Buying, according to StopBuying.gov, is the repeated abuse of power to intimidate or BRADY demean the weaker person in a reationship, and it can be expressed in numerous ways. It has a rich history in country music, woven into such songs as Doy Parton s schooyard tae Coat of Many Coors, Johnny Paycheck s workpace fantasy Take This Job and Shove It and Martina McBride s interpersona dramas Independence Day, Concrete Ange and A Broken Wing. One coud argue that the voume of songs about country pride is a direct response to artists feeing that mainstream media has dismissed the genre for decades. Brown s Learning, in which he documents being beaten by a stepfather and ridicued by cassmates for his biracia heritage, is a powerfu modern exampe. And he suggests that treatment is part of what has made him a bit mysterious as an adut. He can be guarded in interviews, he says, as a protection thing. The nature of most journaism requires reporters to drop in for short bits of time with a subject, and that works against the kind of reationship Brown needs to overcome his chidhood programming. BROWN Domestic v ioence and domineering romantic reationships are subsets of buying. Baerini s new singe, Miss Me More, detais her persona resurrection from a reationship with an ex-boyfriend who insisted on controing her appearance and her friendships, and it has made her a roe mode for fans who have been known to confide in her about their own reationship stories at meet-and-greets. It s a common thing. That buying issue is part of what s at the heart of the eection on Nov. 6. The saughter of Jews in a Pittsburgh congregation; the Nazi march in Charottesvie, Va.; and the aeged abuse at the center of the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court controversy are a exampes of buying behaviors that have become more prevaent in pubic discourse. Voters wi be making a statement, at east in part, on that topic. It s not OK for anybody to be mean to anyone, and it goes for any ceebrity across the board, says Chris, who wi be recording a duet with New Kids on the Bock s Danny Wood on Nov. 7. Kids are watching, and there s so much junk on the internet and TV that kids are earning from. We need more artists and poiticians in the word who are good roe modes to the kids who are watching their every move. Buying behaviors inspired Underwood to write Love Wins. And the inspirationa phrases she voiced in the Disney #ChooseKindness campaign underscore the vaues behind country s heightened awareness of buies. There s so much negativity out there, she says. There s a miion different ways you can be mean, and we just need to buid each other up and be more toerant and more kind and think about other peope s feeings. Savior aso arrives at No. 2 on Top Christian Abums, marking the singer-songwriter s first appearance on the tay. I m foored. God is good, Turner tes Biboard. I had no expectations going into this project, other than to make a record I was proud to share. I m especiay thankfu my fans have embraced it. Long Back Train, his second Hot Country Songs entry, and Me and God (which hit Nos. 13 and 16 in 2004 and 2007, respectivey), appear in updated versions on the new set. The buk of the abum features traditiona hymns, which Turner became famiiar with whie growing up in South Caroina, incuding How Great Thou Art (featuring Sonya Isaacs), Amazing Grace and Great Is Thy Faithfuness, pus the iconic I Saw the Light, penned by Hank Wiiams. The thought of doing this abum hadn t even come to me yet, and I was sti working on Deep South at the time, Turner recenty mused. When it came time to actuay record Savior, I wanted it to fee new, but aso have the fee of an od-time hymn. As things progressed, I wanted it to be the tite track. Everything just kind of fe into pace. I fet ike it was my time and, more importanty, that it was God s time. NEW TOP 10s On Hot Country Songs, which combines airpay, streaming and saes data, Maren Morris earns her fourth top 10 as Rich (Coumbia Nashvie) rises It gains by 5 percent to 30.7 miion audience impressions as it hods at its No. 5 high on Country Airpay. REAL COUNTRY SEEKS UNIQUENESS If the USA Network s Rea Country finds even one artist who is abe to jump the numerous hurdes that bock them from stardom, the show wi have accompished its goa. The series debuts Nov. 13 with Shania Twain among the executive producers. Twenty-one artists in various stages of deveopment vie for a grand- prize package that incudes $100,000 and a performance at the Grand Oe Opry. Among the competitors are six-time Texas Regiona Radio femae vocaist of the year Bri Bagwe; Jamie Foyd, co-writer of the Grammy-nominated The Bade ; and Tony Jackson, who has been heaviy advertised on RFD-TV. I think we can do more for them as artists on the pane. USA Network has had previous success in country taent competitions. Nashvie Star, introduced in 2003, provided an eary showcase for Miranda Lambert, Chris Young and Kacey Musgraves, though each of them deveoped in different ways after that experience. That s the beauty of this business, says Rea Country paneist Jake Owen. You can hope and you can dream, but nobody has a road map. Taped at Nashvie s Municipa Auditorium, the Rea Country set takes on a bingy, honky-tonk atmosphere. There is no pre-set notion of who might succeed Twain designed the show to encompass everything from traditiona country to modern bro-country, putting the emphasis on individuaity. She did not anticipate that that direction woud be down. A ot of peope expected that I woud turn around and have a record dea, and have opportunities, and be reeasing new music, and a these things were going