And as much as Music Row might hope his victory sparks a sea change, even Stapeton, in the midst of the confusing press room excitement at the awards, was coo enough to pay down expectations. The audience and the gatekeepers have their own eve of contro, and it wi be weeks and months before it s cear just how they weigh in. Two decades from now, when some currenty unknown country act pus a Stapeton/Krauss sort of upset, enough time wi have passed to know if the Gir Crush /Stapeton CMA showcase of 2015 was a tempate for a revoution in the genre or a reay big moment for a guy whose taent finay got recognized in the mainstream. According to Niesen, 13.6 miion viewers watched him win a three categories in which he was nominated and perform a medey with Justin Timberake. Stapeton won CMA trophies for mae vocaist of the year, new artist of the year and abum of the year, for Traveer (Mercury/ Universa Music Group Nashvie). Stapeton and Timberake sang Traveer track Tennessee Whiskey and Timberake s Drink You Away (from the atter s The 20/20 Experience, 2 of 2). After debuting on the Top Country Abums chart dated May 23 at No. 2 with 27,000 sod, according to Niesen Music, Stapeton s first set remained in the ist s top 40 for 25 more weeks. On the Nov. 21 chart, buoyed by his CMAs spotight, Traveer fies 25-1, up 6,412 percent from 2,000 sod to 153,000 in the week ending Nov. 5. On the Biboard 200, the LP is the first tite ever to re-enter at No. 1 (after it originay peaked at No. 14 upon its debut), bounding back with 177,000 equivaent abum units. Simiary, Stapeton scores his first Hot Country Songs No. 1 as Whiskey re-enters at the top (aso marking the first No. 1 re-entry on the tay). On Country Digita Songs, Whiskey returns at No. 1 (after a week at No. 44 in May), up from ess than 1,000 downoads sod to 131,000. The Traveer tite track aso debuts at No. 10 on Country Digita Songs (25,000) and No. 23 on Hot Country Songs. Despite his best new artist award, Stapeton, 37, has been a Nashvie presence for more than 15 years, earning status as a marquee songwriter by penning hits for other artists, such as Luke Bryan s Drink a Beer, Kenny Chesney s Never Wanted Nothing More and Thomas Rhett s Crash and Burn. As for Stapeton as an artist, country radio has been a minima factor, at east so far. His debut 2013 singe, What Are You Listening To, which was supported by a nationwide radio tour, peaked at No. 46 on Country Airpay. Second radio singe Traveer has not dented the chart. Performing rights organizations ASCAP and BMI hed this year s country songwriter awards Nov. 3 and Nov. 4, honoring the most-payed materia at a time when the vaue of those pays is being debated. Hunt took ASCAP s songwriter-artist of the year trophy and shared song of the year for Leave the Night On with Josh Osborne (Shane McAnay was aso a writer, but is not an ASCAP writer). Edredge and co-writers Ross Copperman and Heather Morgan took song of the year for Beat of the Music at BMI. Numerous facets of the craft of songwriting were on dispay between the two evenings. Mac McAnay s performance of Texas in My Rear View Mirror during the BMI Icon tribute to Davis focused on a detaied yric with a fu-circe discovery. 14 BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 9, 2015 PAGE 14 OF 20 MAKIN TRACKS TOM ROLAND Newcomer Ryan Kinder Gets Another Go-Round With Tonight When the Bigger Picture abe ost its financing and foded in May 2014, the obvious focus was on Craig Campbe, whose Keep Them Kisses Comin was at No. 11 on Country Airpay. The singe managed to reach No. 9 before it fickered out. Lost in the shuffe was Ryan Kinder, a singer-songwriter with an intense, urgent voca stye, who had just reeased the brooding Kiss Me When I m Down the prior month and was atop the New and Active chart as the abe impoded. The singe squeezed onto Country Airpay for one week in June 2014, KINDER just before the CMA Music Festiva, where Warner Music Nashvie president John Esposito and executive vp/gm Peter Strickand watched Kinder win over a bunde of femae fans who were argey unfamiiar with him. Seventeen months ater, Kinder s first WMN singe, Tonight, gives him a second shot at the commercia mainstream. It s not ony his second abe dea, but aso his second recording of Tonight, which was originay created during his tenure with, as he says sarcasticay, the abe that sha not be mentioned. Kinder, in fact, started working on the song with co-writer Luke Sheets at the Bigger Picture office in Nashvie s Berry Hi neighborhood in anticipation of a recording session with producer Keith Stega (Zac Brown Band, Aan Jackson), the abe s chief creative officer. Stega was