CNN repeatedy showed footage of a pane that had crashed into Otay Mountain outside San Diego eary that morning. Eight members of Reba McEntire s band and crew died as a resut, and 25 years ater, it s sti difficut for many who were part of the team to tak about. One of McEntire s cosest confidantes at the time coudn t stop taking about it the day of the disaster. Aiance Media Reations owner Jennifer Boher was the pubicist for McEntire s Starstruck Entertainment in 91, and she was duty bound to hande questions from the press, operating as a iaison in a time of crisis between a ceebrity and the pubic. She spent the day handing cas at home, professionay fieding the questions and doing her best to mask the emotiona torment inside. It s surrea, recas Boher. One person having an accident is hard enough, but you mutipy that times eight, and it was eight of your friends, it makes it reay hard. Rory Lee Feek, as the husband/duet partner for Joey Martin Feek, served as a de facto representative during his wife s fourmonth stay in hospice, which ended with her death on March 4. The hurt was appropriatey evident in his bog postings as he shared her fina weeks. But under more traditiona circumstances, the pubicists for George Jones, Mindy McCready and Backroad Anthem s Craig Strickand were required to remain as even-keeed as possibe in their pubic demeanor, forced to discuss a fresh tragedy and suppress their anguish unti they found time in private. I cried because I knew her, I knew her passion and her pain, and as much as a pubicist tries to work with and protect her artist, I coud never have protected her from any of that. He set out on a hunting trip in Arkansas on Dec. 27, and his body wasn t found for more than a week. The day of the pane crash in 91, at east one TV reporter chastised Boher when she decined to put a grieving McEntire in front of their cameras. She was in no state to tak to anybody that day, and I had to get firm with a few peope and just te them, No, it s not going to happen, recas Boher. [Some] kept pressing and caing back and saying, That s what she needs to do, that s what she s supposed to do. And it s ike, No, she s not. That s not her job. Webster & Associates president/ceo Kirt Webster tacked the deaths and/ or funeras of Jones, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and, more recenty, Jim Ed Brown. He has seen boundaries pushed even further. Within hours of us actuay reeasing the information about George Jones, I started getting phone cas offering me six-digit numbers for photos of George during visitation, says Webster. They were ike, We give you cash, we wi not report this. We just want a reay good photo of George ying in the coffin. I said, Thanks, but no thanks. And it never happened. I aso got those same offers for Johnny Cash. The bigger an artist s pubic persona, the more compicated the process becomes, particuary because the funera can be arge. It needs to baance the famiy s pain with that of the artist s fans. For the McEntire pane crash funera, Boher s former empoyer Liz Thies, a veteran pubicist who owned Network Ink and is now associated with the Country Music Ha of Fame took over funera detais, aowing Boher to grieve. Jones, a Grand Oe Opry member, was euogized at the Opry House, and Opry VP/GM Pete Fisher and the Opry pubicist, Schmidt Reations owner Jessie Schmidt, payed a big part in the process. The memoria incuded speeches and performances from such feow artists as Aan Jackson, Brad Paisey and Kenny Chesney. Creating an additiona set of detais, peope from outside the music community incuding First Lady Laura Bush and CBS newsman Bob Schieffer aso took part. As soon as you announce somebody s passing, the first question is, What are the arrangements? says Webster. So you iteray have to go into show-business mode and put on a show. We had to take a professiona side of things, as we as our emotiona side, drive it right down the midde and make it something that woud represent George and the Grand Oe Opry very we. Eventuay, every country artist dies. Someone wi have to serve as a conduit between the act and the pubic, heping everyone ese come to terms with the oss. Unfortunatey, the job forces many pubicists to wait months sometimes years before they re abe to do that for themseves. It s a weird thing to have to sit and process, refects Boher. You snatch the moments when you can, to sit and think about them, and to cry. Houser s mouth was so wide open that the fiings in his teeth were visibe, and his head was tited back just enough that it amost seemed as if his face had disappeared. The physica image matched the sonic waop: Houser was committed to the emotion in the song, and every piece of his bronchia channe was unobstructed, aowing 100 percent of that feeing to find its way into the speakers. I m totay immersed when I get into it ike that, says Houser at his pubicist s office near Nashvie s Bemont University. I sort of disappear into it and cose my eyes, and just et it fy. It is a eap of faith. It s amost ike you open your mouth and whatever God intended to come out, comes out, good or bad. The good far outweighs the bad with Houser, who s highy regarded among his feow country artists. He undeniaby is the best mae vocaist we ve got in country music, enthuses Chris Janson. That dude can sing his butt off. Houser gets a chance to demonstrate that on Song Number 7, a tite Janson co-wrote with Justin Wison ( Kiss You in the Morning, Later On ) and Ben Haysip ( It Goes Like This, When She Says Baby ) in eary It s actuay singe No. 2 from Houser s new abum Fired Up, reeased to radio via HOUSER Pay MPE on March 11, the same date the abum went on sae. At the time, Fired Up s ead singe, We Went, rested at No. 1 on Country Airpay, creating some anticipation for Song Number 7. In reaity, the new singe was song No. 2 during the writing session at This Music, the Nashvie pubishing company that represents Haysip. Wison, who was running ate that day, had been paying Codpay s Paradise repeatedy for a coupe days, and as he sat at a red ight on Grand Avenue at 16th Avenue, just two bocks from This Music, he was running through potentia song