Donations of gently used items, other than clothing or large appliances, are now being accepted and are greatly appreciated. They may be brought to the library anytime during normal business hours. Proceeds from this sale are used to fund children s programming throughout the year. Activities here at the library will include a used book sale, historic photos display, children s games courtesy of the Portville Christian Baptist School and other activities to be announced. In addition, there will be a pancake breakfast at the Masonic Temple and activities in Pioneer Park. Please join us! More information will be available on our website and Facebook page.

2 2 A Place to Meet If you are in need of a place to hold a meeting, teach a class or present a program, we can help you out! Our community room, which is located in the basement area under the reference room, will hold approximately 50 people. Tables and chairs are provided and they may be rearranged, as long as they are returned to their original locations. A large screen TV is available and may be used to show a DVD or connect to a projector or laptop computer. The room can be used free of charge for nonprofit groups. Others will be charged $5.00 for its use. If you have any questions or wish to reserve the room, please call us at Come Share Do you have a special interest, skill or story that you would like to share? Or perhaps you know someone who might answer yes to that question. We are always looking for programing ideas here at the library! Stop in or call with your idea. We ll help you plan and get underway. Joe Schueckler assured a large group that You Too Can Bonsai during a program sponsored by the Pfeiffer Nature Center. It was held in our community room Thursday evening, April 20 th. Used ink cartridges may be dropped off at the library for recycling. This helps us earn rewards from Staples. The children s department is accepting donations of used Lego blocks for summer reading activities. They may be dropped off here at the library.

3 3 When children read over the summer months, they tend to maintain or even improve the reading level that they achieved during the previous school year. According to research done at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, students who don t read over the summer can even regress as much as two to three months in their reading development. Summer reading programs, such as the one offered here at our library, can help encourage even reluctant readers to stay on track throughout the summer. We are pleased to partner with the Collaborative Summer Library Program and Summer Reading at New York Libraries to develop programming that can help make a difference. There will be plenty of construction going on during our summer reading program, Build a Better World. The program will be running from July 10th through August 11th. We will be having Monday evening and Friday morning programs where we will use different media including a marble run, snap circuits and cubelets. Young patrons are encouraged to come and discover what these fun activities are all about. Our prize closet is getting full and there will be some super incentives for the children to read and turn in their time sheets. We are looking forward to a great time this summer and are anticipating that many children will register for the program and participate in the activities. 4 New Software Additions 4 The library has recently secured access to two Internet-based software programs. Both programs require a paid subscription to use at home but are free of charge when accessed here at the library. ABC Mouse is an early-learning program for children ages 2-8 with activities at the Pre-K through second grade levels. This is a comprehensive curriculum spanning all major subject areas and with activities that include books, puzzles, educational games, art activities, music and songs. These activities can be done randomly or as part of Step-by-Step Learning Path. It s ideal for homeschooled children as well as others who need reinforcement or skill maintenance throughout the summer months. Children and parents can use any of our five public computers to enjoy ABC Mouse, and help is available. We are also pleased to offer access to the genealogy website Ancestry Library Edition. This free resource gives access to many of the same records found on their subscription site, Ancestry.com. Over 30,000 Ancestry.com record collections are included. That s 11 billion records, including U.S. and international offerings! That number will continue to grow as new records are regularly added. The site can be accessed on the library s public computers or on your own laptop or tablet that you bring to the library. Records can be saved from our computers to your external USB memory device or directly to your laptop or tablet. Records can also be printed for.05 a page in black and white or.50 in color. In addition to records, you will find message boards to connect with other users, a learning center featuring research aides and state information, and printable charts and forms to help organize your research. Help with the site is available during regular library hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and a binder with help resources is located in the reference room.

5 5 Being a participating library in the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System brings many advantages to our patrons. One of the most beneficial is the ability to access the collections of all 38 libraries in the two counties-1.5 million items. Simply by going online and entering a couple of easily found numbers, you can set up an account allowing you to order books, books on CD, magazines and music from any of those libraries. It is truly amazing to be able to do this right from home and then pick the item(s) up here in Portville in a few days time, free of charge. If you do not have access to a computer, the library staff is glad to order books for you, as we often do. But if you would like to learn more about taking advantage of this benefit to order on your own, just stop in and ask how. Either Carol or Kelley would be happy to help you. Soon you will be gleefully clicking and putting holds on books and magazines. Just a warning though: it s addictive! ADVENTURE PASS-CHECK IT OUT! Summer beckons us to alter our routines and find adventure. If you are looking for inexpensive day-trips to sights in the Cattaraugus-Chautauqua area, look no further. This past summer, the two-county library system CCLS piloted the Day Adventure Pass program, which is being continued and expanded this summer. Free entry is provided for many places: the Lucy-Desi Center, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, the East Aurora children s museum, Chautauqua Institute, the Seneca-Iroquois Museum in Salamanca, among other offerings. The Buffalo Zoo pass even allows a child free entrance with an adult. These passes are still good until June, when new ones will be issued, with even more locations. The way it works is simple, if you have a library card in any one of the 38 CCLS libraries. Decide when you wish to attend the destination, and come into the library a few days before to check out the pass just as you would a book. The pass is good for seven days before it is due. Patrons who took advantage of the passes this past year really benefited from the experience and would recommend using the program. Ask a member of the library staff to get more information on what is available.

6 6 Peeks at the Past A series of photographs taken in 1930 and 1931 show how the library s appearance has changed over the years. One of these photos is shown below. The current lift room was once designated as the library s reading room. This view is of the side one would see when standing with one s right side in front of the lift. The doors were removed, so that the room now opens into the entry hall and fiction room, the ornate seating is gone and the wall now features the display cases which house our antique lamp collection and other items. However, the large books that stand in the lower part of the bookcase remain. These are bound editions of Portville s newspapers. Their contents are now available digitally and can be accessed through a link on our website.