schedued as the third writer at the appointment, and Sheets was admittedy nervous, so he showed up eary to go over a few ideas with Kinder first. Kinder brought aong a few snippets he thought might be worth exporing. I came in with three separate meodies, thinking it was three separate songs, says Kinder. They re now the chorus for Tonight. Luke said, Let s mash them together. Genius. The resuts sounded angsty, notes Kinder, and he had a persona scenario that fit. He had seen on Facebook that a high-schoo girfriend was engaged, and though he no onger carried a torch for her, he was reminded of a period of time when neither was abe to competey et go. There was a time in coege where I was trying to keep that reationship together, and we woud keep caing each other ate at night and kind of poking at the wound, recas Kinder. We both were at faut for each other s pain. Stega was hed up at a denta appointment and had to cance, so Kinder and Sheets decided to save their work for another time and adjourned for beers at E Mariachi on Thompson Lane. Days ater, Sheets was inspired with yrics for the chorus and emaied them to Kinder, who dashed over. They finished the entire song in about an hour, beginning with a 3 a.m. phone ca much ike the guy in Lady Antebeum s Need You Now with the man conveying a bit of desperation. One of the things that we fet reay good about was the music, says Sheets. The yrics say he s hurting, but the music is saying he s gonna get through it, and I think the combination of those eements is what s making it work. Whereas if you were to just read the yrics, you re ike, This guy s gotta pu it together. The meody in those verses intentionay begins in a ower part of Kinder s register, aowing him to heighten the energy at the chorus. He aways wants every chorus to go as high as his voice can humany go, says Sheets, and I m aways ike, Dude, you re gonna have to sing this at 6 a.m. in Raeigh, North Caroina. The verses eft a big chunk of empty space between phrases, and they fied it with a revoving guitar riff on the work tape. But when they headed into the studio with Stega a few days ater, the producer suggested they make that part a itte more prominent, and it turned into a whoa-oh section sung in harmony that utimatey became a key part of the song. Stega aso speeded it up a touch to make it more radio-friendy. The cut was strong enough that when Kinder signed with WMN, the prevaiing wisdom was that it was a worthy singe. Kinder continued to deveop at Fusion Management, the same company that works with Lady A, and when Chares Keey cut his soo materia, Fusion founder Danie Mier suggested Kinder consider using the same producer, Pau Worey (Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride). Kinder was up for it; Worey had conditions. There were two voices that presented themseves to me in his earier stuff, says Worey. [One] was kind of soft, and I wasn t interested in it, but a of a sudden, there woud be this growing kind of raspy voice that I woud compare more to Dave Matthews. My idea was if he was interested in reay paying to that voice, that was rea interesting to me. The origina version of Tonight empoyed both aspects of Kinder s voice, reaching its tension when he hed out the tite in the chorus. Worey encouraged Kinder to appy that intensity throughout the song, and they both pushed the abe to et them rerecord it at Worey s studio, Shabby Road, using many of the same musicians that payed on Need You Now. They dropped the key a fu step, from C to B, which aowed Kinder to hit the grow even harder on the chorus. But unti we finished, I don t think anybody was totay committed to changing versions, Worey says. Much of the new version, incuding the buk of Kinder s voca, was cut on one of the first takes. Pianist Michae Rojas pays a key, three-note figure that Sheets had appied to Tonight from the beginning My piano parts are [simpe] because that s the ony way I can pay, says Sheets and drummer Chad Cromwe musced up the sound with anguar, precise fis. Bass payer Jimmie Lee Soas gave it a more spacious foundation that took the track, according to Kinder, in more of a Tom Petty direction. It s ike od-schoo stuff, recas Kinder. It fees ive, and we re a in the same room ooking at each other whie we re paying. Worey eventuay overdubbed a side guitar soo, and Kinder did his own background vocas with Sheets suppementing on some of the ower notes. WMN secured initia pay on SiriusXM s Highway channe, then reeased Tonight to terrestria radio via Pay MPE on Oct. 13. It s the first song to become a singe from about 200 tites that Sheets and Kinder co-wrote. And one that gives Kinder a second chance.

