Radio s pace in the entertainment andscape provided a centra topic for many of the educationa panes at the 48th annua Country Radio Seminar in Nashvie Feb , and its diemma was underscored by two of the artists programmed for keynote question-andanswer sessions. Garth Brooks and Toby Keith, both of whom scored their first hit singes more than two decades ago, are ikewise estabished acts who find newer, fresher performers anging for the space they ve ong occupied on payists and in concert has. BROOKS Getting the dea, Brooks tod a younger artist at the cose of his session, isn t one-thousandth as hard as keeping the dea. The batte between radio and new tech was repeatedy hammered on during the seminar. Since the introduction of the iphone 10 years ago, the smartphone has become a ubiquitous device, simiar in size as Edison Research president Larry Rosin pointed out during a pane on The Mobiization of Country Radio to the once- dominant transistor radio. When producer Scott Hendricks (Bake Sheton, Michae Ray) voiced second thoughts about the nuances in a Dan + Shay recording session on Nov. 30, 2016, the feedback was ironic. Hendricks and co-producer Dan Smyers, of Dan + Shay, were trying to get the right arrangement for When I Pray for You. They were targeting the soundtrack for a movie The Shack, in theaters March 3 so some drama was appropriate. They d aready found ways to heighten the emotiona arc whie the Biboard Country Update was observing from the contro room in the back studio at Nashvie s Sound Stage. Keyboard payer Charie Judge concocted a syncopated signature ick for the intro, drummer Nir Z found moments for anticipatory cymba swes, and the entire ensembe had figured out how to maximize the suspense in a diminished chord two-thirds into the chorus. But when they tried to insert two extra beats before the fina chorus, mimicking a trick Goo Goo Dos used in Iris, Hendricks fet they had crossed a ine. We re trying too hard, he protested a second time. Dan + Shay and their supporting cast woud strike a baance before it was a over, but it was important not to overoad When I Pray for You with emotiona tricks, since the song had drama buit into it from the beginning. Lead singer Shay Mooney and his fiancee, Hannah Biingsey, were expecting their first chid when it was written ast fa, and they had months ahead DAN + SHAY of them to guess, wait and wonder how their ives woud soon be atered. Shay having a kid, he has a these thoughts and emotions and different tites and concepts and ideas foating around, says Smyers. A schedue change brought one of those ideas into focus when the aforementioned Ray had to cance a songwriting session at the Word Entertainment office of songwriter Justin Ebach ( Seep Without You ). Dan + Shay caimed the opening with Ebach and Jon Nite ( Noise, Strip It Down), both of whom have young chidren of their own. So when Mooney s unborn chid came up in conversation, there was penty of empathy in the room for a scenario in which the father-to-be often fees ike an outsider. You can t have morning sickness for your wife, you can t get swoen feet for your wife, you can t be uncomfortabe for her, says Ebach. The ony thing you can do is provide for those needs get her water, hep her with aundry and physica things ike that. As far as doing anything for the baby, you re a itte hepess, but I think that s where the prayer thing comes in. That s one of the few things you actuay can do as a dad. Their discussion in the writing room ed to When I Pray for You, a father s attempt at bonding, with the concept aid out in the opening ines: I tak to God about you/and I ain t even met you yet. Entering unknown territory without an instruction manua, the first-time father typicay ponders peope he knows who ve gone down the same path, and that usuay eads to refections about his own parents. The writers brought that into focus with an extra, two-ine pre-chorus at the end of the first verse, as Mooney sings, I want to be the dad that my dad was. We a have dads that are pretty pivota in our ives, says Ebach. Looking back now that you re a itte oder, you re ike, My parents had no cue what they were doing, but they did a right. That section ed straight to a rangy chorus that soars higher than Nashvie songwriters woud create in typica situations. But having Mooney avaiabe to sing it widened the possibiities. I write with artists a the time, and you don t get to write meodies ike When I Pray for You too often, says Ebach. If you write a meody ike that, you ve [ony] got about two paces to go with that pitch. They wrote two verses and a chorus that day and put together a simpe demo, repeating yrics from the first verse as a pacehoder for what woud become the bridge. In the next week or two, Dan + Shay were coincidentay invited to view The Shack in Los Angees and record something for consideration on the soundtrack. Smyers captured key scenes from the picture on his smartphone, convinced that they coud shape When I Pray for You for the fim s story. I was trying to take notes of overapping themes [between] the song and what was happening in the movie, says Smyers. There were a ot of phrases that were ike a yric that we aready had. It was kind of too good to be true. The faith-based picture provided the key to the unfinished bridge. They utimatey used it to recast the ast chorus, aowing the advice the father was giving to his chid to become advice that God was giving to Dad. It s this moment of receiving the wisdom versus giving the wisdom, says Smyers. Once the bridge got finished, they had to act quicky to get considered for the Atantic soundtrack, so Judge, Nir Z, bass payer Jimmie Lee Soas and guitarists Derek Wes and Bryan Sutton convened to record the track. A the parts utimatey ead to that diminished chord in the chorus as Mooney sings get down on your knees. Hed for two beats, it sets up the hook as the song s resoution. That chord is ike the 90s-country move, says Smyers. So many songs in 90s country especiay a ot of the baads did that. It creates a great moment of tension and reease. Mastering was the fina step, and as that process unfoded, Hendricks found a different dramatic move for the spot where they had toyed with the Iris - ike extra beats. With Smyers approva, he siced the first three words I pray you off the start of the