Every answer we say is just, We re top 10, we re top 10, we re top 10. It s a joking oversimpification, but it woud be hard to bame him for the enthusiasm. It has been 13 years since the duo LoCash signed its first contract with a booking agency, it has had a coupe of record abes wit beneath it, and yet here it LOCASH is in 2015, in the top 10 of the Country Airpay chart, with a record abe, Reviver, that has never reached that eve before. The pair has two bottes of wine Shipwrecked, its own brand ready to be uncorked to mark the achievement. But it s not the first time LoCash has popped a cork during the ascent of the song in question, I Love This Life. We ve actuay ceebrated this whoe journey, says Preston Brust, the other haf of the duo. When we hit top 40, we ceebrated. When we hit top 30, we ceebrated 20 and now 10. And we can t wait to ceebrate nine and eight and five and go on. The optimism isn t just an excuse to party, and LoCash doesn t have a naive, Poyanna approach to its career. The act has been chaenged numerous times on the way up, doggedy touring and writing songs whie its career as a recording act had it seeking mountaintop experiences, though it often fet ike cave dweers. There were some dark times, says Lucas. Unfortunatey, probaby more dark times than there were good, and it was reay hard to be positive when it happened. The worst batch of troube came in 2011 and Lucas father died; LoCash s abe, R&J, shut down its marketing and promotion departments; the act s singe C.O.U.N.T.R.Y. tanked in the shuffe; and its fidder, Ryan Troop Jones, died after an ucer turned into a bunde of heath issues. I remember sitting in the back of the bus going, Man, what s going on? Are we not supposed to do this? recas Lucas. In the midde of that mess, Keith Urban reeased the Lo- Cash-penned You Gonna Fy, which reached No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart dated March 3, Four months ater, Tim McGraw reeased another LoCash-written song that woud hit the top 10, Truck Yeah. Subsequenty, it became a itte easier to see the vaue in the hard times.

They re a obstaces that are designed to teach you something, and we ve grown up a ot in this industry over the ast 10 years, and we ve earned how to not ony get around the obstaces but to use them to earn. One of the most important essons was a bit of skepticism. They had penty when Reviver president/ceo David Ross came caing. He had heard severa songs and wanted to sign them to his abe, and he few in from New York within a coupe days to meet. His speed impressed them, as did his promise to sign them and ro out the big guns behind I Love This Life. It sounded nice, but they had aready had five singes sta on the chart between No. 34 and No. 54. We ooked at him and said, What are you going to do differenty? We ve been in this position before, recas Brust. We knew that we were going to have to have a rea team to make this happen. Team-buiding is exacty what Ross proposed. Reviver aunched the singe with the independent Star Farm Nashvie promotion team, founded by Michae Powers and Matt Corbin, and the abe then assembed its own inhouse squad. In the utimate show of beief, Ross sought LoCash s opinions about the staff, which was exempified when he brought in nationa director of promotion David Shaw to hande the Northeast. He s a hard worker, he s aways beieved in LoCash, he s been our friend, says Brust. We stay in touch ike brothers, even when we don t have record deas. We tod him about David; the next thing you know, David is on the staff. And it was so coo to see that happen. Brust and Lucas know a thing or two about hard work, and a itte about saesmanship, too. They met in 2002 at the Widhorse Saoon in Nashvie and formed a partnership, not as musicians but as onstage hosts. Within a month, they signed a dea with Buddy Lee Attractions, and for the next four years, they did their pubic schtick whie taking notes and honing their craft. They taked then-buddy Lee Attractions president Tony Conway into booking them as an act, then hired a band on the fy to back them. LoCash mixes od-schoo harmony with new-schoo production, and it a took hod with I Love This Life, the first singe they recorded with producer Lindsay Rimes, an Austraian musician they recognized rather quicky had a fee for their attitude. This guy just interprets musicay who we are and what we want to do, notes