Carnaval is a celeration o the master cornet soloists and erormers o the late 9th and early 0th centuries through a recording, touring and ulication roect created or Wynton Marsalis and the Eastman Wind Ensemle, Donald Hunserger, Conductor This reissue o the original solo with iano olio and the release o the accomaniments or wind and, in rint and/or rental, salutes Wynton and the erormers and conductor o the EWE Cornet erormers including eanbatiste Aran, ules Levy, Matthew Aruckle, W Paris Chamers, Walter Rogers, Herert L Clarke, Del Staigers, rank Simons and Herman Bellstedt among many others, have long een the idols or succeeding rass layers due to their extraordinary erormance ailities and their inventive solo and edagogical writings These soloists, at the eginning o the last century, were endowed with lowing, agile techniques involving raid, light multile tonguing, the mastery o harmonic series slurs, extreme registers and esecially, the aility to roect warm, singing, cantaile melodic lines The themes that ormed the oundation or their variations were selected y the soloist/writers rimarily on the asis o their simlicity and eauty Not only did the rincial melodies oer the audience eelings o warmth and reose, they esecially rovided a lyrical contrast to the lashy yrotechnics that surrounded them Carnaval was created to salute these earlier day erormers through dislaying the unique ailities o one o today s master soloists: Wynton Marsalis Perhas, it is est to have Wynton descrie the events that led to this unique collaorative undertaking, as written y him in the oreword (Decemer 988) to the original ulication o these solos and accomaniments Ray Wright and Wynton This roect egan in 98 when CBS Masterworks asked me to consider recording an alum o cornet masterieces with a wind and accomaniment I immediately elt that this was something I wanted to do ecause I grew u laying these ieces and entered all the estivals and contests that high school layers today have availale to them One area I wanted to see changed or this recording, however, was the arrangements: In articular, the introductions and reakstrains that today sound so corny ecause they requently were more iller than sustantive musical material So, during a visit to the Eastman School o Music, where I was aearing as soloist with the Eastman azz Ensemle [Rayurn Wright, Director], I met with Donald Hunserger, Conductor o the Eastman Wind Ensemle and a well known arrangerorchestrator I asked him to create new arrangements or the solos to e included on the alum The result, as you can hear, and now see, rovided an entirely new view o these great solos; we used only the original melodic lines and Don wrote a comination o new and modiied original material or the accomaniments The cadenzas are also new, excet or Herert L Clarke s cadenzas, where I wished to use some o his original writing EW PRE IEW VIEW ollowing the recording, the roect continued with a tour o the East Coast and Canada The Eastman Wind Ensemle and I layed maor halls such as The Place des Arts in Montreal, Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, Boston s Symhony Hall, The Academy o Music in Philadelhia, Kennedy Center, Washington, Carnegie Hall in New York and inished in the Eastman Theatre in Rochester Wynton Marsalis New York City As Wynton Marsalis so clearly states in his accomanying oreword, the develoment o a lyrical concet is o utmost imortance Heavy, overlown attacks and tonguing will imede the seed and clarity necessary or clear articulations and will create awkward, or sloy, unmusical eects While it is ossile to develo the technical resources to lay these solos, the aility to sing rom the heart is requently more diicult to achieve Wynton clearly demonstrates in the various lyrical selections that he indeed has that aility Carnaval was recorded in the Eastman Theatre o the Eastman School o Music, niversity o Rochester, in early Setemer, 986 y Producer Steve Estein and Engineer Buddy Graham Originally issued as CBS Masterworks LP IM7, it was later renumered Sony CD MK 7 Nominated or a Grammy Award in the Best Instrumental Soloist with Orchestra category, it has now ecome availale as well in various download ormats Donald Hunserger Rochester, NY Setemer, 00 Wynton and Donald Hunserger relax etween takes at the CBS Masterworks recording sessions Photos y Louis Ouzer Photos courtesy o Secial Collections, Siley Music Lirary, Eastman School o Music, niversity o Rochester IEW PREV EW PREV

3 The Comoser HERMANN BELLSTEDT (858 89) Herman Bellstedt, orn in Bremen, Germany in 858, emigrated to America with his amily in 867 They settled in Cincinnati, OH, which served as his rimary residence throughout his career An early rodigy on the cornet, he layed with several rominent ands and was hired y Patrick Gilmore as assistant to the amous Ben Bent as well as serving as cornet soloist ollowing Gilmore s death in 89, he organized a and and served as Conductor and cornet soloist In 90, he oined the Sousa Band, erorming solos and laying alongside Walter Rogers and Herert L Clarke, (the three were known as the amed Three Solitaires ), and uon Rogers dearture rom the Band, ecame Clarke s stand artner Bellstedt returned to Cincinnati ollowing numerous years laying and touring and ecame a edagogue at the Cincinnati Conservatory o Music where one o his most successul students was rank Simon Bellstedt was a successul comoser/arranger or oth Sousa and the rederick Innes Band; the solos Mandolinata and Naoli remain as his two most rememered erormance vehicles Naoli Bellstedt s variations on Naoli eatures the oular Neoolitan song iniculi, inicula (comosed y Luigi Denza in 880) that celerated the unicular railway uilt u the side o Mt Vesuvius in 880 The oular tune was used y Richard Strauss in his comosition Aus Italien under the mistaken idea that it was a olk song, not someone s actual comosition Denza took Strauss to court and won an inunction that orced Strauss s ulisher to ay Denza a royalty every time Aus Italien was erormed!