tites. He toyed unsuccessfuy with Abum Cut, but it morphed into Song Number 7, which he thought had some potentia, especiay because he coud envision the same sort of ringing echo in the chorus that s key to the Codpay song. I was stuck on this repetitious thing Song number seven, seven, seven, says Wison. The Codpay song, it was ike, Para, para, paradise. I was istening to that for ike two days, and I wanted to do something simiar to that. Obviousy not copy it, but something simiar to it. When Wison arrived at This Music, Haysip and Janson were aready 10 minutes into working on another song, Before I Ever Knew Ya, so he dived in with them, and they crafted it quicky. As Janson and Wison packed up, Haysip started aimessy nooding around on the guitar, and he ocked into a chord progression that resonated with Wison. The sound was perfect, announced Wison, for this tite that he had concocted: Song Number 7. Ben just stopped, recas Wison. He ooked at me, and he goes, We re writing that right now. Haysip s progression became the foundation for verse No. 1, which kicks off with a reference to song No. 1, an unnamed hit that gets everybody in a fictitious party setting to sing aong. The writers deveoped the story sequentiay, ending the first stanza with a woman at the party cozied up to the singer on song No. 3 of the CD. At the chorus, Wison broke out into the Song Number 7 tite and the seven, seven echoes that cement the hook. In verse No. 2, the coupe gets ost in itsef, and the surroundings become more important the refection of the stars in her eyes, the sme of hickory and a poeticay described Georgia evening: the midnight bue behind a red-dirt moon. I come from red dirt, notes Haysip. I think [that phrase] gets overused sometimes, but from guys ike me who actuay come from that, you want to write about it because you ove it so much. Through the first two minutes, Song Number 7 coud be perceived as a one-night stand, but at the bridge, the writers caed on music s nostagic capabiities. In a short three ines, they reframe the song as the story of a we-estabished coupe hitting repeat on song No. 7, effectivey reiving the night they met. We didn t want to just make it another random back-of-the-truck-bed hookup song, says Janson. We re a three happiy married, so we wanted to infuse that in it. Janson s Buy Me a Boat hadn t yet broken out, and whie he had ambitions as an artist, he thought Song Number 7 was idea for Houser. Wison, meanwhie, has a range and a tone simiar to Houser, so they had him sing ead on the work tape with Janson and Haysip chiming in on the seven, seven echoes. They arranged a quick demo session for both of the day s tites at Luke Wooten s Station West, and since Wison s pubisher, Magic Mustang, is under the same BBR umbrea as Houser s abe, Stoney Creek, it didn t take ong for the song to get into Houser s hands. When you hear it you can t hep but start singing aong with it, says Houser. He aready had six songs finished for Fired Up, and producer Derek George (Joe Nichos, Chase Bryant) booked Sound Stage for another round to make sure the writers et them keep Song Number 7. It came together so fast that Houser was sti earning the song during the tracking session, which reied heaviy on drummer Lonnie Wison and bassist Michae Rhodes to fatten up the midtempo foundation. I remember as we were istening to the demo, Lonnie ooking at me and giving me a wink ike, Yup, this is a big one, says George. We a had a discussion after the demo was over that we had to toughen it up a itte bit. Russe Terre sang the echoes on the finished version, and Houser rifed through the fina voca in George s basement studio, tapping into that fu, unobstructed emotion on the song No. 7 hook in the chorus. When he can just reay mik a big, o ong word, that s where Randy ives, says George. That s his whoe wheehouse, so it was a reay easy voca to get. BBR CEO/president Benny Brown initiay sequenced Fired Up with Song Number 7 in one of the first four sots, where itunes shoppers woud be more ikey to preview it. But Houser, according to George, convinced Brown to make Song Number 7 track No. 7 on the CD. With the CD fading as a medium, it brings the song s ong-term future into question. Spotify, for exampe, does not number the tracks in a payist. Wi isteners reate to the message in 10 years when streaming is dominant? That was never a concern for the writers. I just try to write songs that are hits right now, says Haysip. We worry about the future ater. Things are ooking great for the singe today. It debuts at No. 43 on the current Country Airpay chart, even though the tracking period cosed just two days after its officia reease. Houser, who thinks the emotion is far more important than that pesky numbering system, figures that even when the CD itsef is nostagic, Song Number 7 wi sti ring true to peope, whether they see it as the seventh song in a CD or a payist. You were initiay reuctant to manage Od Dominion. Why? Od Dominion came to us through [hit songwriter] Shane McAnay, whom we have a cose friendship with. Pus, if you ook at the history of our business, very few stars have been bands. These guys changed my mind because they re a unit. They know who they are. But the journey to get them signed was not easy. We had interest at various abes, but for whatever reason we were getting doors shut. In the meantime, they were wiing to go out in a van. The reign woud mark his ongest of 11 tites that topped Biboard country taies. The iconic track was Presey s first singe on RCA Records, after Sun Rec ords founder Sam Phiips sod the King s contract for $35,000. Written by Tommy Durden and Mae Boren Axton, the song was inspired by a newspaper account of a man who jumped from a hote window to his death, eaving behind a note with the words, I wak a oney street. Presey recorded Hote on Jan. 10, 1956, two days after his 21st birthday, in Nashvie with a band that incuded guitarist Chet Atkins and pianist Foyd Cramer, at the Methodist Teevision, Radio & Fim Commission, then used by RCA. A car deaer demoished the buiding in January 2006 (the month of the recording s 50th anniversary) to make room for a parking ot.
