Personaities, said Phiips, need to have rea, unique personas, not the cookie-cutter radio voice of a previous era. And country radio s best chance at hoding onto its eadership remains in its abiity to deiver artists to its audience. The peope who make the music are perhaps the most accessibe of any format, and their wiingness to connect with fans through oca radio is a huge bonus for a country station. That s such a breath of fresh air that I just don t get to see, said Cumuus corporate PD of rock formats Troy Hanson. They re too worried about coo in my format. I remember a guy once said to me, Coo don t pay the bis. That s the difference that sets McGraw and his feow country acts apart. The song increases by 6 percent to 49.6 miion audience impressions in the week ending Feb. 14, according to Niesen Music. On Hot Country Songs, the singe hods at its No. 4 high, up 17 percent in overa activity (encompassing airpay, saes and streaming). Backroad, which Smith co-wrote and co-produced with Frank Rogers, debuted on Country Airpay on Juy 18, 2015 (at No. 58). It was originay reeased on the former s independent abe, Pioneer Music. Debuting at a time when women were strugging at country radio, she obbed the unconventiona song into country s mix ast summer, ascending to No. 2 on both Hot Country Songs and Country Airpay. Buit around a bazing dream sequence, it aso grabbed a Grammy nomination for best country soo performance. Cam foows up that singe with Mayday, a song that reies on maritime imagery to weave its tae of a sinking reationship. In the process, she has segued topicay from fire to water, a move that amuses even her. We think about this a the time, she says with a augh. It s not the ony dichotomy at work in Mayday. The song s pot is one that requires immediate action This is an emergency, she sings in the chorus but its creation happened sowy and methodicay. It has been at east five years since Cam started working on it, and its seed was panted even before that. Burning House co-writer Tyer Johnson who co-produced Cam s Untamed abum with the Grammys producer of the year, Jeff Bhasker (Bruno Mars, fun) started Mayday before he ever met Cam, at a time when he was drowning in a reationship that didn t seem to be working. He was frustrated and stuck, and that inspired the introductory ines in the first two verses, pus the key part of the chorus. The important part was the hook of having a song where you go Mayday, mayday, this is an emergency, says Johnson. When he payed those portions for other peope, they invariaby thought the idea had the makings of a hit, but he was unabe to move forward with it, in part because he was stuck in the negativity he associated with the reationship, even after it had ended. You want to hod resentment, but that s ike drinking poison to make the other person sick, he says. That s what the song is kind of about: owning up to your part and recognizing that if you re not happy guess what? Make a change. When Johnson met Cam and started writing with her, around 2010, she was in her own dead-end reationship, so the idea of Mayday was supereasy to connect with, she says. Maybe you re saying you re the victim, but reay it takes two to be in it, Cam continues. You want more, and you know you want better, but a part of you might be ike, No, this is a I can get. You hear this interna monoogue back and forth, just trying to decide with yoursef, How bad is this reay? Shoud I put up with this? Oh, it s their faut that I m here. You re putting a the power and the bame on the other party. As dark as the concept was, Cam added some positivity as she found the ines to finish each of the verses Johnson had started and heped bring the chorus to a concusion. She aso came up with a twisty, mantra-ike meody that connected the syncopated phrasing in the verses with the more straight-forward sound in the chorus. She sang that section with an open-throated aaah as a pacehoder, assuming the right words woud come aong. Eventuay, they decided against any yrics in that spot at a. At one point we wanted to find words for it, she recas. But it was kind of a nice break, because the verses are so wordy, to have ike a amenting sort of sigh that s going on at that point. Cam programmed a drum beat to the first version of the song that sounded a bit triba, and in her first attempt at recording it in a basement in Portand, Ore. she stacked some harmonies onto the verses. Cam and Johnson were pretty sure they had something specia, so they were taken aback when Bhasker panned it; he tod them it needed more work before it coud become a hit. They were tempted to ignore his comments, but they went back and found ways to improve Mayday. Jeff s criticism of it was just perfect, says Johnson in retrospect. It s a song that wasn t good enough that we worked on to make good enough. They made a few minor tweaks to it, incuding a chord change in the chorus, and about three years after they had started it, they brought another version to Bhasker. It was better, he thought, but the chorus sti wasn t working. Utimatey, they ifted the Mayday opening in the chorus to a higher frequency, brightening it up a bit, and it made a ton of difference. Most of the instrumenta parts were recorded at Foo on the Hi in Nashvie s Berry Hi area, with guitarist Tom Bukovac paying a key roe. He spent an inordinate amount of time chasing down the right parts, which Cam took as a sign of respect for the song. He does so many sessions a day, and he s very I don t want to say picky, but he ikes what he ikes, and if he doesn t ike it, I don t think he go searching for stuff, says Cam. But he reay iked this, so he s paying and paying, and he was taking about how ike every take he was getting coser. I thought that was the cooest thing. Bukovac aso recommended a drummer, Ian Fitchuk, who pays keyboards, writes and produces. His versatiity heped him match the right percussive fee to the other parts of the performance, and his contribution is key to the sound of the end product. He brought this kit that was a itte bit wobby CAM I think there was ike duct tape on it, recas Johnson. But he was just the perfect drummer. The pocket that