& Your Feedback on Stage 2 Information for Stage 2 Students April 2018 UCD School of and Scoil na hinnealtóireachta Leictrí agus Leictreonaí UCD What was good in Stage 2? modules you liked, found interesting smaller class size, getting to know people?? What was not so good? where could we improve things??? Your electives - what did you choose? liked them? would recommend them to others? what modules would you like to have available? Indication of choice just for planning reasons for choice Don t forget module feedback online goes directly to module coordinator also Head of School, Head of Teaching & Learning 2 UCD Pathways DN150 & Route Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Stage 1 Decision Point 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Biomedical Chemical & Bioprocess Civil & Mechanical Decision Point 2 BSc Year 4 Year 5 Programme Master of 2 years specialised study Work experience Entry requirement Stage 4 Bachelor of BE For 2016 entrants Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 & You make a decision entering Stage 3 start to specialise Choose option modules to prepare for either or emphasis emphasis Can use electives to keep both options open but have to specialise in stage 4 more choices 4 1

Future Choices Future Choices Stage 2 Stage 3 Energy Stage 2 Stage 3 & Computer Eng. Energy Systems Elec. Eng. Biomedical Elec. Eng. with Business with Business BE BE Optical BSc Continue towards or BE, or graduate with BSc these are the obvious choices there may be more get BSc ( Science) on route to programmes have entry requirements 5 BE BSc Notes as previous page 6 BE work further study work as engineer possible future vs.? Your decision in August/September when choosing option modules at registration Same basic principles in both circuit theory, electronic devices, signals, etc. Differences in scale electronic engineering small less is better low voltage, low current, low power electrical engineering large more is better high voltage, high current, high power Differences in application electrical engineers use electricity as form of energy electricity supply, motors, generators, batteries electronic engineers use electricity for other things mostly to represent information, in computers, 7 communication systems, entertainment, etc. BE Energy Power system and smart grid sectors Many challenging areas Power system analysis & design Power electronics applications Sustainable power systems Smart grid communication architectures Electricity market operations Real-world, global revolution Diverse generation & demand-side technologies Stability & economic operation of future power systems 8 2

. The bright future for electrical engineering. Dr. Paul Cuffe UCD School of and Scoil na hinnealtóireachta Leictrí agus Leictreonaí UCD From: Nykvist, Björn, and Måns Nilsson. Rapidly falling costs of battery packs for electric vehicles. Nature Climate Change 5.4 (2015): 329. All transport will be electric: Motors are small, cheap and mighty: 3

Work Placements BE & Computer using electricity for control, communication, entertainment, computing, etc. Work at many different levels IC design analogue & digital system design at various scales algorithms, signal processing Traditional focus on hardware but most hardware now involves a computer either an embedded processor or linked to a processor often linked to the Internet 26 so the computer and software side is important Work Placements / BE / BSc? examples from Decision in March 2019 more information then 2 years after stage 3 (5 years, 300 credits) need GPA at least 2.8, stages 2 and 3, weighted full fees: 7640 per year for EU students includes work placement, major project meets requirement for Chartered Engineer (later) BE 4 years, 240 credits normal progression rules apply (50 credits stage 3) BE project (15 credits) requires progression BSc ( Science) 3 years, 180 credits for work, but not as a professional engineer for further study in a different field compatible with continental Europe 28 7

with Business Scholarships Specialise in one branch of civil, electrical, electronic, mechanical to a level similar to the BE degree technical modules typically 35 credits Add business and management modules operations management; project management; supply chain design; business information systems; marketing management; etc. ~50 credits Work placement & Master s thesis mix of engineering and business Total 120 credits (as all the programmes) 29 Industry wants more graduates so wants to encourage more students willing to offer incentives! Intel Ireland 3000 to each of 4 students with best Stage-3 GPA entering & Computer Analog Devices Ireland 2000 to one 3 rd -year student continuing to BE or & Computer Eng. selected by interview from top 3 students on GPA 2000 to one student in 4 th year, Elec. & Comp. selected by interview from top 3 students on GPA 2000 for best degree result in Elec. & Comp. Terms and Conditions 30 Stage 3 Core Modules Semester 1 Multi-variable Calculus for Engineers 2 vector calculus, double integrals, etc. supports Electromagnetic Waves in semester 2 Fourier transform and Fourier series Circuit Theory circuit analysis, 2-port networks, matrix descriptions leads to computer simulation techniques concept of feedback, analogue filters, etc. Signals & Systems tools to analyse signals and systems that handle them supports Signal Processing, Communication Theory, etc. Computer Science for Engineers 2 object-oriented programming, C++ compilers, operating systems, computer hardware 31 Stage 3 Core Modules Semester 2 Modelling & Simulation computer techniques for solving engineering problems practical assignments (choice) Electromagnetic Waves radio waves, microwaves, light transmission lines and free-space propagation Analogue s multi-transistor circuits, integrated circuit techniques feedback, stability, oscillators data converters, power electronics, etc. Signal Processing techniques for processing signals in digital form signal analysis, digital filters, etc. 32 8

Stage 3 Option Modules Choose 2 Stage 3 In-Programme Electives, Sem.1 Machines (sem. 1) transformers, electric motors, generators, etc. Power System (sem. 2) analysis of 3-phase AC power systems Digital System Design (sem. 1) emphasis on design, from specification to chip hardware description language, synthesis, etc. Communication Theory (sem. 2) physical layer communications signals, modulation, demodulation, noise, etc. Networks and Internet Systems computer science: computer networking, Internet Biomedical Signals and Images analysis and processing Thermodynamics 2 theory behind engines of various forms Option modules can also be chosen as electives if not chosen as options All in-programme electives subject to timetable will try to make available, but no guarantee Stage 3 In-Programme Electives, Sem.2 Key Points Introduction to Operating Systems computer science: operating system principles Unix Programming computer science: operating system & programming Professional (Finance) recommended for with Business Option modules can also be chosen as electives if not chosen as options All in-programme electives subject to timetable will try to make available, but no guarantee 35 Important option choice in August/September choose 2 options from 4 choice determines electrical or electronic route Further decisions on BSc / BE / later no need to worry about those yet But if considering in with Business Professional (Finance) is recommended as an elective in stage 3 (not compulsory) Ask for advice if you are not sure if not on campus 36 9
