1 Volume 21, Issue 4 April 2015 Household Hazardous Waste Disposal & Electronic Recycling The Boone County Solid Waste Management District will host a free hazardous waste and electronics collection event on Saturday, April 25 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Items can be taken to 1955 Indianapolis Avenue in Lebanon for disposal or recycling. For more information about the collection event, visit or call the District office at Taste of Home Sampler May 4 The Taste of Home Sampler will meet on Monday, May 4 at 6 p.m. The current issue of Taste of Home features pastas and salads of all kinds! This program is a great opportunity to prepare one dish but sample many. On the menu so far: Rhubread, Slow Cooker Chicken, and Egg Salad. Call the library so that staff can log your recipe selection. Then bring a dish and table service and plan to enjoy! Report: GORILLA IS LOOSE; STOPS FISHING IN INDIANA Just imagine: it is June 15, Newspapers across the country are running stories similar to this Chicago Tribune article warning residents a monster possibly a gorilla was lurking in the neighborhood. In this edition Thorntown resident Homer Birge is quoted as saying, We heard a crashing in the underbrush behind us. We turned around and there was this animal coming right toward us, walking upright on two legs. I have never seen a live gorilla but I ve seen pictures of them in newspapers. This animal looked just like one of those pictures Those arms were knocking branches off the trees. Now, over 50 years later, Homer Birge s nephew Dick Birge will reveal the secret sequel to Thorntown s most notorious visitor. Join us for a remarkable program including recordings of Asher Cones narrating their daring escapades. What would have happened if only someone had stopped instead of running the opposite direction? Or, did they? Then, as the plot thickens, our museum detectives will reveal exciting new facts about the case. Discover the REAL truth behind the legend! 2 PAGE 2 The Ultimate Family Treasure Hunt Have you ever considered searching for family treasures over the Internet? April s Genealogy Club meeting will discuss how to use two different Ancestry.com message boards to locate family heirlooms even heirlooms you never knew existed. First we will explore Lost and Found Family Items with 75 threads and 99 messages and then move on to Found Family Heirlooms with 4416 threads and 6458 messages. The first session will take place in the library computer lab on Monday, April 13 from a.m. and will be repeated on Tuesday, April 14 from 6-7 p.m. Space is limited so please call the library to reserve your seat today! Thorntown Writers Group April 16 The Thorntown Writers Group will continue to meet on the third Thursday of each month, 6-8 p.m., in the Young Adult reading room. Anyone interested in writing is invited to participate. Up to three single-spaced pages of an essay, short story, poem, etc., may be contributed and the author may request comment or critique but will not be required to do so. Likewise, writers may write on any subject; April s suggested topic is to elaborate on a milestone in your life. Cookies or other light dessert will be served at each meeting. Please join us! Gourds are GOURDgeous! Almost every Wednesday there is an opportunity to work with gourds at the Thorntown Public Library. Visitors are welcome. On April 1 and 15 at 6-8 p.m. the Sugar Creek Gourd Patch will be working on a variety of gourd projects, including wood burning, painting, and melted crayon art. On April 8 and 22 the Thorn Tree Gourd Patch will work on similar projects from 2-4 p.m. There is no charge for participation. At the April sessions participants will be working on completing gourds for the Indiana Gourd Society s 23rd annual state show. This event is open to the public at the Boone County Fairgrounds on May 2-3, with workshops offered for a fee on May 1. Plan now to enjoy the Gourdgeous Gourd. Questions may be directed to Karen Niemeyer at the library. Poetry in the Teen Room April is National Poetry Month and teens will enjoy creating poetry in a couple of ways. A fun way to create poems is called Magnetic Poetry. Magnetic words and phrases will be available to create poetry on the metal book shelf end caps in the Young Adult room. Another way to create poetry is called Blackout Poetry. Books will be offered to tear out pages (gasp!) to create Blackout poems. Check out the teen room for examples. Thorntown State Championship commemorative t-shirts are available for purchase. Shirts are royal blue with white print and basketball logo. 3 PAGE 3 Recycling Books, Magazines, and More The library often receives donations of books, magazines, and other materials. Thorntown offers multiple recycling sites all year, and Boone County will be providing its spring household hazardous waste collection and electronics recycling on Sat. April 25 (see page 1 for details). The library