fina chorus. It gave the song meodic space and emphasized that God was now giving advice to Dad as he moves into this new phase of his ife. That s the dramatic pause that we were trying to figure out in the studio, says Hendricks. Taking those three notes off makes a the difference in the word. When I Pray for You made the soundtrack, creating a great persona twist for Nite. It bew my mind, he says. I was given The Shack paperback by my dad a few years ago and read it through in one up-a-night reading session. The underying themes of the book, and now the movie, were the themes underneath our song. Ten days after Mooney s son, Asher James Mooney, arrived, Warner Music Nashvie issued Pray as a singe on Feb. 3, even though the duo s midtempo How Not To was sti ascending. The abe decided to treat it simiary to Rasca Fatts 2006 scenario, when the parenta baad My Wish and a track from Cars, Life Is a Highway, both reached the top 20, with My Wish utimatey cimbing to No. 1. How Not To is currenty at No. 24 on Hot Country Songs and No. 22 on Country Airpay. When I Pray for You is making inroads at Christian radio as the abe simutaneousy works it to streaming partners and country broadcasters. We re trying to get How Not To to the top of the charts, says Smyers. It s not the conventiona method of what happens on country radio, but if we can figure out a way to have two songs on the charts, however the timing of that works, that s the utimate goa: to expose our music to as many peope as possibe. But for both Sykes and the company s nationa programming group president, Tom Poeman, that joke is more true than not. Says Poeman, You re never going to have a moment where you re not on the cock [at iheart], but we a signed up for that because we ove what we do. That dedication recenty earned the men, aong with top boss Bob Pittman, a spot on Biboard s 2017 Power 100 ist. With more than 850 radio stations, seven annua ive events that air as network TV specias (incuding the iheart Country Festiva), and the January aunch of two new digita subscription services, iheart Radio Pus and A Access, there is penty to keep iheart staffers that busy. Says Poeman, who is heaviy invoved with the company s music discovery and emerging artist initiatives, incuding the Artist Integration and On the Verge programs, I ook at the iheart patform as the utimate music payground. And not ony do I get to pay on it, but everybody in the music industry gets to pay on it. Why did the company want to be in the subscription service space? Sykes There are some great subscription services that are out there aready that are reay buit on someone s record coection. What makes iheart Radio A Access different is we re buit on expanding the radio istening experience. The beauty of our service is that if you re istening to a song on iheart Radio and you don t know who it is, you can push a button and that song goes right to your payist. You no onger have to find out who it is, write the name down and go type in a name and buid your subscription base. When I was watching this service being deveoped here, it was one of the oh wow moments of my ife in music. SYKES What does it say about the heath of radio itsef that companies ike yours are entering so many other areas besides over-theair broadcasting? Sykes We can use that core [radio] business as a turbine to drive us into teevision, digita and now subscription because there s no better POLEMAN way to se something or create awareness than radio. So we use it ourseves to create and drive awareness on our new products internay. This cassic, traditiona medium has provided the everage and the power for us to aunch modern new businesses that are keeping us reevant to the cuture From the outside, [iheart] may be perceived as a radio company that s been around for years, but it fees ike we re in Siicon Vaey here. What are some of the professiona accompishments at iheart you are most proud of? Sykes In the ast six years, we went from becoming just a pure radio company to becoming a rea bona fide media payer. We now have seven network teevision shows that are a everaged off of iheart Radio. They re a created from iheart Radio events and driven by and promoted by iheart Radio stations across the country. I don t think any [other] patform has that much music representation on network teevision. Tom, you have one of the top programming gigs in the country. What are some of the key components of your job? Poeman What I try to do is hep a those oca programmers and those oca stations be as competitive as they can be with a the resources that a company ike iheart can provide. That s a huge part of it. Aso under my umbrea is artist reations, so a big part of my job is heping artists, managers and abes navigate the iheart Radio music deveopment ecosystem. We have so many different toos that peope can use because we have such massive reach As the artist wins, so do the radio stations, because they are such a big part of our product. That s a ot of fun, being abe to [harness] the creativity of artists, managers, abes and the creativity of our program directors. [That] is where that magic reay starts to happen. What keeps you up at night? Poeman I ive in fear that the brand that I m working with or the toos that I have contro over somehow wi skip a beat if I m not aways on my game. You re aways worried that somebody s going to take on one of your radio stations or an event isn t going to come off the way you wanted it to. I think that s why our events are as good as they are and our stations are as good as they are, because the company is fu of peope that are aways worried, and they assume that things are going to go wrong, so they address that before they can go wrong. What one thing do you think can derai the music industry? Sykes The most powerfu esson that the industry earned was when it put its head in the sand back in the ate 90s when the digita patform started. It coud have transformed seamessy ike teevision has today from soft goods to digita distribution, and they buried their heads in the sand. It took a decade to recover. I think we shoud earn a esson from that, that as confusing and as scary as it can be, we a have to embrace disruption We have got to continue to embrace the things that confuse us, scare us, that take us into unknown territory.