15 BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE NOVEMBER 9, 2015 PAGE 15 OF 20 THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK Whether At SiriusXM Or Spotify, Marks Mission Remains The Same: Supporting Country Music Acts When he joined SiriusXM five years ago after a 30-pus-year career in terrestria radio, John Marks quicky had to earn the distinct differences between the music that works over the air and the music sateite subscribers want to hear. In his job as senior director of country programming, he soon became known for having some of the best ears in the business, heping estabish severa artists on SiriusXM that went on to expode in popuarity at FM. Those taents incude Parmaee, Coe Swinde, Sam Hunt, Forida Georgia Line and Chase Rice. Now, he s doing it again. In the midst of what he describes as a fairy steep earning curve in his new roe as head of goba programming for country music at streaming service Spotify, Marks is curating payists whie discovering not ony what streaming audiences respond to best, but aso what fans of country music outside the United States ike to hear. But it s precisey those things that drew him to the job, aong with what he says is Spotify s commitment to country music and to Nashvie. His new position was announced Nov. 2, about six weeks after his departure from SiriusXM. Like the abe s other Nashvie staffer, Copeand Isaacson, Marks is working from home. Another attractive eement of the gig was the opportunity to expose new and deveoping artists, a part of the job he oved at SiriusXM, even if it meant he was so sought-after that his voicemai and emai boxes were perpetuay maxed out. Whie that experience taught him much about how to jugge priorities, Marks says he aso earned that he coudn t do everything with everyone [who asked]. A I coud do was what I coud do, and I just had to be OK with that. Whie he often had to say no to peope, Marks says his priority was (and sti is) to simpy be as honest and straightforward as I can. I never succeeded fuy, I just tried to stay in as cose touch with peope as I coud, tried to be as responsive as possibe, and do what I coud to isten to the submissions [and] just treat peope with respect [and] understand that this is their ife. This is a dream and a ife pursuit. [I tried not to] forget that when you re working with whoever it may be, from the argest to the most beginning of artists, they a have that one thing in common, no matter where they are on the adder. I ike to do what I can to engage with them, to hep them move that dream forward, he continues, [but] that coud be a 24-hour job just sifting through music and ooking for taent, jugging between that and your day-to-day responsibiities for the peope who are paying your paycheck. Sti, he says, the successes he has had are the stuff that keeps me going. Just to watch these artists come into their own, gain some nationa notoriety, get signed to a abe it makes me happy and proud ike a parent I have friends for ife as a resut of it, and that means more to me than I can say. His new gig comes with other chaenges too. Whie Spotify has penty of support, some artists, incuding Tayor Swift and Jason Adean, have pued their music from the service because they are unhappy with the company s royaty payment mode. Whie Spotify has a dedicated abe reations team, abe and artist reations are aso part of Marks job description. Obviousy with the Adeans and Tayor Swifts of the word, everybody has varying opinions about royaties in genera, he says. That is not my word. A I can do is what I woud do every day in my previous [job, which] woud be to te anyone from the argest of the arge artists to the most deveoping of the new artists to be reachabe, searchabe, cickabe, viewabe, curatabe wherever you can possiby be, because it s an on-demand market To not be avaiabe in other paces probaby puts someone at a disadvantage with their audience and their market. That advice and that thought [pre-date] me being at Spotify, and I sti think that. Everybody has their perspective on what the right resut for them is, and I respect that, he adds. But I nonetheess woud suggest to anyone to be as visibe as you can be to your market. That just generates more saes, more interest, more doars. To be cosed to a certain eement of that is not a good idea. His September departure from SiriusXM shocked the Nashvie music community, and an announcement citing persona reasons for his departure caused rippes of concern. Marks is humby apoogetic for that, and the fact that when the announcement was made he was out of pocket due to covering a concert for SiriusXM in Chicago and unabe to immediatey que the specuation. I got on Facebook when I got home and et as many peope know as quicky as I coud that [my] heath is fine, everything was good, he says. I m sorry that that created some consternation, because that wasn t the intent. In truth, he says, my time was competed with SiriusXM and I had just decided that it was time to move on, and that was that. There are a ot of good, taented, passionate peope that work there, but for me, it was time to take a itte pause and contempate new objectives. Just a few weeks into the new job, Marks has aready spent a week at Spotify s headquarters in Sweden, which he describes as a oose and I say oose in a compimentary way cuture of peope It s just a very reaxed yet intense atmosphere. As he got to know his feow programmers Marks aso picked up on a reay soid esprit de corps among these disparate groups of individuas from a over the word. As impressed as he is with the staff, he s equay excited by the company s data resources, which aow empoyees to watch how songs and music perform in rea time. Another seing point for Marks was the opportunity to open country music up to audiences in other markets across the word that haven t had a ot of exposure to it, as we as potentiay exposing internationa country acts to U.S. audiences. The consumer is driving a of this, he says of Spotify s growth. The consumer wants streaming services. The consumer wants on-demand music, and it s the smart businesses who provide that. That s what brought me to Spotify. We re in an on-demand word, and I want to be a part of heping to set that up on behaf of country music. Written by Danny Wes and Dana Hunt, it became Strait s 28th No. 1 of a record 44 to date on the survey. Check Yes or No made a great impact beyond a No. 1 chart rank: A year ater, it earned Strait his first Country Music Association singe of the year award; he d win again in 2008 for I Saw God Today.