to come together for me instanty, she recas. The beief was that I woud be abe to buid off of this reay great stepping stone that I had with Goriana, and REINERT that just wasn t the case. Instead, Reinert fet shut out. She had a difficut time booking songwriting appointments, and peope she thought were friends didn t respond to her emais. New artists popped up amost daiy and seemed to vaut past her. She went more than two years without paying a ive show, and she eventuay had to se her house. Meanwhie, Reinert frequenty read notes on socia media from fans who thought she had quit the business entirey. Somehow, the career she desperatey wanted seemed to be sipping out of her orbit and for reasons she coudn t quite grasp. I was, she says, super, super frustrated. The pressure was astronomica, but that aso yieded a rather prophetic creative masterpiece. Dark Star, written in the spring of 2017, encapsuates a the angst and mystery of her position whie maintaining a ray of optimism that the downtime she experienced is exacty what she required. I had this whirwind ife from 18 to 26, and I didn t reay know strugge, she notes. Not to this degree. I fee ike I reate to peope on such a deeper eve now, and this normacy I ve experienced over the ast three years has had such a huge impact on me [not ony] as a person, but aso as a songwriter. Dark Star came from exporing her story with co-writers k.s. Rhoads and Joe Pisapia on a day when they a were atching onto bittersweet musica sources: the fragiity of Nei Young s Harvest Moon, the rainy-day pop of Nashvie band The Siver Seas, the moody swir of Feetwood Mac s Dreams and Rhiannon, and the anguid meanchoy of Chris Isaak s Wicked Game. That track creates a whoe word of a genre that I aspire to in one song, says Pisapia of Wicked Game. Pisapia had simiary eft a band, adut-aternative act Guster, after eight years, and his affinity for Reinert s situation heped bring her issues and her emotiona state into focus. I was fired up that day, says Reinert. It kind of turned into this whoe thing of me taking about how I fee ike I m just faing through the atmosphere right now. That ed to gaaxian metaphors and eventuay to a recognition that she had become a dark star, a caudron of energy who was producing ight that the pubic simpy had yet to see. That feeing of starting over is universa, observes Rhoads. We can a fee that. And then a question when you re writing a song is, how particuar do you get? I ike to get away from [the rea-ife premise] just enough that you can te a story and everybody ese can appy their own story to it. The opening ine I m not scared of the unknown was a note from Reinert to hersef, and the rest of the yrics expored some of the particuar fears that accompany fame and egacy: Wi I be forgotten? Perhaps worse, wi I be remembered differenty than I want to be? There s just so much pressure on artists to be OK, what now? What s next? especiay coming out of that word that she was in, where you re reay geared toward the Top of the Pops kind of thing, says Pisapia. That s reay scary to kind of go back to the reinvention phase. It s ike, I m over here. You can t see me, but I m sti here, and I m going to be better than ever. Whie the Dark Star verses auded to her emotiona state, the chorus embraced the uminous possibiities in semi-gaactic terminoogy. It featured ong notes that emphasized the purity of Reinert s voice a carity akin to previous country hitmakers Suzy Bogguss and Jennifer Hanson whie moving across a chord structure (beginning with a one chord and moving to a five-minor) that embraced the haunting uncertainty. They pued together the demo in unison, and Reinert and Rhoads worked further on the ead voca and ush, tension-fied harmonies whie Pisapia took off on a vacation. We wanted four-part harmonies where certain notes are doing suspensions and sixths and things ike that, says Rhoads, sort of in the Feetwood Mac vein with reay thick harmonies on some parts. Producer Davis Naish was h i g h y respectfu of the demo, particuary those detaied harmonies. He and Reinert reconstructed them faithfuy on the master version, enhancing them with additiona performances to create a bit of a hypnotic choir effect. It s three-part harmony in every way possibe, and then I probaby had Rache do each part four times, so I woud say there s probaby anywhere from tracks of us, and some of those are us singing into the same mic together, so that s even more voices, says Naish. I truy just dissected what they did and then repeated it. It s a masterfu job of background vocas. Naish initiay repaced a banjo counter-meody from the demo with a more standard guitar, then had Rob McNeey switch it back to banjo when Reinert baked. That s a totay non-negotiabe item in this song, says Naish. Vioinist Eeonore Denig hid a pucky, six-piece string part in a handfu of creases, and McNeey aso threw in a short, curvy guitar section that provides a sight meodic detour in the back haf of the production. My reference for the song is George Harrison s My Sweet Lord, so I reay wanted a George Harrison moment to happen, and that ike fe in my ap, says Naish. That s the thing that reay tied a bow on it for me. Reinert s management, 333 Entertainment, aunched Dark Star to country radio via PayMPE on Oct. 9. It showcases the ringing expressiveness in her voice and finds acceptance in the uncertain periods that pock neary every ife. And with that message, it sets up a heaing connection between Reinert and the istener. There s no progress without that kind of strugge, she reasons. There s no breakthrough without the breakdowns. It makes me fee even more optimistic about my future.