Brust. We don t have to say too much. He knows aready. I Love This Life is the tite track for a six-song EP that was reeased Oct. 30. The duo pans to turn it into a fu abum in 2016, but the timetabe isn t exact. With their first top 10 in tow, they be discovered by a arge number of fans for the first time, so they re more concerned with quaity than with a deadine. We don t reay fee a ot of pressure to have the fu abum out yet, says Brust. We re focused now on I Love This Life getting as high on the chart as we can. It s aready in the top 10. Recenty, Hodges sat down with Biboard and discussed his first 120 days in his new post. You spent two decades with Capito Nashvie, ending in December Did you have any idea at the time of your departure what was next? Did you mu the possibiity of doing something outside of the industry? In 2014, as my contract was ending with Universa Music Group, there were a coupe of exciting opportunities that I wanted to take a ook at. After 20 great years at Capito I fet that I was just ready for a new chapter. It a worked out in the end. And I did get a itte much needed down time before I joined Sony Music Nashvie. Give us a Sony Music Nashvie state-of-the-abe snapshot of your first 120 days. It was a indicative of day one when Randy [Goodman] oaded the entire staff into buses and a of us went to the Country Music Ha of Fame for a history of the company. Coumbia Records is 125 years od, and RCA is amost as od. They have so much history, and Arista, which has not been around as ong, has had great significance in HODGES our industry. We a earned a ot about the abes that we are serving. After that, it was ike hitting a treadmi with Cam, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Od Dominion a active. I think it s been a positive, fufiing and very eventfu first 120 days. It ooks ike you had a soid start, with a three-week Country Airpay No. 1 for Kenny Chesney, Save It for a Rainy Day, and Underwood s Top Country Abums eader Storyteer. What can you say about your pans for 2016? I think it was important for Kenny because [ Day was] his fourth No. 1 off the [The Big Reviva] abum. He s reay excited about a 2016 abum. Brad Paisey has a new abum coming, and Miranda Lambert and Jake Owen wi aso have new abums in I can t say exacty when yet. Brad is working the singe Country Nation right now, and Kenny s tour starts in February. Miranda has been writing she s fired up and ready and of course, many, many peope are very interested in what she has to say right now [foowing her spit from Bake Sheton]. As digita saes and then streaming have bossomed, radio is sti the priority patform for country. Why? It s definitey the priority patform, and country isteners are sti a very specific ife group. For them, they use radio as their priority pace to isten to music, and it s sti a destination for our isteners, instead of being an impuse. Radio seems to deiver them the product that they want, so for us it maintains a great amount of importance. The music today is as important as it ever has been. Sony Music Nashvie was one of the first companies to have four abes under one umbrea, athough that was scaed back to three. With some competing abes housing four imprints, is Sony ooking to expand to that number once again? I think that every bit of our attention is aser-focused on our three abes and maximizing them, making them as great as they can be. What are the biggest chaenges in managing mutipe abes? The interna competition must be both a bessing and a headache. Yes, both, but I am ucky that a three abes are ed by seasoned eaders: vps of promotion Keith Gae [RCA], Norbert Nix [Coumbia] and Lesy Simon [Arista]. They re a pros, and, whie maintaining competitiveness, they aso understand the famiy umbrea. Very few times is it a headache. It s an enormous responsibiity to nurture and grow such great abes. The surprise reease is a somewhat new deveopment, dating to Beyoncé s sef-tited 2013 abum. You have artists that coud perhaps pu that off, incuding Underwood, who was heaviy marketed in advance of Storyteer. Did you think about using that surprise method for her? We waked into the Storyteer project just as we were getting started here, and there was aready a pan in process. Pus, the reease of her singe Smoke Break was ony nine weeks off, so we wanted to reay make the most of that aunch. [The song debuted at No. 24 on Country