he has is so great, and I think he pays with a ot of sensitivity. The track was mosty competed when Cam signed with Arista, but a major-abe dea meant they had a budget to work with, so they took Mayday back into the studio with stee guitarist Russ Pah, who brought in a bunde of pedas that gave him the abiity to change the tone. Utimatey, he found the right sound to provide a swe at the start of Mayday that baances out some of the rhythmic heaviness. We have ike a ove/hate reationship with the song because we coudn t get it right, says Johnson. We knew it was great, peope iked it, but we coudn t get it to fow right. It aways bugged us, but the peda stee part, we put it in the top, put those harmonies in, never touched it again. Done. Johnson had to fight, though, to stay done. Touring had made Cam s voice stronger, and she insisted on going back into the studio and punching in on Mayday to toughen up one voca segment. But Johnson didn t think the new take worked. There s something a itte more innocent and fragie about [the origina], says Cam. It was the one time Tyer threw a huge fit. He woud not put the new piece in there. We re bitching back and forth, and in the end, he was right. As Cam hit the road for her abum Untamed, Mayday seemed to generate the biggest response from fans, and Arista reeased it to radio via Pay MPE on Jan. 26 with a Feb. 15 add date. Thus, the abe asked radio to commit to her water-drenched song the same day that her fire-sparked Burning House was up for its Grammy. Mayday entered Country Airpay at No. 54. As urgent as its yric is, Mayday required years to get from its inspiration to the marketpace, which speaks voumes about Cam s tenacity. It was such a difficut batte, she says, but we do not give up.

Raised in Brookyn as the son of a professiona musician father and dancer mother, Fernandez earned an economics degree at Harvard before aunching his career on Wa Street, first as a banking associate with Brown Brothers Harriman in New York and then as assistant vp for Merri Lynch, working in both New York and London. He currenty resides in Connecticut with his wife and their three chidren. FERNANDEZ What is the biggest issue facing the radio business? This industry needs to continue to innovate. When I ook at a ot of the streaming services and a ot of digita deveopment, I m actuay surprised sometimes that more hasn t been done or deveoped by traditiona over-the-air broadcasters They need to invest more in R&D and to experiment and, for some reason, they don t or they haven t Companies need to have the courage to pow profits back into R&D and, if they do, I think they can ensure their future. That s probaby the biggest issue that I see. Having come from GE, a arge industria company where [research and deveopment] and what we used to ca NPI new product introduction are just so key to your business, and where many miions of doars are spent every year, I just don t see that as much or, at times, at a in this industry, and I think the industry needs it. What is one industry prediction you have for 2016? I woudn t be surprised if eventuay you saw a merger among the streaming companies [or] an acquisition or a merger between a pure streaming company and a traditiona over-the-air broadcaster. The streaming companies have gotten very creative in innovating things digitay that over-the-air broadcasters probaby shoud have done, but certainy coud earn from. So I woudn t be surprised if you saw either a merger among streamers or some over-the-air/ streaming combinations. Is that something you re ooking to do at CBS? I don t think so, because I ve been very peased with our digita efforts. [There was] a decision some six [or] seven years ago at CBS to combine the digita efforts of oca teevision and our radio business in a singe group, and that s our CBS Loca Digita Media. So my digita efforts sit between TV and radio, and they re two [or] three hundred peope strong. They re some of the most creative peope that I ve ever worked with. In most markets, or neary a in which we operate, we re ceary the digita eaders because [of] that step years ago I fee ike I ve been handed something very vauabe here. We are very far ahead in terms of our digita efforts. If you coud rate yoursef on the first 10 months on the job, what are some things that you are most proud of having accompished at CBS so far? There are a ot of things that I needed to focus my time on inward to make us a better business. Those things incuded improving certain processes, making sure that we had a better overa operating rigor, that there was better communication among the different team members and constituents on the team, better transparency, faster decisions, carity of decision-making. I aso think that we ve got a cear, more concise business strategy too. There s now a cuture where peope can express their point of view, take some risks, take chances. Is there more of that to come, or wi the next year shift your focus from ooking inward to ooking outward? There was a ot of that in the beginning that needed to get done. Now we can shift externay and execute more on our strategy It frees me up to be much more externay focused. What is one of your eadership phiosophies? So much depends on your reputation; guard it with your ife. I work and ead by the highest standards of ethics and honesty, and I expect that of my team. I got some of the greatest compiments at my ast company, Journa, when we were sod [to the E.W. Scripps Company] and a number of board of directors members tod me when I was eaving, You were aways true to your word, and we never fet nervous or had any surprises with you, because you aways did exacty what you said you were going to do. The company performed aways how you said it was going to perform and, because of that, we aways fet that we were in good hands. Is there anything you coect as a hobby? I m at a phase of my ife where I m un-coecting. I want more simpicity. I think in this era, peope just amass too many things. I actuay don t think it s heathy. You spend so much of your time in your ife coecting and managing and caring for the things you re coecting. I wonder if that s reay time we spent.
