The spotlight first falls on Erich Wolfgang Korngold, considered one of the founders of film music with his influential scores for Captain Blood and The Sea Wolf. Andrew also plays Korngold s outstanding score for The Adventures of Robin Hood, which was released 80 years ago this spring. In the second hour, Andrew celebrates the work of Anne Dudley, with varied selections of music from Poldark, Elle and Jeeves & Wooster. 2

3 DAY: SATURDAY DATE: 21 APRIL COWAN S CLASSICS with ROB COWAN Rob Cowan delves into his record collection to select two hours of handpicked recordings. Rob s Artist of the Week is the London Symphony Orchestra s longestserving Principal Conductor, Sir Colin Davis. Having studied as a clarinettist, but always with the aim of becoming a conductor, Davis s repertoire was incredibly broad and tonight, we ll hear some of his finest recordings. Rob also selects Henry Litolff s Concerto Symphonique No.4 as the springboard for Beyond the Hall of Fame DAVID MELLOR S LIGHT MUSIC MASTERS This week s Light Music Master is the American composer Leroy Anderson. The man behind such favourites as Sleigh Ride, The Bugler s Holiday and Forgotten Dreams has been dubbed by movie music maestro John Williams as one of the great American masters of light orchestral music. Tonight, David showcases a great set of recordings of Anderson conducting his own works SMOOTH CLASSICS with MYLEENE KLASS Myleene presents Classic FM s weekend wind-down, with three hours of Smooth Classics. 3

The Scottish-Egyptian multi-instrumentalist sisters Sarah and Laura Ayoub have been heralded as the new sound and faces of the classical and crossover worlds. Discovered by Mark Ronson, the girls were invited to make their Royal Albert Hall debut at Classic FM Live in After their thrilling performance, they were immediately signed by Universal Music s iconic label Decca Records, in a unique joint venture with Classic FM THE CLASSIC FM CHART with JOHN BRUNNING John counts down the new Top 30 classical albums of the week, revealing the all-important number one just before 7pm. 4

5 DAY: SUNDAY DATE: 22 APRIL DAVID MELLOR Earlier today, thousands of runners competed in the annual London Marathon. Inspired by their efforts, tonight, David Mellor dedicates two hours to music associated with sporting endeavours. He ll begin with Ron Goodwin s music for The Trap better known to many as the theme music to the London Marathon before going on to play Handel s Zadok the Priest (used by ITV in their Champions League coverage), Prokofiev s Dance of the Knights (the piece that accompanies Sunderland FC s footballers when they walk onto the pitch at home games) and Vangelis s famous music for Chariots of Fire. David also shares some fascinating stories about the keen golfer, cyclist and horseracing fan Sir Edward Elgar, who once cut short a rehearsal with the great Yehudi Menuhin because he looked out of the window, saw it was a beautiful day, and took himself off to the races! 2100 EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC with CATHERINE BOTT Tonight, Catherine Bott celebrates two great Lancashire-born musicians who celebrate their anniversaries over the coming week: the singer Kathleen Ferrier, born on 22 nd April 1912, and conductor Thomas Beecham, born on 29 th April Catherine selects these two performers finest recordings and shares the stories behind their lives and careers, including the fact Ferrier s father sang in a choir that was once conducted by Beecham! 2200 SMOOTH CLASSICS with MYLEENE KLASS Myleene invites you to join her with three hours of Smooth Classics. 5

Tonight s concert opens with two fantastic French performers: the pianist Jean Efflam-Bavouzet and his new recording of the Grieg Piano Concerto, and some Spanish guitar music played on the harp by Xavier de Maistre. We ll also hear a contemporary choral music discovery courtesy of the young British choir Voces 8, and Mozart s final piano concerto is played in its entirety by the Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski.
