He~ S a j o oncourse proposes toecone part of EE By Bob Wasserman The Concourse program has submtted a proposal to become a permanent program under the jursdcton of the Electrcal Engneerng Department. Concourse was created as a temporary program n as an alternatve to the tradtonal freshman currculum wth the stpulaton that after fve years the program would be revewed to negotate ts future status. Ths sprng a subcommttee of the Commttee on Educatonal Polcy (CEP) evaluated Concourse along wth the Expermental Study Group. The CEP concluded that Concourse must reman a temporary program admnstered by CEP durng the academc year. CEP reported that Concourse must "fnd an approprate admnstratve department" by the end of the 1976 fall semester or t wll not gan permanency. Professor of Electrcal Engneerng Davd Ader sad he was "optmstc" about the possblty of Concourse ganng permanent status, possbly by the sprng term. Concourse dd not fnd a department nterested n overseeng the program untl the summer, when the Electrcal Engneerng Department expressed an nterest. The EE Department at frst planned to replace much of the teachng staff wth ts own faculty, accordng to Assstant Provost Hartley Rogers, Jr. He further noted that EE later agreed to leave th-e Concourse program unchanged after dscusson wth the CEP. One of the most sgnfcant changes wll be the dsappearance of the large theme exhbts whch were Wenberg's trademark, because the budget wll be "nowhere near what has been spent prevously," explaned und. A major dfference between Wenberg and und s the sprt of cooperaton and enthusasm for und and her deas, as opposed to a lack of concerted effort mentoned by Wenherg's co-workers. Sharng und's enthusasm s 1\1ary Morrssey, head of the nformaton Offce and a obby 7 Commttee member. She favors smaller, more practcal exhbts, und's present nterest. Jeff Casper'77, Frday Nght Drector for the SC seres, attrbuted the smaller crowd to the fact that SACC was runnng "'Catch-22'' n the same tme frame. SC rs attemptng he sad, to provde a servce to the students of MfT by presentng ts lecture seres at the lowest cost possble. f profts go down, ts ablty to effectvely contnue ths servce wll decrease. On the other hand, SACC representatves also nsst that ther organzaton s attemptng to provde an mportant servce to the local communty by offerng an alternatve to the SC,flms. Although SACC's present.schedule of flms offers shows of' much the same type as those to be shown by SC,, mem hers seemed hopeful that the theme of -the seres would later dverge nto of the students, SACC wll be crculatng a petton ths week to document the amount of nterest that SACC members beleve the student body has n ther flm project. Boston frats mus By Danel Nathan Back Bay fraternty houses frce a costly renovaton of ther starcases n order to comply wth a cty safety code. The safety rulng, whch went nto effect Jan. 1, 1975, has a clause requrng that the large crcular starcases be enclosed as E deterrent to the spread of fre fron floor to floor. The code also calls for two safe means -of ext from each floor, a need the renovated starways would meet. The clause requrng enclosed starcases dffers from most other clauses n the code because t apples retroactvely to buldngs that are already completed. The costly buldng of a cement wtalf 'round starways rs conlplcated by al stpulaton n the code that arny buldng beng partally renova ted at a cost of 20 per cent or more of the buldng's worth must he renovated to meet the comnplete code. The FC safety commttee wll come out wth a safety booklet n the near future, contanng deas and people to contact for the varous problems. n addton, the Dean's Offce has been workng wth the MT Safety Offce and Physcal Plant on a "self-nspecton checklst" to contnually keep the fraterntes' "eyes open" for needed mprovements, accordng to Assocate' Dean for Student Affars Ken Brownng '66. Much of ths booklet. whch wll be avalable n the fall, s the result of work done last AP to comple the parts of the Boston safety code that are relevant to fraterntes. Although the fraterntes are separate from the MT dormtory system, MT "has the responshlty to gve them the stamp of atpproval," Brownng sad. Because freshnmen (re generally requred to lve n a dormtory or fraternty, MT hs an oblgaton to see that fraternty houses are safe to lve n, Brou'nng sad.