Airpay in September and rose to No. 2.] A the songs on the project seem to be cohesive. I think we have four or more singes to come. On surprise reeases, in genera, there are so many factors: Is the artist strong enough? Can we keep it quiet internay? Additionay, Storyteer, woud be a major project to round out 2015, so it had great importance, aong with abum reeases by Chris Young, Od Dominion and Cam. You re in a dua roe of radio promotion and artist deveopment. How is your time spit between those two words? In theory, they are much the same word. The ines between departments are becoming burred. Take marketing and saes; we re a marketing peope. For me, it s an interesting dichotomy. My background is promotion, and promotion is the front ine for breaking an artist. My job here is to take good care of the music, on a fronts. Songs by superstar acts can rocket up Country Airpay and fa off quicky, whie other artists can be worked up to 52 weeks. That must be frustrating. How do you keep your promo department motivated to maintain momentum for a fu year? Chase Rice s Gonna Wanna Tonight hit No. 2 in its 50th week, ending up behind Luke Bryan s Strip It Down. When do you finay decide nice job and ca it a day? A ot of times it s just about the traffic on the chart, pus we had stations at 2,000 spins on [ Gonna ], and they reay needed to get off of it. I coud certainy understand that. The audience oves the song, and it s a hit. I think on the topic of star acts that rocket up the chart and fa off quicky, there s a positive side to that. The artists woud say that they d ike to get that next singe going and maybe end up with three or even four singes from an abum. Add that to the conversation and they re not reay going to be too upset. Finay, for what new artists are you predicting great things in 2016? Look for Maren Morris in eary She was our first signing since arriving here, and I have reay high hopes for her. I aso have high expectations for the group LANco. Brandon Lancaster is the ead singer. They are working with producer Jay Joyce, and we introduce them sometime in Aside from that, we have ots more coming in 2016 that I can t discuss just yet. The project connected with the pubic we enough that by the time the abum earned that recognition, it had aready yieded singe No. 5. Repubic Nashvie reeased Confession to radio on Nov. 3 through Pay MPE. To reease a fifth singe man, it doesn t reay happen that much anymore, says the duo s Brian Keey. We knew it was going to touch a ot of peope, and that s what we re most concerned with. I think it s going to have a huge impact. One desired impact the act hopes Confession wi make is to change a few perceptions about the breadth of FGL. The duo, of course, estabished its brand on the back of numerous good-time tites, incuding Cruise, This Is How We Ro and Sun Daze. But Confession ike the first singe from Anything Goes, Dirt casts the twosome in a more serious ight, a vita step as it works on abum No. 3. You can ony do the party thing for so ong, says producer Joey Moi (Jake Owen, Chris Lane). Keey and his voca partner, Tyer Hubbard, are definitey of a mind to stretch their creative wings. That s the beauty of being an artist, says Hubbard. You can kind of put yoursef into different positions and different paces mentay, spirituay and emotionay. If every song was the same, it d get boring. As serious as Confession is, the origina intent was a party spirit. Songwriter Matt Jenkins ( Cop Car, Where It s At ) arrived at the Music Row office of songwriter Ross Copperman ( Beat of the Music, John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16 ) with a arger tite, Confessions of a Country Boy, which he envisioned as a rambunctious song that might fit Bake Sheton. When third writer Rodney Cawson ( American Kids, Burnin It Down ) arrived, they married the tite to an instrumenta track that Copperman had brought in, but the concept quicky morphed into something ese. The track had so much emotion to it, it fet ike there was aready a song or a story in the track, says Jenkins. Rodney, at that point, had the idea to just simpe it down and ca it Confession, and then you just start going through the scenarios you can write this idea about. The most obvious tack woud be to make a confession of infideity. But artists haven t recorded a ot of cheatin songs in the recent past. They totay woud in the 