3 (How I feel about leaving.) Good-Bye to Miss Ellie I have so enjoyed working here the past twenty years. My director, Melissa Huisman, the staff, the Friends of the Library and the patrons are wonderful. I will miss my interaction with the children the most. I can t thank you enough for all the wonderful times I ve had at the Gary Byker Library. How lucky I am. Next I will volunteer at Presidential Estates as well as DeVos Children s Hospital doing story times and crafts. My husband and I will celebrate our daughter s wedding this summer then vacation together. Take care all of you. You are the best! Hello to Katie I am so happy that we found a great children s librarian who begins in April. Her name is: Katie Manting-Kirk. Hello! I am very excited to be your new children's librarian. I am looking forward to continuing to bring all the amazing programs that are here at the library. Who is this person taking over for the amazing Miss Ellie? Well, I am a children's librarian who previously worked at the Patmos Library in Jamestown. I live in Grandville with my husband and two boys. They are both tweens and active in robotics, scouting, and other fun things. Of course I love to read. I think book authors are like rock stars! I also enjoy food, knitting, being outdoors, going on adventures, and watching Sherlock, Dr. Who, and ALL the superhero things. I am looking forward to getting to know all the wonderful patrons at Hudsonville! (How Katie feels about coming here!)
4 VESTIBULE DISPLAYS APRIL IS POETRY MONTH During Poetry Month look for book displays, poetry scattered around the library, create your own poetry magnetic boards, and more. Do you have, for example, a doll, matchbox car, horse, or Star Trek collection? If you do please contact the library and we will be happy to display your items. Here is a photo of Zach Van Der Meulen s Star Wars ships and figures. 5 APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH It s National Poetry Month, everybody! Let s celebrate with haiku about reading. Here s how to write haiku: A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem with seventeen syllables, written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. Here are some of our favorites about reading: Treasured stack of books water stained vintage paper old fishing stories. Characters go forth Unlimited stories That new book smell. Now write your own haiku about reading, books or the library.
6 Caldecott winner and Honor books 2017 The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Caldecott winner 2017 Radiant Child: The story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, pictures and words by Javaka Steptoe Jean-Michael Basquiat and his unique, collage-style paintings rocketed to fame in the 1980s as a cultural phenomenon unlike anything the art world had ever seen. But before that, he was a little boy who saw art everywhere: in poetry, books and museums, in games and in the words that we speak. Steptoe's vivid text and bold artwork echoing Basquiat's own introduces young readers to the powerful message that art doesn't always have to be neat or clean to be beautiful. Caldecott Honor books 2017 Leave Me Alone, pictures and words by Vera Brosgol Brosgol incorporates folktale elements in her amusing story of an old woman in search of a quiet place to knit. Fleeing her too small house overrun with too many energetic grandchildren, she packs her needles and yarn and heads for the mountains. Unfortunately, she can't find an undisturbed spot. Hungry bears, curious mountain goats, and little green moon-men provoke her to shout: "Leave me alone!" Climbing through a wormhole, she discovers a dark and quiet place to complete 30 little sweaters. When she returns home... Freedom in Congo Square, pictures and words by Carole Boston Weatherford and R. Gregory Christie Count down the days until Sunday, a day for slaves in New Orleans to gather together and remember their African heritage. Weatherford vividly describes each day of nonstop work under a "dreaded lash" until Sunday, when slaves and free blacks could assemble in Congo Square, now a part of New Orleans' Louis Armstrong Park. Musicians "drummed ancestral roots alive" on different traditional instruments, and men and women danced. They also exchanged information and sold wares. Duz Iz Tak? pictures and words by Carson Ellis Ellis weaves the tale of several square feet of ground in the insect world as the seasons pass. Multiple story lines intersect: a mysterious plant bursting from the soil, the rise and fall of a spectacular fort, and a caterpillar's quiet then triumphant metamorphosis into a shimmering moth. They All Saw a Cat, pictures and words by Brendan Wenzel Every illustration in this book stands alone as a piece of art while serving as a wonderful manual to encourage young minds to enjoy their natural observation skills. The story demonstrates, the fact that every pair of eyes sees the world in their own different way. It may also be your kid's first zoology book, since it accurately shows the difference in each animal's capabilities of vision and sense perception. In clear and unfussy language the child gets to travel above ground, underground, fly a bit and go underwater.
7 Newbery award and honor books 2017 The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. NEWBERY Award Winner Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill Once a year in the Protectorate there is a Day of Sacrifice. The youngest baby is taken by the Elders and left in the forest to die, thus appeasing the witch who threatens to destroy the village if not obeyed. Unbeknownst to the people, Xan, the witch of the forest, is kind and compassionate. When she discovers the first baby left as a sacrifice, she has no idea why it has been abandoned. She rescues the infants, feeds each one starlight, and delivers the shining infants to parents in the Outside Cities who love and care for them. On one occasion, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight along with starlight, filling her with glowing magic. Xan is smitten with the beautiful baby girl, who has a crescent moon birthmark on her forehead, and chooses to raise her as her own child. Twists and turns emerge as the identity of the true evil witch becomes apparent. NEWBERY Award Honor Winners Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams Brought to Life by Ashley Bryan Using real documents from an estate appraisal, Bryan has created beautiful portrait paintings for 11 people who were named and priced as property. Relying on narrative poetry to explore each figure's inner and outer life, Bryan gives voice to their history, their longing for freedom, and their skills as artisans, cooks, musicians, carpenters, etc. The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog by Adam Gidwitz In on a dark night, travelers from across France cross paths at an inn and begin to tell stories of three children. Their adventures take them on a chase through France: they are taken captive by knights, sit alongside a king, and save the land from a farting dragon. On the run to escape prejudice and persecution and save precious and holy texts from being burned, their quest drives them forward to a final showdown at Mont Saint-Michel. Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk Eleven-year-old Annabelle lives in a rural Pennsylvania community in The continued fighting of World War II haunts everyone, but life is mostly peaceful until Betty Glengarry's arrival. Betty is cruel and threatening and thrives on inflicting pain. At first, Annabelle is slightly comforted to know that Toby is watching out for her. Toby is a local vagabond, a World War I veteran of few words who has become something like a friend of Annabelle's family. Meanwhile, Betty's violent malice only grows, until one day she goes missing. Toby immediately becomes the prime suspect in Betty's disappearance. Annabelle is sure of Toby's innocence and is determined to prove it.
