows are so exceptiona that we wanted peope to observe that. We thought that once peope got it, he d go to that next eve, and even become an automatic. His then-new track was the fourth singe from the abum, You Think of Me. When we heard it internay, we thought, Great song, but maybe not country enough to be a singe. We, his show that day was one of those magica moments where you coud ook around the room and fee how magnetic it was. It was eectrifying. Waking out afterward, iteray every 20 feet someone woud stop me and te me that they were from a custer that aso had an AC station and they were going to start spinning the song on both their country and pop stations. [The baad spent two weeks atop Hot Country Songs and peaked at No. 2 on Adut Contemporary.] As for the Ryman show, it has gotten bigger and bigger, and there s a buzz surrounding the affair. There have been some great moments, ike when Kacey Musgraves did Merry Go Round and got a standing ovation. The same happened with Mickey Guyton. The ony thing I know for sure about this year s show is that something extraordinary wi happen and it wi be totay unexpected.

19 BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 8, 2016 PAGE 19 OF 25 MAKIN TRACKS TOM ROLAND Brandy Cark Asserts Hersef In Gir Next Door PAMELA LITTKY When Brandy Cark was a finaist a year ago for best new artist and best country abum at the Grammy Awards, it ikey shocked a ot of country fans she had gotten minima airpay for her abum 12 Stories, and it s a sure bet that most of the genre s isteners had no idea who she was. The industry oved her, and particuary appreciated the traditiona stye that the abum represented. Underscoring that support, a year ater, one of the abum s baads, Hod My Hand, is up for the best country song Grammy on Feb. 15, even though it never made it into the mainstream. Against that backdrop comes Gir Next Door, the first singe from Cark s forthcoming sophomore abum, Big Day in a Sma Town. The song represents both a yrica connection to her recorded past and a sonic departure from it. The attitude of Gir Next Door mirrors that of her debut singe, Stripes. In both cases, the singer is standing up to an inappropriate over. Cementing the simiarities, both songs find her so angry that she has to restrain hersef from committing a crimina act that woud and her in jai. But the sound of Gir Next Door defies styistic expectations. Instead of framing her as a throwback singer-songwriter, it CLARK casts her as a current, edgy artist with a cever wit. Big Day in a Sma Town was produced by Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Cage the Eephant), and the mash-up of foky storyteer and boundary-pushing studio guru puts a more aggressive spin on her music. It aso gives her a better shot at a commercia breakthrough. I didn t want to try to make the same record, says Cark. I m so proud of 12 Stories, and I knew that if I tried to do something exacty ike it, it just woudn t be good. It woud be stagnant. And I woud rather make something that is different. I aways want to grow as an artist, and I woud rather do that and fa on my face than try to do the same thing and just stay where I am. Gir Next Door owes its existence to the ex-boyfriend of co-writer Jessie Jo Dion ( The Breath You Take ). Foowing an argument, Dion carped to Cark about the tiff on the phone: If he wants the gir next door, go next door! As soon as she burted it out, both writers saw the phrase as a potentia hook. Cark and songwriter Shane McAnay ( Break Up in a Sma Town, Stay a Litte Longer ) were up to their ears in work on Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musica, a production that payed ast fa at the Daas Theater Center. But Gir Next Door was such a great idea that they took a day away from Hee Haw to write it with Dion. Whie Cark didn t necessariy see hersef as the artist who woud record it, her personaity was at east part of the inspiration for Dion. I was thinking about mysef, for sure, as a woman in the song, but I was thinking about Brandy a ot, too, says Dion. She in her own way is just, This is me, take it or eave it. I ove that, and we re simiar in that way. With Gir Next Door estabished as the finish ine in the chorus, they started at the top of the song, keyed by an acoustic guitar riff that Cark introduced. They referenced a handfu of perfect-woman stereotypes Debbie debutante, a Barbie do and Brady Bunch character Marcia Brady as the singer battes Stepford Wives conformity with verba, femae aggression. We re taking about a character who s on the verge [of expoding], as opposed to aready having gone and keyed a car and carved her name [ike] in Before He Cheats, which is the utimate of those songs, says McAnay. Once you ve done that, you ve got to find a new way to do it. They seaed the dea in the chorus with a Virgin Mary metaphor ine that a of them debated. Cark thought metaphor might be too cerebra for a country song, whie Dion and McAnay feared the reigious imagery might be too controversia. That didn t sway Cark in the east. We woud ve had to change that probaby for anybody ese, notes McAnay. And to me, that s the best ine. When they arrived at the go next door payoff, McAnay served up a surprise post-chorus chant Go next door, and go right now/ Don t ook back, don t turn around that extended the theme past the expected finish ine. The writing went fast, and they came back a coupe of days ater to shore up the first verse. McAnay produced a demo that the musicians naied on the first take, and the song got shopped around on Music Row, with Litte Big Town nibbing but never quite caiming it. Utimatey, Cark started thinking of Gir Next Door as her song, and she took it into Joyce s St. Chares Studio in East Nashvie, where it gained an even more aggressive texture during five days of rehearsa for the abum. They recorded for a coupe of days, then Joyce burrowed into the songs aone for another nine days before Cark heard the resuts. He s such an artist himsef and needs time to just create on his own, says Cark. When they turned in the abum to Warner Bros. Los Angees division, Warner president Dan McCarro accepted the entire project except Gir Next Door, which he thought needed more work. Joyce gave it a new, amostdisco bassine and changed a coupe of other things around it. Then Cark went in to re-sing it, matching its new energy eve whie envisioning it as a feisty message about determining her own direction as an artist. The song is about a woman teing a guy, I can t change who I am. That s what you thought was coo about me, she says. But for me to reay inhabit the song, it has more meaning [with] the music business. McAnay and Morgane Stapeton added background vocas, and the new version was such an improvement that Gir Next Door became the first singe. Warner Music Nashvie shipped it to radio through Pay MPE on Jan. 22 with a Feb. 16 add date. More than a year since they wrote it, Dion has moved on from the boyfriend that inspired Gir Next Door shocking, she says sarcasticay. He woud probaby get off on that, knowing it was about him, she adds. I haven t tod him, but maybe I shoud at the No. 1 party. Cark isn t making such bod chart predictions, but she s cautiousy optimistic that her rea-woman dismissa of Marcia Brady- and Virgin Maryeve perfection might push her a itte further into the mainstream than she got with 12 Stories and Stripes. I wanted [this abum] to be great, says Cark. I didn t want to just be nominated for best new artist at the Grammys and then nobody ever hear from me again.