1970s, but in this day and age, I m not banking on anyone wanting to cut that, says Cawson. So we kept paying with the idea unti we got it to where it s just a guy [who] drives outside of town and parks somewhere and drinks a beer and ooks at where his ife is. To me, that seems ike there may be more than one person that woud want to cut that. They aso considered rummaging through the probems that brought the guy to a crossroads. But that approach had imitations. It s more powerfu to not ist a this stuff that you have done in detai, says Jenkins. There s ike this inner-turmoi wresting with the confession stuff, but you never reay unpack a these detaied things. Instead, they fied it with artsy images and phrases that conveyed his isoation, beginning with rusty barbed wire and jet trais cuttin cross the sky, and reaching a peak on the chorus as the guy sees his own face in the windshied, ony to recognize a crack in the refection. They thought it had the potentia to be a specia song. But it was aso a grinder, says Copperman. They worked a good eight hours on it one day FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE and invested another three or four hours in a second writing session before they naied it down. It was such a tricky song, he expains. It was one of those songs where you re saying a ot without saying a ot. Pus, the first ines were so iterate and specific that it set a difficut standard for the rest of the song s yrics. Every ine had to be this crazy-good image of this guy just refecting on his ife, adds Copperman. Rodney s the king of those rea-ife moments. Cawson, in fact, hammered out the biggest sticking point: the ines eading up to the word confession in the chorus. The imagery was dark enough that he wanted to find something a itte ighter without destroying the introspective nature of the piece. He soved it with the phrase right hand on a cod-one confession. But even that acohoic reference hints at another weighty subject. You put your right hand on the Bibe when you take that oath in court, says Cawson. This is a right hand on a cod-one confession. That ightened it up just enough. Copperman buit the demo with a bit of an indierock fee, and they a agreed that Jason Adean was the best target for Confession. But he never got a chance to hear it. Big Loud Shirt, Cawson s pubishing company, is aso the management company for Forida Georgia Line. Partner Seth Engand thought Confession was idea for Anything Goes, which was about two-thirds competed. The duo had been besieged with party songs from outside writers, and this one was something deeper. He emaied it to the band and to Moi. We were immediatey drawn to the tite, says Keey, who fet that an attitude that s conveyed in a tite ike Anything Goes naturay eads to a confession. I think it s a spiritua song. It s coming of age for both Tyer and I. I think it reay does bookend the abum we after starting it off with Dirt. Moi kept much of the origina intent of the demo, athough he brightened it up a bit, particuary with 16th notes payed by eectric guitarist Adam Shoen fed to provide a itte extra movement. Charie Judge aso got a gassy tone from a church organ to pay up the spiritua content, and Moi jacked the chorus up in intensity. The fundamentas and the foundation of the track were a there, says Moi. The demo was just a itte softer, so I just kind of put the FGL wrapping paper on it, but didn t ose any of the demo s charm. As is typica in Moi s voca sessions, Hubbard and Keey sang the song over and over in the studio unti the words and the meaning behind them were second nature. There s a ot of range, and we probaby did takes before we had the one we wanted, says Hubbard. There s one thing in knowing the meody and yrics to a song. There s another eve of confidence that comes with being abe to beieve it when you sing it. FGL sang it during the Country Music Association Awards on Nov. 4, the day after its reease to radio. It s at No. 31 in its fifth week on Hot Country Songs and No. 28 on Country Airpay, perhaps heping the duo change its pubic perception. I think for what we got coming, this reay opens the door, says Keey. Maybe it s time we take credit for throwing the biggest parties in the brocountry, or whatever you want to ca it. And I aso think we re the eaders in the next step. If we take credit for that, then it s up to us to ead the way with something fresh.