accepts donations of materials for its book sales, the proceeds from which help provide library programs and reading prizes. Clean items that might be useful to area residents may be dropped off during the library s open hours. It is wise to mark out ownership and addresses because you never know who will receive your donated items. A few years ago two local residents received a letter from a prison inmate who found a name and address in a book and wanted a pen pal. The library examines every donated item and masks/removes ownership, but a cautious plan is to remove that information before donating or discarding materials anywhere. Thorntown now offers sites for those materials that are not of desirable book sale quality, and you may be assured that your discards are not clogging a landfill site. Clean magazines and soft paper materials (including junk mail), as well as items that have been stored in barns and garages and have accumulated mouse droppings and dust should be placed in the green and yellow Abitibi recycling bins located throughout the community; the schools and Art Center receive a little funding from this recycling effort. Old textbooks, yellowed and soiled hardbound books should be taken to the county recycling drop spot at 500 South Front Street. This relatively new bin is emptied regularly and is an exciting addition to town cleanliness. It allows you to also discard, without separating, all colors of glass, hardbound books and phone books, clean steel cans, clean aluminum cans, foil, and food containers, cardboard (boxes should be broken down), cereal boxes, paperboard, and plastics #1-7. The latter includes plastic shopping bags, shrink and bubble wrap, banding, but NO STYROFOAM. A call to the Solid Waste Management District office reveals that there is no viable way yet to recycle Styrofoam. It is important to note that at the 500 South Front Street site all cans, bottles, and containers should be clean and dry. This bin is open 24/7 and is superbly convenient. The library appreciates donations and reviews all gifts of books, magazines, and audio/video materials. Some items are added to the library s collection and others are held for book sales. However, items that are soiled, contaminated, or falling apart should not be given to the library but recycled to other sites as described above. After the library s book sales end, left-over materials are picked up by AmVets or donated to other groups that might benefit. DATES TO REMEMBER: All the time County Recycling Drop Spot, 500 S. 7 PAGE 7 Busy month in the Youth Department April will be a busy month in the Youth Department! Storytimes meet each Tuesday, Snack & Yak each Wednesday, and Youth Cook, Kids Bingo, Crafternoon Jr., and LEGO Club on Thursdays. Whew! Check the library schedule of events for the dates and times of your favorite programs! Youth department staff are in the midst of planning for the 2015 summer reading program Every Hero Has a Story. Community heroes, animal heroes, and superheroes will all play a part in programming this summer. Summer reading programs begin Tuesday, June 9th with a visit from our local non-profit charity dedicated to connecting people to animals and nature ANIMALIA! They will be bringing some real live animal heroes. Mark your calendars! The Youth Department will take a break from programs in May to focus more heavily on planning and also to accommodate visits to and from school classrooms and daycare groups. Stop by to check out the newest books, magazines, and DVDs that youth department has to offer and don t forget to log your progress in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten or the Reach for the Stars reading challenges! Fiber Spinning with Benita Story will meet Thursday, April 2 from 6-8 p.m. Sessions are $20 per class; fiber is provided. Call the library to register! April Book Discussion Save the Date! The Papa John s Pizza Truck will be in the library parking lot serving up fresh, hot pizzas from 4-7 on Tuesday, May 5! A portion of each sale will benefit the Friends of the Thorntown Public Library. Florabama Ladies Auxiliary & Sewing Circle by Lois Battle has been chosen as April s book discussion title. When Cherished Lady Lingerie suddenly closes, Hilly Pruitt and other local women suddenly find themselves out of work and desperate for income. On the same day, recent divorcee Bonnie Duke Cullman begins her journey to Florabama to begin her new life. The ladies stories intertwine as they cope with their very different midlife crises, and they find common ground in the longings and dreams we all share for community, identity, security, and love. Discussion will take place in the young adult room on Monday, April 13 at 1:30 p.m. Discussions usually last about one hour and light refreshments will be provided. Those who have not finished the book are welcome to join the group. Copies of the book are still available at the circulation desk.