But it aso is a three-day party that has earned a reputation as in the words of Entercom/San Diego operations director Kevin Caahan the iver Oympics. As we dive into this year s event, taking pace Feb. 8 to 10 at Nashvie s Omni Hote, we re reminded of some of the funniest and most memorabe moments from past seminars. Unquestionaby the most egendary CRS story happened in 2001 at the Bridge Bar, the centra meeting pace of the seminar s former hote home, the Renaissance Nashvie. A seminar attendee in a room overooking the bar was enjoying an, er, private moment with his room curtains opened, not reaizing that his image was refected onto the bar s gass ceiing for a to see. When the officia CRS biography is reeased, I m sure an entire chapter wi be devoted to the story of the guy, servicing himsef in his hote room, in fu view of the bar, says KZSN Wichita, Kan., PD Brian Jennings. It s ike Woodstock everyone caims to have been there. It has become mythoogy. The foowing year, both Bake Sheton and Rasca Fatts spoofed the event (Sheton most memoraby, with a comica video that incuded a porn-stye music bed and a strategicay paced guitar) in the intro cips they shot for their performances at the seminar s New Faces show. It s not the ony CRS story that invoves nudity. One year Tanya Tucker made a surprise appearance at an Epic Records showcase in Nashvie s Printer s Aey, and whie onstage fashed her breasts to the very surprised crowd. New Revoution s Rob Daton, then Epic s vp promotion, recas the scene at the Bourbon Street Bues and Boogie Bar. Joe Diffie, Coin Raye and Ty Herndon were singing od country songs when in waks Tanya and [TV journaist] Stone Phiips, who was doing a piece on her. She jumped up onstage actuay jumped up on Coin s back ike a horse. At first it was awesome; they were a singing together and it was a fantastic moment. Then, things went south. It was very ate and it was pretty rowdy. There were some suggestions from the crowd about showing her [breasts] and she obiged. By the next morning, Epic promotion staffers were waking around the seminar wearing newy printed T-shirts that read, Capito has her hits. Epic has her t. Says Daton, Got to ove CRS. Radio consutant Jaye Abright describes another CRS event that had a surprising ending. Back in the 1970s, working records was a very different game in many ways, she says. I remember one situation off campus at CRS back then that woud make today s promotion job ook ike being a bank president. RCA was the first abe, I beieve, to create its own event. For severa years, they fied one of the Music Row-area French restaurants with radio peope, pus one promo person per tabe for a ovey amost forma dinner. Over severa years the event became increasingy strange, starting one year with a food fight. The next, there was a mock wedding between two RCA promo staffers that escaated into what had to be amost tota destruction of the banquet room housing the event... Things get fun, crazy and competitive at CRS, but to my knowedge ony one five-star restaurant has ever been trashed. RCA Labe Group ater moved its annua CRS dinner to the Genera Jackson showboat, and in that spirit of competition cited by Abright, one year the RCA From eft: UMG Gobetrotters Rocco Cosco, John Ettinger, Royce Risser (in background), Joe Putnam and Damon Mobery. boat was met at the dock by a marching band hired by riva MCA Nashvie. One rep ended the night running around wearing his white tighties on his head. Crazy night. EMI Records Mike Krinik, who previousy worked in radio, recas Mercury s annua frat house [hospitaity] suite beer pong, packed asses and ebows, security aways came up and somehow or another [then- Mercury vp promotion] Michae Powers aways taked his way out of it. One year, Krinik remembers, severa of the Universa Music Group promotion team arrived at the party costumed as the UMG Gobetrotters (see photo). UMG senior vp promotion Royce Risser recas having the band Sons of the Desert performing in the MCA Nashvie suite at the Renaissance. Labe reps hung a arge Sons of the Desert neon sign on the hote room wa and paid to fix the giant hoe in the wa ater. But this I never forget, says Risser. The baad crossed to a No. 8 Biboard Hot 100 peak and ed to Smith s one Grammy Award, for best femae country voca performance. Kristofferson was inspired to write the yrics after Frank Sinatra, when asked in an Esquire interview what he beieved in, repied: Booze, broads or a Bibe... whatever heps me make it through the night. The Caifornia-born Smith eft schoo at age 11 to pursue singing and by 15 was in her first of three marriages, to stee guitarist Bobby White. She became one of the few women accepted in the 1970s outaw country movement, supported by her friends Wiie Neson and Wayon Jennings, and charted 20 top 40 Hot Country Songs hits. By the 80s, Smith was iving in Arizona and heping Native American causes, even starting a band caed Apache Spirit. She died in 2005 at 61 from emphysema.