17 BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE DECEMBER 7, 2015 PAGE 17 OF 22 THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK Country Fan Makes Meeting The Stars A Fu-Time Hobby If you have ever attended any of country music s major events, you have no doubt noticed the custer of fans camped out in the corners of hote obbies or behind rope ines, at vaet stands or outside of stage doors a just hoping for a photo and a moment of one-on-one interaction with the stars. Attend enough such events and their faces start to ook famiiar, particuary a perpetuay enthusiastic fan named Rita Huff. In recent years, Huff and her friends have been spotted in paces you might expect, ike CMA Music Festiva, the Country Music Assn. Awards and the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards (where Huff has worked reguary as a seat fier), but aso at the ASCAP, BMI and SESAC Country Awards and even at more radio-specific events ike Country Radio Seminar in Nashvie, the Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Seminar in Memphis and the radio remotes that are hed prior to the two major awards shows. She has become such a famiiar face at industry gatherings that she caims radio broadcasters often just assume she s one of their own. Everybody cas me aey cat, because we re aways hanging out in the aey [behind venues] where [stars] park waiting on them to arrive so we can just say hi and get a hug and a picture, she says. My friends say I have a goden horseshoe up my you-knowwhat because I m aways at the right pace at the right time. Huff, now 53, attended her first CMA Festiva (then Fan Fair) back in 1999 a by hersef. I didn t know what to do, so that year I just waked around and took pictures of everybody in their booth and went out to the concerts, she recas. I didn t know about the meet-and-greet part of it because I was new. She estimates that she has now met a but a handfu of the country stars of the ast quarter century. I ve become a master at it, she admits proudy. I get more yeses than I get nos. My friends and I, we don t do drugs, we don t smoke, we don t have any of those bad habits, says Huff. We don t drink. Our natura high is just getting photos with the stars. Those friends ive a over the country and in Canada, and Huff first met many of them whie pursuing their shared interest. It s just a hobby, ike [how] some peope party at footba games, she expains. We see these peope on TV on awards shows, and we hear their music on the radio, says Huff, [so] we just ike to see them in person to see what kind of personaities they have, if they re different than they are when you see them on TV... Mosty the artists are nice. It s the [handers] with them that can be butts. Despite the obstaces, Huff and her friends have become pros at the art of staking stars. They choose a more ow-key approach than other fans and work connections to aways be in the right pace at the right time, and she has met many of Nashvie s top stars mutipe times. Huff aso has a hobby of fying out to daytime soap opera fan events, and is equay passionate about the stars from that word. She has become quite Country fan Huff with (cockwise from top eft) Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Chris Stapeton and Brett Edredge. fruga, working airine discounts, hotes and friends guest rooms ike a champ to keep the trave costs of her star-seeking under contro. Huff and her friends often stay four to a room to keep costs down. She aso buys penty of concert tickets, as we as country music CDs when they re on sae. And as you might expect, she works the contests on her oca radio stations and in newspapers in the Memphis area hard to win as many of those items as she can. My motto is if it s somebody I reay want to see, I buy tickets, she says. And whie she never spurges for the best seats, Huff says, Just get me in the door and I m going to make my way down to a coser seat, because there s aways empty seats. At music events, she s as excited to meet deveoping acts as superstars. We passed up Bake Sheton the first year at Fan Fair because my friend was tired, she says, sti sounding a itte annoyed about it. We, ook at him now! So our motto is get them from the beginning because you never know who s going to be the next George Strait or the next Aan Jackson. They ve a got to start somewhere. (Jackson, incidentay, is the star who first sparked Huff s interest in country music. Her emai address is a tribute to him, and she even once dated a man who won a Jackson ook-aike contest.) She has a trick for identifying the baby acts that tend to popuate the St. Jude seminar. We just go to [Nash] Country Weeky magazine and write down a the who to ook for in the next year [acts] and a the newcomers, and that s how we kind of figure out who s coming, she says. Then they stake out a comfy spot in the Peabody Hote obby and commence the search. Her current favorite stars incude Brad Paisey, Keith Urban and ABC s Nashvie TV star Chares Esten, who she refers to as her fantasy husband to his face, something that eicits a chucke from the actor, who ike many stars has met Huff so many times he knows her by name. She has even worked as an extra on Nashvie, which pays enough for her to afford gas and food to trave from her Memphisarea home to the Nashvie set. She s never afraid to get an eary start at events, expaining, The ones who are up against the barricade are the ones to get their pictures. So she has stood in ine from 4:30 a.m. unti 4:30 p.m. in Las Vegas to meet Lione Richie at an ACM event and once sept on a sidewak to meet Reba McEntire at CMA Fest. But those ong ines are where the takative fan makes friends. A 26-year empoyee of FedEx s accounts receivabe department, Huff is currenty on the job hunt after being aid off, and aspires to one day and a position in the country music business, where she hopes her tenacity and mutitasking skis woud be an asset. At FedEx, Huff says she was entited to have a TV on her desk because she was a high producer, and woud jugge watching soaps via an earpiece in one ear and trying to win country radio station contests whie istening through an earpiece in the other, a whie sti working circes around everybody ese.
